The videos are top notch. Chris explains all the mechanics of the golf swing very clearly in the videos he has produced. They are all categorised as well. If I feel I'm struggling a bit an aspect of my swing there's normally a video I can refer too which helps me correct the issue. Best golf instruction on the net by far. Great job Chris keep it up.
This has been such a game changer for me. I always tried to do this on the downswing but always struggled with the proper timing. Hit a fad all the time. Had a buddy tell me to try this starting the backswing. It’s the weirdest feeling at first but once I got used to it, completely changed my game. Hitting it flush and straight every time and staring added distance for sure. This is the best drill to get the feeling of bowing your wrist.
Chris, this has been a fantastic piece coaching for me to improve club head delivery of the driver. By focusing on flat lead wrist at the top and keeping it through the downswing I have gained much better control and dispersion off the tee. Haven't had to think about it with my irons but wow, what a difference in control gains with the big stick. Such a great vid.
I have never saw a video that explained this and I wondered how to do this. I played today and my score was 6 shots better. I hope that continues. Thanks
I've been working on this the last few weeks. I remember when Tiger was saying some years ago how he worked hard to make sure his lead wrist was flat and felt like he was hitting the ball with the back of his flat lead hand..
A cupped wrist at impact is something I've struggled with recently - this tip, and also one of your other videos to get the feel of hands inside the club head during take-away and hands outside the club head coming into impact has definitely made a difference.
Thank you Chris. A coach told me to bow my wrist at the very top of my back swing (for more power?) but I think I make better/more consistent contact with your method; i.e. get it flat keep it flat
Best explanation yet on golf swing I've seen. Others carry on about too many other moving parts. I've found that if the lead wrist is correct, there are only a few other things to change like alignment and ensuring you are swinging down the line towards target.
The palms together drill made it make so much more sense to me. My mrs wondered why I stood up in the middle of dinner to do this - but it’s working wonders on the course
Loving your videos Chris. Very straight forward content. I am off 8 handicap and use your videos to check that my basics are good. But your videos on Chipping and pitching have been a game saver. Thanks for your help.
Well done Chris! I'm so tired of playing army golf...left-right-left-right...without ever understanding the problem! I can see from this video that my wrist position at impact is the likely culprit as you clearly describe my circumstances! Thank you so much for explaining this to me in such easy to understand detail! You can be very proud of your work here, keep it up!
Fantastic video. Very relevant to me as I am often confused about the timing in particular about when and how to bow the lead wrist. Thank you for yet another outstanding video.
Fantastic drill to feel the flat wrist on the way back. I have been looking for something like this for ages as I know its cupped at the top causing slices. Thanks Chris.
Really like your videos. Ive watched loads of golf tutorials but I just seem to "get" the way you explain things more than others. Thanks very much! Keep up the awesome vids. The chicken wing video is one thats helped me no end.
mi1ne golf instruction has long been a get rich quick scheme and they intend to keep it that way #chrisryangolf understands that his payoff will be in the long run and the game of golf will be better off. I don't know if he's coaching anyone on tour, he should be.
Hello Chris. Although this is an old video I often come back to it. I understand that releasing the club and getting to a flat wrist at impact are two different things, I have recently (especially working with my woods off the tee) been wondering if I could combine releasing the club before impact and getting to a flat wrist in the same motion and delivering this straight lead arm to the ball. Will this cause other issues? The alternative which I have traditionally been trying is holding on to the angle (usually resulting in quite a bowed lead wrist) and fully releasing the club after impact. What are your thoughts please?
found your drill very simple to understand and found since using this drill in my swing I'm making better contact with the ball and get more distance from my clubs, thanks chris
Would you say that maintaining a bit of cup at the top allows the swing arc to be slightly longer and produce more clubhead speed, or is this a fallacy? Look forward to seeing you back on the course soon (fingers crossed) ;)
Thanks again Chris. With a neutral grip the tendency is to cut the ball as my left wrist slides forward dragging the handle. Will work on flattening the left wrist on the way back. Eric Cogorno addresses this one..
This video is perfect. The part that you tell about seeing the top of the back of the hand versus not seeing the back of the hand is so simple it’s ridiculous. I am a very good golfer but lately is was having square club face problems, not so now! Saved me a bundle 💵 by seeing this easy to understand video and not my golf teacher, and now , SQUARE FACE AT IMPACT!! Simple show and tell always beats technical BS. 🙏
Thanks Chris, you da man for keeping us on track. I have been watching this video over and over. As I watch I am translating the information in my mind to what it feels like. This is key for me.
This is interesting, Chris. I was always a slicer of woods, but had a good swing path. I determined I was unconsciously opening the club head. I permanently fixed it by flexing my wrist at the top of the back swing. By doing it at the top, rather than in the backswing, I got the added bonus of not rushing the downswing. It works for me.
Hey Chris another great video! Can you please explain the lead wrist flat with the right wrist also? For me I think ppls are having a cupped lead wrist because they want to use the right hand so much and are chasing the "whip" feeling of the right hand; when the right hand dominating the downswing, of course the right hand will be straightened, and of course the left wrist will be cupped, and of course the club face will be opened.
Great vid, you mentioned it would help those "who feel the hands are behind the ball" at impact, would that scenario be a big contributor to lack of roll-out with driver - this seems like it would be a perfect solution for that ??
Chris, Can you please explain to me when you do the demonstration of a cupped left wrist after Dustin Johnsons impression how the left wrist is actually cupped? I See the left wrist in a very bode position with the club face open, when you get parallel to the toe line on the down swing hence why the miss is right or a flip? Im very confused from your demonstrations.
I enjoyed the video. Would it help me to feel the downswing being initiated by my left hand pulling the club down? Also, should I feel as if the outside of my left hand is square to the ball at impact. I am struggling with pushing the ball to the right or pulling it to the left. Thanks!
Great video. However, if I adjust the left wrist flat at the top, I result in a little more open club face, thus the ball now consistently goes left! How to fix? How about over- adjust my grips to a closer club face at address to compensate for subsequent "opening up'? Thanks! Philip
Great video as always Chris! With the wrist flattened at the top of the backswing, does the left arm feel as though it is the dominant arm pulling and carrying the club down and through?
Great video! One quick question... I am athletic and strong but I'm only about 5'5" so obviously my swing arc is a lot smaller than someone who is 6 feet tall. My USGA handicap is 4.2 so I am a decent player and hit the ball fairly straight. However because of my size I don't create as much whip and therefore my swing speed is less than a lot of other good players. Will I pick up a few mph of speed if I flatten on the way down as opposed to on the way back? Even adding a half a club into a green would be a big deal.
Chris I really enjoy your videos. Along with my forward press I hinge the right wrist which flattens the left wrist. I set the wrist really early on and just get it out-of-the-way and I seem to hit the ball much better this way. Is it possible to hinge the right wrist too quickly because like I said I like to get it out-of-the-way early - Thanks
Hi Chris I am a cramped crumbled swinger with a narrow swing . Are there any tips you can give me to assist and to get the left wrist flat please. Many thanks Trevor
Very nice Chris. I been working on this. The thing I had watch was making sure I didn't roll the left wrist outside on the way back just to 'achieve a position'.
This video literally change my golf game for the better! I always played with that cupped wrist because that felt natural! Too bad natural sometimes is wrong! Thanks for this video!! Can’t wait to get to the range
ChrisRyanGolf wrist is very important but what also Ive learned is keeping my back elbow/left elbow as I’m left handed, pinned to side of my chest. My elbow use to be to high and that leads to OTT and all sorts of bad!! Love your videos man keep it up!!
Just the vlog I required. I've developed a slice / fade which was the result I think! , of me cupping the wrist at the top which was a result of me trying to get too much backswing / shoulder turn! keeping a straight wrist does restrict my backswing, but hopefully I should regain some consistency!? am I on the right lines? Cheers
Any advice on how to time the release while using this lead wrist held flat to impact? I've watched the other video on timing the release and I'm guessing there may be some fine details that may need to be applied if you keep the wrist flat. But I may be over thinking it.
Great video, Chris. I’ve been trying this drill recently but I now have a tendency to strike the turf then the ball now. I know this is a question with many possible answers but what could be the issue? Not enough lower body rotation?
Outstanding video! This was one of my major problems. Thanks for being so thorough. Does this also carry over to the driver? I have a problem was hooking my driver because of flipping (over active hands).
this is my third or forth review of this video and I find that this is my problem. working on the bowed wrist is helping a lot but I still go left to right with the longer clubs. (driver for sure) your newest video shows how to drop the club in the back swing to put the club in a under position which will help the reduce going over the top. I see that the bowed wrist will put you in that position . Am I correct ? .Thanks for your great videos and instruction
Great video. What if we set our lead wrist flat when addressing the ball, aiming along target line? This would guarantee the club face aiming to target upon impact? Help?!
Amazing results. Thanks for your excellent advice. I'm a lefty senior and have been playing about 60 years. My drives used to be 230+ before I retired and in the last few years have dropped to 180+ and usually a fade. After two rounds following your instructions, I've been hitting laser shots down the middle and 200-225 yards. I wish I had known this long ago. I now bow my wrist during the backswing.
Chris I do cup my left wrist (right handed golfer) and trying to straighten it if not bow it, would a forward press before takeaway set the position to do this? is this something you would recommend as I would imagine you setting the position earlier or will this give other problems ie. closing club face?
Hi Chris, is flattening of the lead wrist a result of "laying shaft down" in the downswing? With doing it in the backswing, is that lay down then still a thing? Seems like it flattens the plane in the backswing already. Or is there actually no intended connection between these two things? Cheers
+Julian Meier hi Julian, you can flatten the wrist in the backswing without affecting the plane too much. Flattening the shaft in the downswing and flattening the wrist to have a connection though.
ChrisRyanGolf Great, thanks for clarification. ps: Broke 90 yesterday for the first time (88). Took 8 shots of my handicap yet since the online lesson. Don't know about the others but you def nailed that one!
I find that when i do this i dont get as much wrist cock and my backswing gets WAY shorter and i cant generate the same amount of power. Any tips to getting that distance back? Is it down to more hip and shoulder rotation?
Chris - isnt there a risk that this move helps get the club 'behind' you on the backswing? Jason Dufner as an example does not take the angle out (indeed Dan W's analysis talks about how he keeps this angle in his takeaway) - how do you ensure that the club doesnt get behind you with this? Thanks for considering the point as this is one that I am struggling with. Best regards, Frank
You are worried about nothing, I think you are repeating something that you heard. You've got to look at shaft angle, do this using mini swings and focus on shaft and writs alingment, you should be looking at your wrist not the golfball, developing a proper hand path with make pure contact with ball regardless of where you are looking.
Brilliant 3ball drill using your shadow!! Simple and very, very effective takes out all unnecessary lateral movement, keep up the brilliant instruction.
It was presenting.. Footballers playing a rider cup style of competition. Great britain v The rest of the world. Lee westwood captaining the GB team. just caught the end of it. Probably a charity thing? i dont know..
I can achieve this with a strong right hand grip at address (I'm right handed), but is this an incorrect way of accomplishing a flat left (leading for right handers) wrist at impact? And, I've seen elsewhere (don't remember; years ago; Hogan book?) that the leading wrist should be slightly bowed at impact. Bad idea?
ChrisRyanGolf think I might just be masking it on my irons better with my hand path. Just watched your hand path video lol. Lots to test out on the range next time. Thanks
Good video. All things I'm working on. It can be quite maddening when your bad iron shots are ruining an otherwise decent score. I WILL fix this problem or die trying. Lol.
You mentioned 2 methods to flatten the wrist which is slightly bowed at setup: do it on the backswing or on the downswing. Why not flatten it during setup? Instead of your club pointing at your belt-buckle, point it at approximately the first belt loop to your left (for a right-handed golfer). When viewed face-on, your club and left arm are on the same line, so your wrist can be flat. Doesn't this just take-out another possibility of error?
Hey Mark, absolutely you could do it at set up. I think the reason that this isn’t coached is because it can become difficult to maintain good body positions required in order to move correctly, but you are spot on it could work 👍
Mark Liquorman Yes! This needs to be stressed more! Keep club in line with lead arm at setup and that flattens wrist at address which then you just keep to the top of the swing then through the downswing
The videos are top notch. Chris explains all the mechanics of the golf swing very clearly in the videos he has produced. They are all categorised as well. Top notch video!!!... I would say one of the most critical factors to the golf swing and in this video you really coached on it perfectly
A great, simple tip on this video. For me Chris is the best golf instructor going. Watch all of his videos if you can.

Fascinating video about how to control the club face. Will be trying that drill out.
This is something I've struggled with for years. I'll take this to the range with me now see I can make some progress. Thanks for the drill

Thanks Chris as always great instruction. One instruction wish-list I'm interested in is the trail arm slightly bent at impact.
This helps me a great deal. Thanks Bossman

Hi Philip, yes some amount of this can certainly help, leaning the handle forwards tends to flatten the wrist a little so can help certainly 👍
Thanks very much, Chris. Very helpful. How can I purchase your videos, if any?
The two-hands-together drill really makes it easy to see what you're describing.
Hi Chirs, Great video, this is one of my problems i wil work on it, thanks.
Amazing results. Thanks for your excellent advice. I'm a lefty senior and have been playing about 60 years. Another great video Chris you have made me understand the theory of the golf swing.
Another well explained video Chris, thankyou.
what helped me was trying to make the club face point at the ball when I'm taking it back.
Great video, Chris. This is a drill I can really use. Thanks.
does this apply to the fairway wood and Driver?
What if you have a slightly strong grip for your lead hand or left hand for right hand golfers
great job showing us where the leading wrist should be
Hi Chris, is flattening of the lead wrist a result of "laying shaft down" in the downswing? With doing it in the backswing, is that lay down then still a thing? Seems like it flattens the plane in the backswing already. Or is there actually no intended connection between these two things? Cheers
+Julian Meier hi Julian, you can flatten the wrist in the backswing without affecting the plane too much. Flattening the shaft in the downswing and flattening the wrist to have a connection though.
ChrisRyanGolf Great, thanks for clarification. ps: Broke 90 yesterday for the first time (88). Took 8 shots of my handicap yet since the online lesson. Don't know about the others but you def nailed that one!
left wrist has been my problem. I was so focused on keeping my left arm straight. this makes a lot of sense. thank you
Thanks and glad it helped 👍
Great videos. Clear and concise !
Holy cow. You just fixed my flip with one simple tip.. Thank you.
+Mike Flo thanks Mike
Can this be achieved by feeling like I start "fanning" the club upwards from the setup?
What is the starting grip? Strong or neutral?
Look forward to trying this out , thanks
I find that when i do this i dont get as much wrist cock and my backswing gets WAY shorter and i cant generate the same amount of power. Any tips to getting that distance back? Is it down to more hip and shoulder rotation?
Great video Thanks Chris

This is gold to me.

I think I'm a flipper. .y shots are high a d short. I needed this. Thanks!
Thanks
this video is gold!
The Dstgolf compressor puts one in that shaft/left forearm alignment
Similar to the coat hanger drill......great video
Thanks 👍
