It’s great to be polite on the trails, nothing better then a good morning or a G’day and a thank you
Not with anxiety. Then it's more "please don't talk to me, please don't talk to me" whenever you cross another person.
This is the first series that I've seen that is going to do a direct comparison between steel and aluminum. A lot of people talk about it, but never compare apples to apples. Really looking forward to seeing the next vid!
Direct comparison to the Big Al coming soon. Make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss it.
Also, i changed my microphone setup for this review. I used a lavaliere mic, so you'll hear far less bike and far more voice.
nice but too many first person cam, prefer some third view on technical areas
@sdq sdq I hear what you're saying, but taking multiple 5 min breaks in the middle of ride to set up a camera on a tripod to get 3rd person footage really kills the flow and feel of a bike. It makes the focus about the video production, not the review of the bike. It's also not very representative of a normal ride, since I'd be stopping so much. It would pull me out of the moment, and then I'd have to get back into the review mindset after every break, and I fear the bike would pay the price. Not to mention the erratic heart rate I'd have.
I realize it's more entertaining to watch 3rd person (i definitely prefer watching 3rd person vid as well), but it would actually have a negative effect on my reviews. For these review videos, the information is the priority.
On my non-review rides I try to provide 3rd person footage whenever possible. It really provided a context that you miss on the pov stuff. This trail looks pretty flat and mellow in pov mode, but for those who have been here before they know it's quite rocky and bumpy.
I find myself at a crossroads: either release 2-3 videos a week, or two a month with good camera work. I have decided on the former. At the moment I have so many bikes in for review that reviews are taking priority. I try to prioritize information over production value for these; it's the best use of my time right now. I would love to be able to easily add 3rd person shots though, they add a lot to the story.
All that said, I wish I had an entire film crew like PinkBike to capture multiple 3rd person shots from multiple angles, with slomo, and a dedicated person to edit them. That would be awesome!
Audio sounds great!
@@hardtailparty Those of us stuck in the absolute absence of topography that is the plains quite appreciate your 1st person views. I like the pov cam as it let's me see both a review and sort of experience a ride that would be a 6 hour drive just to have something even resembling.
Love Your trail manners. Thats the Way to greed hikers and other trail users.
Ps I have a 1st gen Ragley Blue pig I still ride from time to time 🤟🏼
Just recently found your channel. I can't wait to try out my 2023 Big Wig. Geo changed and Ive been reading they have improved that seat angle and wheel base. Just waiting on my rear brake spacer. Built it from the frame up. Hard to beat their prices as well. Love your reviews. Thanks again.
I ride a '20 BigWig race and love it for smashing my local Colorado black/double black trails, but also set PRs on every blue/green on this vs. my full squish.
Seems like a "zen" bike you'd take to just go ride around and relax on a ride, but still be able to take on some decent obstacles along the way if you wanted to.
Teravail tire magic combo: Kessel front, Ehline rear. Riding Cuyuna, Tioga & Redhead in Minnesota, all iron mine soil, which is similar soils/rock as Sedona, that is what you want. If someone is riding more soil, roots, loam it changes to Kessel/Honcho.
Another great Ragley video been waiting for the steel version ride love this channel keep up the good work happy riding
Ordered a bigwig race hopefully be happy with it
The color on that frame is pretty sick. That'll be a really good looking bike
Great job Steve!!! I’m a steel man myself but judging from the two reviews I bet your hedging towards the aluminum frame over the steel!! Great to see a real time comparison between the two frames and not just verbal diarrhea on what’s rides better!! Looking forward to your final verdict and conclusion on the Steel vs Aluminum bikes!!.,
@Concrete Head my personal experience I had a Kona Wozo aluminum fatbike with a Manitou Mastodon 120mm pro fork, road that bike over 2 years. I bought my first steel rigid fatbike a Surly Pugsley set it up single speed and after riding that bike for a Couple months decided to take out the Wozo and didn’t like it. Ended up selling the frame and fork and ordered a Surly Wednesday frame putting the parts on it with a carbon fork. I’m a bigger guy 6 feet 212 pounds and weight doesn’t bother me Wednesday is 31 pounds, Pugsley is 32 pounds. Riding 2 steel rigid bikes is no problem. Frame absorb the trail chatter and it definitely gives me a better ride than the aluminum one with 120 mm of travel. I constantly do 80-120+ km rides on them. Different strokes for different folks I guess!!!
I had been looking forward to this review, I have a 2019 Big Al and was very interested in the difference between the steel frame and the Aluminum. I'm glad I went with the Aluminum version!
Why are you glad you went Aluminium? Weight?
@@edlorenz1552 weight & compliance. Ragley makes some of the most compliant aluminum frames already, so it's hard to imagine the steel being compliant enough to justify the weight. I own a 2020 mmmbop and had to make the same call & don't regret it! HTparty heavily influenced my decision 😎
Its always a bummer when someone removes your favorite micro-trail feature... In your case the root. Someone removed a small rock on my trail, leaving a 10" diameter hole instead of a bump on the trail. I found the rock out in the brush, and replaced it. Ah, all was good in my tiny universe... for the rest of the ride.
I know exactly how that feels, peeps going around removing challenging parts of the trail. Don’t remove, session!
Really enjoyed the review as always. Years ago I had a Ragley Blue Pig X which was a beautiful ride. It seems Ragley have kept on making very impressive bikes for sensible money. They are hard to beat and comparing it to a Chromag, and preferring it, says it all really. 👍👍
I enjoy the extra sound from the other microphone . Its sounds more natural.
I bought this frame after yours review. Thanx for yours work.
Awesome! Only channel of its kind doing this!
Great review - I have the 2020 Big Wig so exact same frame. Absolutely love the frame (i built mine up from frame only). Definitely recommend it
I actually bought a 2021 BigWig frame but am seriously tempted to swap for a Big Al on the strentght of Steve's reviews as I sure could use the money saved to complete the build plus the weight saving would be nice. I've been on steel for years though so it's a tough choice. How does your Big Wig compare to other steel hardtail you've ridden?
Went for a downhill rooty ride last weekend. It was 2 hours harsh, exhausting ride with my Bigwig. Tried BTR belter and pipedream moxie bike. These two frames muted vibration better than Bigwig
Did they have the same wheels and tires and fork and pressures?
Got a BigWig frame (incidentally while reading Watership Down) because Orange delayed the shipment of the Clockwork Evo and then Brexit kicked in and blah blah. I could not be happier. I always though that it was imposible to really notice the difference between aluminum or steel in a frame in terms fo stiffness-compliance-suppleness..., but everything that you say in the video is absolutely true. Fortunately it matches my riding style perfectly. I have fallen in love with cromo steel, there is no coming back!!
Will you be doing a review of the blue pig and compare to the Mmm bop? Maybe you can do a 4x comparison with the Big Wig, Big Al, mmm Bop, and blue pig. They’re all essentially same bike with aluminum vs and 27.5 vs 29. I have a older 2016 blue pig on 27.5x2.8’s front/rear and love it! I think you will too. I was surprised even an older 2016 frame could house maxxis 2.8’s. Loving the channel, keep it up!
That would be a fun comparison. It'd be a lot of work though, and I don't have any 27.5" wheels or forks at the moment. Ragley sent me a big al and big wig this year. I don't have access to a blue pig or a piglet. However, I would assume that the findings between the big Al and big wig would translate to the mmmbop and the blue pig.
Nice review. It seemed like a quiet bike. Thanks!
I swapped my microphone to a lapel mic for this one. Way less bike noise (for better or for worse). That said, it's a pretty quiet bike.
I’d be curious to hear more about chainstay length and front center ratios. You should make a video on that.
It's in the works, i just have a lot of reviews that take priority at the moment.
@@hardtailparty awesome! I work in the bike industry, and have done for a while, and I’ve still learned a lot watching your videos. Keep it up!
@@danjdavison Thanks for the kind words Dan.
I really hope you can get a production privee once!
I've reached out to them many times. I hope they update their geo.
@@hardtailparty their hardtail is like 5 years old now?!? But that chainstay yoke looks very appealing
Interesting dropper routing and insert. The stays are really unique too. I’m looking forward to the comparison to the Big Al with frame details and differences.
Thanks Steve, great comparisson. For a 6´4 & 245lb guy like me, wich is better, trying returning to a HT after already asked warranty on a 2022 Scott Spark broken rear end.
I want another hard tail it's been 10 years and wow they have come a long way
New mic is good. Cant wait for the comparison vid!!
I really look forward to all of your bike reviews. You do a great job of telling us what the bike is giving you. And even if a bike isn't good for you, you do a great job of letting us know who would love it and what type of terrain it excels at. You do it better than anyone else I've seen. Keep it up!
Ragley seems to have their bikes really figured out. Their geo is always spot on. I'd buy one in an instant if the ever did a 29+ bike.
Thanks for the kind words. I can actually fit 29x2.8 in these frames. The world needs more 29+ hardtails.
Nice to hear you can fit a tire that large. But I'm not ready to go down from a 3.0 any time soon. I'd love to get my hands on a Chromag Arcturian, just worried a 160mm fork would be too much for my trails in Northeast Ohio.
@@sixate I share the same concerns. I have some exciting bikes to reveal on the channel in the future that you're going to dig.
@@hardtailparty such a tease! I'll be anxiously waiting. Got my Slack-R tonight for my Stache. Busy work week and not enough daylight so won't get to test it out until Saturday.
How does the Bigwig feel compared to the Cotic BFe max?
Ta vidéo a été l'élément qui a fait que j'ai acheté le kit cadre, il est en montage dans mon atelier et j'ai hâte de le tester dans la région française certe mais bien sympathique.
Merci pour toutes tes vidéos 👍
Congratulations!
Cool review 💪 I was kinda surprised this scored lower points in comparison to the Big Al. I wonder if running it in "xc mode", like you did for the banshee, would mitigate that heavy feel your describing and make it shine
Doubt it. The issue was more the weight than the geo. Of course a more XC oriented geo is going to climb better, but then you'd peel off some of the downhill aspects of it.
When you tell people you’re all alone you should also sound a bit sadder and maybe let out a small whimper or cry. Great review! Thanks
The seattube is bent - however nice it is to be able to fit longer dropper, if you remove the sticking out top part, there would simply be not enough straight tube to clamp over a dropper.
Absolutely the right answer. Assuming they chose a chainstay length and seat tube angle they wanted, they required a bent seat tube to achieve those parameters and still have reasonable tire clearance. The seat tube length above the top tube has to be the compromise to allow for dropper insertion with that bend. It's a tough balancing act trying to get as long a dropper as possible into a frame. You need a short enough seat tube to make the saddle height not be too high work but at the same time, enough seat tube for the long insertion required. So often overlooked, a longer dropper needs more insertion. And the manufacturer has to make assumptions on average body proportions. Can't be too short legged or long legged for a given frame size without needing to replace the dropper.
You are correct, that bend is going to limit insertion. However, they could have kept the seat tube straighter for longer to achieve what i'd love to see.
@@hardtailparty For sure. I can't say if they were going for a certain aesthetic or maybe trying to give themselves a bit more room for the weld with the junction of the seat tube, bottom bracket, and down tube but if they had moved the bend down a bit lower more like the the Honzo ESD has, they could have kept a reasonable straight length and shortened the overall seat tube length. They only put the bend on their 29ers so it's clearly a functional compromise for them to get tire clearance and shows that they aren't opposed to straight seat tubes like they have on their 27.5 models. Makes you wonder though, did they just not realize it could be better? I'm with you on wanting it lower. Get the longest post you can. I just put a OneUp 210 mm on my medium Big Honzo and I can't imagine going back to shorter again. Nice to have a long section of straight tube and a low seat tube height. Nice video as always!
Another great video - just a cracking channel! Well done.
Thanks Matthew. Party on!
What do you think would be a good wheelset for it? I was thinking about getting the vibracore wheels. I run the Bontrager Line Pro 30 carbon wheels but I notice a bit of harshness at high speed chunky descents.
Noticed the Big Al/Big Wig share similar geometry to the Rocky Mountain Growler. Would love your thoughts on how they compare since you've ridden both.
The trails look amazing, I don’t mind sharing the trails with hikers; just wish my local ones where more respectful of our little trail system. It’s a one direction loop (lot of drops with blind corners) with signs everywhere, they like to go the wrong way...
I would love to see your take on a some of the budget bikes, like the Vitus Sentier or the Nukeproof Scout. I recently got a Sentier and love it. I would like to see your opinion of how something like that compares to the many other hardtails you’ve ridden.
I've been trying to review both of those for years. The vitus has pretty dated geo (mainly the reach and stl), but I hear good things about it.
@@hardtailparty Awesome! I like my Vitus so far, but it’s my first “real” mountain bike, so I don’t have much for comparison. I have a 2021 Sentier VR here in Northern Phoenix, if you were looking for a review bike, in case Vitus wasn’t willing to send a bike to review.
@@derekconnolly what size is it? I might take you up on that, thanks!
@@hardtailparty It is a size large, the 27.5 variant. I haven’t modified anything, so it is stock according to the Vitus website for the VR version.
The Nukeproof ain’t exactly budget when you compare specs.
It almost seems like you can run it like an aggressive XC. A pair of high volume icons, chunky grips nice flats and ergon comp saddle.
Yeah, but I'd go with a big al if I wanted an aggressive xc. That extra 1.6lb is definitely noticeable.
Recently bought a Giant Fathom 1 29er (2021) and was hoping to see if you can get your hands on one of those for your review / opinion. I personally love it even more than the full suspension Trance 3 2021 29er I already have...
I've been trying to get one for review, but i can't get a response from giant.
@@hardtailparty BTW, love your channel. Keep up the great work you’re doing!
Looking at the race version of the big wig or the orbea laufy with a 150mm fork upgrade don’t know which one is better for messing about in the woods, bike parks , big jumps and tech trails
With all the extra traffic they're getting, Ragley should consider redoing their website. I almost lost interest browsing the bikes because it's so confusing. Separating their bikes by material and wheel size would be great. I had to hunt through their marketing to find out which bikes are 27.5.
We crashed their website with the traffic the first review brought. :)
@@hardtailparty yeah I was one of the people responsible for that haha. Ragley wasn't even on my radar until you made a video about them. It's a good time for hardtails.
Truly appreciate all your reviews! Thinking about purchasing a 2021 Niner Air 4 RDO. Some feedback if you've experienced!
Thats a super xc race bike doesn’t seem like it would be his jam.
@@ethancushing3398 Bought it!! WOW!!
Thanks!👊
Another great review Steve 👌 How does this compare to Cotic "s BFE Max? Interested to know your thoughts on the geo, ride and build quality comparisons as you are my go to guru! Keep up the great work and content. Stay safe pal 👍
I prefer my bigwig over the bfe max even though the bigwig is Heavier
Very interesting review! Ragley sounds like a no-brainer. Any chance you'll get your hands on a Marley soon?
You should see if you can get your hands on a Sonder Signal ST another UK designed 4130 chromoly steel frame... 25% cheaper as well... The signal sounds like a bike you would like because of the proportional chainstays as you go up/down sizes... supposed to be playful and a trail smasher... got a couple of mates who love it..... This is the best hardtail channel on UA-cam... great vids
I agreed it looks interesting. I've reached out to wonder a few times, but I wasn't able to convince them to send one for review. There are a few companies out there that still don't understand the value of UA-cam.
I can concur ,re the sonder signal st I brought a frame on a whim and built it up ..super stoked with it ..fast n agile with nice short chain stays 👊
These bikes look so sick
Really enjoying your content . I asked ragley if they might send you a Piglet and a Marley to review .
I was wondering how do the Ragley's (BIG AL and BIG WIG) compare to the Cotic Solarismax and the Cotic BFeMax?
Steve reviewed them all on his channel
@@jimbob8973 Yes I know, they all "scored" very good, but I would like to know which he would prefer of the 4 ...
I cant help but wonder if the heavy Enduro wheels and tyres used in this video made the bike feel a little slow?
I'm hoping to spec one of these frames with Hunt Trailwide wheels and maybe an Ardent/DHR II Tyre combo.
Awesome videos! 👍
I want one of these two bikes so bad! Only issue is where the heck do you get one in the states?
Great review! I'm planning to pick up a Big Al as soon as I see them in stock.
One thing I'm curious about - does moving the saddle up on the rails have the same effect on climbing as a steeper seat tube angle? Is your saddle already as far forward as it can go?
I've been waiting 😌, yay
Any chance on a Pipedream Sirius review? Would be awesome to see how you feel about Pipedream frames and in particular the lower stack height on that frame
It's one of the bikes I'm most interested in reviewing, but I haven't been able to get them to send me one.
My main concern with that bike is the loe stack height. But who knows, maybe it works really well.
@@hardtailparty Looks like you're getting one to review! Looking forward to it
Hi lovin the channel . Very good information on hardtail s. Great to see these bikes tested in the environment they are designed to be riden . Have you ever tested the ragley marley. I would be very interested in your thoughts on this bike . Many thanks Paul
Nice review! I'm currently on a 2020 Big Wig (XL) but was a bit intrigued by the RSD Middlechild CroMo from the Pinkbike article (the grass is always greener et.c.). The main points being shorter CS, longer reach and a bit higher stack. However, I am very happy with the BW and have about the same comments/thoughts as you (compliant, chill ride, but still surprisingly poppy even though long CS, livens up at speed).. so what would you say would be the pros and cons in handling vs the Middlechild? I like playfulness, so thinking it's be even easier to pop bunnies et.c.? A bit rougher ride perhaps? Do you know how short CS could be used w/ a 29" rear wheel (2.3-2.4" maxxis something) or have you ridden it 'only' in 27.5 setup?
..Unfortunately I don't think I can spend on the Ti-Middlechild, but if you could mention some pros and cons for that one as well vs the Big Wig that'd be awesome.
I swear they stole Canfield's design lolololol Looked like a super fun ride, always enjoy the video!
Oh, yes, great looking bike! I am very interested to hear your thoughts on the steel vs aluminum models! How close do they come with regards to vibration damping? Great work, Keep it up!
Me too!!
Which is better for bike packing steel big wig or aluminum big al?
Great vid. Been looking forward to it. Would it be fair to say its about like a more aggressive, more modern all-round trail bike than something like a Surly but also with better weight and ride quality than a Chromag? How would this do bikepacking?
4:33 Same :(
How do you find the size? I'm 6'2", 187cm (long torso and arms) and Ragley recommends the L but that looks small to me. I think the XL would be better? I note you wanted a cm longer reach
Ragleys run small. I'd recommend an XL
OK, so I gotta ask: Choosing one over the other (Big Al vs. Big Wig/Aluminum vs. Steel), which one would you go with? I'm torn between these two bikes and if the ride quality is pretty much equal, I'll save 1.5 lbs. and go with the Big Al.
Love all your videos. Please continue. Thanks!
Seems super quiet. Nice switch on the mic.
The new mic is almost too quiet. I had to add back in some bike noise. Otherwise it was awkward to watch.
Great review as always. Looking forward to the comparo one. First time that I saw that HP sticker on the frame. Are they going to be for sale soon? I didn't see it on your site.
I sell them via patreon. If you watch my first look vids, i usually show the sticker on those.
I am nearly identical to you in build, torso, reach and even lower body. I’m 5’6” and 28.5 inseam. I fit on most Medium frame 26” wheel set bikes from the 1999-2010 time period but have always been fitted to a small frame on ALL MTBs that are 29ers (with a 50mm - 60mm stem) and didn’t pull the trigger still being indecisive on frame size. So, sir, firstly, how is it that you are fitting on this Ragley Big AL medium frame build having my dimensions?
Do I need yo get my ears syringed or is that bike REALLY quiet? Another great review
Frame only purchase, Ragley Big Wig or Canfield Nimble 9? Your views on both seem really similar, all though I think you used the word "fun" more in the Nimble 9 review.
Great looking bike.
I'm thinking of setting one of these up with 27.5 wheels as it's the only frame I can get right now.
Do you think it would be too slacked out?
changing wheel size won't affect the head angle. The only thing it affects is the bottom bracket height, and the trail measurement (which will be fairly minimal).
@@hardtailparty appreciate you taking the time to reply. Keep up the great content.
I'm hoping you can get your hands on the new pipedream moxie
It's a little sad to hear about the paintjob chipping so easily because I had a MY15 BigWig and the paintjob was literally nukeproof. Ridiculously tough and really well applied.
It makes me wonder a little that their price here in germany still more than doubled since then anyway.
All bikes got more expensive, which comes down to Asian prices going up too (which affects raw materials and individual components as well as manufacturing). On top of that we have had Brexit, which probably put some fees onto the products as well, since Ragley is from the UK.
@@Dark__Thoughts
I think it´s great if people are actually being paid more for their work and I also understand that prices have risen a little through the Brexit.
My point however was, that the paint job apparently got worse even though the price has risen. Why am I not receiving the same quality from back then when I already pay more per unit? Isn´t this something to consider claiming?
@@dschingy I doubt the actual workers in those production lines will see a rise in payment from this.
I didn't commented on the paint, because that is hard to have an opinion on when it's all just subjective statements. Maybe it didn't change, maybe it was always chipping easily like that, or maybe it is just a harsher condition in Sedona, I don't know.
@@Dark__Thoughts
Well I have first hand experience on the previous paint jobs of Ragley and even though it is subjective as you say the comment on the paint chipping gives off a significantly different expectation to it.
Which tire insert is better? cushcore or rimpact?
What helmet are you wearing?
Are those Hunt wheels 35mm IW? If so, how do you like the shape of those Terravail tires?
Great review as always.
32.5 they're ok at this width, it 35i would be even better.
@@hardtailparty thanks Steve. I have “We Are One, Converts” on the way which are 35mm internal and I’m deciding on tire choices...those Terravails look interesting. I suggested they reach out to you BTW - they are doing some good work.
Thanks for contacting them. They've reached out to me because of your suggestion. Thank you. Hopefully we see some of their products on the channel soon. I've heard great things about them. The terravails sure look nice with those tanwalls, They ride a lot like a DHF. I don't love them in the back, but up front they're nice. I may even prefer them slightly over a DHF (but not over an assegai or dissector or spec eliminator).
Great to hear!
After watching a lot of your older videos compared to your new ones I see that you mostly wear handup instead of tasco. Which do you prefer and why? I can’t find the video you mention the differences. Thanks for making so much content.
Bro, with the shortage of bikes. My lbs has mondrakers coming! Never thought I'd see that in Michigan usa. Only carbon frames they could get I guess
How do you think a race version will ride with a 160 mm lyric
Even more sluggish on climbs and flat sections, and even more smashy on the downhills. I don't like 160mm forks on hardtails unless you're doing a lot of hucks.
Whats the travel of the fork Steve?
