Matt Rempe charging on Ilya Lyubushkin - Tough Call Suspension Recommendation

- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- In less than two weeks Matt Rempe has miltiple fights and a match penalty to his record. He received no fine or suspension for that previous hit to Nathan BastianC and now added this unpenalized hit to Ilya Lyubushkin. Lyubushkin left the game with a head injury and didn’t return.
100% charging. I'm surprised this wasn't called by the on-ice official.
I'm not surprised at all.
I am not surprised either, the NHL isn't consistent and leave people confused about the rules.
Are you really surprised?... I'm not.
charging and boarding penalties although your analysis is faulty

Brutal. Looks like an intent to injure.
it is
This kid has injured 3 players in 4 games, it is intentional.

No Leaf fan here, but this was charging before he even made contact. More than two strides is charging and regardless of you saying he still had one foot on the ice doesn't negate the 4 full strides prior to the leap into Lyubushkin. When Betman constructed this circus we can't be surprised clowns like Rempe show up. If Rempe isn't suspended for this, the NHL discipline protocols are a joke.
The NHL discipline protocols are a joke. I have quit watching the games.
typical leaf fan
That’s exactly what I say in the video. The distance travelled makes this a charge, hence the suspension.
It would not mean that it’s a joke.
It would mean that it would absolutely be legal to hit anyone in the NHL like Rempe did … so anyone could legally do the same hit on anyone in their team in their next matchup.
As a Leafs fan myself, I'd say it's definitely a penalty but not sure I'll call it suspension worthy. I've seen far worse over the years.
Charging. Both feet left the ice.
Only after the hit did the lead foot come off the ice but do think it was charging because of the distance he traveled
Yeah, on contact lmfao get your glasses checked grandma
@@danielhathaway184 Bahahahaha. His lead foot comes off the ice well before contact. Give it a rest.
@@reallychillgoose His feet are both off the ice before contact. No need for glasses -- just a grounding in reality and the slightest bit of honesty.
Exactly correct observation, and this allows Rempe's forearm/elbow to strike Ilya's neck and shoulder area in a downward direction that causes impact of the head against the boards/glass.
No doubt this hit was intended to inflict the maximum damage possible, and cause serious injury to a player.
George Paros will do nothing. It's a Toronto game so Paros will probably want to suspend Lybuskin for getting in the way.
If it was a Leaf that hit Rempe, 5 games off.... Garbage refs.
Here's a sxcerpt from the NHL rule book on charging:
Charging is the action where a player takes more than two strides or travels an excessive distance to accelerate through a body check for the purpose of punishing the opponent. This includes skating or leaving one's feet (jumping)
This hit checks every one of those boxes.
The NHL rulebook says nothing about number of strides. I show Rule 42: Charging from the NHL rule book in the video.
Yet you spoke about strides and gliding in the video@@ToughCall
Could you point out exactly where the NHL rulebook mentions a specific number of strides for charging/

If Reaves did exactly the same thing it would have been called charging, hit to the head and intent to injure. 10 games. I would also like to see the referees called out and named, especially the ones who are clearly standing right there watching.
Same one who literally jumped out of the way so he wasn't killed by the charge himself. And just like 'yup looks good". Hopefully that clown is forced to go work at mcdonalds because he clearly can't ref.

People like the kid because he gets into fights. I like that too. What I don't like it deliberately trying to injure players. No other sport allows this. The NHL has to get with the times.
"No other sport allows this."
watch much NFL? the only thing missing from that league is trees on the sidelines so that players can swing in on a vine to make the hit
There is no question...it is charging. Even if he didn't leave his feet BEFORE the impact, he clearly and uneccesarily left his feet by jumping up into the hit with intent to make it way harder, which is completely stupid for a guy as tall as he is. The ref who was right there watching it should be penalized or fined for such a blatant missed call, even at full speed, it's completely obvious it's a charge by anyone who knows or who has played hockey in their life.
Even if it's debatable whether he left his feet or not, look at the number of strides he took to make the hit. What is a charge penalty in hockey?
Section Six - Playing Rules Page
(Note) Charging is the action where a player takes more than two strides or travels an excessive distance to accelerate through a body check for the purpose of punishing the opponent.
75% of hits are probably charging if they enforced that rule.
I see a few people quoting that, but I believe that’s the Hockey USA rulebook, not the NHL rulebook. I show the NHL’s Rule 42 in the video.
Why are you quoting a USA Hockey rule when they don't play under that rulebook? That rulebook is as useful as the FIFA soccer rulebook in this situation.
Rule 7.4 - Charging
Rule 7.4 - Charging
Charging is when a player:
Jumps to check an opponent.
Builds up speed by taking two or more strides immediately prior to making contact.
Travels an excessive distance with the sole purpose of delivering such a hit.
Violently and unnecessarily checks an opponent in any manner.
Delivers a body check to an opponent’s blind side.
A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards,
That's from Hockey Canada. Is that good enough for you?@@joem2747
For anyone who knows hockey, Rempe's hit on Lyubushkin is a textbook charge. He takes roughly 5 straight line strides to generate speed, then despite being 7" taller than his opponent & outweighing him by about 35 lbs, he leaves his feet at contact, driving his target's head into the glass. I don't know if Rempe intended to hurt Lyubushkin, but the sequence has all the hallmarks of a predatory hit & he obviously concussed Lyubushkin. I have little faith in Parros punishing Rempe.
Why do you say you have little faith in "Parros punishing Rempe"?
@@jeremycoyle2782because his track record is a complete joke. It’s clear that terrible plays don’t get suspended and relatively minor cross checks with no injury get 5 games. Offensive that this guy is still in charge of discipline.
Even if you wanna argue this isn’t a charge... doesn’t change the fact he left his feet... which is an automatic penalty. Why a 6’8 guy is jumping into his hit on a guy bent over in the corner of the boards is beyond me. Leagues a joke. Rielly’s crosscheck was a 5 game suspension, and this wasn’t even a 2 min penalty🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️

Technically get your eyes checked. He accélérâtes hard for several steps and leaves his feet to make the hit. When you leave your feet that’s called jumping. Intent to injure for sure. Intent to injure should be rewarded with penalty and suspension.
Technically tell me at what point in the video your eyes see him leave his feet in order to make contact. An exact time stamp please.
@@ToughCall I don't know how you can keep saying this. Every time you say his right foot is on the ice, it clearly is not! :15, :34, :57, 1:35, 1:45, 2:12. Not only that, it is NOT shoulder to shoulder - because of his height and feet leaving the ice, his shoulder is above the head and it's his elbow slamming Lyubushkin's head into the glass, all very clear in those same time stamp clips. Not much head contact????
@@philcig At all those time stamps he’s got two feet off the ice, but that’s after contact. Not prior to or during.
@@ToughCall doesn’t matter. His intention was to drive Lyubushkin, who was about 3 feet away from the glass, into the glass, that’s why his feet left the ice.

4 out of 5 Troubas. Definitely got more height than his first attempt to injure. He's been in the NHL for what, two weeks? and already has injured 2 players. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm................
And gliding in the NHL rule is not an aspect for charging. That "distance traveled" doesn't care about gliding. He made violent contact due to speed. That is charging. Jumping into contact, also charging. So he matched 2 criteria, when only 1 is necessary.
And the jump part, doesn't say it has to be done before contact is made.
Should be 10 game suspension minimum! Took at least 3 strides, both feet left the ice and targeted the head with intent to injure!

@@jeffreycairns767 Exactly. It was a missed 2 minute minor penalty. There was nothing super egregious about this.
And he didn’t jump into his opponent. The contact with the dman took place initially in his upper body - the upper body folded backwards leaving the strong part of his body - the hip still planted. This created a pendulum effect, which created Rempe’s huge center of gravity to lift.
remember what happens when your feet leave the ice during a hit , he clearly jumped into the hit
Good breakdown. I saw charging as well, this is a hit I would lay in NHL 24 cause my guy was tired lol. My guess is they let him run rampant for a month but he will eventually catch a suspension. Kid has unreal heart and toughness, but he plays to injure other players and soon he will cross way over a line.
yeah, this kid does not have a long future in the NHL if he keeps it up.
He is going hit one of the star players and possibly end their career. Do the Rangers play the Blackhawks soon. What if he hits Connor with one of those hits and no suspension or fine. He is out to injure other players and has done so in the short time he has been in league. This needs to be dealt with now before it he seriously hurts someone. His record so far could be considered assault under the law as he is out to hurt the other players.
Not his fault how big he is and yes a for sure charge but zero suspension
Dumbest explanation I’ve ever heard - you gave every reason why “technically” it wasn’t a penalty. He did everything he could as you stated to stay within the rule book - he glided beforehand, turned his body, kept his feet on the ice (momentum cause the skates to rise up after the hit), and he kept his arm down so as not to hit the head. Everyone who states his intent is to injure people - would he do everything correctly as so eloquently stated by the poster if his intent was to injure?? No, didn’t think so. 90% of checks start with someone striding from away from the player to be checked. If Rempe was 5’10” instead of 6’7” this wouldn’t be an issue.
You forgot the part where I read directly from the rulebook about distance travelled, which is the main reason this technically is a penalty. Not one time did I say he did everything correctly.
@@ToughCall He takes 4 or 5 strides and travels a bit of distance. Players frequently that many strides to make a hit on the forecheck. This was violent because Rempe is big. It wasn't egregious like Scheifele on Evans a few years back. This should have been a minor for charging and ended there.
@@joem2747 Curious, if this hit was only violent because of his size, why are you giving him a minor penalty at all?
@@ToughCall The charging rule gives pretty wide discretion to the refs when choosing how much "violence" is allowable. If Rempe is Mats Zuccarello sized do you think he gets a penalty? Of course not, there wouldn't be nearly as much violence to the hit and there would be no penalty.
He’s dirty! This big ogre leads with his elbow on every hit, BUSH LEAGUE!!
Will be used by NHL as a new instructional CHARGING101 video going forward.
The Ref was there
And some Refs might have called it as charging they have asked the others officials for help if need be
Back to 93 Leafs bad joke
NYR fan here- I thought it was a charging penalty- and looked EXACTLY like a typical Alex Ovechkin hit that he used to deliver 2-3 times a game without ever getting called. Ovy constantly catapulted himself into opponents just like this- so is it a penalty now that a 6'7" guy does it or do superstars play by an entirely different set of rules?
Sorry, 6'8".
I agree. It reminds me of Ovechkin hits too. I have a few suspension videos for Ovechkin on here too. Lol.
I have a couple problems with this hit. 1) I think he was DEFINITELY charging. 2) I think he INTENTIONALLY left his feet, to increase the force of the hit, and 3) it looked to ME at least, that while not "the PRIMARY point of contact", there was what LOOKED like an elbow to Lyubushkin's head. The way his elbow kind of pushes out, and up as though he's pushing off Lyubushkin's head with the elbow. That looks like a CLEAR case of "intent to injure". But what do I know lol.
Those are the things that caught MY attention anyway. I thought it should have been a 5 game suspension, especially since there was no call on it, and he was able to play the rest of the game with no consequence by the refs.
He seems to hit a leafs player. That's obviously not a penalty
Here's the thing about Rempe, that I don't think a lot of people see. I'm an off ice official for the Thunderbirds and I saw him do this a couple of times in his last season of junior. He was suspended twice in his last season of junior for boarding, for what I considered at the time to be unnecessary hits. There's a part of his game that can be undisciplined and when I saw this my mind went right back to the 21-22 WHL season. He's just prone to making bad decisions when playing the body.
It’s clearly a charge and I disagree with your assessment that Rempe did not leave his feet. Both skates are off the ice as he follows through on the hit. It’s a reckless hit worth a suspension, I doubt very much the goofy department of safety will even review it.
We could use more content on good checks please.
If you're talking degrees of freedom, Lyubushkin could literally have stepped foward, backward, jumped, reversed checked left into rempe, or gone right with Rempe into the boards. His choice? Freeze and eat the check. Superb. He didn't even panic and turtle and have Rempe go over him. He literally did the worst thing he could...nothing. Freeze it at 0:18, Does Rempe have a right to follow through on the check with his shoulder? Absolutely. You're move Iyla.
It doesn’t matter what Lyibushkin does. The onus is on the player delivering the check to do it safely.
@@ToughCall of course it matters what Lyubushkin does. Physical contact is allowed if you stop skating prior to the check and dont run through them, you don't elbow them, and you don't leave your feet. If you play in the rules and someone gets hurt, tough titties. We don't even have Chytil bro and he's prob never gonna be a real NHLer ever again.
@@justinfalzon6854 But if the player is hitting by the rules, that’s what makes it a clean check. That scenario still has nothing to do with what the puck carrier does.
@@ToughCallIt was a clean check. You all but acknowledge it. Your big gripe is he turns his shoulder into him? As opposed to what? Belly flopping into him? It was a clean check. You are upset Lyubushkin got injured. That's the only problem. And you think its worthy a suspension which is ridiculous. On the sole premise that getting hit by Rempe against the boards and standing there is a car crash.
@@ToughCallI can understand people's grievance with the Bastian hit. I don't agree with it, I think that was also clean. But I can understand it. He was second man in. Bastian didnt see him at all and didn't even know he had another man coming, let alone a fucking train. But Lyubushkin saw him coming. What the hell. Do something.

His record in the short time in the league shows intend to injure his fellow players. This could easily lead to charges of assault if it is allowed to continue, and the league does nothing to stop him. They are leaving open to a lawsuit...

He is going to hurt another player badly, perhaps ending their career. This video creator that has shown the two hits that resulted in concussions to both players. Before you say it is because he is the larger player. This person showed numerous examples of larger players hitting smaller players. He goes for a hit to the head and drives through the head. The example showed the larger players hitting core to core and then driving through the core. They resulted in a massive hit, but they did not injure the other player. These hits were delivered to great effects but only injured someone's pride.

His feet left the ice. He did not leave his feet. Leaving his feet is nearly impossible. He jumped, a bit.
god i love Rempe
Absolutely a charge. Also looks like his skates are both off the ice at the moment of contact.
Charging used to be decided on how many strides they took before the hit
That looks like charging. A pretty textbook example of it. He glides in but his body orientation shows he’s trying to keep the momentum he generates with the strides he previously took. He lowers his center of gravity and puts his feet parallel to each other, he was trying to hit him with as much force as he could get away with.
I'm not. Big hockey fan either way. The most recent Rempe fights have renewed my interest in watching and wondering what this guys goal is. Personally after seeing this footage and knowing this guy knows he is bigger then most if the league I think he is on a mission to hurt players. It's one thing if they constantly hound you or there's bad blood etc but how many years have we been able to watch hockey and the fighting stays reasonably low. Every players not out there trying to rip the other guys heads off every game. Personally part of it is age young and , big guy and wanting to make a name for himself. But there's another part after watching this video showing a lack of empathy for players, no respect that one deliberate careless move could end a players career. Most people in life on the street and in games as a whole have the moral compass to try and win a fight or do what they have to do to defend themselves but without a desire ti kill someone. Thsts ehy murderers just go one step to far due to a poor judgement and lack of empathy for people and hate. This guy seems to hold this trait. Well Orin see in the news in 5 years after he is banned for paralyzing. Player he goes off the deep end and severely beats someone at a local shopping mall that looked st him wrong. Both feet left the ice, elbow makes contact first. This Guy is just a thug and Refs just don't get it. Intent to injure is the first thought in any collision of this nature. If it were the other way around I would say the same thing (not a matter of what jersey they are wearing).
Can someone explain why this also wouldn't be boarding? Is it because Lyubushkin puts himself in this position? I feel like he's "defenseless" in the sense that he's not close enough to the boards to brace for the impact but far enough away that a violent check could (and did) cause injury due to the boards.
because its not a garbage yank teams player. Clifford did that to Cole to a much less extent in the playoffs and got suspended. League is fixed to keep the inbred yanks winning so they keep watching.
I don't think he is defenceless he knows he's coming and could try to absorb impact

Yup.... Parros has to go. Simple as that.
So I take it you think the hit was OK. I wish it would of been you on the receiving end of the hit. The -player showed a total disrespect for the safety of his opponent with his size and weight advantage and the speed he used to make the vicious hit.
Ok I know we disagree some but glad you gave the kid a fair shake here.
Case studies with the tall dudes vs short dudes are always interesting and rempe functions as a tall guy in every hit.
Dude is gonna cripple somebody and the league will be responsible
Rempe needs to be suspended
Charging yes but as long as the NHL allows players to "finish their checks" there will be injuries like this. If the rules were changed to state that body checks can only be delivered to a player while they have the puck this would result in players not following through on an often defenseless opponent.
yeah so he took 5 strides starting from when he's turning at the opposite circle, more than half the width of the ice ,and he left his feet as he made the hit. very dangerous.
More than three strides
He left his feet, it was a jump at contact. and hit his head. It was malicious and intentionality attempting to hurt. I wasn't a body check in a normal sense of the game.
There should definitely have been a penalty here. Even without reviewing the video several times you could easily see Remke (1) taking several strides hard and with accelleration into Lubushkin, (2) Rempke could easily see that Lubuskin was vulnerable at the time (3) Lubuskin did not see him coming and could not protect himself from the hit and Rempke knew this but was reckless in carrying forward and/or failed to modify his speed or the location of the hit. (4) I would add this also, that it was pretty clear that Rempke in all the circumstances, knowing his own size (6'7" and 241 lbs) and his speed, probably 20 km / hr knew that he would cause a great deal of harm and would rock the player in the head against the dasher boards !
Remke has made other dirty hits this season. Also stupid fights for absolutely NO reason, other than to showcase. He has lost more figthts than lost. He is not well disciplined and dangerous. Should be out of the league as he has no respect for other players. Bettman and the league and the Rangers organization have to deal with this.
The 2023-24 Official NHL Rules - prescribes as follows: Rule 41 - Boarding
41.1 Boarding - A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player who
checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that
causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or
dangerously. The severity of the penalty, based upon the impact with
the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.
There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the
application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player
applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless
position and if so, he must avoid or minimize contact. However, in
determining whether such contact could have been avoided, the
circumstances of the check, including whether the opponent put
himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously
with the check or whether the check was unavoidable can be
considered. This balance must be considered by the Referees when
applying this rule.
Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an
obvious “icing” or “off-side” play which results in that player hitting or
impacting the boards is “boarding” and must be penalized as such. In
other instances where there is no contact with the boards, it should be
treated as “charging.”
That was a clean hit. You want to see a dirty hit that 2 of the Tkachuks get away with regularly. And that’s standing with your back to an incoming player, there is no puck …not even in the area, and then when the unsuspecting player who is not even looking at Tkachuk, Tkachuk launches himself backwards into the player…and usually flattens him. I’ve seen them do it several times and never a penalty call. Remke getting suspended for that hit is ridiculous because he did everything right, and braced himself to make the hit. Otherwise how was he going to do it and protect himself…come in straight on!? That would’ve even more dangerous..for them both. If he was 5’11” and 185 not 6’7” and 250 there may not be an injury. Clean hit!
No. He shouldn’t come straight on. But he does, and you’re absolutely right about that causing the danger. Just because he rotates his body to face sideways doesn’t mean he isn’t still coming straight on. That’s why he has to launch. And that’s what makes it dangerous.
EVERY dog has their day! Some day sooner or later Matt Rempe will get his... They all do get theirs!
I’m old school hockey but, it’s clearly a charge. A suspension ? Absolutely not.
He launches himself, trying to cause as much head trauma as possible. This league will suspend Raffi Torres for love taps but won't suspend this clown? 😂😂😂 This league is clearly biased, and they aren't even trying to hide it.
He does leave his feet, he drives in and in the process of hitting leaves his feet.
If this happens in open ice, it's a good hard hit. The proximity of the boards makes it dangerous. This is boarding.
Garry Bettman is a life long Ranger fan, no way he gets penalized.
