I think the members respect John's decision to have retired. Have you ever seen the documentary "The show must go on"? They didn't just inject a "younger singer" to bring the songs "back to life". Brian nd Roger pretty much thought they were done as a band but then their keyboard players wife saw Adam on American Idol, who ironically enough auditioned with "Bohemian Rhapsody" and she said you have to see this kid perform. He did and ended up showing Roger who then showed Brian and they loved him. They then by chance or perhaps fate performed on the finale of American Idol, where Adam was one of the two finalists. It is evident that Brian preferred playing to Adam that night because essentially they were auditioning him and he did not even know. He ended up "winning" by losing that competition because now he is a part of the biggest rock band ever. Freddy paved the way for someone like Adam to not only be able to perform whilst being openly gay but Adam quite literally gets to stand on a stage and carry on this amazing band and bringing it to a new audience. It is sad that people keep comparing them and that Adam quite literally has to say at every concert that he is not replacing Freddy. It is not a tribute band but it is a tribute to Freddy still. I would have like to have seen Adam perform "Who wants to live forever" due to everything that is happening in the world right now. I know this was a celebration for the Queen and though I don't think she would have minded, perhaps it would have come across a bit sad due to the passing of Prince Philip. Roger and Brian seems to be so happy when we see them on stage now and Adam is the reason they get to do that now, so perhaps it's time we give him the credit that is due to him.

Freddie can never be replaced, but Adam Lambert is a decent stand in and doesn't deserve the criticism from certain quarters.

I chuckle when reading all the ‘I miss Freddie’ comments. Adam has been with Queen for 10 yrs now… Brian and Roger adore him. He doesn’t try to copy Freddie - he does the songs his way. And.. more importantly.. Brian and Roger WOULDN’T BE THERE IF NOT FOR ADAM. PERIOD. Get over it folks.. be happy for them.. ALL of them.. bc they’re still out there having fun and singing their songs!!! BTW.. for those thinking Adam isn’t reverent enough - just watch some of the interviews and their concerts… he ALWAYS honors Freddie, Roger and Brian. ALWAYS!!!

No he canmt. He can’t sing rock, he can’t sing a cappella, he can’t build harmonies, he can’t stay away from overusing rubati and fermatas. Lambert is a very overhyped mediocre singer pimped out on the musically challenged audience by Maylor who need to sell tickets. It’s a travesty.

What a testament to the lasting power of their music and the legend that has been created! I think Freddie is smiling. Especially at the Queen and Padddington tapping in time! Time goes forward and I'm just so glad that this music is kept alive! Thank you!

I can't help it...The whole time I was only wishing Freddie was there, with his powerful voice. And, of course, John :-) Whatever someone may think, Freddie was bringing the best out of the band, pushing their limits as far as possible with each new performance (because "You're as good as your last show, that 's what people remember" - Freddie's words).
Yes, there was power missing to the Red Special, and there was no Freddie to challenge them, but we should take into consideration Dr.Brian's and Roger's age too..:-)
And, the crowd was able to enjoy the iconic songs played live again, that was nice to see.
Only We (you included) die hard fans, who have watched Queen with Freddie so many times (live or on YT :-) that we recognize every note, every small detail, even their moods or secret signes, only we can see the difference between then and now. But that's why Freddie still lives in our hearts.

Brian and Roger have all my respect - I'm glad they found a way to get out there and live the dream again - but I found this particular appearance unwatchable (but I did watch it all the way through with the family). Very glad others could enjoy. I'll leave it at that.

@ snjezana You & I both have some same thoughts in our brains & you said this better than I did on my comment. Thanks for your comment. Adam is good but the 2 Queen LEGENDS on that stage are cemented in our memories. When AL sings I organically tune out & hear Freddie's legendary voice. & recognize every note & every signal to each other as you explained so well. The younger fans love Adam but perhaps will never understand what the 4 Queen members gave to us over those 1970s & 1980s years. Q+Paul Rodgers & Q+AL are enjoyable but not even close to not just Freddie's voice but Freddie's charisma, charm, musical passion & legendary love for his fans. I actually think the " Q+Paul Rodgers in Ukraine concert " & their other live shows are the best "Q+" concerts ever done after they lost Freddie, everybody should play them & you'll be astounded how great, GREAT Paul is with Queen. Anyway, loved your comment. I hope the AL fans will understand one day. As John Deacon announced when he left Queen upon Freddie's passing, "There is no Queen without Freddie Mercury "... I think it should now be realized that there is no Queen without Freddie AND without JOHN DEACON as well.

We can be wistful about Freddie, but he's gone and Adam is here and he's a brilliant singer with camp charisma. And through him we can see brilliant performances of FREDDIE'S songs, alive and evolving and wrapped in the original band. We are lucky.

Thanks Hap! IMO, it wouldn’t have been the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee without our favorite band Queen! I too think Brian struggled with sound after We will Rock you? It seemed to finally came through in the last of We are the Champions. But in true Queen fashion, they continued like the professionals we know them to be, they delivered and delivered BIG!! It was great to hear Freddie, they never leave him out, and Adam Lambert sounds fantastic. The thing about Adam is he can consistently sing these songs, hard songs, and he very much looks and sounds the part. Not many in the world has those qualifications AND was selected by Brian and Roger? We cannot forget that fact.
Roger on those drums was a beautiful thing. And Spike on the piano. Just a great 3 song set and perfect for this moment in time! Miss Freddie and miss John and always will. But we still have Roger and Brian and that is a big deal! ❤️

I, too, missed Freddie for this performance. I miss Freddie....period. This is the first time hearing Adam Lambert sing with the boys. Previously, I just couldn't bring myself to listen without Freddie. Adam is OK but anyone singing Freddie is just OK. In the footsteps of Mr. Freddie Metrcury, being OK is a complement. I could not help becoming emotional when hearing this and in it's context. Playing at such an occasion is one of the highest forms of respect to the boys, too. I am anxious to hear the names, Sir Brian May and Sir Roger Taylor and, posthumously, Sir Freddie Mercury. Maybe John would come to his knighting ceremony. 😉 I respect your decision, John. Thanks for sharing this with us. I wasn't aware that this performance existed. Without subscriping to "our" channel and chosing to be notified of new reactions I would have missed this one.

Knighthood cannot be bestowed posthumously, which sucks. Off topic a bit but I thought Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees (one of the top 5 acts of all time) deserved one as well for his philanthropic and historic work. He was long time President of the British Heritage Society, driving force behind the Bomber command Memorial dedicated by the Queen a month after he died, patron of Outreach for underprivileged children, a spokesman for refugees and veterans, president of the Composer's Union that stopped songwriters from being ripped off AND for his singing and composing. Unlike his brother Barry who was knighted, he never took US citizenship and stayed in the UK. Neither John Lennon nor George Harrison were knighted either. There are a lot of people who deserved knighthood more than some who have received it. 😒 GAWD, the pervert pedophile Jimmy Savile was knighted!!!!!!

I searched this out on YT a few hours after it took place so this was my 2nd time seeing it. My first thought was Brian wasn't as high up as he was the last time I saw him play at the palace 😉 I wonder if because it wasn't a Queen (the band) concert, but instead FOR the Queen, if maybe they tamed it down a bit? But like you said it was still very good. I've never searched out Queen with Adam before. Maybe something to do and see how that song is played outside of a more formal event.
What songs would I choose besides these? So many! But of course some might not be a good fit for the occasion.
Sometimes it's easy and sometimes very hard to read you when you do reactions. This one was easy. I could feel you being proud of your country and especially with a favorite band playing a tribute to your Queen. Long may she reign.

  • @DonnaleaSpencer
    @DonnaleaSpencer 2 роки тому +6

After your reaction, I went back to my ABC channel recording & there they do sound clearer, louder & sharper. Their medley of songs was not as dynamic as you want the Red Special to sound. (perhaps there were limits set by the producer of the event)? I was happy they chose two of Freddie's songs out of the three! I just caught you wondering how Freddie's voice would be today. Well, we know Roger & Brian still both sing. Roger's vocals have aged a bit. He's got a pleasing, if more raspy (is that possible?), tone. Brian's voice today is actually quite young sounding. Very lovely. I'd like to think today Freddie's would be just fine. Powerful when required. Sweet and smooth as silk when not. Freddie performed for our hearts, not just our ears.

    • @lcbcreative
      @lcbcreative 2 роки тому +3

I honestly think Freddie would have been done with big tours by this time, although his voice would have remained magnificent. There were so many other artistic avenues he seemed to want to explore. I can imagine him continuing to write songs in many, many genres. His creativity seemed endless. From My Fairy King to A Winter's Tale. He would have been an excellent music producer also. Or maybe a composer of scandalous Broadway musicals. (a girl can dream!) I can definitely imagine him still singing - I just think the rock concert circuit would have gotten old for him. Wouldn't be like him to just stand at a microphone for two hours.

The Queen is 96. She was born in 1926 so she'd be almost 50 when Bo-Rhap was released and over 50 when all the songs played at the pageant were released. I doubt they're her personal favourites. They could be Charles's but I never had him down as a rocker. I think it's more to do with the songs being well-known sing-a-longs and apt for the occasion.

The two elderly gentlemen turned 73 (Roger) and 75 (Brian) in July. Well done . They were there 20 years ago - more majestic - with orchestra on the ground and Brian with his Red Special on the roof of Buckingham Palace - - playing God save the Queen. That was loud. Paddington and the Queen can actually rock, LOL! That WAS definitely Elizabeth. The whole bit with her and Paddington is very funny. You should have a look at it. Remember when she "parachuted" out of the helicopter with Daniel Craig at the last London Olympics? Of course it wasn't her but, followed by a herd of corgis, she went into the copter with Craig and she "parachuted" out with him. Then she entered the stadium wearing the same dress. Even the family had no clue she was going to do that or this bit. She does have a great sense of humour beneath that dignified demeanor. Queen Victoria's statue is looking down on them from behind thinking...WTF!!!!!
I never really cared for Adam before but he acquitted himself admirably (royally?) here. His performance seems more staged while Freddie's was more spontaneous. Will always miss Deaky.
As for the Queen, whether one approves or disapproves of a monarchy, she respected the tradition and did her job with dignity and devotion for SEVENTY years and dozens of PMs and Presidents and even prior to that in WW2 as a truck mechanic. Good for her. 👑👑

If the band was The Royal Marines, it's common practice and not a reference to Freddie (sorry!). I've just checked and yes - it was the Marines. From one of their community sites: "it imitates the arm swinging of the foot soldiers. As we have to drum whilst marching it is a bit like swinging our arms. In the drum statics it is for visual effect only". So - in this case - a convenient visual coincidence. :D

Roger and Brian CHOSE Adam because of his unmatched vocal abilities. How is it “karaoke” when the band literally chose him? It’s like everyone wants Queen to retire because Freddie died. This is madness. Both Roger and Brian know that Freddie would have loved and admired Adam as they do. The puritanical criticism of him irritates me immensely.
We all LOVE Freddie but seriously, the guy died. You either want to see the Surviving members rock the house down or not. I think it’s insanely bold and brave of Adam to get up there and face this constant scrutiny. He is a legend in his own right and he’s got the green light from me.

I’ve been a Queen fan for many many years , I was lucky enough to see them live with Freddie . I have also seen them with Adam live and he was brilliant , I thank God them finding him to front the band so that younger generations can appreciate Queens music . It’s not a competition, Freddie isn’t here ( R.I.P) and Adam is an AMAZING vocalist. As Rodger said on a documentary, if you don’t like it f*ck off ! Freddie wasn’t the only band member , Brian wrote We Will rock you , and We are the champions. . Along with lots of their hits , Radio GaGa , Fat Bottomed Girls , Flash , I want it all, Hammer , show must go on , Who wants to live forever to name a few . Queen wasn’t just Freddie Mercury they shouldn’t have to die with him. Anyone complaining isn’t a true Queen fan they are just a Freddie Mercury fan. And if they think Adam is karaoke they haven’t seen him live or they have no ear for music . He doesn’t try to be Freddie at all , he puts him own twist on there songs .

Other songs played for this event? Not certain whether any others would be appropriate, Hap. What I do know is that QAL had finished a 2.5-hour concert in Glasgow, not 15 1/2 hours prior to *this* performance in London. Remarkable! Especially for Brian, who turns 75 yrs/of age in a month, and Roger who is @72/3 yrs of age. Adam (a young 40-year-old) I've grown to truly appreciate what he contributes and the opportunity he provides for Queen and all their fans! Thank you for such a good reaction, Hap 🙂

In my opinion, it's not just the guitar mix. I think it's a bad mix all around. I don't like the way the vocals, drums, EQ, etc. are mixed either. It could be just the video. Hard to say. I would think they would have brought their own sound engineer but maybe they were not allowed? Who knows? That said, I still enjoyed it but while Adam had some outstanding vocal moments, I really, really missed Freddie. I think Freddie's vocals would have been fine but it doesn't matter what Freddie's voice would have sounded like, in my opinion, because the energy he brings to the band and the crowd sends everyone over the top to a level I've seen no one else achieve. Thanks for the reaction!

The royals are familiar with Queen. Charles and Diana sat with Brian and Roger at Live Aid. And Diana was friends with Freddie. Don't know if the bar story is true or not though.

    • @trishbelfield2864

Not according to Peter Freestone (from The Daily Expess): "No, not at all. Maybe Diana went with Kenny but Freddie wasn’t there. He never met her." He went on to tell us that even at Live Aid Freddie declined a chance to hang out with the princess: "You see Brian May and Roger Taylor in the royal box. Freddie didn’t go. He was more interested in being with friends backstage, talking with Elton John, hanging out with his people. His friends were always the most important to him." The "photo" of Freddie and Diana that exists is a photoshop. Diana's replaced Barbara Valentin.

RE red special sound….Apparently there were some sound issues, the rehearsals sounded far better according to those there.
As far as Freddie’s voice, that’s difficult to say. His voice wasn’t at its best by 1986 & it had changed significantly by 1989 due to the smoking….but of course changed again by 1990 due to his illness….
Set list was very limited due to time & also wanting to do uplifting stuff.

Whenever I see members of the band honored this way, and Brian and Roger certainly deserved to be there, it's a little bittersweet because I think if only things had been different Freddie would have been there too, but I guess that's life. I was imagining what it feels like for Brian and Roger to want Freddie and John to be there. I did see a short video clip recently where Brian said they had asked John a couple of times to perform with them and he always says he doesn't do that anymore. Makes me sad. The Queen 👑 shot the sequence with Paddington Bear 🐻 back in March. It had been in the works quite some time. When featurimg Queen I Iwish they would say Queen, with Adam Lambert rather than the assumption Queen is now Brian, Roger and Adam. It seems presumptuous to me. With that said, It wouldn't be a party/Jubilee without Queen. I, too was waiting for the red spevial🎸 guitar sequence, it was greatly missed. I love the music of, Queen, but am not a big fan of Adam Lambert, he goes at it so hard, that he misses nuances of the songs. Adam seems to try too hard to compete with Freddie and no one will EVER, be able to do that. Adam needs to make it his own and maybe show a bit more reverence. The crowd seemed to have a great time! 🎶 Hap, I can see the wheels turning in your head. I respect your reactions so much, as they are so honest and spot on, love your POV!!! Peace J ✌ ☮💕

I have been a Glambert since Adam auditioned for American Idol in 2009. Of course I have heard Queen’s original music with Freddie on vocals but I have attended 5 QAL concerts and have watched thousands of QAL performances on UA-cam. I prefer Adam’s voice to Freddie’s. He can hit all the notes live that Freddie struggled with. You would be hard pressed to find bum notes coming out of Adam’s golden vocal chords. Adam has reinvigorated Brian and Roger’s passion in performing these iconic rock songs and they are introducing Queen’s music to many younger generations that were not familiar with them. Keep rocking, Queen + Adam Lambert!

You're right. It sounded to me also like the mix was off. I'm not sure if it was the mix at the venue, the mix to the recording or the mix on this particular video (I've noticed that with other live videos, where the mix on various videos differs even though the video is actually the same one). if it was the mix at the venue, there could have been multiple reasons. Since the stage was being used for multiple artists, it could be they weren't able to use their own sound engineer & the sound engineer working the show was unfamiliar with their music or just screwed up. It also could be the sound changed drastically from sound check when you got the tens of thousands of people gathered & the sound engineer wasn't able to compensate (I've worked shows where when the crowd shows up the entire sound in the venue changes & then the sound engineer spends the first 2 or 3 songs adjusting for the change).
There are multiple reasons and points for it to go wrong. I'm just very pleased they got to participate and were able to share their energy & joy with all those people & the world.

@@valogden It absolutely could, but crowd noise would probably affect their timing with each other & pitches of the notes they were singing as opposed to the loudness of each instrument & the mix of those instruments together. Where the crowd noise could affect the mix is that the sound engineer couldn't hear well enough to compensate for any discrepancies from sound check and the set was so short there really wasn't a lot of time to make noticeable improvements.

I like Adam - he seems a really, personable guy but I'm not a huge fan of his voice or his interpretation, particularly when he channels musical theatre. I didn't like the dramatic tremolo and hand waving in DSMN and there were moments in WWRY when he reminded me of Jessie J singing the same song at the London Olympics. It all felt a bit OTT (more Broadway than Rock Concert). And yes - the situation demanded it but I've seen other videos and felt the same. The exception was WWTLF after Orlando, which I thought was sublime. My ideal would be Adam singing ballads and Paul Rodgers doing the rocking. As for Fred being there. IDK - Rod Stewart and Elton were pretty shite at this event but Leonard Cohen improved with age.

Brian always turns his amps up to full volume so it may just be that there is a sound limit at the palace or the recording is set to filter out the crowd noise so it didn't interfere with the music. I am sure that Queen will remaster and spruce up the recording in their own studios soon and we will have a video with great sound. The crowd was really engaged, moving and singing to every note so that is a joy to behold and well worth Queen stepping off of their tour for a day to do this little mini show. Also, depending upon the security factors, that might not be Brian's original Red Special but one of the ones he manufactures for sale. Even on stage, he has at least one other Red Special in case he breaks a string or something. The manufactured ones sound great but they are not exactly the same for many reasons. From what I have heard, the switches are in a different series because apparently Brian's guitar has a tiny bit of a buzz that he has always had to deal with that he designed out of the manufactured guitars for sale.
