I had hormonal cystic acne for years and tried so many products and diet changes, but in the end getting hormone meds for acne helped me. Of course, it's best to talk to your doctor about what will work for you. I can relate to the struggle of hormonal acne though, it's so difficult to feel confidence sometimes

I can totally relate to coming off of the pill because of how it was affecting my hormones and mental health. Best decision ever! Persevere and push through the side affects, it took a good few months for my skin and everything else to normalise.

Well, I have been 30 years in the pill, still am ....and I don't understand any of all the symptoms you are writing here. My mental health is bad because we are living in a mad world with mad people everywhere and my hormons are a mess because I'm 51 ...
But when I was younger ....my God , I didn't even could tell I was taking the pill. No side effects to me . Maybe if you drink alcohol or smoke is the real problem . I don't do or did any of them .

I started the pill at 25 yrs old. It made me very paranoid and crazy. After few months my doctor said i had depression. I was very very sad but i had the reflex of stopping the pill. And the craziness went away. I tried even the lightest pills, they all do this to me. It is something that they dont tell you about. And i cannot believe how we can step on the moon today but care so poorly about women mental health and not improving their birth control pill choices. Anyway, im glad you are feelibg better ❤

It's funny, my mood improves when I go back on the pill. I take antidepressants but I noticed a huge improvement when I went back on the pill too. I also had really severe perinatal depression when pregnant with both my boys, but as soon as those kids were cut out, I felt amazing. Hormones can super affect your mood!

I had the same mental health issues on the pill (had been on for 10 years) and decided to come off of it about 6 years ago, and had massive acne issues, my weight/boobs dropped, and half my hair fell out for months. It was really hard. Because of the massive drop in estrogen, the collagen and elasticity in my skin took a hit-my face thinned out and I aged years like overnight. So just be prepared for that. It also took about 9 months for my hormones to catch up and for me to get a regular period back. The side effects are tough, but it’s worth it in the end; my mental health is sooo much better now. I highly recommend getting on a probiotic like Seed, which greatly improved my gut health and thus serotonin and hormone levels. I just wish doctors would help inform their female patients better about the long term effects of being the pill-it can be really damaging for some of us. I wish I had never gone on it in the first place. My copper IUD I replaced it with was 💯 a better option. Good luck! 👍🏻

The pill does affect a lot more than you'd think. For me personally, I also had really flat-negative mood and loss of libido. I came off it nearly 4 years ago and I would say it took a good 2-3 years for my cycle to be normal again (with all the symptoms to be expected throughout your cycle). I struggled with my skin too but I am also now learning that a lot of it is tied to food intolerances. Smell is also affected by taking hormonal BC and I noticed that myself too. There is actually quite a bit of research on how the pill changes aspects of perception, from facial attractiveness, to perception of trustworthiness of others, to which smells you prefer. There is also a big study that looked at how satisfied women in longterm relationships are with their partner when they were on the pill at first and then came off it during the relationships (compared to women who never were on it and women that stayed on it). There's a huge drop in satisfaction in the first group (something I could also relate to in my own life, unfortunately).

I was on Yasmin for maybe a month or more before I started noticing some really awful and weird things. I had hair loss at the temples, boobs were swollen constantly with one much bigger than the other, I couldn't do any of my regular exercise without feeling out of breath, no sex drive whatsoever and I started to feel really paranoid and depressed for no reason. My doctor told me to hold out and my body might adjust. I tried to do that for I think 2 and a half months before I just couldn't take it anymore. Went back, told her I was convinced it was the pill doing it to me, she referred me to a gyno. Gyno knew exactly what I was talking about as soon as I mentioned it. She told me that any hormonal birth control was likely to have a similar effect on me and recommended the copper (non-hormonal IUD). It took a few months for all the hormones to leave my system fully but after that transition I felt like myself again. Got the copper IUD, have used that birth control method for 6+ years and I highly recommend it to anyone who is having a negative experience with hormonal birth control.

Totally with you on the mood changes after I went off the pill. I was on it for four years and eventually decided I didn’t want to be on it for personal reasons (mainly wanting my periods to happen naturally) and I could not believe how “flat” I really was feeling - didn’t even realize it until the peaks and valleys of my mood came back! I used to tear up at little cute things, get excited about imagining something cool or just feel creative for no reason - all of that came back and I felt SO GOOD. I would say it took about a year for my cycle to stabilize and my skin to even out, definitely recommend getting a period tracker app to help with monitoring that (I use clue). I still get hormonal break outs (neck and jawline and chest, boo) when I’m ovulating or during PMS, but they are luckily small for me. I will not go back on any kind of hormonal BC unless for medical reasons, it was scary to me how I felt like I was a different person and had forgotten certain feelings until I came off it!

My coming off the pill story is this: my mood became so much more stable and my skin became really happy. I had more energy too. I will NEVER go back on the pill. But I will say it took a while to fully regulate my hormones, but it's worth it imo.

Karima, you are not alone. I have PCOS and I just got off the pill last month for the same reasons. I was trying so hard, but I was not myself, I was negative and moody. So I went to the doctor and instead of them questioning the pill, she prescribed me depression meds. I have had annoying cystic acne along my jawline but I’ve also been wearing a mask everyday so I think it’s hormones and maskne. 😩 but I feel better so far and am going to be patient. Keep us updated with your journey please? It helps me to know I’m not alone and have also done some research online of people who have come off the pill’s experiences. Love you so much!!! I wish you the best!

I started the pill when I was 15 and I took it for almost 10 years. I stopped not only because of the extreme mood swings, but also because of my gut health issues it didn't make sense as a birth control for me anymore. I couldn't rely on it to work properly and it was just too expensive for that and unnecessary. not to mention some risks that come with taking it. So I stopped about 5 years ago(I turned 29 last week), and I feel much better. yes I have a lot of hormonal acne (had acne before but not that deep and inflamed under the skin, also I think it is caused from other health issues I have, which I am currently figuring out) but I feel a lot better and kind of relieved.
The only thing that really bothers me since I stopped is the period pain....it is no joke 😭
It is a big decision not only coming off but also starting it. I think people should talk more about it. It has a huge impact on the body and you should be careful. I think a lot of people underestimate it, because it is so convenient and easy.

I totally hear you! My experience is quite similar except that I still take it (I'm also 29). I couldn't deal with the hormonal acne and my doctors recommended me to stay on it. However I resent the little information available regarding its side effects and the dissmisive attitude towards those effects on us women. Especially from doctors. I feel like there's no intention of ever trying to develop a different treatment or even trying to work out how to deal with the its numerous and dangerous side effects.

Could I try recommend you try going to the gym or a gentle run when you’re experiencing pain? I noticed that very rarely (lucky) when I am having weird issues with my period exercise alleviates the pain. Just a little gentle movement. Not a doctor but thought I’d share some of my experiences though I have never had real cramps in my life.

@@kat284 thanks, yeah I tried. I work out twice a week. the last time it was so bad I could barely stand up or move. took some painkillers (ibuprofen), waited for them to work and went to yoga class later that day. same thing the next day. I noticed a period cup seems to help a little bit...it's not every month but every other month for the first 2-3 days. the only thing that really helped so far is ibuprofen :/

Have you tried taking fish oil? The period pain I had felt like... I was being stabbed and the knife broke in me. One of the things I tried that actually worked was taking fish oil everyday. The pain isn't totally gone but now it's just an annoying presence instead of making me want to cry.

I've been blending my concealer that way too! Glad to see people who are better at makeup do that too 😂 I was really irritable on a regular dose pill, but when I switched to a low dose pill it fixed everything up. I went off the pill for a year and went back on at the start of this year - the most noticeable issue I have on my current pill is that I retain a lot more water on it and it's harder to get defined abs, plus my periods hurt a lot less. I was really surprised at the lack of a mood change, I really expected to feel a difference! But then again 2020 itself is a whole mood...

I stopped the pill about 2 years ago and I had the exact same skin condition changes. It took about 18 months for the acne to subside and it's still not all gone but it's not as severe now. It took a lot of trial and error to figure out how to take care of my new skin but I have a sustainable routine now that i am happy with. I feel for you. • @CookieDr007

OMG love this entire video! You're not alone and there's data to support everything you are going through. I went off the pill 4yrs ago after being on it for about 10+ years (hubs got a vasectomy🙌) ---since I get estrogen withdrawal migraines that are magnified by the pill I was excited. I will say I had to add back BHA in the AM and aha at dinner time plus retinA before bed ie ALL the exfoliants to really hammer down hormonal acne. On the pill I felt the fog or a disconnect in what I was really feeling vs what I was emoting -- like why am I crying I'm not actually upset?? It's a very odd feeling to not feel in control of your emotions. Being off the pill made my migraines less intense/happen at all, it's made my mood more stabilized, libido everything and yes I definitely can smell myself more -- I DIED laughing --like I even know when I'm about 2-3 days before my menstrual cycle starts it's crazy. I will say it took time for my cycle to normalize (I use an app to track so I have the data every yr for my OB/gyn appt). But also something to consider is your age, if you're over 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 etc there's a lot of age related changes at play during those important times in addition to hormone changes 👍👍

I relate SO MUCH to your feelings of being on the pill. I was on it for two years and didn’t realise how much it was affecting me. I was so anxious and depressed, but also had these periods where I just felt so numb and time didn’t exist or was crawling by so slowly but also moving so fast...it was horrible. And once I came off it it was like the fog lifted and I’ve never looked back. Not to give unsolicited advice, but in my case I was very worried about not being on hormonal birth control, so I desperately typed “natural birth control” into google not expecting to find anything...but it really paid off because I found out about Fertility Awareness Methods, tracking my own cycles with morning temps and cervical fluid observations. I’ve been using that ever since for 3 years. It’s changed my life. I’m so in tune with my body, my cycle and my fertility and I feel blessed to have this body literacy. I’m atheist too by the way, so just want to make it clear that in my case I’m not using it for religious reasons (although many do). There is tonnes of scientific research to back it up, but of course no one profits when women have the knowledge that allows them to track their own ovulation, so they try to discredit it and sell you a pill or a condom instead. Anyway, I highly recommend looking into it as an option! Femmehead on UA-cam has some wonderfully informative videos on it, and she’s actually a Fertility Awareness coach now.

OMG I relate so hard to the hormonal breakouts. I started noticing I was breaking out on my forehead, somewhere I have absolutely never broken out in my life, and the arrival of these breakouts coincides with my hormonal IUD expiring. I haven't been able to get it replaced due to the pandemic situation so I'm freaking out a bit. I have never in my life been prone to breakouts, even before I was on birth control of any kind, it is rare that I ever get a blemish so this is new territory that I am not keen to tread. This week I noticed some breakouts starting along my jaw too, ugh... Your hair looks amazing! Those highlights really are the perfect color. I can't wait to get a haircut. Salons just recently started opening where I live so it is hard to get an appointment.

I stopped taking the pill 6 years ago and my skin is still not clear. Before, I never had a single pimple even in puberty because I started taking the pill rather young due to massive menstrual cramps. After almost 10 years of taking the pill and several mental issues I decided to stop taking it to see were it goes. My skin went to shits and my cramps came back as worse as they were before BUT IT IS STILL TOTALLY WORTH IT. It’s been 6 years and though I do have my moments were I miss my clear skin and I have horrible menstrual pain, STILL I feel so much better without the added hormones. I feel so much more at peace with myself and I love love love to really have a cycle. I actually enjoy seeing the changes in my body throughout the month and being in sync with it. Also, good protection is possible even without the pill. With a regular cycle, learning the signs of it and tracking them (I use an app called Clue) it is totally possible to avoid pregnancy when using condoms (correctly) at the right times. So take it from a long time pill taker and sideeffects sufferer like me: it truely can be totally worth it, pimples and all, though it is of course a very personal choice that is not to be taken lightly. ❤️

But it's never greasy. It's never flat. It's always soft, voluminous, bouncy and shiny. It's my new superpower and I'm SO happy with it! If I came off it i have no doubts my greasy greasy roots would be back within a week!

The only thing that happened when I ran out of my BC (couldn't get in to see a doc and get a new Rx) is my horrific periods came back with a vengeance I was full on out of commission for almost an entire week in bed, can't move I'm in so much pain and throwing up because of it. "Coming off the pill" is not glamorous for everyone. If it makes you personally feel better, go for it. For me, I can't live without it. Just throwing this out there because I haven't seen an opposing experience in the comments yet and I don't want people to get only one side of things.

100%. I had to cut some stuff out of the video for brevity but the pill served me for many years and I don't wish to demonise it. It helps MANY! xx

I am that opposing opinion. I have endometriosis that makes me feel like jumping off a building and that’s not really all that much of an exaggeration. I don’t miss the week of lying on the floor, throwing up for seven days and constantly missing work because of it. I had a vacation where I couldn’t even enjoy because of a week in hospital, throwing up and mega dehydration.

My sister had the same experience with you but for me it was a life saver! My period cramps and PMS were so much better and my acne (face and body) went away! (I had blood tests before and my doctor prescribed me the right pill for acne purposes, the combinations of hormones are different so if you're struggling with acne talk to your doctor first, it will help a lot!). However, after 10 years of taking it and a round of Accutane I decided to go off it because it seemed scary to me to not let my body at least try to regulate its hormones on its own hahah. Few months in now and I feel the same apart from the period cramps that came back with a vengeance hahah. Good luck to anyone and if you're feeling like your doctor is not paying attention to what you say you're feeling then change them if possible! xx

Oh my God! Queen Karima I've had the same experience with birth control! I decided about a year ago to stop the pill because I struggled with UTI's a lot since becoming sexually active. I read a lot on how hormones influence your mood too and I didn't want to continue the pill. I change to a non hormonal birth control (IUD) and my skin freaked out. I noticed a lot of improvement on my mood and overall health and I didn't suffered from UTI's anymore yeah! And like you I have a very acute sense of smell and I notice a difference in my scent and I didn't like it at first 😂 now I'm used to it. My skin broke out in the same area, jawline cheeks and chin (and my pores have never been the same 😭) it has calmed down a bit but I regret my perfect skin I had when on the pill. You can't have it all 😅 I see a dermatologist and I'm hopeful it will get better. Best wishes for your new skin journey ! Love you ! 😍

Hormones are crazy! It's fascinating how different everyone is. I have PMDD, hormonal birth control and SSRIs are literally my saving grace. Omg I am breaking out so badly these days, I never used to get break outs even in my teens but since I came off the pill LAST year my skin has never recovered, they come and go but this month is the worst it’s ever been I don’t know if it’s the heat, the mask wearing, the hormone imbalance or all of the above, I’ve tried a few cleansers but nothings helped, I’ve never been conscious about my skin but now it’s affecting my mood and I notice all my spots/skin bumps so much more , I’ve try all sort of diff spot treatments but the spots are still going strong 😖 xx I always love your make up looks gorgeous as always, so effortless and natural ish ❤️🙈

So interesting that my mood in general improved when I went on the pill. Basically, I got the jackpot of pill side effects. The lighter periods which in turn meant lighter (almost no) cramps, mood swings weren't as high or low, my boobs slightly subtly turned into a nicer shape, my skin cleared uppppp! I was fighting a bit of (I think) fungal acne but that was obliterated once I went on the pill as well as my skin stopped being overly oil and just in general became so easy to manage.
Didn't actually notice my mood improved at first but looking back now, I definitely see a difference between pre-pill me and on-pill me!

I was on the pill for about 7 years and when I came off it I felt so much better. I felt the same feelings, flat, not myself, no energy or motivation. I also hated the constant bloat. No matter how much I exercised I wouldn’t lose body fat or my bloated waist. I lost it all within 10 days without changing anything.

I had been on a few different types of birth control pills when I was 19-23 (trying to find one that didn’t make me turn into a different person the week-week and half before my period). I remember bursting into tears talking to my nurse practitioner about how bad I felt as she wrote me a prescription for another pill. Then, I got the IUD (Kyleena). Still has hormones, but very low dose that is localized and doesn’t infiltrate into my blood stream. I requested the copper IUD, but my doctor didn’t recommend it for me since I hadn’t had a pregnancy before (apparently copper IUDs are slightly larger and are not always compatible with people who have not had pregnancies thus having smaller uteruses). I didn’t have my period for the first year I had my IUD and it was so nice! Now, my periods are so lite that I don’t even need tampons any more. However, I still get PMS symptoms, but it’s not nearly as bad as it used to be (it’s a combo of hormones and depression and anxiety, so hard to determine the culprit of the PMS symptoms). The IUD has worked for me. It doesn’t work for everyone. If you try it and experience discomfort (besides some cramping the first few days after insertion), take it out! Pain is not normal! Don’t suffer through it, just have it removed. I experience no pain with my IUD, and that’s how it should be. Always talk to a medical professional. Thanks for sharing, Karima!

Hi Karima. This was a wonderful video with great tips. My skin and mood were a whole lot better on the pill. But I had breakouts on my jaw, chin, and neck (where I never used to break out) when I came off the pill too. I chalked that up to coming off it but it kept getting worse over five months. I later realised how sensitive my skin was to the new moisturiser I was using. It stopped a few weeks after I stopped using that moisturiser.
