Great technique! I'm in the process of rediscovering the closed guard for my game and Dan's "Black Magic" DVD is highly useful to me. Thank you guys so much!
That's the only criticism I have with Bernardo's most recent omaplata everyone videos, it doesn't show you any good ways to break down pasture, and in no GI I've been struggling with this. Opening the window looks great... I'll try that tonight!
Sergio Arroyo i think its to assist you while shifting your hips far enough so that you're perpendicular to your partner and can reach the far leg and be in the best position to complete the sweep (not certain though just an educated guess)
I agree with Bryan, it helps to reach the far leg, that is the goal. If you try to go straight to the far leg, it can be hard, so you first to the closer leg, and then to the far leg. OSSS
Black Magic Closed Guard, awesome stuff

Can it be applicable in no-gi too?
John2corner I guess you could.
Nice! But what happens if the guy doesn't stand up?
Still works! It's tougher to feed the lapel to the head-control hand, and it's tougher to sweep...but you can still finish with a flower/Xande sweep.
Nothing stops him from posting as you sweep.
I guess those two high-level black belts are showing a flawed technique that you could counter easily...
great technique!
may I ask what is the purpose of the first underhook?

Bryan Nicholas yes. In addition, it makes it harder for the guy on top to stack.

thanks for the help guys! great videos professor! please keep them coming! :)
Not saying i could stop this move, but Bernardo's starting posture was not ideal. Again, I'm sure i couldn't stop this once my posture was broken.
