I wish you were in the UK.... You could educate our car dealers in how to properly explain car functions. Thank you for an excellent video, it is very much appreciated👍👌👏
Just a little more details for anyone interested, who may have not used an auto highbeam system before. Most auto high beam systems are controlled by the camera in your rear view mirror. Meaning the car generally has to be equipped with the lane keep assist and other driving features so camera is installed. Then you turn on high beams and high beams will stay on until the camera senses an oncoming light from another car, or even sometimes your own highbeams reflected back due to a road sign. But the camera senses the light and automatically dims them. Once the light passes it will turn them back to high beam. The feature isn't new, but turning it on or off is different for most manufacturers. It's nice to have. And works similar to how any light sensing feature works to auto dim things like your cell phone screen when it dims or brightness based on the light it senses.
Hi Peter, I'm glad to see that you did this tutorial based on my question earlier, but I'm still wondering if you can keep the auto high beam setting in the "on" position even after you have turned the vehicle off. As I said, I find that I need to turn them on every time I get into the vehicle.
Yeah, that's the way they work. I'm not sure why it's set up like that, I can make a case for why they would, but I could also make the case for why they should do it as you suggest. At the end of the day, this is how they decided to make them work, and my job is to do my best to explain it.
Thanks Peter. Very informative! Is it possible to change normal, halogen fog light bulbs into LED ones? My Kia Sportage 2021 EX Premium comes with LED headlights and halogen fog lights and I was wondering if I could swap those fog lights bulbs into LED ones. Thanks!

I thought my headlights were on Auto, but the high beam didn't activate on the dark road this morning. So I pushed the signal lever, and high beam activated, but did not automatically dim. I will check for that AUTO dash indicator, to see if it comes on. 2022 Kona Ultimate I leave the switch on AUTO all the time. The headlights and tail lights activated when the car was started in the dark 6am.
So I threw a cover over the windshield sensor to replicate darkness. I leave Headlights on AUTO. I had to push the signal lever forward to activate Auto Dimming, and upon shutdown and restart, I had to re-activate the Auto Dimming... Should it not maintain that setting as Default? Interesting and Annoying, as I would generally use that, or Turn It Off. This morning, I did push the Signal Lever to activate the Auto Dimming, but I may have played with the Signal Lever too often and turned off the Auto Dim, and left the High-beams on Manual ? I need to experiment tomorrow morning, 6am coffee time. :-)
This is such an unnecessarily complicated system. To me it’s a huge design oversight that the regular headlights option isn’t just next to the “auto” option so you can just toggle between the two without turning you lights completely off or bright lighting someone. It’s so counter intuitive to have a dial set to “auto” but then also have to activate that function with an entirely separate input and have to do it every time you turn the car on.
My 2022 Sportage may have this feature but not sure. My head lights turn on in the day time, sun shining, for about forty two seconds and then turn off. On the Kia Niro you can go in the settings and actually cancel the auto beam completely as well. So you can leave you car in auto lights. I just wish Kia would learn from European car makers and put the lights on when it’s raining and the wipers are running a constant sweep when in auto. In rain on motorways in the day sometimes it’s light enough for the auto lights not to come in, but due to spray it’s better to have the lights on. This is how the best cars from Europe do it, constant wipe in auto and lights come on!
