I’m running a high dex slayer fighter build, with an arming+short sword and cross bow, so I can comfortably loot goblin and clear quest objectives in a timely fashion. I’ve learned to keep a heater tucked away, to swap to when I hear another player, and if discovered, beginning the encounters as a defensive sword & shield fighter, attacking after blocking, often just enough pressure for them anticipate more of the same. I’m slow. It’s not that hard out space me, so when I stow my weapons to catch up and they turn to punish, high equip speed let’s me swap to slayer and start swinging, fast. My agility is rarely more than 18, unarmed movement speed 299 only thanks to +4MS adventures boots, yet stacked action speed and true phys everywhere else means a four hit combo lashes out before they’re out of reach, really jarring anyone without serious PDR or the experience/class to trust they’ll win blow for blow with a no plate fighter. That said, if they stay to throw down from start, I try to win with shield discipline, but assume I’m an easy kite and I shoot for the blitz. Just about everyone who can, takes the bait, and I’m not escaping otherwise. Keep in mind, this has only been viable in the sub 125 lobbies, so the new matchmaking might complicate things, but if it’s a battle of greens, it’s a lot of fun.
oooo the sneaky Slayer with a shield build sounds really really interesting! did you stick with this, or have you been experimenting with other builds since leaving this comment?
I actually think that blocking with buckler + sword does make you move slightly faster than simply running with buckler + sword out, although not as fast as with bare hands. Blocking with buckler makes you move at 90% speed (see weapons page on dark & darker wikia for movement penalties during actions). Shield mastery gives +10% speed when blocking, (90% x 110% = 99%) so you'll be at 99% blocking with buckler. If you have a shield out, you should be at 99% MS + 10 flat ms, compared to 100% MS simply running with sword and shield out. This is faster unless you have 1000 move speed. Fists should still be faster though. Let's say you have the default 300 ms with fists out. With arming sword + buckler, that's 300 - 12 - 20 = 268 ms. You run with 268 ms with your weapons out. With the 2 perks, you block with (268 x .99) + 10 = 275.32 ms, so this is the faster way to run with weapons out, but slower than fists. Keep in mind this won't work with other shields. Only the buckler allows you to retain 90% of your original speed while blocking, all else turns you into turtle. Side note: I've seen Blinn run while guarding with rondel + buckler, that specific case should be slower because rondel doesn't count as a sword under sword mastery. The speed will be 99% compared to simply running with rondel + buckler equipped, although those weapons are light so he still blitzes them like a nightmare goblin 300 - 12 - 10 = 278 with weapons out, x .99 = 275.22 ms during goblin rush
I think the longsword was trying to parry your attack incorrectly. Im not sure, if anyone can correct me please do. Hes doing the whole duck and turn but I think you just need to stand and aim at his weapon right? Or do I have this wrong? Thanks!
Since watching your first few vids about shield fighter I've been rocking lantern shield and sword with slayer and sword mastery and when I block well it's fantastic, but when I fail to block well... not as effective lol
haha that's awesome! does that lantern shield count as a weapon (and therefore activate the layer perk?) -- or are you just dual wielding but without the added bonus from slayer?
@@YourBoyBlinn it counts as far as I'm aware, but it doesn't work with dual wield. I suppose shields don't count as weapons for that perk. I noticed I get slayer buff icon but no dual wield icon
Hello blinn I was wondering if the flanged mace would be better for a shield fighter? I’m currently using the arming sword but I noticed that after blocking with counterattack the flanged mace swings incredibly fast
to me its all about how many swings you can get in between blocks, if you can get 2 hits with the sword you could more damage. however the consistency of blocking 1 attack then swinging once with the mace is kinda nice. also mace has armor pen on top so its waay better at fighting armored players
I have personnally found very hard to swing 2 times with the arming sword, even after block with shield mastery. Often, you will get hit, maybe you can pull it off vs 2 handers?
@@havoxaerthis7904 yeah, vs two-handers you can get a good window for 2 swings with the arming sword, but even still it's dicey! better to go 1-fr-1 in my opinion!
The only time a shield works in solos is maybe sheiks bash. Otherwise action speed, which a lot of top level players utilize, can just make shields unplayable cuz they just get in the way. Edit: of dps
I think other games do a good job at hiding it, making it seem like there's less delay (peaker's advantage in cs and valorant come from this). You can't overcome the speed of light, there's always going to be 100-200 ms delay between when your opponent moves and when you see them move (and vice versa). There are still optimizations to be made elsewhere to minimize delay, but there's always gonna be that baseline.
IMO ~250ms delay between two comps in the same region, on the same server is really not great.. especially for a game that requires the combat precision of DaD (plus the threat of true loss, hah!)
@@itsBenjamon brother, 200 ms is a ping I have when connecting from Russia to someone in the US. I get it that some delay is inevitable, but in the same region it should be barely noticeable, not 200+, that's just crazy.
@Oakenlix you have to add your ping to your opponents ping, and in dark and darker especially, you won't always have the luxury of connecting to a server near you. Some people play this game on 100+ ping
If people were actually good at melee in this game, barbarian would be getting buffed, not nerfed. Big surprise that people suck at melee combat in a ranged meta then beg for the melee only class to get nerfed instead of simply getting better at melee or getting a good shield user frontliner on their team.
Barbs barely got nerfed, just a much needed, slight damage adjustment to the weapons while also reducing their movespeed penalty. Barbarians 1-2 tapping any class at max movespeed is always gonna be an issue. Not everyone uses a shield or is a melee class. Melee combat in this game is almost always a gear check.
I like fighting barbs but i understand that an almost 200 hp guy that can run at almost speed cap and can 2 shot most classes its kinda weird, even as a pdr fighter with shield you end up either dead or chasing what feels like a rogue for the entirety of the map, the problem its not being good or bad at melee the problem is the toxic metas like mosquito rogues or speedy warlocks, in this case speedy barbs. I still like to fight them because they tend to commit and not kite which is i understand that necessesary for some classes or even their intended way but its just boring, obnoxious and frustrating, specially when you are in
@@Drathrin The only gear checking in melee in this game is with daggers. Bardiche is easily dodgable and even more easily blockable. Also very easy to force sour spot hits by face stuffing. 1-2 tapping is an exaggeration too... it's more like 2-4 for squishy classes and 3-7 for pdr. There are fighter build which are far more problematic, but they aren't meta because most fighters prefer to take a ranged option as it's much safer than committing to a melee engagement. Cool... yeah not everyone uses a shield, but if you don't, THAT'S YOUR DECISION. The game is balanced for trios anyways. If you don't take a frontliner on your team in trios that's also your choice. It's a rock paper scissors game you can take full scissors then cry when you get killed by a rock.
@@zaikolebolsh5724 Sprint is faster than rage though... and yeah the combat in this game sucks. Every class is annoying to fight in solos for different reasons. Solos is a bad game mode.

@@Zistac7 we get it, you're a barb main with under 1k hours
