  • ☆ after leaving my improvised mould and deckle untouched for almost three weeks, I finally got around to giving DIY handmade paper a go! I am so happy with how my sheets turned out, I rarely fall in love with the things I create. I'm happy to report this is one of those rare moments
    just to let you know, this tutorial is sort of like a vlog - this is my ever first time making handmade paper, so I've included the tiny hiccups along the process so you can learn from my mistakes too!
    hope you enjoy watching the tutorial!
    .
    TAG A FRIEND, who might want to make one of these too!
    .
    MADE one already? Tag me, so I can share it on my stories so others can see you work.

    Thanks for being here!

    You need to add sizing to home made paper or you’ll get A LOT of bleeding in your paper when using ink and such it’ll function more like a paper tissue than true stationary

      Thanks for this info. I haven't tried writing on, I used the papers more for swaps and papercrafts. I might try sizing next time. I'm pinning this comment for other people's reference.

      Read up on sizing:
      "If you are recycling paper that already had sizing in it - like printer paper, stationary, or any previously "printed on" paper, the ink shouldn't bleed. However, if you are using natural plant material for pulp, or a significant proportion of cotton linters, sizing is needed." www.woodendeckle.com/blog/sizing-handmade-paper

    If you want to use your handmade paper for writing letters or painting, it would be a good idea to apply sizing. Otherwise, the inks will have a strong tendency to bleed; you fine ink handwriting will look more like you've been writing with crayons. There are UA-cam vids showing various methods; I prefer wheat paste. It REALLY makes a big difference!

    • @nettii12
      @nettii12 3 роки тому +1

      May I ask what is sizing? Not done anything like this before just checking things out + English not my native language 😂

    • @alicelooney7752
      @alicelooney7752 3 роки тому +7

      @@nettii12 The materials used to make paper absorb water; good thing. However, once your paper is dry, it continues to want to absorb fluids; not so good. When you attempt to write on or paint on unsized paper, the ink/paint will be absorbed into the paper. Try writing on toilet paper; see what I mean? "Sizing" is the term used for the application of various chemicals which will "seal" your homemade paper so that it can be used for writing or painting. Most basic are wheat paste, gelatin, or white glue; highly diluted and sprayed or brushed on (external sizing). There are also specific chemicals that can be used; these are usually added to the paper pulp before you make your sheets (internal sizing).

      Oh wow I used wheatpaste in the past

    Would this work okay for written letters?
    I've been thinking about sending some letters and wanted to make some paper but I don't know how well it will fold or how it will take ink/paints/pens/pencils.
    I don't want to make paper and then have it crack or something. Please someone tell me if it works okay when you fold it or write in it, thanks.

    • @shacee
      @shacee  4 роки тому +47

      There are many factors that go into the process. Depends on how well ground your paper pulp is, on what additive filler (dried flowers/gold flakes) you choose to add, how thin or how thick you make the paper to be, and what paper you started out with. So to answer your question, i think this will be more of a trial and error experiment if you expect the paper to have a particular characteristic.
      Otherwise, for me, I just tried process of making the papers and quite enjoyed the output. I have tried writing on them and used them in other crafts the they held well for what I used them for.

Zoy brand is the best to that.and you can make press just using full treaded rod you can buy that in hardwares make with a wood.you can even make a papar cup with zoy powder.depends on your mixing.trust me.those are not hard and expensive to make.

    Beautiful paper. I got interrupted and didn’t get to watch the whole video. So a little tip: if you fold up a stack of newspapers that is smaller than your deckle, place them under your linen, then when you lay your frame on the stack, you should be able to roll your frame off and leave the sheet of paper behind.

    • @lolarodgers2961
      @lolarodgers2961 4 роки тому

      This is true. Professional paper makers use a rolling motion over a surface such as you described to easily Cooch their paper from the deckle. The mold and deckle I have detaches from the screen so I don’t do this but when I use my other molds, this makes the job so much easier and reduces paper fatality.

      Hiya! Pakistani here, I just watched the video and I’m confused as to what materials you don’t find available? I don’t see a problem finding any of these 😅 And you can make the frame yourself if needed!
