Mystery surrounds mass fish die-off in Germany's Oder River | DW News

- Environmental groups in Germany are calling it an ecological disaster. Thousands of fish have washed up dead along the Oder River, which runs along Germany's eastern border and then flows into Poland. Lifeless and sick fish have been present in the Oder since the end of July, over a distance of several hundred kilometers. Officials think it's likely they have been poisoned.

Chemicals that cause problems with fish are often impossible to distinguish from the natural bio-matter in the river without a specific test for each particular molecule, which makes monitoring for industrial pollution from plastic industries extremely hard.

It's just the catchment refilling after a dry spell.
Happens all the time here in Australia during or after summer.
The entire river is riddled with dams, canals etc that get closed off as the water level drops.
The water that remains trapped by infrastructure deoxygenates and sits stagnant until the next lot of rains arrive.
Because the catchment doesn't refill uniformly, that deoxygenated water is gradually released along the entire length of the river in massive clouds that travel downstream suffocating anything that gets caught in them for too long which is to say most things.

Chemical plants were relocated to the upper reaches of the Oder during World War Two. Test the water, make autopsies on them fish, these fish autopsies may prove crucial as some chemicals won't be directly detectable due to breaking down or otherwise decaying resulting in only being indirectly detectable by their side effects on the fishes bodies.

As a former resident of Poland it's embarassing that a disaster of this magnitude has been covered up by Polish authorities. The incompetence and corruption of the old communist ways is alive and well today. They should be punished severely.
How utterly depressing! 😢
How very sad!
The shallower the water, the warmer the water resulting in what you see.
The cause of this is greed and ignorance.
A low amount of water by drought and high temperatures in summer causes a lack of oxygen in the water. Fishes could be dying because of oxygen deficiency.
what you described had happened in the past and it was taken into consideration, however such case is far less severe than what happened here. The fish found in the water had burned gills. IT is most likely low level of water + contamination increase. water ph is similar to the one in a soap.
Australia has had fish kills in droughts when the water gets low and hot. The obsession to clear willows that shaded the water does not help, no shelters at the edges. Shocked about the tyres. The old horse and cart didn’t do that. Places on UA-cam like Azerbaijan rural areas are so much cleaner.
By now, dead birds and bievers have been found. So no, propably not drout-releated.
But that wouldn't explain dead beavers and dogs, if that info is correct. Would it?
In this case you had an overabundance of oxygen detected.
This is simply another example that industry and agriculture do not pay the full price/cost of their actions. We treat the rivers like drains expecting nature to foot the bill. In a normal year nature dilutes all these chemicals to safer levels with rainfall and run-off.
This year is not a normal year. Rainfall and run--off are reduced so therefore dilution is reduced; if the level of pollution remains the same then the concentration of toxic chemicals increases to crisis levels. This is not rocket science this is greed and financial self interest. What else do expect?
Humans beings are living above their means, this can only go on for so long.
Personally, I totally expect Humans are an endangered species on Earth. Climate has changed, and Humans just keep ignoring Science and are getting sicker every day.
@@Diana1000Smiles 300 years ago when natures infrastructure was still in place, if mankind with the technology we have now was very very careful it might have been possible for the planet to support roughly 1 billion people sustainably for millennia.
