Your comparison to cancer is right on the money, actually. As the doctor once said, the reason people who have more than one quirk are susceptible to go brain dead and/or die early is because, if we're thinking of it in computer terms, having too much quirk "software" can overwhelm the body's "hardware" and cause it to shut down. So, in order to store more "software," Shigaraki's body needs to be able to expand and adapt to fit them. That's what those fingers are from -- his body literally growing and changing to suit his needs in the moment so he won't die from the overload. That constant and unstoppable growth is very similar to the concept of cancer, and the comparison has been made by lots of fans over the years.
