- First Avenue opened in a former Greyhound Bus terminal in downtown Minneapolis on April 3, 1970. Originally called The Depot, the club brought in prominent national acts beginning with Joe Cocker on opening night.
After a stint as a disco club called Uncle Sam’s, and then Sam’s in the mid- to late-1970s, live music returned to center stage. Acts such as the Ramones, Pat Benatar, Bo Diddley, U2 and many others performed at the reborn rock venue.
Prince first played at Sam’s on March 9, 1981. Wearing a trenchcoat and shimmering bodysuit, he brought the crowd along for an energetic 95-minute set. On New Years Eve, Dec. 31, 1981, Sam’s was renamed First Avenue and a legend was born.

In 2004 for my 9th birthday my parents took me to see Prince live. While listening to these records I shed a tear because I wish I could see him now at 28 and always thought I’d have the chance before he retired. Really sucks when the people who mean so much to your childhood and sing the soundtrack to your life. My hero isn’t on this planet anymore.
Easily the most underrated Prince ballad. Complete classic.
Seriously though, I never thought one of my favorite songs couldn't get any better. Then Prince was like "What if it was a 6 minute long Funk Ballad?"
This dude was unreal. Just unbelievably great.
Oh My GOODNESS!!!!! I'm overwhelmed by the sheer amazing beautifulness of this song. How have I never heard this???? Wow!!!! Just Wow!!!! It's like at this moment, this song, reminded me who I really am. Whew! I miss him so! 🥰🙏🏽🔥🔥🔥
Dang, this is cold! I thought the original was badass! When you live to be the best live performer ever, you're born Prince!
Love this...shit is beautiful funk and this is why he stands alone there was nothing this black brother couldn't do...SUPER HERO
How is someone that good that soon that naturally...? This is straight fucking fire!
oh God- imagine this on the album!!! The original version was very sweet and heartfelt, but this version really makes you wanna dance in the kitchen with someone you love💃🏽
Seen Prince in 1981 @ The Saginaw Civic Center. Capacity was at least 10k. Actual attendance 500 or so. Greatest show I ever seen in my life. I felt like a thief. Miss my guy. 🙏🏼
Man - that was funky! I have a lot of Prince music - yet this, was fresh to my ears and I love it! He can arrange his songs (and others) so many different ways.
That’s awesome! Really different from the record. Kinda reggae. Flawless vocals, of course.
I am so digging this version. Just shows how bad ass he really was
This is really special. Thanks for sharing it.
I miss him...this is as beautiful as the original if not more. The guitar is amazing as only Prince can do!
What a SPECTACULAR JAM.....
Absolute rhythm guitar clinic. Just when you think it's over.... boooom
This heaven 🙏🏽💜🕊️
That Tele sounds extra crispy! 💜
Hell yeah, the Purple Prince!!
Damn he was so talented at such a young age! It's crazy to me!
Beautiful, soulful and Funky, coming from our Purple One 💜
I've been looking for this 4 a long time
Me to i saw him do it live attendance about 300 circa 1980.
GATDAMN. Wasn't ready for this. This is one of my faves, this version is everything.
Superb ! Thank You Men ! You marvelous!
Wow been looking for this live version for years THX !!
🟪 We celebrated my 18th birthday at “Uncle Sam’s” 💜☔️🕊
.. By October of ‘81, I was heading west ...
Amazing.
Great version and love the cover magazines, suits very well the music
I prefer this to the album version
said ever single person who has heard this version... killer rhythm guitar licks..
💜🐾
Wonderful
There use to be a rumor, that there was a second verse that got cut out of the original For You version.
I think you can hear it right before he says the first "I'm just crazy for you." It sounds like it starts with a (excuse my french) "f#%k."
According to The Current's article on May 15, 2016, that you linked, it said: "This week on The Local Show, we’ll be hearing the soundboard recordings of that First Avenue show, including a performance of “When You Were Mine.” Do you have any more of this show in soundboard quality? Maybe, from the broadcast of The Local Show?
I like the original with slow pace.
This is awesome, where did you find it?
A day after my 13th BD- 52 now. Where did the time go
This isn't the live recording at First Avenue from March of 1981. This is another rare live recording.
Why did Prince have to die so soon
😪😪😪
Ironically, we wouldn't be hearing most of this rare stuff Prince was still alive.
Have u got the full concert?? I have it in terrible quality. Is this sbd?? Where can I find it???
Quest love....
