    I understand the unending love Pokémon gets, but after seeing how Xenoblade and BOTW run on switch this situation is unfortunate. All of you that are very deeply rooted fans, its not asking a lot that they make a true RPG out of this IP. Being a master trainer rocks. But don't you want to try another run as a coordinator? Breeder? Pokémon Doctor? etc. Really wrap your head around the missed opportunities here. You deserve that game. I'm sure one day it will happen. But we need change. I hope people show Nintendo and Gamefreak that.

      The Switch is dog 💩. The game is fun and I’m actually finding it more fun than Ragnorak for the PS5. Ya acting like this game would still have the same issues if it was on a better console. BOTW is trash as well. As long as Nintendo stick with inferior consoles ya just going to keep getting wacky games that the switch can’t handle

      @@deeep_blue This. Camera clipping, rendering issues and character bugging can't even be attributed to the console at all since they don't happen at all in a ton of other games. All a more powerful console could do for this imo is make the framerate less intolerable and allow for higher res textures, both of which are problems, but not the biggest issues of this game.

    The biggest tragedy of this game is that you can tell it wasn't play tested. Most gamefreak games can get a pass because of its linear nature but when it comes to open world games you need months if not years of testing to ensure stuff like level geometry, character hitboxes and general jank gets ironed out.

    I see a dominating narrative that the only issue is technical problems but no. You can no longer enter buildings in this instalment. So not only have they STILL not coughed up for some voice actors, STILL not added sidequests, STILL not integrated Pokémon into environmental puzzles and obstacles (which did used to be in early Pokémon games - Snorlax, Sudowoodo - and should have been increased, yet has been dropped entirely) but now they’ve removed the ability for the player to ENTER BUILDINGS. When you go into a shop, an interface pops up instead of a building interior. Any houses you try to enter in a town you can no longer enter. Pokémon centres are like outside petrol stations. All of these things combine to make one big, empty, dead world. The texture pop and low res are the least of the issues.

    • @kaeroseon
      @kaeroseon Рік тому +165

      Really caught me off guard with the buildings. Especially when after experiencing this vast world, excited to see what the cities are gonna be like, the themes, the people and then… the buildings can’t be entered. The shops are merely gui that can be replaced by an npc and a sign. Lack of level scaling makes certain routes death traps and terastalizing feels like a lazy excuse for a way to have pokemon change types with no new Pokémon designs. Feels like an alpha test or concept build rather than a game.

    • @NA-nz9lv
      @NA-nz9lv Рік тому +54

      sidequests would add so much world-building and would fill the void that is left by the mostly empty open-world, it would also add some game-time since the game is really short-lived after you're done with the main quest.

I was so annoyed in previous games having to go into every house because one may have an important item I may otherwise miss and then go without for the entire game. Most of the houses just had NPCs with some cute dialogue but nothing useful, I don't really miss them.
      That said, I do wish they compensated by making more NPCs outside with things like trade requests or side quests. Arceus had side quests...why did they leave them out this time?

    Another big problem that's been spoken of by ex-employees is that there's a lot of old guard at the company, that don't want to change, or don't see the need to change and learn new things. So there's a churn of contract hires that are only around for a set time for specific parts of the project - and then not re-hired for the next game, leaving an ever expanding patchwork code base. This leads to new contract workers having to learn what was done by the ones before them before they can make any progress, and the people that are permanent hires constantly fighting to stay atop all this without having anyone who worked on it on hand when something inevitably goes wrong. They're working themselves into a corner.

      This just exacerbates the problematic development cycle, 3 years of which after the game is released you now have to find new workers, who pretty much have to internship their actual jobs to get to the start. However time is already gone, along with the design choices that first happen, you are already many months or a year into the hole, 2 years to code a fully open 3D game sounds absolutely bonkers and scarlet/violet shows.
      These games show that they focused more on creating than optimising and that shows so much through the bugs, glitches, stuttering, memory leaks, emptiness, copy and paste stores.

They're shooting themselves in the foot and as a 3D artist myself, it's frustrating seeing them squander so much potential in the game due to rushing and not having the proper time to polish art assets and fully optimize the games. I've played over 40 hrs at this point and I love it, but damn do I wish the visual experience lived up to what it should be.

      I disagree that the two games cause any real issue at all. The issues are on a technical level, any team for Scarlet and Violet specifically would not exist at the level of differences between versions. Developmentally speaking, there are no real differences between the versions. Different or altered lines of dialogue, different sets of pokemon spawning, different character models and textures are not that big of a deal there. Even with the differences mentioned, the vast majority of the time they are the same.

    • @becausesakamoto5938

      @@prosecutorwalton they're talking about the team splitting up working on two separate projects, such as one working on PLA and one working on S/V. There are actually now 4 teams at Game Freak spreading the manpower even thinner- so for example there was one team working on SwSh updates and support, one working on SwSh DLC, one working on PLA, and one working on S/V. Obviously since the first 3 aren't in development anymore and S/V are released, I'd wager that there are 3 teams working on S/V, including updates, DLC, and people working in the background as support, with the last team working on a release for either late 2023 or early 2024 that will be announced next year, and once early support for S/V decreases one of those teams will be moved over to the next release. Since it seems like DLC and real-time updates will be eliminating their history of "enhanced" versions like with USUM, I wouldn't be surprised if the next big release that's announced is either another Legends game or a new large spin-off and they're keeping gen 5 remakes in their back pocket. In an ideal world, they'd take a longer release hiatus after S/V DLC in 2024, maybe at most doing a remaster of an old game like Mystery Dungeon DX, and then do Black and White remakes or a Legends game for their 15th anniversary.

    • @Brimikyu
      @Brimikyu Рік тому +7

      @@prosecutorwalton I wasn't talking about version exclusive games, GF is known to split their studio into 2 teams to work on separate game all together. For example,the main team worked on SV while a secondary team worked on PLA, and the same thing happened with one team working on SWSH while the second worked on Little Town Hero. SWSH suffered from the lack of team members, SV and PLA clearly needed for time to polish graphical fidelity and they both suffered from that. Also remember, PLA and SV started development at the same time right after SWSH came out. This made two small teams rush to pump out two relatively large games in only 2-3 years. GF itself is already small with only around 170ish employees, so splitting in two doesn't help. Compare it to say Santa Monica Studio that has 400 employees and took 5 years to develop God of War 2018. I only used this reference to compare team size/ time and what was achieved with that much as the development for GoW was well documented, not comparing both games graphical style or anything, just the polish side of things. Team size and time can really make the difference between the level of polish and optimization capeable in games. GF really needs to increase their team size if they want to keep popping out games at the rate they do and if not they need at LEAST 1-2 more years of development time as 3 is clearly not enough.

    The thing is, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl came out on the 19th of November last year, Legends Arceus came out in January this year, and Scarlet and Violet came out on the 18th of November this year.
    In the span of a single year, Pokemon have released 3 mainline games, two of which were developed by GameFreak those being Arceus and Scarlet/Violet. GameFreak is not a large studio meaning they either (A. Rushed the development of Scarlet/Violet in 10 months. or (B. Developed 2 large open world games simultaneously despite not having enough staff members to do 2 large open world games simultaneously.
    Either way just bad management, they didn't need to release a game for the holidays given they had already released Arceus less than a year prior. Why they didn't do the thing they did with Sword and Shield and realise DLC expansions for Arceus rather than try and develop an entirely new game is beyond me in a small timespan is beyond me.
    On the plus side, we now have ILCA as a second developer for Pokemon games (they did BDSP), and while BDSP had problems as a first game by a new developer to the franchise, it's fine and I look forward to seeing how ILCA expand on they're foundation. The biggest issue I have with the new releases is the fact that the sacrifice in visual fidelity doesn’t amount to anything. Typically when a developer cuts down on graphics, it’s for the sake of performance and vice versa. I’m guessing there were probably internal builds that had better textures and resolutions but ran so bad that it wasn’t even remotely possible to release it. I know optimization isn’t easy but it’s something that can be assigned to one dedicated team, it doesn’t have to change the entire structure of Game Freak. I am a very casual player, and throughout 9 years of playing Pokémon games, I can’t recall any instances where there have been major glitches or graphical errors i’ve encountered, not even in Sword and Shield. (I didn’t play BDSP) However, just through playing Scarlet, I encountered glitches CONSTANTLY, even while doing the most mundane tasks. The game also crashes or freezes a whole ton, so it’s quite easy to lose lots of progress if you turn off autosave or don’t save frequently. Some glitches are fun like the backwards jumping glitch, and although I enjoy playing the games, the laggy pixely animations (for example the first classroom scene) are unbelievably bad, and I wish they spent more time on mechanics than trying to make it look good, which they didn’t really even do.
    edit: there's a war in the replies so I wanted to say I actually really enjoyed the game. I loved the open world mechanics, and the story, especially Arven's story, and overall just roaming around with my pokemon. My experience does not dictate anyone else's obviously, but just because I have some issues does not mean I am needlessly hating on it, and some issues may have been things only I encountered. Everyone has their own opinions, and that's completely fine :) Personally I was annoyed because PLA and SWSH never had these issues, but again, it's my personal experience.

Then the games are followed by the trading cards, a new anime series, merchandising, collaborations with other companies, etc.
      Because of this framework, delaying the games will delay EVERYTHING ELSE that follows after. If GameFreak had more time and more people to work on these games, then they wouldn't be as buggy. It breaks my heart that the game is so technically unfinished. Underneath the bugs lies what I would call one of the most fun Pokemon games in years. There are things to be improved, sure (remove obedience level cap, make NPC level scale), but the enviroments are vast and fun to explore, story paths are wholesome, characters memorable (for a Pokemon game at least, I strongly recommend taking classes at the school, because the teachers are quite the characters) so many quality of life improvements have been made. I have Switch Lite, so the visual glitches aren't that bad, since the game runs better in handheld mode and I had a lot of fun with the game over all. If the game had some more time in the oven I think it would be one of the most beloved entries in the franchise. As it is now it's getting slammed in the reviews, even though this is definitely several steps in the right direction comparing to at least past three generations. It's especially surprising that, while much simpler, Legends Arceus avoided much of the glitches present in SV.

In some of the older, but more recent games, if you put a pokemon to sleep, their eyes would close, if you got a shiny to spawn, you'd usually hear it before you seen it... and what happened to being able to just sneak up on a pokemon and chuck a ball at them to catch them without battling like you could in Legends? Like I understand that feature in particular was more attributed to Legends because it was an older era, people were still afraid of pokemon and didn't necessarily want to just rush out at them and catch them like we do in modern day games, but that was *fun*, I'd have loved the option to keep doing it like that.
      The best feature they put into this game was the ability to let your pokemon walk with you again, but, that's reaaally finicky... it's so easy for yhe game to glitch and return your pokemon to you, and half the time your pre evolutions can't even keep up with you unless you're walking at a snails pace... the game really could have used more quality of life features, and it could have done with a lot more polishing, imo at least.

    Besides the tech issues, the open world format this time around has a myriad of other issues. While I enjoy this ALOT more than sword and shield, as an rpg in general it BARELY passes the mark of what's acceptable. They need more development time or a bigger team, but if their track record is any indication they won't change much of anything. I didn't realize this until I talked to other players, but the sense of progression is a mess this time around. Sure you have the freedom to choose where you go, however unless you're like me and train to the point where nobody is a challenge anymore from the beginning, you are liable to run into several challenges you aren't prepared for. Another nitpick I have is how lazy some of the animations are. I think we are technically advanced enough to actually show a pokemon is tired/injured other than just the status symbol. I was hoping pokemon eventually would also do combat similar to Monster Hunter Stories 2, but everyone seems to be developing and evolving the turn based monster battle format EXCEPT the people that created it which is a shame. Arceus (even though it felt like a prototype) was probably the best pokemon felt in years. The limited uniform thing was also bothersome as well. It really feels like they didn't have enough time to finish scarlet and violet so they just settled with the bare minimum. Its ok to like and have fun with this game, but I think even if you like the game you should let the problems of it be known so the higher ups know that we want a QUALITY pokemon game.

      I've been saying to a couple of my friends that the technical issues are one thing, but the biggest problem I have been having is that the games literally are not feature complete. Having an open world with 3 different story lines which you can do in any order is actually a negative in my opinion when the battles in the stories don't scale to your level. They would have been better off enforcing an order to complete the stories in but maintaining the open world. Another thing is like you mention, the character customization. There is so much detail included into how you can customize your character's face (many of which you literally cannot tell the difference between), and so many accessories, but you can only pick between 1 of 4 uniforms? It just doesn't make sense to anyone who has ever played any rpg game before, which presumably many of the people at game freak have. Also I feel like the world is empty and has no real character. For an open world game, you really need to have the open world be interesting, with different little secrets here and there that incentivize the player to explore for exploration's sake. Maybe I haven't encountered anything like this yet, but the world has the same feeling as BOTW, which is not a good thing considering BOTW takes place after a massive disaster and Hyrule is mostly a wasteland. Even the main city feels empty and boring, since despite its size, you literally can't go into any of the shops other than the salon?
      I haven't gotten too too far into the game as I mentioned, so maybe I'll change my mind by the end, but the technical issues, as bad as they are, don't take away my enjoyment of the game that much. I used to play PC games on a shitty old laptop, so i can deal with lag and bad resolution if I have to. The biggest and most concerning issue to me is that either game freak or creatures or whoever it is that ultimately makes the decisions on what each pokemon game becomes don't seem to actually understand how to make a good game at all if there is any deviation to the standard pokemon formula. They hear that fans want an open world, and so they make the world open, but make almost no other changes which are necessary to actually support the open world. Anyone at game freak who played any xenoblade game, or BOTW or ANY OTHER DECENT OPEN WORLD RPG must have known this, and yet they made the game in this way.
      Scarlet and Violet could have been the start of a renaissance for the pokemon franchise, they were clearly on the right path, but instead they were released as unfinished games, which might have some patches to fix bugs, but probably won't actually ever be truly finished. I have never been the guy to get into a big fuss when pokemon games are released and there are a bunch of issues, and to be fair I'm really not angry, the games are still fun. I'm mostly just confused as to how this could even have been approved as good enough and dissapointed that pokemon probably won't ever get the treatment it deserves unless nintendo steps in and does something about it (they have their own issues, but you can't say they won't make sure games are actually done before they release them, as they have shown with delaying release dates in the last few years)..

    The switch's power is completely irrelevant and I'm so tired of hearing people bring it up. Setting aside the fact that launch era games like BotW and Xenoblade 2 blow this out of the water on the same hardware, it's an irrelevant point because a developer's entire job is working within the confines of the hardware their software is running on. It's not like this was a PC game being ported over or something. It's designed from the ground up for the Switch.
    The non-developer public talking about this game seem to believe that a lot of the issues would be resolved in a hypothetical world where you could just upgrade the specs of the Switch when that's really not how any of this works at all. Computers only do what we tell them to, and it's your job as a developer to make the best use of every cpu/gpu cycle available to you. *Especially* in video game development.
    There is exactly one reason Scarlet/Violet run the way they do, and it's that TPC/Game Freak are not willing to spend the money that manpower and expertise require (or let loose on their 2-year release cycle to better utilize what manpower and expertise they already have). Purely a matter of greed, nothing else to it. The switch's hardware is old as hell and I'd love a refresh but this game is nowhere near its limits.

So, it's ultimately useless to blame people for participating in that system that has only ever given them the expectation that they ought to have this, or that.

    I wonder how long until Nintendo directly intervenes considering they own a third of pokemon. These graphical and technical issues are just inexcusable with the current market. Throwing away the route system of which they have mastered for a format that they have no clue on was an incredibly poor move. Colosseum and XD also show that console pokemon games never needed an open world to be well beloved and praised through the years. All they need is to be competently made and with a clear vision of that world. Worst of all Gamefreak seem to have lost their vision for the world of pokemon and are now lost in the dark chasing after gimmicks. How long is this going to continue until something changes?

    • @Repaduski
      @Repaduski  Рік тому

      I don’t mind them ditching the route system I think it makes sense. But they need to offer more in their world then the same. All they did was expand the map so you can do the same thing in a larger space ya know?

    • @andresmarrero8666
      @andresmarrero8666 Рік тому

      @@Repaduski frankly all they needed to do was expand the route system to 3D. Dispite all the side paths and ways of transversal, as seen in the gen 5 games, the route system is still a single path on a two dimensional plane. The simple solution to evolving this system is just to make it three dimensional with a three by three grid, three vertical paths and three horizontal paths making a total of nine paths for the route that you could freely switch between with proper transversal. We say the beginnings of this in the incomplete X and Y games particularly in that mountainside coastal route that you can see the lower half from the upper half. This kind of evolved route system also lends itself to the puzzle box mentality that both Breath of the Wild in their divine beasts and Dark Souls in their level design are so fond of on top of being in a manageable space and with a system that they developed and mastered. In latter stages of this evolved route system you could even expand the scope of the puzzle box mentality to the routes throughout the region themselves, each affected others in various ways which not only makes the whole system feel more alive and natural but it also allows previous wasted mechanics such as seasons to make a return and be expanded upon. One of their biggest mistakes was throwing away what they had mastered in favor of something they knew nothing about instead of evolving what they knew to the next stage. That was simply a foolish decision. I would rather take refinement and natural evolution over an open space and tons of objectives if Scarlett and Violet, Sword and Shield, and Legends Arceus are the result.
      Granted I never liked the concept of an open world for pokemon to begin with and Gamefreak's results have not been changing my mind. Games like New Pokemon Snap, Colosseum, and Gale of Darkness also proves that the franchise never needed this concept and that the more linear pathways can be better for the game as a whole. Gamefreak left their exquisitely crafted sandcastles and landscapes to go chasing flying eggs without a way to catch them which has resulted in mediocrity. To me that is an incredibly foolish decision among a few others.

Their first games as a studio were Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness. Followed by Pokemon Trozei! and Pokemon Battle Revolution. Ever since then, they've been relegated to to the simplest of spin offs, if even allowed to touch the Pokemon franchise at all, supposedly by GameFreak's decision. Having to work on unrelated low budget titles, or make their own series just to stay in business, despite seeming to actively want to work with Pokemon.
    They have ready access to a development studio that was specifically made to produce Pokemon games, and yet despite the growing scope and crunch time of the mainline games, Genius Sonority just isn't being made use of. Compared to SWSH, SV is much better in almost every department. However there are still a lot to work on be it graphically or story wise. The 3 stories were honestly super great, except the victory road one. The victory road story was so anti climactic, outside of Cayenn or Cyan or whatever, all the others were sooooo underwhelming, the amateurish league where they call each other to come forward in a room that is so f’ing bland, it makes you wanna throw up. It was decent pokemon roster wise but the league master despite looking super badass had the most boring pokemon roster and it was on the roof of the other bland room and NO PANTHEON PHOTOSHOOT???? Even Alola who had you as its first pokemon master and was a brand new league looked so much better and polished compared to the mess that the Paldean league was. The game had other problems but the league one, I just can’t get it out of my head.

    this was a nice video, personally I don't think the graphics look bad but I think with all the technical issues with the framerate, pop-in of textures and NPCs, and how foliage will only really render so far out until it isn't noticeable is why the game looks so bad. The game itself to me so far looks really good but it's easy to get distracted by all these issues which I'm surprised that they even exist. The real issue I see is that the company themselves really don't put any money into the games compared to most of the other branches of the company that makes them money, they are far more than able to hire more hands to make the new games better, also I think that with how Pokemon is right now if they hired another company to make the games in the same timespan they might do better but we have to account for BDSP and how that was made by ILCA and they had a lot of ambition for what the game could've been but were stopped by the Director of the game and The Pokemona Company themselves and were told to make them a certain way. All in all, I think the series is heading in the right direction but if they can't hire more hands and/or give the games the time they need to be finished it'll just continue to be this endless cycle of getting new games were hyped about and then getting disappointed because there are noticeable issues with them.

      Frame rate and pop in are the biggest issues and why this should not have been let out the door yet. It’s realllly unfortunate how often the frame rate is in the low 20s . It’s as often as it’s 30. The pop in would be less of an issue if it wasn’t happening right next to you versus far away loads. And overall the texture quality outside is rough. I just think this teams has a ways to go to be pulling off visual and performance such as a Xenoblade of botw game. It’s just unfortunate and all of you hardcore fans deserve a bigger and better game.

      @@Repaduski I mean, I don't think the Pokemon games should look like the Xenoblade games if that is what your saying, but I agree that they should be able to get a handle of their games performance and visuals. I remember seeing some videos only for SWSH about the graphics of the games where someone modded their game with better graphics but compressed to the same file size is the official graphics, so if someone that does this as a hobby can do it then surely a multi-billion dollar corporation can do it.

    Fantastic video. Now that you mention it, a collaboration between Game Freak and Monolith Soft sounds like it could be a recipe for one of the greatest games ever.
