The Ventures are:
Don Wilson - Rhythm Guitar - (co-founder in 1958)
Bob Bogle - Lead and Bass Guitar- (co-founder in 1958), passed away in 2009
Nokie Edwards - Lead and Bass Guitar- (joined in 1960)
Gerry McGee - Lead and Bass Guitar- (joined in 1968)
Mel Taylor - Percussion, passed away in1996
Bob Spalding - Lead and Bass Guitar- (joined in 1981)
Leon Taylor - Percussion - (joined in 1996, son of Mel Taylor)
The Ventures remain active, recording and touring to the delight of fans around the world. 2008 marked the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the band, truly a remarkable accomplishment. It also saw their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band celebrates their official 50th Anniversary in 2009, with a special tour in Japan, shows in the US and Canada, and multiple CD releases.
The Ventures are considered by many to be the greatest "surf band". The Best Selling Instrumental Rock Band in Music History.

Nokie wasn't really didn't have a good ear for the sound the guitar was actually putting out later in life. Bob Bogle seemed to care more for the tonal characteristics of his guitar. That's why he used his Jazzmaster which had a magnificent surf sound unlike any others including the Moserite.

I agree. The Dakotas original '63 version does sound better but, I've never heard anyone say that Nokie played poor lead work. The Ventures had their own style of playing and with out them doing covers from other groups, those tunes might have been long forgotten by now. You are also comparing a live performance with a studio recording.
