I post videos explaining everything I'd do if I were the Head of the NHL's Department of Player Safety. You'll find suspension recommendations and explanations on all the latest NHL big hits and controversial plays. Also the odd video of NHL goals, hits, and saves.
I also have a companion audio podcast available on Apple, Spotify, and almost everywhere else. Visit my podcast main page anchor.fm/josh-boulton9 to subscribe and listen on whatever your preferred podcast listening format.

Noesen hit on Thompson - Have your say!
What do you think should come of this Stefan Noesen hit on Tage Thompson? Was a match penalty the right call? Should a suspension be coming? Or was it just a player bracing? Have your say!

Stone contact on Heiskanen - Tough Call Review
Переглядів 4,2 тис.День тому
Mark Stone appeared to tackle Miro Heiskanen at the knee. Turns out he himself was tripped by the stick of Roop Hintz. No one with Stone’s injury and concussion history is going to go helmet first at one of the more heavily padded areas of a skater’s body.
Kucherov dangerous trip on Rasmussen - Tough Call Recommendation
Переглядів 985День тому
Nikita Kucherov bailed on the puck and chose to intentionally target the skates of Michael Rasmussen. This is the same as any other “dangerous trip” and the NHL should have fined him at the very least.

Seeler hit on Bastian - Tough Call Recommendation
Переглядів 279День тому
Nick Seeler hit Bathan Bastian and I can see why the NHL today would deem this clean. The blame is placed squarely on Bastian to be more aware, but to me there’s still a degree of avoidability here that’s getting harder and harder to justify accepting.

Dylan Larkin got away with a retaliatory punch to Viktor Hedman, who ended up alone in the box for roughing. Detroit ended up with a powerplay.
Lauko boarding on Bahl - Tough Call Recommendation

Jakub Lauko is lucky this was reduced to a minor penalty. It’s avoidable, dangerous contact to the back of an opponent near the boards. Why would we not try harder to eliminate this stuff?

Conor Garland grabbed Connor McDavid and blatantly illegally intentionally eliminated him from the final 20 seconds of a one goal game. Now McDavid will likely be fined and Garland will have no consequences whatsoever. Bush league tactics are repeatedly rewarded in the NHL, and it needs to stop.
McDavid crosscheck on Garland - Tough Call Recommdation
Переглядів 13 тис.21 день тому
Connor McDavid crosschecked Conor Garland in the face. You can say it was worth it. You can say the league needs to be better at protecting its stars. You can say Garland had it coming. But you can’t say this is acceptable. Understandable, but not acceptable. In the current context of the NHL this shouldn’t be more than a fine. In my world, it’s 6-10 games.

Grebenkin hit on Theodore - Tough Call Review
Neely did move out of the way at the last split second- showing this slow motion, now speed it up real time, there is no avoiding that by Ulf, and he had to make contact either way- and he did play the puck. It is not as dirty as the Bost-In Ruins made it out to be
Awe too bad. Ovi was it
Clean hit. Devastating but clean
Tage is leaning down so far his spine is parallel with the ice. He also seems like he was losing balance during. Noesen plays the puck, and then braces for contact, because there's no time after he makes h is play. It's not a 'clean hit' because it's not even a hit. It's an incidental collision.
Seems like a legal hit. Noesen doesn't raise into the hit, Thompson is leaning forward and the head is low. Thomson also is trying to play the puck which makes him available to be hit. Sabres should get a penalty for not standing up for their guy though
I usually agree with your takes but I think this is way off. It's a minor penalty. We don't want there to be fines given for minor penalties. Nothing like a slew foot. A slow foot is dangerous because of the assault-like nature of the action which can result in damage to the head especially. Very different play.
The problem is that Thompson is too short. If he was taller, Noesen would not have made head contact
Clear head contact… 3 game suspension for sure
Hartman is a shit bag. Coming from a wild fan he needs to go buh bye
Aaaand now Crosby is his captain 🤣
Thompson was leaning and Nilsson cleared the puck and delivered a hit
Absolutely on purpose. Noesen takes advantage of the situation to put a hit on Thompson who is in a vulnerable position and never even touched the puck. I don't see elevating your shoulder into the other player as bracing for contact ... as opposed to tucking in and making yourself as compact as possible. I think a 1 game suspension is likely, 2 if DoPS wants to make a statement that headshots will not be tolerated.
"Thompson who is in a vulnerable position and never even touched the puck" well Noesen DID touch the puck, he was the one who was receiving the hit. He played the puck, and then tensed up.
Only one guy slew foots the other.
McDavid was holding Garland down before Garland started holding him down so stop making excuses for McDavid. Oiler fans totally ignore that fact and try to make McDavid the innocent victim.
Just an unlucky situation, Noesen wasn’t lining Thompson up for a hit, Thompson had his head down and was reaching with his stick which made his head very low. No penalty in my opinion, Thompson was wrong place wrong time
butter soft sabres no one stuck up for that😂😂😂😮😮😮😮😮😮😮✌️✌️✌️💔💔😭😭😭😹
Little embellished
Lol
Can’t except he lost him
Isles fan here def a 5 minute major puck was way gone and decided to try and take Thompson head off. All for the big hits but this was straight dirty. No puck and on a defenseless player
Noesen can see Thompson clear as a bell, but hunches down for contact knowing Thompson is leaning forward trying to corral the puck. Little different than the Whitecloud hit on Knies of the Leafs in a similar vulnerable position a while back. The onus is on Noesen not to follow through when the target's head is the point of contact. He deserved the match penalty imo.
I think Noesen mis-timed his hit, and it was avoidable head contact. Tage didn’t materially change where his head was before the hit (although he tried to get higher to avoid it), and Noesen does the classic shoulder shrug through the head. I think the match penalty was the right call.
Match penalty There was head contact and lifted his shoulder to make it happen Didn’t need to make that hit
Sabres fan here. I took a lot of shit for saying the Sabres on the ice were right not to drop the gloves and to give the refs an opportunity to punish Noesen themselves. I think it's avoidable head contact, and the match penalty was appropriate.
The sabres doing nothing on the ice after the hit was the biggest embarrassment to the organization in its entire history. Doesn’t matter if it was an accident. You stick up for the best player on your team when he gets hit like that.
Anyone who says this was bracing for contact has never played hockey. It's defiantly match penalty. 100% avoidable.
I guess all those fellas at the Department of Safety never put on a pair of skates before.
I think he was just bracing for contact, History of the player may say otherwise, but if he no priors Id lean toward giving the guy a pass on this one.
NHL needs longer suspensions. The punishment for failing a drug test is 20 games minimum, and you almost never see drug use anymore. For accidental bad hits it's fine, and I'm not saying they're the same thing, but if the NHL wants to address this issue they should address it fully.
Bennett is an actual psycho
6-10 games 😂 that’s too funny dude. Back at it again
This is a pointless, dsngerous, intentional, and dangerous play. How would the game suffer by getting rid of it?
the NHL officiating this year is utter garbage. The only question is five for boarding or five for charging?
As a fan of neither team, I don't think Stone could have done much to avoid this. If anything I should lean Dallas since I have Miro on my fantasy team!
yeah no u can learn to fall properly, the fuck is that superman shit
Fall properly? He didn’t fall. He was tripped. There’s no way to get tripped properly.
Steve Dangle even had a massive tangent about this one too, and he's a Leafs homer first, and the Red Wings are an in division rival. Unserious league with the least reliable DoPS.
Well said!
stupid laukos arms position but defender needs to protect himselfin such situations
so actually u know what interference means after all.couldnt we clasify the hit as preventing the opposite player from getting to the puck this time again? 😅
I can only imagine what this is in reference to. Can’t wait to find out. 🤪
dont be ridiculous
What would be ridiculous about this? You’re intentionally removing a safety apparatus from an opponent after the whistle. It’s already supposed to be an automatic penalty any time, even during the play.
@@ToughCall im gonna say it again.dont be ridiculous.you are talking like he removed his oxygen equipement from his mouth deep in the water.zuccharello wasnt targeting the helmet.he just grabbed the only part of andersson which he could have by reaching from behind the player standing in between them in a heated moment. and u are talking about fines, soccermom!
@@robertculliford9378 Removing someone's helmet and then causing them to fall to the ice with their hands and arms being restrained is extremely dangerous. This can result in life altering injury, not to mention there have been cases where it is life ending for a person to hit their unprotected head on the ice. The person being ridiculous here is you.
Clean
This podcaster is wrong. If trying to skate left, the skater needs to push with the right foot.
You plant your right to start your turn. But you transfer your weight to the left leg once you’re turning, and he would use that left toe as a pivot, digging it in to the ice and using it as a pick to turn faster. He was tripped right as this transition was happening.
at the time of vontact ypu can clearly see the kick with his right foot his left foot isn't going to get opened up like that if planted to the ice. And no he's not gonna go down from a light tap like that unless he really wants to the guy weighs 225.
@@yejyejyej At the time of contact I agree his left foot wasn’t planted yet. But neither was his right foot. He was just in the middle of transferring to his left foot and was about to plant it. His skate got spun around and there was nothing left to bear his weight, so he just kept on going down.
@ so you're saying he was what??? levitating?😂 jesus christ you cannot be this dumb or deluded.. That fall wasn't natural in the slightest. If it was first of all his left leg would've kicked back from the contact and he would've spinned from the momentum change. Now he just flew staight for miros legs and you can't tell me it was accidental he even extrnded his arms to make a play happen at the puck.. Otherwise he would've missed miros legs.
@ All of what you said is exactly right. That’s why all of it happened. His left left DID go backward. His left toes were pulled around so much the were facing Hintz. He didn’t “spin” so much because he wasn’t going fast enough, but he did rotate around. His whole body rotated to the left, which his way his head was to his left and his right shoulder made contact with Heiskanen. It’s not like he just dove forward. And no. He didn’t levitate. 😂If he levitated he wouldn’t have fallen over and gone down. Have you ever fallen going up the stairs because your foot either missed the next step up or slipped off? You fall forwards, even though your other foot is “planted”. That’s because you’re in the process of transferring weight to the upper foot. It’s physics.
There was just a called penalty shot in the Ottawa-Washington game, and a carbon copy of the same play in the Islanders-Philly game that was only called a penalty. Check that out, it’s a great example of inconsistent refereeing.
Thanks. I’ll look these up!
Even if he had the puck that a hit to the head as well was interference I think 6 games for interference/illegal check to the head
The actual bad part, in my opinion, was him laughing on the bench afterwards. The guy did not care that a player was injured because of him whether intentional or not.
This is absolutely fair.
Oh grow up. He doesn't have to play the rest of the game sad because he got tripped into someone and they got hurt.
@ I didn’t say for him to play sad. I’m saying he shouldn’t be ecstatic showing the iPad to everyone like he won a trophy.
@samuelpratt642 or he was laughing after seeing how Hintz went after him even though he's the one who tripped him, which is objectively funny irony.
@@nolan13075the guy is gonna miss out playing on a national level just because of this play. nothing funny about it. stone will end up on the IR soon too but we all know why and that’s pretty funny!
it's unbelievable this didn't even get a fine. This league does such a bad job at protecting its players.
That and they overprotect too.. it's just a confusing ball
@@earthquakkejake9894 They react to the level of PR. McDavid on national TV crosschecks a guy and they throw the book at him. No one's watching this game between TB and Detroit out of market, so no one's going to care, so nothing.
@@Leafsdudelollll 3 games to mcdavid, who has a history of dirty plays, uncalled or not, is absolutely NOT throwing the book at him. You're not wrong about the rest but jeesh
@v0lc0mma5ter Based on the NHLs own precedent, it absolutely is.
@v0lc0mma5ter PS. Tell me you irrationally hate McDavid without telling me you irrationally hate McDavid.
Nice job filtering the comments on this one!
I never filter comments and I never delete them either. I try to let people say what they want.
yeah, as a Canucks fan, I think Hughes rarely does anything wrong, but this was on him.
Honestly they’ve gotta do away with those bulky metal boxes inside the net. Ras would’ve been fine had it not been for that, probably
If he doesn’t get 5 games MINIMUM I’m not watching this league for the rest of the season. McDavid got 3 just for dumb retaliation against a clear non hockey play. This play right here had no purpose other than to injure the opponent. Disgusting and made me lose all the respect I have for Kuch, what a child.
Not Mark Stone's fault. Not rooting for either team.
Jesus loves you ❤️🔥❤️✝️He has a great plan for you
can jesus tell the refs to get their shit together
At least say his name somewhat near correctly. Phonetically, it’d be more like hey-skin-en.
why skin?there is no 'i' but 'a'...heiskAnen
I think in this case Mark Stone was saying bye-skin-en
@@robertculliford9378 I said /more like/. I’m not Finnish. Just playing it by ear from the broadcasts, but the way I guessed it is closer to it than the way the video’s guy said it.
@@xxJet8402xx i was just wondering if u are finnish and if you could confirm the broadcast pronunciation is correct.because i think '...skinen' is wrong and it pisses me off everytime i hear. but i agree that the pronunciation in the video is completely off
