Better yet, write down your recipe so that it’s consistent every time. No need to check for flavor each time. Also, it allows future generations to enjoy without the guesswork.
Can you get mama on here to feature some of her traditional dishes or even papa with his eggplant omlettes. That would be a cool segment on the show to feature different traditional meals with your diverse family members. Love it.
Frankly, it should have been Mama in the demo instead of Benji. Benji sounded as if he has a mouth ulcer!! Mama's lumpias are not so skinny. I still remember Mama's video demo years ago, which is my go to recipe for lumpias.
I would love that. Thank you, guys, for sharing this recipe I'm going to attempt to make this myself, just went to the store and got the ingredients, very excited!!! I saw the frozen prepared lumpia at the store and was tempted to purchase, but it was so expensive 😫. Plus homemade is always better in my opinion. 😊
A tip especially for beginners: place a wet paper towel over the stack of wrappers that are placed aside. You don’t want them to dry up. Judy and Benji are lumpia wrapping pros so it wasn’t necessary for them.
Making this tonight for my daughters birthday, I have done it in the past and love it. I’m a quarter Filipino and we (my family) usually make with pork, carrots, green beans, bean sprouts, garlic, soy sauce and chicken boullion.
I love how you guys even included the skininess of your lumpia, temp of the oil and for how long you fried them for. I know you absolutely don't need to be as meticulous to cook filipino food. My mother and grandmother certainly NEVER DID. But allowing yourself to pay attention to certain details makes the most consistent recipes that never fail!
Hey Benji, It's taken me a while to drop a comment but I really appreciate your channel and family. My wife introduced me to you and your family years ago (I think y'all were in an apartment lol). Keep being a great example of being a husband, father, and good person. It's really cool to see this and I just wanted to thank you for being you. Back to the recipe! 😎
I’m a Malaysian, me and my mom always make this finger food when we do family gatherings. We call it Popia here in Malaysia and we use beef instead since we’re muslims ☺️ btw I’m a big fan here, always love your cooking videos, keep ‘em cominggg 😁😁
We've been wanting to make lumpia for awhile, but haven't had the courage. We finally decided to try it using your recipe and it was so delicious. You made it so easy and fun to follow along. We even enlisted the help of our 11-year-old with the filling part, and she loved it! She never has interest in helping cook, and she said she can't wait until we make it again. Thank you!
Tried this recipe & the one by Judy's Mom for my Ladies Club yesterday. I'll be very frank, the lumpias made using Judy's Mom's recipe won hands down. With the benefit of hindsight, maybe Judy's Mom should have used her tried & tested recipe. Something to consider in case you plan to feature Filipino dishes on this channel in future.
I was married to a Filipino, I got addicted to Lumpia!!! Thank you for this recipe so I can make tons of Lumpia now. And I love this recipe. Especially the frugal part. Feels more authentic this way.
Your cooking videos are just the best. They're simple and there's no complicated or super artsy shots, just real simple cooking done with passion. Your wife and kids are lucky to have such a great cook for a husband/ dad.
I remember in judy’s old vlog she cooked lumpia with water chesnut . I’ve tried that before and it was so good. Will definitely try this new recipe cause everything this couple do, I follow.💞
This took me back over 50 years when I was in USAF and got to go to the PI numerous times. Such delightful people and what wonderful food! We yyoung GIs would compete to see who could eat the most 'lumpia.' Thank you for the memories! [BTW, a super Filipino family has just bouht, and are developing the acreage South of me. They will make fantastic neighbors (Both are nurses and they have 4 children - lovely folks)]
Love this I’m Mexican an I love to eat lumpia’s ❤ thank you for sharing the steps because I want to master something I enjoy eating so helpful 🤗 God bless you both
Been craving this for years, waited for you to post this video once you said you would and finally years later I went to the phillipino store to grab lumpia wraps and got the other ingredients and now I’m making these tonight 🤤
I made these for Xmas eve family get together, I used the entire recipe and not only did I NOT have any left over everybody kept asking for more and who made them. I was told they were not only better than Mom's (already top marks) but also better than the restaurants. I believe the ingredient that puts this particular recipe over the top has got to be the carrot. Carrots actually contain quite a bit of natural sugars that work extremely well with the sausage and a pepper. Most important also for me was setting your mix aside. Give your mixture plenty of time get to know each other, as much time as you can makes it better. Do not use mixing machines, get those clean hands in there. Hands are what we use to touch, touch the hearts of others through your food. Clean hand mixing, there's no substitute.
I went to two Asian markets they said they never heard of Roasted Garlic only heard of chicken or beef Bouillon.. What is the proper name of the Roasted Garlic I even showed them your video.. My Lumpia turned out very good without the Roasted Garlic.. Thanks you for sharing..
Growing up my task was always separating the lumpia wrappers. I learned to put the meat in the ziplock bags and cutting the wrappers in half from your vlogs. Love that hack!
I love my mother in law egg roll recipe. Which won my college food competition. -ground pork/shrimp, salt/pepper, thinly sliced jicama/taro/carrot, wood ear mushrooms, glass noodles, sugar, chicken bouillon, fish sauce
I just made the lumpia! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe and giving me the inspiration to make it ,they were delicious all my family enjoyed them!
Yesssss I will definitely be trying this my son has been waiting for this recipe lol he watches your vlogs with me and is always saying that looks sooooo good lol
Did this vlog disappear overnight?? I was looking for it as I bought the ingredients already. Is there any change in the ingredients and method in the latest recipe?
Finding the wraps is what’s hard, but I’ve been telling my hubby I wanna make this. Finally! Lol you guys make it sound so good and i love trying new foods! On the list!
Any good Filipino/asian market will have. I finally got by the one near the Dr I am seeing and.picked up a package of them along with silver swan soy sauce.
I keep looking back at this video haha, I’m prepping the pork today to make for Christmas Eve with my family! I know it’ll be so good. Thanks again guys :)
So, I went ahead and prepared this one along with the lumpia recipe from 'tasty' channel that Mel made on there. cooked both and served them to my filipino fiancé. This is the recipe that he said this is what real lumpia taste like. Both recipes are so good but this specific recipe is definitely the one you want to make and serve to your family. So choose this recipe if your looking to cook up a batch of some authentic homemade lumpia. Thanks so much for this recipe. Ill definitely be putting this in my home cookbook.
Never knew what this was called but my brothers girlfriend taught me how to make it so long ago. I started making myself and would add carrots, onions, a little garlic, green onion, snap peas, sesame oil and one egg. I could only find spring roll wrappers so would use them and once rolled I would cut them in half and fry until golden. Then serve with sweet chili sauce.
We love crunchy lumpia too, except we have found that using hikama is another great way to get a nice fresh crunch no matter what you put in the lumpia filling! Sarap!
I just made the mixture for this tonight for the superbowl tomorrow! I have dutch oven, and food processor so im basically able to prepare it the same way! Will wrap and deep-fry tomorrow!!
If you have a kitchenaid mixer, it totally works to use the paddle attachment to mix the meat and veggies. So you technically can automate the whole thing if you have a food processor too! No way around the rolling part though, but to me that's the most fun part cause the whole family gets involved!
Lumpia is a perfect recipe for birthday celebrations here in the Philippines. It's a food that should not be missing in celebrations. It really taste good. Thanks for this cooking video
so I had to look you up to find the "original" way you cooked these with your Mom, Judy. I'm happy that I accidentally found this version of your lumpia. My nieces have a running joke, that we're not allowed to come over unless we are going to make lumpia. Today is game night with the fam...and guess what, got talked into making lumpia again. I stumbled upon this version and I think I want to try this for tonight~! I trust that this will be a big hit! Thank you in advance.
Thanks for sharing both of you on how you do your Lumpia-Filipino Shanghai recipe! It sure does look so easy to make and fry and YUP DEF. LOOKS VERY YUMMY! Char from SC :)
Benji is so detail about his way of doing his lumpia while Judy eyeballs her way of making lumpia, typical Mama. Both are good just different in their ways of doing lumpia, cute !
my exes mom used to make these the exact same way except she would use white onion and fresh garlic and she would use the whole Lumpia. Yours look so delicious too!! Iv'e been wanting to make these for a long time but i haven't yet.
Benji, wow what a great recipe for perfect Lumpia -Filipino Shanghai Recipe! I am a new guy to your channel. I remember when I was in the Philippines back in the 70s. This was the go to street food! Nice job . Stay connected!
Yum ill have to try it this way next time. Judy, i used your mom's lumpia recipe and everyone that ive made it for loved it. Its so addicted and so yummy
I now use the ziploc bag trick since i saw Judy doing it once. Life hack 101 for lumpia making.....made it easier to make it on a regular basis. Looks Good! Thanks for sharing.
I definitely saw the banner "Sponsored by the National Pork Board" for this vlog. May I enquire if this is the reason the vlog was removed for a couple of days or is there some other reason?
Lumpia always looks sooo amazing whenever you guys (or Mama) makes it. Benji, would love to know if you or Judy can suggest a vegetarian alternative to the filling?
for a vegetarian filling, i like potato, carrot, garlic, ginger, yellow onion, green onion, cabbage and corn :) i slice everything thinly (except the corn lol) and pre-cook the ingredients altogether in a frying pan. for seasonings, you can add your favourite ones to taste - i won't recommend mine since i use chicken bouillon as one of them lol
Lumpiang Togue. The mix is mung bean sprouts, Carrots, green beans, jicama, onion, garlic, cabbage anf pre fried tofu as substitute for the pork and shrimp.
Dang it, I did a search and it showed there are only like a dozen restaurants in the US that sell Lumpia! Man, it has been so long since I had some! I last had it in the Philippines when I was in the Navy in the early 90s. So yummy!
Omg, so excited! I've been waiting for a new video to this recipe. Love the one with mama also. One question what can I use if I can't find the "lumpia" wrapper.
I was wondering this too and googled it. It looks like spring roll wrappers is the closest, and then egg roll wrappers and wonton wrappers which are thicker (&the wonton ones considerably smaller as well). The lumpia wrappers were also listed as being kept in the freezer section (just in case that helps if searching in a store) I would have assumed they'd be with the other wonton/eggroll wraps but according to what I was reading they are frozen. :)
@@AnnieThyme I think Judy tried that Ms. Ann... And said it wasn't the same. That's why she specifically said the Filipino version of this wrapper because the thin wrapper makes the crunch different. ☺️
Been seeing these in your vlogs for the past couple years! 🤣 Every single time I crave it & now there’s an official video for it I’m super excited to cook it. Looks super easy to make. But also takes time to roll I suppose!
What's your favorite dip for Lumpia... let me know!!!
Sweet and sour
Ketchup and Mayo
Sweet & sour , Chinese black bean chilli , Chinese black vinegar , or sesame sauce
What if we want to freeze them?? Freeze them without frying and do they have to be individually wrapped or together on a ziplock bag?? Thanks
I want it as is 😁 lumpia is staple for every handaan
Another advice: our family usually cooks one piece before wrapping everything. It allows us to taste test it first and adjust for salt and umami.
Better yet, write down your recipe so that it’s consistent every time. No need to check for flavor each time. Also, it allows future generations to enjoy without the guesswork.
@@edcastillo4456whatever you could have forgot something. Still a good idea to test it
