A Quick Tour of Northern California Farmland!

  • We're going to take a quick tour of Northern California farmland because I want to update you on the growth stages of our rice. In order to do that I'll pull a rice plant from our earliest seeded rice field and a plant from our last seeded field. This will give us a great side-by-side comparison.
In order to get from these two fields we'll need to drive through the county which will give me the opportunity to show you the diversity of agriculture in Northern California. We'll pass by corn fields, sunflowers, almond orchards, tomatoes and, of course, rice!
Also I want to show you a Killdeer (bird) nest with newly hatched eggs. I'll explain how adult Killdeer use the broken wing act to lure predators away from their nests and hatchlings.

Lovely rice fields. Such even fertilization! I love when the rice fields look like giant, glorious lawns. The smoke has been bad and my asthma has been flaring up, but luckily we finally got an air conditioner and retired the water cooler. Not only are we much cooler and more comfortable, but the indoor air quality is better, too.

Hey Matt! Love that you put a cone by the Killdeer nest! Your drone footage was gorgeous. My son lives in Yuba City and I always have to go up to the Sutter Buttes when I am down visiting. It's such a unique place. The "World's Smallest Mountain Range"! Thanks for another great video!🚜🌾☀️⛰

There's a machine shop called Sweco in Sutter and I love picking up parts or get hydraulic rams repaired there because it's such a beautiful drive alongside the Buttes. It's just a beautiful addition to an otherwise flat skyline in the middle of the northern Sacramento Valley. Have a great week, Bill!

Beautiful video Matt! I loved seeing the Killdeer too. Don't seem to have them around here in Sonoma County, at least not where I'm living. Glad you helped protect that nest. I liked seeing the progress of the rice. I'm learning more about rice farming than I ever thought I would. What a wonderful diversity of crop lines near your "4 corners" Matthew. Healthy looking crops at that. Very interesting to see such rapid plant development during approximately 21 day growth steps! Beautifully green fields.

Could you please talk about crop rotation? How do you handle that with rice? Do you rotate every year? What crop do you as a rice farmer follow for best results? Or do you rotate at all? If not, how and why? If you do, what crop works well following rice? etc.

The variety of crops grown in your area is interesting. How do farmers determine what is planted? Are there slight differences in soil, topography, or is it something else like family traditions? I'm sure economic conditions influence what is planted, but it must be expensive to switch from corn to tomatoes. Is there a benefit to the soil when you change crops? Do some farmers grow different crops at the same time (as if the equipment wasn't expensive enough!). It seems like the ability to stagger planting and harvesting dates might be useful.
Really interesting and well produced videos.

Will the difference in plant growth between the two fields make harvesting a little more manageable? Not all fields will be ready to harvest at the same time?

    • @Ricefarmingtv
      @Ricefarmingtv  6 років тому

Yes, Steve you're right. Come harvest we will stagger the cutting of fields. We don't want everything getting ripe at the same time and risk the rice kernels drying too much in the field. They can shatter as they're processed through the combine if they're too dry and brittle. Also on the planting side we just can prepare every field at the same time for seeding. So naturally our plant dates are staggered based on our efficiency and horsepower during the spring.

Tractors I'm pretty indifferent between John Deere and Case. We have a fleet of Case tractors and they do well and are slightly cheaper. Harvest combines we prefer Claas Lexions because of their dual rotor separating systems. Case and newer JD combines have single rotors.

I'd like to dedicate an episode to California grown corn. Never can find the guy though. Eventually I will and I'll let you know. Just something to think about, but I have seen many drone pilots prefer to hand launch/catch their drones to avoid the dust storm kicked up if you launch/land directly off a dirt road or field.

Fires and water. The two most pressing concerns facing our wonderful state. Both are directly related to climate change.

Big topics. Our perspective regarding water, being in a water rich part of the state with winter rainfall and spring/summer snow melt, we need more storage. We need to invest in our state's water infrastructure so we don't lose the water during the winter when we desperately need it in the summer. How to address climate change is the million dollar question though.

Getting off dependency on fossil fuels is the million dollar answer.

Agreed. That's the big ticket. These oil rich counties, refineries and and fuel companies are just making too much money. Not sure what is going to make them pivot in the speed that's required to reverse course on the damaged caused.

ya... killdeer are probably one of the most inconvenient birds there is...they tend to nest in the worst places, and if i didn't know that was in California that's as flat as the Canadian prairies

Further proof that folks living in farmland need people up high to pull strings for us down low. We don't siendhalf of much time coordinating in screens. If ever. We don't have an introduction to whatever doors get is into recording studios or that culture's ladder. It doesn't warrant huge hate filled donuts. We need a business upgrade down here in the folk world, please? Start at flip flops and sweats sports wear.
