I have lived in Thailand for 10 years, and the response to the pandemic throughout January and most of February was dreadful. After the 1st case was announced within Thailand on the 14th of January, the borders were left open to China and specifically Wuhan for 10 weeks. Most other SE Asian countries closed their borders, schools and social events, while Thailand clung onto tourist revenue from Mainland China. Luckily, the infections did not spiral out of control for whatever reason, but the reason was not preventive measures as there were none in place.
So happy to see your presentation today Dr. John! There is so much going on everywhere. As a photographer, I see groups and gatherings several times a week. I wear my mask as required. However, not a single gathering has significant numbers of attendees with masks on, they simply ignore the requirement as a "suggestion" they will not comply with. Many simply say the numbers are false and misleading, that true COVID deaths are very few and that underlying conditions are the real killers in this pandemic. I think we're in trouble in the U.S. in the coming months. Thank YOU for being a continued voice of reason among screams about fakery. For example, in the UK, in August, about 10 times more people died due to INFLUENZA and pneumonia (ONS data). Therefore, why witch-hunting coronavirus and shutting eyes on TEN fold more dangerous cause of deaths? What is more, if someone was both tested positive for pneumonia and Covid-19, the cause of death is registered as Covid-19. This is some big manipulation! In August only about 1% of deaths in the UK were attributed to Covid-19, despite the skewed registration criteria! . Panic and lockdowns are likely to cause more deaths than Sars-Cov-2.

Can we establish yes its definitely the covid 19 virus or are we detecting parts of something that could be the result of many differing perspectives here? Do we have a gold standard to say yes it is 100% covid or could any number of viruses make the body put out these rna markers we are detecting? How are we singling out covid from other possibilitys?
Regarding the argument regarding masks I saw the Scottish Health spokesperson discussing this with someone who was arguing that there was very little evidence that masks were beneficial. She told him "I don't recall seeing randomised controlled trials on parachutes" excellent response.

Maybe someone could start his/her own channel where JC'S pandemic students (often feel like his student!) can discuss the information he provides in a more respectful, relaxed environment? He's become a bit of a "guru" to us during this pandemic, hasn't he? TBH, looking at his podcasts from the very beginning has kept me calmer and much more well-informed than I'd ever have been trying to access relevant info on my own. So grateful for all his hard work. Was able to prepare self and family members in other countries too, before the SHTF, because of his vids. Good man. Dear John, Ayuso is absolutly mad . She has been doing stupid things since the begining . Spain in general and Madrid specially have had and awfull sistem to follow the contacts . After the lockdown the reopening was too fast and deorganaized . We have 17 health systems decoordinated, and politicians incapable of make a minimal effort to get together and push forward in the same direction. Very dissapointing after the exemplar actitud of spanish population in the lockdown. Probably the most rigorous in Europe. Congratulations for your videos. I remember first finding your channel to read some western perspective on masking etc. and i remember most western advice (US, EU) be it the UK scientific adviser, the EU's medical establishment, US surgeon general, even tony fauci, sanjay gupta etc were all wrong with masking. and the nature of droplet/aerosol transmission,, targeted travel bans, and lockdowns. Only the koreans, hks, taiwanese, and thais had rules suggesting or mandating universal masking back then. and as someone who lives in japan masking was the norm. so no rules were enacted until recently.. 3 things that most people watching asian news assumed/inferred last jan to feb was this. 1 the chinese tourist in Singapore that passed the virus to a souvenir sales person, ment brief contact can spread it. underscoring droplets are important. 2 Diamond Princess in Yokohama, ment this was really contagious and prolly not just large droplet transmitted as its highly unlikely that people were spitting droplets with that amount of people. perhaps enclosed space with dancing and singing and talking is the norm in cruise ships. so thats another clue. also it ment some people didnt have to look sick to pass the virus. 3 the hospital in Daegu that had all but 2 patients infected. ment some hosp staff/visitors were passing it.. noting also that most this happening were indoors. not alot of people outside of their respective countries talked about this back then. so i would understand most westerners wouldnt have known but the CDC etc shouldve known. these were signs from the high quality of contact tracing japan, korea, hk and singapore had, adviced shouldve adjusted by then. the only thing that makes sense in retrospect is they were cavalier about the advice of saying masking is not recommended and dangerous in order to save the masks for the med staff. this advice is a lie at worst or a necessary misstatement at best. this ultimately jeopardized their credibility and the validity of their current advice to the more skeptical bunch in the EU and US. the asian advice was mixed back then but it was tilted towards universal masking, physical distance, and hand washing.. most asian policy back then was "masking works and even if the benefit was marginal it was better to err on the side of caution. but we need to ration and prioritize hospitals so we will give away only a few, and you cannot hoard etc." by late feb to early march it became definite to me that the advice was correct when the med advisers from HK said flu season of winter 2020 in hk is virtually gone cause of the minimum health guidelines which had masking, handwashing, etc.. this was important as TW and HK are the most plugged in places to China in the world followed by Tokyo Seoul and Bangkok. after reading camus' the plague i realize one lesson from it, lying taints everything in a wide crisis like this. so during the pandemic, its best to be completely honest with what you dont know and what you do. and trust that more people will follow and understand ur honesty.. it seems like this will still be a long fight with the virus, atleast 6-18 more months till we could somewhat return to our economic past via vacc or natural infection. i pray for R0 to drop some more and for our scientists to be more cooperative and tilt advice on the side of caution to prevent unnecessary deaths, the economy will bounce back. it has changed forever but it will bounce back. we are still here, we can pull together. but we need to stop this virus first, or at the very least drag it to manageable numbers for our hosps. finally, WHO is not a fully independent institution it's engulfed in politics. and it has lost all credibility in the prevention aspect of the containment of SARS-CoV-2. hopefully, they dont screw the vaccine, medical treatment aspect of this. keep it up dr campbell! The facts and insights that he gave helped me form my own conclusions and mentality towards this disease which I also shared to my family and friends. I always knew they were wrong on the masks. The problem was there were no masks to buy because our own corporations have sold us out and stopped manufacturing in our country, and we couldn’t get our hands on enough masks for everyone. Instead of ramping up manufacturing of masks they were busy ramping up manufacturing ventilators. Once enterprising people started making their own masks and posting how-to videos on the internet suddenly masking was fine and a good idea according to the CDC.

Last Monday it was a Bank holiday in the UK. I was walking home through the town centre. I passed two bars within 100 yards of each other. Both were rammed with people. No social distancing. Doors closed, no ventilation. The next day I had to get two taxi's. Both told me I didn't need to wear a mask. I still did though. I see complacency as our biggest hurdle this coming winter.

Surprised about the taxi - you can't get in an Uber in London without a mask,they want a photo of you wearing one when you book as well. Mini cab drivers don't insist on it, but prefer customers to wear masks, and I always do anyway, as well as opening the windows when I get in the cab if they're closed.

Seen the local kids back at school today, all stood really close to each other without masks and the teacher really nearby! I texted someone to find out what the official stance was, and they said that the whole year of kids in that school are in a bubble.... Took my kid to primary school today, I didn't want to, but I did. The school has done what it can but it can't do alot really, you can see it isn't viable and certainly is no where near anything close to being called "covid secure". Its theatre and a play at trying to offer an impression of protection, "bubbles" are purely a word to reassure parents, all "bubbles" are compromised at so many points they are non existent. My experience today, the mums all stood close in large groups chatting and catching up, often at choke points in the school. Dad's attempted 2 metres but physically couldnt... Just my experience and I have no opinion on it.

A Supercomputer Analyzed COVID-19, and an Interesting New Hypothesis Has Emerged! Earlier this summer, the Summit supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee set about crunching data on more than 40,000 genes from 17,000 genetic samples in an effort to better understand Covid-19. Summit is the second-fastest computer in the world, but the process -- which involved analyzing 2.5 billion genetic combinations -- still took more than a week. When Summit was done, researchers analyzed the results. It was, in the words of Dr. Daniel Jacobson, lead researcher and chief scientist for computational systems biology at Oak Ridge, a 'eureka moment.' The computer had revealed a new theory about how Covid-19 impacts the body: the bradykinin hypothesis. The hypothesis provides a model that explains many aspects of Covid-19, including some of its most bizarre symptoms. It also suggests 10-plus potential treatments, many of which are already FDA approved. Jacobson's group published their results in a paper in the journal eLife in early July. According to the team's findings, a Covid-19 infection generally begins when the virus enters the body through ACE2 receptors in the nose, (The receptors, which the virus is known to target, are abundant there.) The virus then proceeds through the body, entering cells in other places where ACE2 is also present: the intestines, kidneys, and heart. This likely accounts for at least some of the disease's cardiac and GI symptoms. But once Covid-19 has established itself in the body, things start to get really interesting. According to Jacobson's group, the data Summit analyzed shows that Covid-19 isn't content to simply infect cells that already express lots of ACE2 receptors. Instead, it actively hijacks the body's own systems, tricking it into upregulating ACE2 receptors in places where they're usually expressed at low or medium levels, including the lungs. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) controls many aspects of the circulatory system, including the body's levels of a chemical called bradykinin, which normally helps to regulate blood pressure. According to the team's analysis, when the virus tweaks the RAS, it causes the body's mechanisms for regulating bradykinin to go haywire. Bradykinin receptors are resensitized, and the body also stops effectively breaking down bradykinin. (ACE normally degrades bradykinin, but when the virus downregulates it, it can't do this as effectively.) The end result, the researchers say, is to release a bradykinin storm -- a massive, runaway buildup of bradykinin in the body. According to the bradykinin hypothesis, it's this storm that is ultimately responsible for many of Covid-19's deadly effects. Several drugs target aspects of the RAS and are already FDA approved, including danazol, stanozolol, and ecallantide, which reduce bradykinin production and could potentially stop a deadly bradykinin storm. Interestingly, the researchers suggest vitamin D as a potentially useful Covid-19 drug. "The vitamin is involved in the RAS system and could prove helpful by reducing levels of another compound, known as REN," the report says. "Again, this could stop potentially deadly bradykinin storms from forming." Always enjoy the presentations doc, but I have to ask you the question - who will elect to receive a vaccine that has been incredibly rushed in development and, at least in the US, is subject to political pressure and possible premature FDA approval from an anti-science administration trying to get re-elected? Having a vaccine is great in principle, however I don't imagine enough people will take it to achieve herd immunity. I'm not anti-vax, in fact I get my flu shot every year... but there is no way I'll get anywhere near a Covid vaccine until it has proved out for at least a couple of years in terms of efficacy, side effects and long term safety. Please keep politics out of this. If a vaccine proves effective every country is going to release it, not limited to the US. It is everyone's choice to get it or not. All of the vaccines are being rushed not just US. Normally it would take years. I can guarantee that by year end several vaccines will be available worldwide. There will be many who choose to wait but also many in high risk groups will choose to get it. Politics took HCQ off the table with lies and how many lives were lost because of this. Enough already.

We talk a lot about treatments lowering the death rate. However I can find little information on treatments minimizing the effects of Covid. While I, and my family, are very concerned about the death rate, I am equally concerned about the long term effects. Has Dexamethalone, or other treatments also reduced the longer term effects. In short has the overall risk reduced since treatments have been found, or has only the risk of death reduced?
9 months is a short time to assess anything. You need longitudinal studies to draw sound evidence and conclusions, and those take years. In fact, until a major shift in the game happens like a viable vaccine, you won't get those studies started as resources are tied up in fighting the acute cases.
Baking soda, aspirin, zinc sulfate, vitamin C, and quercetin have all come up as "not a bad idea" to take... I've read about them during this virus. Please do your own research.

At the moment Im very concerned about care home policies...the government need to do something to help families see their elderly loved ones in care homes. Many people pay 1000 of pounds per month for their care and they haven't seen their family since March. There must be a way of rapid testing relatives, to facilitate visits to these little people, bless them....

In Northampton, they identified the increase in cases as being from the *Sandwich Factory*. So they asked those employees and their households to self-isolate. The spread was blamed on car sharing, house-sharing, and socialising outside of work. 300 people tested positive, so that's one hell of a big house, car, and social event they all share! The common denominator is the place where they all work. So let's hope there are some changes inside the factory - you know the place where cold food is prepared and shipped around the country. I feel bad that their sick pay is a reduced rate from their hourly pay. If they're now in forced isolation, they should get their full hourly rate, not the sick pay rate. (£90 a week btw) When the whole house-hold all work there it's not easy to live on the lesser amount.
Buildings where food is made has to follow some regs don't they regarding room temps and air circulation, that and the kind of workers the place attracts that are low earners and share transport and live in large groups to save on cost
Be grateful to have food and a live in country with good health care. Go back to the facts at the beginning the R rate and so forth. Greencore in Moulton Park Ind Estate. I live a couple of miles away. The army had a mobile test centre over the road on the day it made the news, which impressed me. The majority of the staff are from eastern europe and all live in the same area of Northampton. Not sure if there have been any fatalities though as it is becoming obvious that people of Slavic origin do better than people of Anglo Saxon origin with the virus. It's a chilled food preparation facility and it should have shut down earlier than it did but they probably didn't want to jeopardise their contract with M&S preparing sandwiches.

There are a few cases where the person tested and was reinfected with a worse case months later. One in California who went to a protest after having it early on in March.

Spain. Look at hospital admissions per week in the over 60-years-old: Aug 6th-12th: 639 Aug 13th-19th: 882 Aug 20th-26th: 1,102 The past week was on pace for 1,600. Hospital admissions have nearly trebled in elderly people since early August.
In the Netherlands there were less admissions for months due to the Covid19 fear. Also we had under-mortality for months after the first 'peak'. Maybe the same happened in Spain.

I went a “season opener” middle school football game tonight as provider of EMS. I was told all on or near the field had to social distance & wear masks. Of the 1000ppl present, I estimate @best, 1 in 50 wore a mask. Players spectators coaches all huddled in groups; hundreds of masks littered the sideline ground. Very little if any, acknowledgement of a pandemic, all the while cases rising locally due to state university openings. I am a minority in my thinking here in NE Georgia. Nobody wants to hear about the virus or that ppl ought to be accountable. It’s horrendous to witness. Feels like I’m stuck in a Twilight Zone episode.
I think that if we've learned anything in this it is that the only difference between an armchair expert and a professional expert is that the latter has a vested interest. While MRNA vaccines are ahead in the phase 2/3 testing, they have a major hurdle to overcome in any considered rollout. They need to be stored at -94F. Very few places have the ability to store vaccine at that temperature. Moderna states theirs is only needed to be at -4F but of course their tiger levels are not near what the Novavax vaccine has shown in their article in NEJM. Novavax is the vaccine with the best data and better production capabilities.
Dr. Campbell, can someone be shedding virus particles 4 months after initial illness? I know someone who got sick 4 months before and tested positive for Covid. Now is sick again and got a positive test again. How many of these people can actually be counted unless they are in a research hospital? Most people just get tested and forgotten. Dear Doc John, i wanted to book a covid19 test (london) as i have symptoms and i have been offered to walk 7miles to go 7 miles to get bck home (nearest test centre) as they told me not to get a cab. and no public transport! I don't drive... It takes 2 hr and a 30 mins to walk there and 2hrs. and a 30 mins to got back home and its raining! UK gov is great - they are tackling with this pandemic perfect !!! If i cycle, it will take me 50 mins but i don't have that kind of energy to cycle as i have terrible cough, headache and fatigue ! Especially with london traffic, i wouldn't dare to cycle on these crazy packed/polluted roads!

I'd be a little cautious of numbers from Thailand. I'm not sure if this is still the case, but as of ~10 years ago their position was that there was no malaria in Bangkok, and they wouldn't test you for it unless you told them you'd been somewhere else recently. I know of people who had to lie and say they'd been to a rural area in order to get tested and diagnosed with malaria.

Please do additional research on the story of Nancy Pelosi in the hair salon without a mask before bashing her on your UA-cam channel. She issued a statement, and so did her hair stylist, that she was specifically invited by the owner of the salon and that they were providing service to only one client at a time, being closed to everyone else. Her mask was off briefly to wash the back of her hair, then she was directed to walk from the shampoo area back to the styling station. In the meantime someone snapped her picture and sold it to her political opponents. This was a set up for political reasons to try to embarrass her. Nancy Pelosi is the Speaker of the House of Representatives, in other words, the leader of one of USA's two houses of Congress. She belongs to the opposite political party from the US President and is unfortunately a frequent target of political bashing by the US President, who is a known bully, as well as his supporters. If you do some more research into this story, I think you will find there is much more to it than what you have repeated on your video.

As such, she is expected to know better than anyone what the public health instructions are, and she's expected to follow them to the letter in order to lead by example. So to compare your daily covid death report, multiply your population by 0.008 then divide by 365. You'll find that covid deaths are a small fraction of daily natural deaths.
Houston Texas medical system just increased their warning level on covid cases. The beds are filling up but not fully yet. Similar situation here in central Florida too! (Opened 3 weeks ago, no cases, thankfully!) The school I have the most inside info on has a thermal camera at the main door - every child screened, everyday.

Overall it seems everyone has a very strong sense of community and kindness towards each other and are isolating if they have any concern. It's not a perfect system - is any?

I have lived in Thailand for 10 years, and the response to the pandemic throughout January and most of February was dreadful. After the 1st case was announced within Thailand on the 14th of January, the borders were left open to China and specifically Wuhan for 10 weeks. Most other SE Asian countries closed their borders, schools and social events, while Thailand clung onto tourist revenue from Mainland China. Luckily, the infections did not spiral out of control for whatever reason, but the reason was not preventive measures as there were none in place.
So happy to see your presentation today Dr. John! There is so much going on everywhere. As a photographer, I see groups and gatherings several times a week. I wear my mask as required. However, not a single gathering has significant numbers of attendees with masks on, they simply ignore the requirement as a "suggestion" they will not comply with. Many simply say the numbers are false and misleading, that true COVID deaths are very few and that underlying conditions are the real killers in this pandemic. I think we're in trouble in the U.S. in the coming months. Thank YOU for being a continued voice of reason among screams about fakery. What is more, if someone was both tested positive for pneumonia and Covid-19, the cause of death is registered as Covid-19. This is some big manipulation!

Can we establish yes its definitely the covid 19 virus or are we detecting parts of something that could be the result of many differing perspectives here? Do we have a gold standard to say yes it is 100% covid or could any number of viruses make the body put out these rna markers we are detecting? How are we singling out covid from other possibilitys?
Regarding the argument regarding masks I saw the Scottish Health spokesperson discussing this with someone who was arguing that there was very little evidence that masks were beneficial. She told him "I don't recall seeing randomised controlled trials on parachutes" excellent response.

He's become a bit of a "guru" to us during this pandemic, hasn't he? Dear John, Ayuso is absolutly mad . She has been doing stupid things since the begining . Spain in general and Madrid specially have had and awfull sistem to follow the contacts . After the lockdown the reopening was too fast and deorganaized . We have 17 health systems
decoordinated, and politicians incapable of make a minimal effort to get together and push forward in the same direction. I remember first finding your channel to read some western perspective on masking etc. and i remember most western advice (US, EU) be it the UK scientific adviser, the EU's medical establishment, US surgeon general, even tony fauci, sanjay gupta etc were all wrong with masking. and the nature of droplet/aerosol transmission,, targeted travel bans, and lockdowns. Only the koreans, hks, taiwanese, and thais had rules suggesting or mandating universal masking back then. and as someone who lives in japan masking was the norm. so no rules were enacted until recently.. 3 things that most people watching asian news assumed/inferred last jan to feb was this.
1 the chinese tourist in Singapore that passed the virus to a souvenir sales person, ment brief contact can spread it. underscoring droplets are important.
2 Diamond Princess in Yokohama, ment this was really contagious and prolly not just large droplet transmitted as its highly unlikely that people were spitting droplets with that amount of people. perhaps enclosed space with dancing and singing and talking is the norm in cruise ships. so thats another clue. also it ment some people didnt have to look sick to pass the virus.
3 the hospital in Daegu that had all but 2 patients infected. ment some hosp staff/visitors were passing it.. noting also that most this happening were indoors.
not alot of people outside of their respective countries talked about this back then. so i would understand most westerners wouldnt have known but the CDC etc shouldve known. these were signs from the high quality of contact tracing japan, korea, hk and singapore had, adviced shouldve adjusted by then. the only thing that makes sense in retrospect is they were cavalier about the advice of saying masking is not recommended and dangerous in order to save the masks for the med staff. this advice is a lie at worst or a necessary misstatement at best. this ultimately jeopardized their credibility and the validity of their current advice to the more skeptical bunch in the EU and US. the asian advice was mixed back then but it was tilted towards universal masking, physical distance, and hand washing.. most asian policy back then was "masking works and even if the benefit was marginal it was better to err on the side of caution. but we need to ration and prioritize hospitals so we will give away only a few, and you cannot hoard etc." by late feb to early march it became definite to me that the advice was correct when the med advisers from HK said flu season of winter 2020 in hk is virtually gone cause of the minimum health guidelines which had masking, handwashing, etc.. this was important as TW and HK are the most plugged in places to China in the world followed by Tokyo Seoul and Bangkok.
after reading camus' the plague i realize one lesson from it, lying taints everything in a wide crisis like this. so during the pandemic, its best to be completely honest with what you dont know and what you do. and trust that more people will follow and understand ur honesty.. it seems like this will still be a long fight with the virus, atleast 6-18 more months till we could somewhat return to our economic past via vacc or natural infection. i pray for R0 to drop some more and for our scientists to be more cooperative and tilt advice on the side of caution to prevent unnecessary deaths, the economy will bounce back. it has changed forever but it will bounce back. we are still here, we can pull together. but we need to stop this virus first, or at the very least drag it to manageable numbers for our hosps.
finally, WHO is not a fully independent institution it's engulfed in politics. and it has lost all credibility in the prevention aspect of the containment of SARS-CoV-2. hopefully, they dont screw the vaccine, medical treatment aspect of this.

On point! This is also the reason why I continuously follow him since the begining of the pandemic. Every peice of info as time pass by fits and makes sense. The facts and insights that he gave helped me form my own conclusions and mentality towards this disease which I also shared to my family and friends. I always knew they were wrong on the masks. The problem was there were no masks to buy because our own corporations have sold us out and stopped manufacturing in our country, and we couldn’t get our hands on enough masks for everyone. Instead of ramping up manufacturing of masks they were busy ramping up manufacturing ventilators. Once enterprising people started making their own masks and posting how-to videos on the internet suddenly masking was fine and a good idea according to the CDC.

Last Monday it was a Bank holiday in the UK. I was walking home through the town centre. I passed two bars within 100 yards of each other. Both were rammed with people. No social distancing. Doors closed, no ventilation. The next day I had to get two taxi's. Both told me I didn't need to wear a mask. I still did though. I see complacency as our biggest hurdle this coming winter.

Surprised about the taxi - you can't get in an Uber in London without a mask,they want a photo of you wearing one when you book as well. Mini cab drivers don't insist on it, but prefer customers to wear masks, and I always do anyway, as well as opening the windows when I get in the cab if they're closed.

Took my kid to primary school today, I didn't want to, but I did. The school has done what it can but it can't do alot really, you can see it isn't viable and certainly is no where near anything close to being called "covid secure". Its theatre and a play at trying to offer an impression of protection, "bubbles" are purely a word to reassure parents, all "bubbles" are compromised at so many points they are non existent. My experience today, the mums all stood close in large groups chatting and catching up, often at choke points in the school. Dad's attempted 2 metres but physically couldnt... Just my experience and I have no opinion on it.

A Supercomputer Analyzed COVID-19, and an Interesting New Hypothesis Has Emerged!
Earlier this summer, the Summit supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee set about crunching data on more than 40,000 genes from 17,000 genetic samples in an effort to better understand Covid-19. Summit is the second-fastest computer in the world, but the process -- which involved analyzing 2.5 billion genetic combinations -- still took more than a week. When Summit was done, researchers analyzed the results. It was, in the words of Dr. Daniel Jacobson, lead researcher and chief scientist for computational systems biology at Oak Ridge, a 'eureka moment.' The computer had revealed a new theory about how Covid-19 impacts the body: the bradykinin hypothesis. The hypothesis provides a model that explains many aspects of Covid-19, including some of its most bizarre symptoms. It also suggests 10-plus potential treatments, many of which are already FDA approved. Jacobson's group published their results in a paper in the journal eLife in early July.
According to the team's findings, a Covid-19 infection generally begins when the virus enters the body through ACE2 receptors in the nose, (The receptors, which the virus is known to target, are abundant there.) The virus then proceeds through the body, entering cells in other places where ACE2 is also present: the intestines, kidneys, and heart. This likely accounts for at least some of the disease's cardiac and GI symptoms. But once Covid-19 has established itself in the body, things start to get really interesting. According to Jacobson's group, the data Summit analyzed shows that Covid-19 isn't content to simply infect cells that already express lots of ACE2 receptors. Instead, it actively hijacks the body's own systems, tricking it into upregulating ACE2 receptors in places where they're usually expressed at low or medium levels, including the lungs.
The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) controls many aspects of the circulatory system, including the body's levels of a chemical called bradykinin, which normally helps to regulate blood pressure. According to the team's analysis, when the virus tweaks the RAS, it causes the body's mechanisms for regulating bradykinin to go haywire. Bradykinin receptors are resensitized, and the body also stops effectively breaking down bradykinin. (ACE normally degrades bradykinin, but when the virus downregulates it, it can't do this as effectively.) The end result, the researchers say, is to release a bradykinin storm -- a massive, runaway buildup of bradykinin in the body. According to the bradykinin hypothesis, it's this storm that is ultimately responsible for many of Covid-19's deadly effects.
Several drugs target aspects of the RAS and are already FDA approved, including danazol, stanozolol, and ecallantide, which reduce bradykinin production and could potentially stop a deadly bradykinin storm.
Interestingly, the researchers suggest vitamin D as a potentially useful Covid-19 drug. "The vitamin is involved in the RAS system and could prove helpful by reducing levels of another compound, known as REN," the report says. "Again, this could stop potentially deadly bradykinin storms from forming." Other compounds could treat symptoms associated with bradykinin storms, such as Hymecromone and timbetasin.

Always enjoy the presentations doc, but I have to ask you the question - who will elect to receive a vaccine that has been incredibly rushed in development and, at least in the US, is subject to political pressure and possible premature FDA approval from an anti-science administration trying to get re-elected? Having a vaccine is great in principle, however I don't imagine enough people will take it to achieve herd immunity. I'm not anti-vax, in fact I get my flu shot every year... but there is no way I'll get anywhere near a Covid vaccine until it has proved out for at least a couple of years in terms of efficacy, side effects and long term safety. Ps. unfortunately you may have jinxed Thailand - they just reported a locally transmitted case. Cheers

Please keep politics out of this. If a vaccine proves effective every country is going to release it, not limited to the US. It is everyone's choice to get it or not. All of the vaccines are being rushed not just US. Normally it would take years. I can guarantee that by year end several vaccines will be available worldwide. There will be many who choose to wait but also many in high risk groups will choose to get it. Politics took HCQ off the table with lies and how many lives were lost because of this. Enough already.

We talk a lot about treatments lowering the death rate. However I can find little information on treatments minimizing the effects of Covid. While I, and my family, are very concerned about the death rate, I am equally concerned about the long term effects. Has Dexamethalone, or other treatments also reduced the longer term effects. In short has the overall risk reduced since treatments have been found, or has only the risk of death reduced?
9 months is a short time to assess anything. You need longitudinal studies to draw sound evidence and conclusions, and those take years. In fact, until a major shift in the game happens like a viable vaccine, you won't get those studies started as resources are tied up in fighting the acute cases.
Early treatment with hydroxychloroquine would have reduced US deaths by 77% according to this world wide study.

Dr. John, I have been reporting in to the covid tracker app, and to you since the end of feb! At the moment Im very concerned about care home policies...the government need to do something to help families see their elderly loved ones in care homes. Many people pay 1000 of pounds per month for their care and they haven't seen their family since March. There must be a way of rapid testing relatives, to facilitate visits to these little people, bless them....
Doubt it. We apparently don't have enough tests. I just saw a report some folk are having to travel a hundred miles in order to get a test. Though I don't know if it is a local thing.

In Northampton, they identified the increase in cases as being from the *Sandwich Factory*. So they asked those employees and their households to self-isolate. The spread was blamed on car sharing, house-sharing, and socialising outside of work. 300 people tested positive, so that's one hell of a big house, car, and social event they all share!
The common denominator is the place where they all work. So let's hope there are some changes inside the factory - you know the place where cold food is prepared and shipped around the country. I feel bad that their sick pay is a reduced rate from their hourly pay. If they're now in forced isolation, they should get their full hourly rate, not the sick pay rate. (£90 a week btw) When the whole house-hold all work there it's not easy to live on the lesser amount.
Buildings where food is made has to follow some regs don't they regarding room temps and air circulation, that and the kind of workers the place attracts that are low earners and share transport and live in large groups to save on cost

Greencore in Moulton Park Ind Estate. I live a couple of miles away. The army had a mobile test centre over the road on the day it made the news, which impressed me. The majority of the staff are from eastern europe and all live in the same area of Northampton. Not sure if there have been any fatalities though as it is becoming obvious that people of Slavic origin do better than people of Anglo Saxon origin with the virus. It's a chilled food preparation facility and it should have shut down earlier than it did but they probably didn't want to jeopardise their contract with M&S preparing sandwiches.

There are a few cases where the person tested and was reinfected with a worse case months later. One in California who went to a protest after having it early on in March.

More regions without new confirmed infections. Most infections imported from Bosnia and Croatia. Numbers of imported cases should go down with end of summer vacation.

The past week was on pace for 1,600. Hospital admissions have nearly trebled in elderly people since early August.

In the Netherlands there were less admissions for months due to the Covid19 fear. Also we had under-mortality for months after the first 'peak'. Maybe the same happened in Spain.

I went a “season opener” middle school football game tonight as provider of EMS. I was told all on or near the field had to social distance & wear masks. Of the 1000ppl present, I estimate @best, 1 in 50 wore a mask. Players spectators coaches all huddled in groups; hundreds of masks littered the sideline ground. Very little if any, acknowledgement of a pandemic, all the while cases rising locally due to state university openings. I am a minority in my thinking here in NE Georgia. Nobody wants to hear about the virus or that ppl ought to be accountable. It’s horrendous to witness. Feels like I’m stuck in a Twilight Zone episode.

I think that if we've learned anything in this it is that the only difference between an armchair expert and a professional expert is that the latter has a vested interest. Dear Dr. John, some of us never will become bored by the papers.
While MRNA vaccines are ahead in the phase 2/3 testing, they have a major hurdle to overcome in any considered rollout. They need to be stored at -94F. Very few places have the ability to store vaccine at that temperature. Moderna states theirs is only needed to be at -4F but of course their tiger levels are not near what the Novavax vaccine has shown in their article in NEJM. Novavax is the vaccine with the best data and better production capabilities.
Dr. Campbell, can someone be shedding virus particles 4 months after initial illness? I know someone who got sick 4 months before and tested positive for Covid. Now is sick again and got a positive test again. How many of these people can actually be counted unless they are in a research hospital? Most people just get tested and forgotten. So to say that it is really rare is too early in my opinion. Thank you.

Dear Doc John, i wanted to book a covid19 test (london) as i have symptoms and i have been offered to walk 7miles to go 7 miles to get bck home (nearest test centre) as they told me not to get a cab. and no public transport! I don't drive...
It takes 2 hr and a 30 mins to walk there and 2hrs. and a 30 mins to got back home and its raining! UK gov is great - they are tackling with this pandemic perfect !!! If i cycle, it will take me 50 mins but i don't have that kind of energy to cycle as i have terrible cough, headache and fatigue ! Especially with london traffic, i wouldn't dare to cycle on these crazy packed/polluted roads!

I'd be a little cautious of numbers from Thailand. I'm not sure if this is still the case, but as of ~10 years ago their position was that there was no malaria in Bangkok, and they wouldn't test you for it unless you told them you'd been somewhere else recently. I know of people who had to lie and say they'd been to a rural area in order to get tested and diagnosed with malaria.

Please do additional research on the story of Nancy Pelosi in the hair salon without a mask before bashing her on your UA-cam channel. She issued a statement, and so did her hair stylist, that she was specifically invited by the owner of the salon and that they were providing service to only one client at a time, being closed to everyone else. Her mask was off briefly to wash the back of her hair, then she was directed to walk from the shampoo area back to the styling station. In the meantime someone snapped her picture and sold it to her political opponents. This was a set up for political reasons to try to embarrass her.
Nancy Pelosi is the Speaker of the House of Representatives, in other words, the leader of one of USA's two houses of Congress. She belongs to the opposite political party from the US President and is unfortunately a frequent target of political bashing by the US President, who is a known bully, as well as his supporters.

So I don't see why it matters whether or not she was invited. Representative Pelosi should have recognized that the situation did not conform to local restrictions. And then it was her responsibility to instruct the stylist on this point, not vice-versa.

In my daughter's school a girl and 3 students that had been in "CONTACT" with her were sent home to quarantine and there reason was because "she sneezed an unusual amount of times". It is so ridiculous.

Everybody in the US should understand the number of "natural deaths" that occur. The average for the US is 8 per thousand per year. So to compare your daily covid death report, multiply your population by 0.008 then divide by 365. You'll find that covid deaths are a small fraction of daily natural deaths.

Houston Texas medical system just increased their warning level on covid cases. The beds are filling up but not fully yet. Most people in Houston are wearing masks and I dare say that's increasingly common throughout the US. The weather is about to get cold with the virus entrenched within the population.

The metric I see is that "Currently hospitalized" is down 14% week over week, and the positivity testing rate is lower by half since last month. All the news seems to be positive -- not sure what you are looking at.

Stopping kids from getting covid would be like stopping kids from getting a cold. What do you expect the minister to do? Shut all schools for multiple years?
I think the death rate is the most important number to watch. People are not needing hospitalization and are not dying in anywhere near the numbers that happened in the beginning of this pandemic. Some figures are even less than the flu.
And you don't think the trump administration is doing everything in it's power to change those numbers to make trump look better? Please tell me you've been paying more attention than that.

Most schools in Texas opened this week. K-4 have been opened for three weeks. The one school I know of, with 400 children has had no cases.
Similar situation here in central Florida too! (Opened 3 weeks ago, no cases, thankfully!) The school I have the most inside info on has a thermal camera at the main door - every child screened, everyday.

@@aengusmacnaughton1375 Oh, I don't think it's catching all cases, sorry if that's how I put that out there. I was just stating it was a smart move on the part of admin to get technology on board to try to help. I do know the Christian school staff very well, many parents I know personally too and the church connected with the school is my church too. (online school and church only for my family because my son is immune compromised.)
The school has made the choice to say masks or not - it's the parents choice. Some staff wear them some do not. Overall it seems everyone has a very strong sense of community and kindness towards each other and are isolating if they have any concern. It's not a perfect system - is any?

This has been in the works for months. The warnings of the seriousness of this pandemic were made abundantly clear to trump at least by December 2019, and some say it was in November 2019. A record number of CEO's also quit last year and set up their private island estates. I don't follow the stack market, but many who do say the indications were evident there as well.
Oh the good part is yet to come when Trumpers announce a "miracle cure" with no scientific support but the lunatics will be out with their AR15s after the election claiming Dems are covering up the TrumpSnakeOilCure and they will try to start a civil war.
