I just upgraded from a Pixel 4a 5G, and it does need to be said that the Pixel 8a's bezels are comparatively humongous *and* less symmetrical than the 4a 5G's. I don't know how but Google managed to make their phones both more expensive while feeling cheaper.
@@ikt32 also the 4a 5g was the more expensive updated version of the 4a and therefore launched at the exact same price as the 8a lmao, so the only downgrade is 3% screen to body ratio but everything else is an upgrade.
Any chance we can get a long term Pixel Fold review? I'd love to hear your experiences with general reliability, repair availability, software enhancements, etc. And thank you for always providing the best in depth glimpses into tech!
@onthefence928 okay. I will. This will be a little long because it's a review, just FYI Do not buy this phone right now. Even though I love Pixel phones, and folding phones. And even though I'm using the pixel phone when I also have a pixel 7 pro I could be using as my daily driver. I came from using a z fold 2. Before this Samsung, I was using pixel phones and I still kept a pixel phone as a backup while using it. I love the big screen of folding phones. The outer screen of the fold 2 was garbage. Too slim to do most things on it. The transition to the pixel fold was a mix of good and bad. The outer screen is excellent. It's closer to the 18:9 aspect ratio that phones had for several years. I think all phones should have this aspect ratio. Most are a taller 20:9. It's unnecessary height. Most videos are 16:9 and 18:9 allows you room for notifications at the top and navigation at the bottom. But although the outer screen of this phone is great, the problem is the inner screen. The inner screen of the Pixel fold is the same size as Samsung's current folds. It only opens in a different orientation. There's nothing wrong with the crease. It's as deep as a z fold but wider so it's much smoother to swipe over. The problem is the orientation. I thought I would love a landscape orientation over portrait orientation so it could be more like a tablet or computer. But most apps were never optimized for this aspect ratio. And they can't be optimized for landscape orientation. You typically get a 16:9 aspect ratio app unless you force it to widescreen. You're actually getting a shorter app than on the outside screen because the outside screen is taller. Internet browsers, maps, and native Google apps are the only ones that can properly take advantage of this screen. Forcing an app to fill the screen causes glitches and is not a good experience. Other apps can't take advantage of the landscape orientation because they would have to do a major overhaul of the app. And developers don't have the motivation to do that. Even Google has made their search results on computer and tablet browsers to mimic what you get on a mobile phones by making the search results slimmer. One thing that might improve your experience on the pixel fold is to turn it to landscape orientation once you unfold the phone. You can lock the outside screen to portrait orientation and leave the inside screen unlocked separately. But if you're like me, you don't like an unlocked screen orientation because you will get unintentional changing when you tilt your phone. At one point you could lock the inner screen to portrait orientation, but it will now automatically default back to locked landscape once you've used the phone closed and then open it. But even still, if you put the inner screen in portrait orientation, it's not as good a z fold on portrait because they have optimized the apps. Like with Facebook putting all of the menu buttons on the side of the screen and allowing you more vertical scrolling on the rest of the screen. Even though there's this close working relationship with Samsung and Google, they haven't ported over these optimized apps to the pixel fold. And then you have what was the biggest complaint about this phone when it first came out: The bezels. After you use this phone, you will find the bezels to be the least of your concerns. They completely disappear from your periphery. If you've ever used a tablet, laptop, or computer, you've had bezels, and those bezels were bigger than what you get on this phone's inner screen. But sure, it would be nicer if those bezels weren't there. It's simply not the issue It was made out to be in the beginning. I guarantee that's why Michael Fisher has moved back to the pixel fold. But lastly, we need to talk about the cameras. The pixel fold has solid pixel photos. But I was incredibly disappointed. For s specific reason. A plus of the folding phones is being able to use the main cameras for selfies and video. I was a bit devastated when I tried using this setup to take a selfie on a lit up city street at night. It's way too dark even with night sight. I get better selfies from the selfie camera of my pixel 7 pro than I do on the main cameras of the pixel fold. Video is barely any better on the main cameras of the pixel folds than they are of the selfie camera on the pixel 7 pro, if any. My z fold 2 offered such an upgrade when using the outer cameras versus typical selfie cameras. The selfies of a Samsung fold with the main cameras were much better than what you got from the selfie cameras of an S Ultra. You simply don't get this benefit with the pixel fold. One bonus niche scenario I'll talk about is multitasking on the Pixel Fold. You'll rarely ever use it, but it's great when you have your phone in a holder in your car and you can have your music app open on one half the screen while navigating on the other half of the screen. It works much better on the pixel fold than a Samsung fold because on the Samsung you're getting two slim versions of the app and they don't work good, just like the outer screen. In conclusion, unless you get a really good price on this phone and you're willing to work with its quirks, I would definitely wait for the second iteration of this phone that should come out in October.
I moved back to Android after almost a decade with iPhone... Why? The pixl 8... It's what I always dreamed what android should be. Not only does it work great with 3rd party hardware, but 7 years of updates? I was sold. The stock android 14 made it easy to transition as well. I changed from google assistant to Gemini AI a few weeks ago... not happy with it, now I cant tell it to interact with google home and manage my smarthome. hope they fix it soon
The magic is the rounded corners. This has been Apple's secret on the iPhone's - they have a beautiful corner radius which is naturally appealing to humans. And Google copied that on the 8a to great effect.
I hated how finicky the screen is on the Pixel 8. It often just didn't respond to touch. I picked up an S24+ as soon as it was available. And I've been super happy with it.
I did the same swapping foldables. Was on the one plus open for months. Dusted off the pixel fold just to switch things up and I'm on week 2 of being back on it. It drew me back in and drew me back in HARD. So far the pixel 8A looks like a good mid ranger. Plus Gemini is godlike. Thanks for this.
I like my pixel 7a but it's been plagued with Bluetooth problems since I bought it. It makes a sharp glitch sound every time I get a notification if anything is attached to bluetooth
It seems Mr Fisher is still kind of burnt out with the stale phone market. Between pet heath and I’m assuming a breakup (since the girlfriend is not being mentioned any more), I don’t blame him for a little lack of enthusiasm. Hang in there sir
I would go back to Pixel if they just fixed the modem and the background app usage. Both drain the battery way to fast. I have the S24+ and it lasts way longer than the Pixel 8 Pro i had before.
I've bought the 'a' variant pixel since the 4a, but no more. They're not "budget" anymore so I'm just gonna buy the base Pixel on sale from now on staying with the 9.
I watched so many of these videos in anticipation of receiving my Pixel 8a recently. And everything suddenly changed after I used it, before then suddenly trading it in as quickly as I could. I can't stand that they don't allow you to swap the Tab and Back button on the navigation menu. Almost 10 years of muscle memory using the right side for back, which I was able to do on every other Android phone I've used until now. I thought Google would be the best for customisation rather than limiting such a basic feature.
Hot take. Mr. Mobile's videos are better than MKBHDs. I feel like his videos are more comprehensive. Shows real world use and he's more conversational. *Shrug* Mr.M just kills it every video.
Michael is an actual real world user who does relatively normal daily activities with his phones, marques is so far into the techbro lifestyle that his reviews are pretty meaningless imo.

Good fun review ... I'm sporting a Pixel 6a now ... probably going to hold out for a 9a 😛
Another honest review as usual, I like your objective feedbacks without any overly unnecessary harsh bashing...
I like my pixel 7a but it's been plagued with Bluetooth problems since I bought it. It makes a sharp glitch sound every time I get a notification if anything is attached to bluetooth
Good review, thank!
Software is so important for phones as hardware is getting so similar for slab phones
Why is this video only 1080p?
Amazing and straight to the point review as always.
Some radius added to the corners and some saturation added to the colours. Man. You are at a next level when it comes to narration.
It seems Mr Fisher is still kind of burnt out with the stale phone market. Between pet heath and I’m assuming a breakup (since the girlfriend is not being mentioned any more), I don’t blame him for a little lack of enthusiasm.
Hang in there sir
Is the ringtone volume low in this model too? I have a pixel 4a. I can’t hear the phone ring if I am sitting at the next room
We need a review for smart rings ✌️
wait until samsung's get announced. should be announced in a few months
I would go back to Pixel if they just fixed the modem and the background app usage. Both drain the battery way to fast. I have the S24+ and it lasts way longer than the Pixel 8 Pro i had before.
i thought the thumbnail said "8A/10" being a score on how you feel about the phone
Gotta try Waymo next time you head out to SF 🔥
I love your reviews ❤❤❤❤
Flagship $1200 phones are making less and less sense.
It's refreshing to see pixel positive reviews.
Seems like there's always doom and gloom in the media surrounding pixels.
You need to come to Pittsburgh!
Not interested in Pixel 8A but will watch because it is Mr Mobile
The 8a's internal mic sounds appalling. Ive noticed it on other reviewer clips as well.
Hot take. Mr. Mobile's videos are better than MKBHDs. I feel like his videos are more comprehensive. Shows real world use and he's more conversational. *Shrug* Mr.M just kills it every video.
Mkbhd just grew out of his shoes. Don't watch his videos anymore because I assume he's not legit anymore
Michael is an actual real world user who does relatively normal daily activities with his phones, marques is so far into the techbro lifestyle that his reviews are pretty meaningless imo.
People are always trying to create competition between 2 people or more that basically talk about the same thing. They're both good! How about that.
As always, a pleasure to watch. Bonus for kitty interference.
Rocking the Atoms I see…👍🏾
That opening scene, you were in the Redwoods. Where?
Your bored face while shooting the S24 is a whole MOOD 😂
How come you never reviewed the OnePlus 12?
You ever think about auditioning for an alternate Tony stark?
I can totally see that!
I'm still using my pixel 2XL and can't decide which one is best to upgrade 😔 Any suggestions Google Pixel gang? 😇
I have the p6 p7 and p8 all are great choices
Google pixel 8 is a very good choice
Why in every review of pixel phones the Google search bar is always at the bottom of the screen please tell me by now you can move it or even remove it
The google watch for me is the best looking watch ever in my opinion. Love it!!
Why does the screen look like it has lines running down?
Did you experience any thermal issues with the phone? I've read complaints of the Pixel 8 overheating...
The best and wisest tech youtuber on the planet ❤
Will the magic eraser feature for video come to the pixel 6 Pro?
what about the heating problem which turns off the flash while recording??
I hate how the black color is the only one that gets 256gb of storage, seriously what a middle finger to pixel users
I was wondering if there was going to be a phone review somewhere in there
Another awesome Phone/tech video. Love this channel. Mr Mobile. You made me switch to Samsung and Android for life. You are one of my favorite youtubers out there. Keep up the good work
How is heating of TENSOR with the US summer sun?
Which has the better picture/video quality, the Pixel 8a, or Nothing phone 2a?
