  • Burke Shelley Tribute - Bassist and Vocalist from Budgie
Here is my Tribute to Burke Shelley the bass player and vocalist for Rock Legends Budgie.
This tribute is for fans who loved the band and for new rock fans who are perhaps just discovering Budgie or want to know more about them.
Budgie were far more than a rock band, they were actually very funky in places, had the best song titles in rock and should have been a lot bigger than they were.
Today I am going to play Breadfan, Parents and Zoom Club - what would you play?

First saw budgie supporting gillan must be early 80s and I was hooked straight away. Saw them about a dozen times live over the years. Play their albums all the time. Miss Burke everyday what a musician.

An amazing Band… my brother in law Brian Goddard was one of the founder members of Budgie, married for a few years to my sister… I last saw John Burke Shelley about 5/6 years ago… He came from my hometown. of Llanishen, Cardiff….I was actually in school with his sister Yvonne …. I last saw Burke around 5 years ago in a local pub, and by then he couldn’t sing, due the health problems… What a wonderful humble man x

Seeing all these comments makes me realise how loved the band were and still are. I hope it offers a little comfort to the family at this difficult time. Take care - Phil

so sorry regarding the anniversary of your Mother's passing. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your WONDERFUL tribute to Burke and the band Budgie and i'm sure, if his family access this video, they will appreciate your kind words. . It was a little sad to read that Burke made more money from Metallica's version of Breadfan than he did from the whole of the band's catalogue... apparently. Also a special mention for Tony Bourge who, for me, was critical to the band's uniqueness which, after he departed, the band lost a little. His variety of tones and styles were critical to the band. Anyway i've still retained all 27 concert tickets i attended and will treasure those memories as Budgie have always been in my top 3 bands alongside Mahogany Rush and Ozric Tentacles. I have ordered Budgie's 2nd album Squawk on 180g picture disc but Bandolier remains my all time favourite album. Many thanks again Phil and for all your other wonderful videos.

Thank You, Phil. I was into Budgie back in the 70's, drifted away, and started flirting with the idea of revisiting their music for about 4 years until finally picking up the MCA box last year, with no regrets, and glad I did. Now I have watched your wonderful tribute to Burke just today, and you focused on all the areas I've thought about concerning their actual impact on the music we love. They are certainly in my Rock N' Roll Hall.

Another rock legend gone way too soon, I have loved Budgie since the early 1970’s, have everything they ever released on vinyl and cd, including the German cd box set of the first 5 albums with poster, their EP signed by all band members, live bootlegs on vinyl, cd’s of Six Ton
Budgie and other pre Budgie stuff…only vinyl I’m missing now is the four albums issued on picture disc which I do intend to purchase….their music was simply amazing….RIP Burke, you will never be forgotten…..from a life long fan in Canada…

This is a wonderful tribute Phil to Burke Shelley and the legends that were Budgie. If the Shelley family happen across this heartfelt and emotive video they will take some comfort knowing that their father was loved and respected and will be missed by all of us everywhere and across the generations in the Rock & Metal community.
Your fine words have made me feel part of that world long gone for a brief moment. Thanks for that Phil.
My memory is a little musty these days but I was in high school as the NWOBHM began. The very High School in the area Burke Shelley lived and Rock & Metal was a big part of that school at the time. School bags were all inked and patched with the usual list of the great band logos. AC/DC, Purple, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Priest, Nazareth, Rush, Quo, UFO, and Scorpions.....alongside the new kids on the block; Gillan, Rainbow, Ozzy, Motörhead, Maiden, Leppard, Saxon, Girlschool, Angel Witch, Diamond Head, Samson, Tygers et al. The list could go on for many more great bands and Budgie were always there graffitied proudly with them all. They were held in high regard in my school.
I feel very nostalgic now, I miss those days Phil. Atleast we can still play and hear the music which is still a huge part of who I am.

Hi Robert, thank you for watching and your very kind words. Perhaps it is my age, but I feel music, including the albums, concerts, memories etc connects us to other likeminded people around the world even if we have never met them in person. I do hope what I do here is seen as a community for music fans. I live in Cornwall in the UK and felt I was the only person listening to this music and still buying physical albums. So I started Now Spinning so I could share the stories in my head! I have since found out there are lots of people around the world who feel the same. For people in the know Budgie were an absolutely top draw rock band and one of the few bands you never get tired of listening to. Their recorded music is fantastic but to see them live and to watch Burke Shelley in full flow was something else. I was lucky enough to see them a number of time between 1974 and 2009 and Burke always gave 100 per cent and will never be forgotten .

Some of us saw him live but all of us shared one thing, his music formed part of the soundtrack to our lives. Your Dads voice, the fantastic songs he composed and recorded with Budgie have been with us from when we were at school, got our first jobs, started families, went through good time and bad times. Every time I play a Budgie album I am transported back to various times in my life. The music is timeless. The impact you Dad had on the development of rock music is immense. I personally feel his influence will continue to grow. Take it easy and take one day at a time. let the grief do what it wants ( there are no time limits) and be there for each other. Thank you Phil for a great tribute and very sad to hear the news about your Dad Nathaniel. Budgie were a very important part of what I listened to in my teenage years and beyond. Although I was a bit too young to see them live at their peak I saw them several times in the late 80's and beyond. Seeing them play a packed and very sweaty Dolly in Oxford around '86-87 was a seminal moment for me and probably still my favourite ever gig. I had the pleasure of talking to your Dad at a Budgie convention in Cardiff probably around 20 years ago and was struck by what a wonderful humble man he was with a very deep faith. Much respect.

I had the pleasure of seeing Budgie quite a few times in the mid 70's. I have all their vinyl from that era. Bandolier remains my favourite and is ground breaking for its time. I think the reason Budgie never went 'mainstream' like their contemporaries was they didn't have any schtick. They were just about the music. And during that period bands that embraced a cultural movement or had some kind of entertaining McGuffin, or co-opted some literary or historical zeitgeist were the ones who made the greatest strides. Black Sabbath had their horror movie schtick, Led Zeppelin had their lord of the rings schtick, the Who had their Mod schtick, Uriah Heep had their goblins schtick, Judas Priest had their village people schtick, Van Halen had their Dave Lee Roth schtick and AC/DC had their schoolboy schtick and so on and so on. And there was Budgie with 'just' the music, which is a shame because they deserved so much more recognition. So thank you Burke for the music and the great gigs. RIP buddy.

Hi, thank you for watching and your very interesting comment. I agree with you. I think we see the present age as where image and marketing through video is how bands make their mark. But as you say all the big bands back then also had another dimension that went beyond the music. Budgie did have a cool logo, a budgie wearing a space suit and some really cool song titles so perhaps they could have built on this? Non of this matters now, what we have is the music which is timeless. Take care - Phil :)

Budgie was one of the most underrated band ever! I first heard them in the 70s, while living behind the Iron Curtain, and was simply amazed by their melody, sound, and voice. I think it is extremely unfair to call them the founders of heavy metal and put them on a par with Metallica or Iron Maiden. Because compared to them, the Budgie are at an unattainable peak! R.I.P. Burke.

The music has been there when we were young, as we went through life events and followed us as we have got older. The music reminds us of our journey and acts almost like a diary entry. Even if we did not meet them we feel they are part of us and It does hurt when they pass. It reminds us of our own mortality and that life is short. I think I am going to play Bandolier again after typing that! Phil

Such a heartfelt tribute to a truly amazing and well-underrated band. Shelly was one hell of a bass player and songwriter. I love the first 5 albums by this band though Never Turn Your Back On A Friend has always been my personal ultimate favourite album of theirs. "Parents" is my favourite track on that album too but I love every track on it and it was such a very well-recorded album. I would even compare their cover of Baby Please Don't Go" up there with how well Hendrix did "All Along The Watchtower". Had all these albums on vinyl years ago and seeing this box set with the 3 albums made me pop right over to Amazon and order it.

Hi Phil A late reply but I was a bit late to the party of Budgie as well and I also saw them for the first time at the Birmingham odeon touring their Power Supply Album. They were supporting the Ian Gillan Band when they had the new guitarist after Bernie Torme ( another great guitarist). To be honest Budgie wiped the floor with Gillan's band who were slightly under par with this new guitarist, I forget his name now. I was sitting behind this couple who were both longhairs and also were also slightly more on the higher weight scale when I plucked the courage to tap one of them on the back to enquire about this 'Budgie' band. I had unintentionally disturbed the male partner who supported a beard almost as long as his head hair whom I quizzed about the so called "Birdie Band'. He was very quick to inform me that they were here solely for the fact that Budgie were performing and that the Gillan bit was just an extra. I was totally convinced when I left the concert hall in Central Birmingham being invaded by some strange alien fog that had fallen over the midlands at the time and to make matters even more disconcerting my ears were still ringing from being totally destroyed by Budgie's Panzer Division. TO this day one of the few great memories of Concert going back in the late 70s and 80s. Keep up the great work Phil as I share a lot of commonality with the groups you dedicate your site to. Since then I think I had seen Budgie a further 4 times at slightly more smaller venues. Yes they should have been bigger.

Hi Phil, I only want to add like so many comments have said, a truly super tribute ! I have been into Budgie since 1975 when a friend played me Breadfan and I have enjoyed their music ever since, I remember with great fondness buying gradually their first 6 albums, I think a play of their other 5 is now in order. Only this morning received 3 CDs of the best of Budgie, one that will be permanently in my Mini Cooper & one to each of my children to introduce them to a class hard rock band. I have also ordered the MCA box set which will also be in the Mini. In time I really hope his children search through the tributes about their father and come across yours , as I feel sure it will bring them immense pride.

Hi Kim, thank you for watching and your kind words. I really wanted to create a video that informed people who may not know Budgie or Burke Shelley to how important they were and at the same time think about Burke Shelley the father, husband and family member. I t would be very easy to get this wrong as I only know him through the music and what it has meant to me since the early 1970s. I am so pleased you enjoyed it and your Mini Cooper is now full of Budgie CDs - Phil :)

Thanks again for a heartfelt video and tribute. Breadfan was a staple at the Hungry Years rock disco in Brighton, in the 70's. Just missed seeing them in Crawley in 73? as their van broke down and they never made it. Always underrated I thought.

Late to this Party but as always. RIP. Glad the music will always remain as our heroes are falling rapidly😢. Shelley and Budgie were a well kept secret but those in the know appreciate his contributions to what would become hard rock/metal. They really did influence lots of NWOBHM bands for sure. Which in turn birthed Metallica. I band I don’t really care for anymore but they deserve credit for bringing up the awareness of the small wonders of Budgie.

A lovely heart-felt tribute, Phil. The passing of Burke is a huge loss to the world of music. He was a brilliant and original musician, such a unique singer, songwriter and bass guitarist in a band who were vastly underrated but very influencial to a lot of musicians later. I bought 'In For The Kill' on cassette in 1976, a brilliant album, and I also have the 3 CD box set, extremely good value for money, and I too urge anybody who has not heard Budgie to buy this brilliant box set. R.I.P. Burke Shelley, the legend 🎸🎶
