- Dig into two testing techniques for viruses: PCR tests to diagnose an infection and immunoassays to detect antibodies.
--
A new virus emerges and spreads like wildfire. In order to contain it, researchers must first collect data about who’s been infected. Two main viral testing techniques are critical: one tells you if you have the virus and the other shows if you’ve already had it. So, how exactly do these tests work? Cella Wright explores the science of PCR tests and immunoassays.

Ted ed makes you feel like a half doctor sometimes
True.
Me, before a TED lesson: duh!
Me, after a TED lesson: I'm Something of a Scientist Myself.
Agreed.

No, I'm staying humble
Can we all just appreciate the illustrations, and the transitions of scenes, ted-ed never fails to deliver.
this is why i like watching ted ed in science class
We don't say it doesn't mean we don't appreciate ;)
I was more entranced with the music! Hang drums are a delight to listen! :)
I've not even watched and "thumbs up'ed" this comment. I've just come expect quality from TED-ed.
I completely agree with ya!
love that the TED man has a mask.
Same
Lol same here. It made me giggle
Can someone please tell me why some Trump supporters don't wear masks? I really don't get it
Some people, even some who aren’t in support of specific political figures, have fallen prey to misinformation and believe the virus is not very dangerous. They may believe the measures taken to prevent the spread are unnecessary. They may believe the virus does not spread very easily, or that it is no more dangerous than the common cold. Others may feel their rights are being taken by the quarantine and act against guidelines in protest.
Roseblossom9029 I think that on top of mixed information, the people who are protesting haven’t had anyone they know get it or die from it. If they did they wouldn’t be out endangering people. It’s effecting certain groups of people and not others and so the groups that aren’t being effected (apparently trump supporters) just aren’t listening because it doesn’t effect them 🤷🏾♀️
This is why not only the clinicians but scientists and researchers are also equally essential. If one doctor can treat 10 patients, then 1 scientist can potentially save millions, and if we are to win this fight, a vaccine is absolutely critical.
And politicians, can help too. But some of them took this pandemic just like their circus ball :P
most people when they recieved the covid vaccine were then infected after
I really appreciate that TED ED is making these video during this difficult time...thank you for keeping us entertain and knowledgeable
My mum is a nurse for the elderly and someone at her work got covid, she has to get tested today so she’s really scared. We’re watching these so we’re more informed and she’s less scared
Hope she's alright?
I think it's so creative that the Ted-Ed guy has a mask.
I'm aspiring to be a doctor and i am actually studying about PCR and stuffs.I can't believe that TED-Ed is helping me achieving success to become a doctor too. THANKS TED-Ed.
Wow
that's amazing! keep going and don't give up
@@laur1828 thank you 4 your support 😀

I feel kind of proud that I chose this line of work to do. PCR can be time consuming but when you receive the correct AGE readings, sometimes you feel happy but sad at the same time because yes, you’re getting that result but no, this person has the virus. It’s emotionally draining
woah, i'd never thought of that before. that is so incredibly bittersweet! thank you for all your help though :) we appreciate it
This is the most comprehensive knowledge stored in a 5-minute video explaining testing with beautiful illustrations. I watch all Ted-ed videos and this one is certainly one of the best.
Video: *mentions PCR*
Me: *starts humming the PCR song*
PCR song?

Shout out to our Medical Laboratory Scientist who actually performs these tests within the lab!
The lab is the hidden hero of this pandemic! 👩🏻🔬
yes!
When Singapore gets mentioned in a video in a positive way I always feel unecessarily happy/ proud HAHAH anyways thank you TED-ED for everything you've done to keep us well informed and entertained!
lion city pride
It's the Singapore Spirit in us
material, illustration, animation and her voice help us give complete attention and actually understand everything.
how you can make such a stressful, chaotic situation look so beautiful amazes me
Can I say how CUTE the animation of the guy getting his blood drawn was? I love his little wince each time they stuck him with the needle. Cutest thing I've seen all day :)
Stay safe and healthy out there everyone!
You too bud

Everyone: Let’s not wear masks and stuff the bars!!!

That staring music is so relaxing 😌
This is one of the most amazing informative animations I've ever seen. Keep doing what you're doing.
meanwhile, here in America we'd rather wait on the wind of god to blow the virus away...
Or natural selection. Whichever comes first.
In America we have been producing the majority of the PCR tests
@@tuckerstewart5138 then why aren't we using them?
@@tuckerstewart5138 The United States is 39th in the world for tests per capita and your president thinks testing is "overrated"

I'm in awe with every TED-ED video ever. All of them have fluid visuals, meticulous attention to details, a soothing voice explaining a complicated topic with ease and care and so much more dedication that goes behind every short video.
And even from a little before the TED-ED man started wearing a mask, I think all of the videos were made from home?
Think about that!
Kudos for everything, TED-ED
Wow, providing the correct knowledge in these tough times is just wonderful!
As always Astounding graphics and narration. Thanks For your effort!
I really appreciate it.
I'm a med students. Instead of the professors, you're generating interest in me. Thank you so much TED ED❤️❤️
What i honor is the content and the presentation ,its on another level
such a fan of yours
amazing content and animation, as always. That is why we love TED-Ed.
Very well done! I do the PCR testing at the lab. We also have the rapid test that delivers results within 1 hour but it's reserved for stats only.
thank you for making these kinds of videos during this crisis. Makes a lil bit of a calm amongst this storm
Thank you for the video. And the hardwork.
Great Video. I learned so many new things!!
Thanks TED-Ed we appreciate this content it is highly educational!
Nice video. Well prepared and informative
The beauty of UA-cam is I can go back to a video if I didn't understand it fully yet.
Thank you so much for this I really am interested in this virus and your new videos make my curiosity bigger I love your videos and I always learn a lot from them.
this seems very complicated. cheers to all the professionals who make it possible!
Fantastic video! Very informative - great work!! 😁 😁
I definitely needed this video thanks Ted ed
Very informative and well made video.
Love the subtle animation details like how the guy flinches when the needle gets stuck in him to draw his blood out.
Lov the content!! So much nicee info👍🏻👍🏻
How do y’all make these animations?!? They are so well made and fluid.
I JUST LOVE THE INTRO IN WHICH THE PERSON IS WEARING MASK. BEST.
Wow, the animation on this video is just brilliant
Much needed video :)
I appreciate the hang drum bgm
Great video, as always, I will SPREAD it to the masses
Wow crazy how this is posted right after I was having a panic attack about getting tested. My job is making it mandatory to do so but the whole long qtip shoved in my nasal cavity sounds overwhelming
I’m right there with you!
It's just a little weird/uncomfortable, and then it's over fast. Your eye will water a little afterwards. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be 😊
Sonja thanks!
Love the animation. Keep it up.
Good information ,Ted ed keep going
I love the new intro keeping up with the time and being creative. Also, a good reminder.

so proud to be a singaporean - Singapore might be small but we are mighty ♥️ thank you for sharing this TED-Ed!
I am from Singapore and I am so proud of our biologist and healthcare workers. Aside from our migrant worker cluster which is getting 500+ cases a day, we only have 1-2 cases in the community. However this is during lockdown, any wrong step and we are back to square one
Glad you're okay in Singapore hope you guys stay well and safe
I love this video so much.
Yay!!! Thanks for the videos guys. It helps us to kill boredom.
Good to watch the video from tedex again. Thank you 😘

My high school biology teacher made me watch this. Yea, my teacher is a great one.
I simply love the way that how accurate and profound in knowledge videos team TED make... I mean these are the things take years to get by formal education process... And you can be a proficient here by just watching a video several times alongwith research on it... love you team TED...❤
It's refreshing to see SARS-CoV-2 specifically covered by TED-Ed.
Kudos to those who spent time and showed dedication to relay education on this topic.
Very interesting and informative
Hey TED-ed, here's to you choosing a voice over from someone with the word 'cell' in their name. Am I wright or what?! Absolutely pun-derful!
Also, be prepared to be used in EVERY biomed class. Wonderful video!
I am a TED ED fan... and inspired to watch TED ED wearing a mask .Well, stay safe TED ED and keep us teaching... 😍 I am eagerly waiting for a new animated enjoyable lesson...
Ugh why even test you can clearly see that they are literally carrying it like a balloon SMH 🤦♀️
😂
Very cool, I just got tested this morning
I think this is a good video for someone who has somewhat of a background in general biology, but not comprehensive for the general public. As a stem major, I’m working toward getting science out to people in ways that make it simple for them to understand. I think sometimes the science community has trouble getting across new discoveries and research.
Differences in costs, sensibility, specificity and result-time would also be interesting information.
I love this woman's voice for some reason
The animators as always did a great job
Mr.Ted has a mask. What a responsible citizen. Nice work ted
So good to see a informative video about covid-19 from TED-ED
