These old CB 750 Hondas are so well engineered and incredibly reliable. As I stated on a different video of yours I was a Honda mechanic back in the mid seventies and I built mine out of the crate during my lunch hour. Basically, the only reason why I bought it was my riding buddy’s all had new 750’s for long road trips and they didn’t want someone in the group breaking down ruining their trip… traded my 63 xlch chopper for a 850 Norton commando which was reliable enough to ride long distance in the pack, then moved up to a new 750 Honda. @@BrickHouseBuilds wow,.. Yeah there are always some surprises within older harnesses I guess,.. 🤣. did you sort it out for them, - hope you'll got it through..!
Cam chain tensioner is ALWAYS seized. Simplest check is while it's still mounted to back off the set bolt, and turn the engine BACKWARDS to put tension on the slack side. This forces the plunger out (you can monitor it with a small screwdriver sticking in the backside), and then you work it free and then turn forward to put all tension on the front side. Then you're set; you can tighten the bolt.
Great, you're working on this right now. I'm a big SOHC 750 engine lover. The thing I didn't like about it was the slap happy cam chain (if it's mainly that?) idle sound. I don't how to make it in letters... maybe kkkrrrawww kkkrrrawww kkkrrrawww kkkrrrawww . I wonder if anyone has done any work on quieting the cam chain, or that sound? It never caused any problems when I had my 750. Maybe I'm asking too much? To me it's not a 'good sound' like a Ducati dry clutch, but perhaps others feel differently?
it's most likely clutch basket making that noise believe it or not. 76 and i think 75 had different clutch setups than the earlier models. I have same noise on my 76 and thought that was cam chain or primary chain. But they both checked out good. Honda had a field fix, where you would swap clutch plate with a goldwing double plate. This helps a little but not completely gone. noise goes away at slightly higher idle - 1500 and by pressing the clutch.
77-78 CB750 "F" SOHC models had a shallower included valve angle which caused excessive wear in valve guides. Pistons are also different. '77 & '78 "A" & "K" models used the old style head. I'd restore that CB750A, those were cool bikes! At least you can pull the top end in the frame on the automatic, as engines were extremely heavy with those bikes. Cool video! Thanks man!
I've seen this before. Unfortunately there is enough explosive power in the compressed air to kill someone. Love the CB750. I'm curious to know however if the Japanese 2-Strokes ever existed in the US ? Here in the UK, back in the 1970s, the Kawasaki KH250, KH400 were pretty popular, then there was the Suzuki GT750 Water cooled (AKA kettle). Used to see them all over the place.
Good job on the gas tank. When you had the cam chain tensioner off did you notice a small (3mm) threaded hole in the back end of the cam chain tensioner? I recall finding one after I had removed the engine from the frame. I recall that I could screw in a small turn signal lens screw and it would act as an indicator to confirm the tensioner shaft moved. Saved me a lot of time later on!
I do not believe this had any threaded hole. I could have viewed from the back but I wanted to remove it anyway to get access to the oil pressure switch no it made for a nice demo

@@66tdarren I find classic bikes everyday on Facebook marketplace. They are everywhere actually. Just check local listings, ebay, Craigslist, bring a trailer, etc
The charging systems on the dohc bikes are picky. Do a very thorough diagnosis and don't take the owners word for what it needs. It may just need brushes, may need a rotor, may need a reg/rec, etc. Regardless, all components need to be in very good shape on those for the bikes to charge and last.

@@BrickHouseBuilds love the videos man, just bought a 75 cb550 so I’ve been delving into some how to videos on these bikes. They’re beautiful but carbs are a pain in the a$$.
Motors made in the 70's era used better materials and lasted decades, also the engineering of the past was more competent in making motorbike engines, once the starter started immediately, today's motorbikes are more prone to damage because there are lots of computer accessories, gyroscopes and others, which useless ,, that's my opinion .. I like your vlog about motorbike repair as well as a solution on how to do a good service even without complete tools
@@BrickHouseBuilds it's meant to put pressure on the chain but you have to take the slop out of it. It's not a automatic chain tensioner. You need to pull all the tension out of one side and keep the slop on the other and lock it in with your tensioner.

You are refreshingly through
Hi .a question for everybody . Is there a lockable oil tank cap for the 750/4
??????????
I am not sure but maybe someone will chime in. Also a good question for google and cb750 facebook pages.
My low point of the vid was when you said not a parts bike, as I was going to ask if I could get the Comstars for my 75 CB 750F build.😭😭
I never had comstars anyway. It had spokes
@@BrickHouseBuilds LOL no the ones on the A.
@@leebenson4874 Well it is a parts bike though. I had the whole thing for sale for weeks. Even shared it here
@@BrickHouseBuilds $ for the Comstars?
Its already gone. I have no comstars
Hadn't watched the cam adjuster cleaning yet when I made the comment. Music can be muted. UA-cam 'M' for mute.
Great work matey, i noticed some head fins brocken on the 750four, im pritty sure they can be welded and built up, i see Johnnysvintage motorcycles rebuilt broken fins on a Z900 Kawasaki, but i supose you would know they can be repaired. Great vlogs👍🏻
Thank you and yes some cracked fins but O don't want to weld them while still mounted to the jug. Check out my video on fin repair on my cbx restoration ua-cam.com/video/4k8RUivsel8/v-deo.html
Man that 78 is the same bike my dad had ! Where can I find one? You should get that one running.
I sold that 77A parts bike a while back actually.
@@BrickHouseBuilds I wonder if there's anymore around? Where or how do I search? If you don't mind sharing your secrets?
@@66tdarren I find classic bikes everyday on Facebook marketplace. They are everywhere actually. Just check local listings, ebay, Craigslist, bring a trailer, etc
@Brick House Builds thanks man. I'm digging your channel BTW.
@@BrickHouseBuilds I sure would like to find one and get it to you for a rebuild. You know your stuff. What part of the country are you located?
Have you fixed the cylinder 1 that use to smoked a lot?
There was no need. Check this video out that goes over engine health ua-cam.com/video/mbpp8l_QLDg/v-deo.html
I wouldn't call it riveting content, but there are times I'm welded to the screen!
I see what you did there 😉
Where did you buy the carb rebuilt kit for a 75 CB750? (If you did) I’ve bought 3 off eBay but none of them fit.
Check out the earlier videos of getting the bike running. I discuss that and link where I got them. I don't use full kits but do replace seals/gaskets
The oil sensor fix is why "mechanics hate engineers"
🤣🤣🤣 just impossible to access in a clean way
I'm about to buy an 81 cb 750. It needs a stator. Any suggestions?
The charging systems on the dohc bikes are picky. Do a very thorough diagnosis and don't take the owners word for what it needs. It may just need brushes, may need a rotor, may need a reg/rec, etc. Regardless, all components need to be in very good shape on those for the bikes to charge and last.
When are you starting on the Honda CBX?
Not sure. Priority wise its all been customer bikes to meet deadlines and this bike so I can ride something. I go over this in my moving the needle video the past week
Wow!
Thank you
I thought it would look just as good if you put a leather patch on the tear on the seat.
The existing material is almost hard and brittle so it wouldn't hold anything
Is that an Ed Kemper Timesuck shirt at the beginning?
Keen eye!!!
@@BrickHouseBuilds love the videos man, just bought a 75 cb550 so I’ve been delving into some how to videos on these bikes. They’re beautiful but carbs are a pain in the a$$.
Just don't overthink the carbs and make them a bigger problem than they really are. People do that with wiring
6:40.....its 🎩 magic
Magic I wish I had recorded 😪
Just posting a comment for the algorithm...
Thank ya!
@ 28:14 I am here for the content, not the music. The music is not terrible.
Music is part of the content. It will always be a part of my channel. Creativity and functionally it serves a purpose
@@BrickHouseBuilds I wasn't criticizing the music. I meant that I am more in tune to what you are doing and what I am learning.
A kithen sink plunger works 90%of the time
Id feel like Id put a larger dent in the tank by pushing the plunger into it to make a seal but I'm glad it works for you
GOOD LOOKING BIKE,. I HAVE TO GET MY BUTT MOVING ON MY 350 BUILD!
Get on it! Also, thank you!
Don't you supposed to rotate the motor after you release the tensioner?
No. You set the engine in a specific position then perform this procedure.
@@BrickHouseBuilds I thought you were supposed to roll the engine over one revolution to take out all slop out of the chain.
@@frankc1430 The tensioners job is to remove the slop
@@BrickHouseBuilds it's meant to put pressure on the chain but you have to take the slop out of it. It's not a automatic chain tensioner. You need to pull all the tension out of one side and keep the slop on the other and lock it in with your tensioner.
If thats the case all the Honda service manuals are wrong then per your information.
Riveting content? I was going to say it was ratcheting content!
You're a punny guy!
250 foot lbs !?
You know that was sarcasm right?
Fix the seat!
Can't tell if thats a joke or not
Complained about the seat? These complainers need to get their hands dirty.
Hundreds of comments from day one just pointing out the seat
@@BrickHouseBuilds Amazing. I like the torn seat! Battle scars.
OK, then, I'm not going to comment on that small scratch on the valve adjuster lid...
Please don't destroy my faith in younger generations by doing anything too wacky with the seat! 😬
Seeing how I've been doing the rest of the bike how wacky are you expecting me to get?
@@BrickHouseBuilds I dunno, but you have a great looking seat, but it wasn't fitted, and a whole seat video coming up? At the same time, you said you want to have a chat with us, and we're thinking wrong! Hopefully I'm thinking right......bike looks great, very tastefully done. 😊👍
Reminds me of how I did bikes when I was young, driven then by lack of funds!
Its on the topic of perception and flawed logic on whats important
when you said "crank this to 250 ft lb" I literally choked on my own spit.
🤣🤣🤣
