    Oh gosh, that ⿰清氣 character looks monstrous, it almost reminds me of those scary-looking Chinese characters used to transcribe Old Church Slavonic!
    PS: This is your very first video and it’s amazing, what were you on about in the comments under the other video?! The quality is immaculate!!

    • @SwedishSinologyNerd
      @SwedishSinologyNerd  7 місяців тому +2

      You can't be serious, I sound anemic AF, like a dusty old Oxbridge professor with one foot in the grave droning on and on inside an equally dusty lecture room xD
      If you like monstrous characters, the ones used to transcribe Sanskrit are pretty out there as well. Also Chu Nom characters, those things get pretty cray-cray like the character black, (one version of) which is 黑 on top of 顛. It's absolute anarchy and I love it.

      @@SwedishSinologyNerd I’m serious… Your harshest critic is always going to be yourself :) I liked this video as well as the 地 one. Will soon keep watching!
      Lol, 黑 on top of 颠… I wish it was encoded by Unicode so bad just to see what it would look like here in the comments (I’m using my phone)… Probably just one thick white square (I’m using dark mode)…

    its not only hiragana, the katakana of te テ also comes from 天, and given how katakana literally means "partial characters", you can easily see its origin

    • @SwedishSinologyNerd
      @SwedishSinologyNerd  9 місяців тому

      Lol I totally forgot the katakana while I was making this video, will do a devoted video about the development of Hiragana and Katakana in the future tho.

      I have seen other theories too, katakana often have visual overlap with multiple characters... 手 seems it could have originated テ, but using the native reading and not the chinese one

    Interesting that before the chinese knew of 天 and used it to mean 首, they used 朕 to mean personal pronoun of a ruler[originally was to mend boat], it seems that this meaning of 天 was an old fosilised meaning of it as 首, bc 天 looks like it could be created 10000年 ago, and 朕 looks complex, like it was created sometime later, people had to come up how create boats and how to picture boat mending. 弗疾朕天。

    • @SwedishSinologyNerd

      That’s the tricky thing about logographic scripts! Take the characters 木 and 薪 for example, the former is a very simple pictograph of a tree, the latter (even in its earliest form that looked like 亲) is a complex logo-phonetic glyph, but 薪 is derived from the common Sino-Tibetan word for tree and should, logically, be the older and simpler character, but not so. I’d say there are two reasons for this: 1)languages and scripts evolve somewhat independently of each other, and 2) we actually do not know the exact origin and early development of Chinese characters, seeing as they were likely first written on wood and bamboo slips that rotted away long ago…

    Hey, brand new to far east etymologies. Always scared of how connected European languages are, compared to the infinity distant (maybe an error on my behalf) patterns between Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and more (not including Thai, as they are SE Asia for starters). But this video alone is a kickstarter for me. Keep at it!

    • @SwedishSinologyNerd
      @SwedishSinologyNerd  2 роки тому +2

      Wow, thanks a lot! ^^ Far Eastern languages are a lot... messier than European ones, etymology wise. For example, Chinese languages are unrelated to Thai or Vietnamese despite them all being tonal languages, but Chinese IS related to Tibetan and Burmese, Japanese has it's own language group and then you have a whole group of steppe languages including Mongolian, Tungusic, Turkic etc languages that often SEEM connected but are more often than not just sharing vocab with each other. In comparison, Chinese Characters are way less maddening =D
