Lane Keep Assist/Lane Follow Assist EXPLAINED! - Kia Class
Вставка

- Lane Keep Assist and Lane Follow Assist are two technologies that are often misunderstood. Kia vehicles implement this tech in different ways than other vehicles, and it has changed a lot over the past few years. In this video, Peter explains the technology so that you can understand it in full, and enjoy the benefits!

I miss these so much. When I ordered my Kia Sorento PHEV 2 years ago I used to watch these all the time,e
My 2020 Kia e Niro has both systems but I thought that the lane follow assist worked only when using the adaptive cruise control. Now you have got me thinking so will check to see how the car is set up. Thanks for the classes keep them coming because technically is moving at such a pace and it’s nice when it is explained by yourself.
It does I use it everyday
we just bought a 24 Telluride and just loving it especially the lane centring system!
Great and helpful video. I have the 2021 Sorento. My only issues with these features are when they put that snowmelt on the roads(here in the US) it confuses the system thinking it’s road lines. And every time it snows, the front camera gets covered up so the front collision warning shuts down. They should have installed a washer for it.
So what you're describing is the front RADAR plate being blocked by ice, not the camera. The camera is in the windshield, but the error message shows up when the radar plate gets covered in slush. If you wipe it off and re-start the car, it will reset itself and work. Fair point though!
@@BrantfordKia yes. I meant the plate. Funny I kept wiping the camera lol.
2021 seltos has and I love it. I also love the adaptive cruise I do lots of highway driving and it's the best feature couple it up with the assists and it's a dream car.
I agree with you completely. Sometimes I talk about these features and I don't think people realize how much I LOVE these features myself. Thanks for sharing!
Literally the only person on the internet who can explain this thing
I was confused by the two on my 2022 Santa Fe. This cleared it up. Nice detailed explanation.
Awesome! I'm glad this helped! Thanks for watching! We'll have a lot more of these Kia/Hyundai Classes in the coming weeks or months, so feel free to subscribe if you think they'll be helpful!
Great explanation! Thanks to this i now know this functions much better than 3 years ago!
I have 2022 K-5 GI Line. One of the three the owners manuals is over 800 pages. The dealer should absolutely have a class in how to manage all of the electronic controls involved. My salesman has gone over all of it twice now and I still have trouble remembering and or finding all of the gizmos and gadgets associated with operating the vehicle.
Very frustrating---it shouldn't be this hard.
I believe that lane assist is one the most dangerous items fitted to modern cars. I do most of my driving on small country roads & I'm convinced that it will cause serious injury to pedestrians. We should be able to disable it by default.
Oh, I absolutely agree - - I had my first experience with it tonight and if somebody’s working on something on the side of the road, I like to give them a wide berth, but I had to absolutely wrestle the wheel and realized oh I have to notify the car and turn the left blinker on to give somebody a wide birth on my right if they’re on the shoulder
If you have the k5 the button is to the left of the steering wheel next to two other buttons. It’s the middle one and then there’s on your steering wheel shaped like two thirds of a triangle
AHH thanks for info! I really enjoy your videos!! Your videos helped me decide that a 2020 kia forte gtl-ine was the car for me!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
LKAS is an absolute nightmare on 60km roads in the Netherlands... it already tried twice in 4 days to steer my Kia Ceed into oncoming traffic because it's oblivious to these types of roads having a single lane in the middle with pseudo-bike lanes on the sides you are supposed to use with oncoming traffic. Frickin' system keeps resetting it too when I restart the engine too.. looking into some more drastic means to 'fix' this, because I absolutely loathe any kind of autonomous control.. If I wanted GLaDOS to control my car, I'd drive a Valve...
It's amazing and literally not even noticable until you take your hands off the wheel and see it steering itself
Yeah, I have a lot of people who are hesitant about it, but I always tell them to try it for a week and see if you can get used to it. Almost every time, they tell me that it's one of their favourite features! Thanks for sharing your experiences!
What happens when you take your hand off the wheel? Does the car "get mad" at you lol? And if so do you know if the wheel is pressure sensitive, or capacitive?
Very helpful!! Thank you!! Very much enjoy your videos.
Hey Peter I have the 2024 kia seltos xs turbo Is it good to use LFA LKA AND SPEED ASSIST ALL at one time
I love KIA’s LKA. It works well on the highways.
I hate the Keep Assist correcting my steering in the winter months...it wants to correct when I am on icy roads! I need completed control then. How do I keep the beeps but shut off the auto-correct on the steering? I have a 2023 Sportage
Hi Andrea, If you go to ‘setup’ under your main menu & then ‘vehicle’ you can adjust it from “active assist” to “warning only”
Just bought a Kia and was driving home. I was shocked when it centered me. 😂
2024 sportage this works flawlessly
Hows it going my man, how do I get the blind spot monitoring working off my turn signals on my dash, On my 22 Kia Sorento hybrid Ex doesn't give me the option, please help my man
I have a KIA Niro EV. Doesn't lane follow assist drain the battery?
Is this why the AEB light turned on as I was parked behind another car with the car running?
I’ve the 2020/21 Kia E Niro 4+ 🇬🇧 that the top of the range model I don’t have the button you mentioned on the steering wheel, I do have the button on the in our case 🇬🇧 right side of the driver on the dash does that mean that both LKA & LFA are together. I think I can turn the two off or on in the driver preference with the buttons on the steering wheel. However thanks for the explanation as I did wonder what the difference was between the two.
You have Lane Keeping Assist which can be set to ACTIVE assist in your menus in the dash. It's not quite as precise as Lane Follow Assist which is the button on the steering wheel.
How do I find my radio ID so I can set up my Sirius radio subscription ? I can't find it ~
What does the button below the minus sign do ( to the right of the steering wheel icon)
What happens when you are trying to change lanes and you have this feature activated?
I can see this feature being really dangerous. I’ve got a new xcreed and been wondering how to disable it just a simple button. But by rights I think for safety it should be permanently disabled and option to turn on if you wish. During intersection and lane crossing etc over taking or having swerve away from objects in the road or stupid people stepping out in the road this is a concern for me as I can see it auto pulling me back into lane when your trying to avoid hitting objects or pedestrians. I’m surprised no one died by this yet l surprised no one been run over by this yet or hit a cyclist. I bet a lot people been nervous with this on the motorway also. I have never had anyone or anything pull the steeling out of my hands driving over 25 years and this is terrifying as it is. I hope Kia take notes and look into this problem on the next gen-cars
Hi Peter. If I understand things correctly... in the latest (i.e. 2021+ model-year) Kia and Hyundai vehicles, the principle setting for LKA is carried out in the 'Driver Assistance>Lane Safety' sub-category item in the Settings menu. Turning LKA on or off is accomplished by pressing and holding the 'Lane Keeping Assist' button (on right side of steering wheel) when the engine is on. If the engine is restarted, LKA will maintain the last setting.
To turn LFA on or off you use the same 'Lane Keeping Assist' button on the steering wheel, but instead of holding the button down you simply press it briefly and release it.
It's not clear to me yet whether LFA will maintain the last setting after a restart, or if it requires a new activation after each new engine restart. Perhaps you can clear this up?
Thanks, Richard
Some of what you're explaining is a little different than what I've learned, but as I understand you do have to activate the LFA each time that you get in.
@@BrantfordKia Mine was on every time I started the car until I turned it off once during rain. Now it has to be turned on every time I start the car. This a 2022 Forte.
@@tc0566 Usually LKA is on, but LFA is off. I'll have to see if they changed that in the 2022 Forte here.
Will you review 2023 Niro EV?
Yes! We have reviewed all of the 2023 Niro EV trims!
Amazing 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
I just got Elantra 2023 and was trying the same feature. I have both button enabled however, when both icons are green, after few seconds (3 - 5 seconds) car is giving ping pong effect. Right to left and left to right. I have to manually take control and put it back in center. Can you help if this is the case and how the system should work?
If you have LFA (green steering wheel) it should keep you centered in the middle of the lane, with minimal response from you. The LKA (green light with two lines) would give you the "ping pong" effect, as it just keeps you in between the lanes, but doesn't center you. I hope that helps.
@BrantfordKia Thanks for the reply and detailed answer. Should I just use the LFA only to be kept in center and avoid using the LKA?
I hate having to push the button on my steering wheel every time I start the car.
Facts!!!! How do you set it/turn it on and forget it?
Is there anyway to leave it on all the time?
🔥
2025 Sportage Hybrid… how do I turn these off permanently. Just drove 600 miles and hate them!
Bad news I’m afraid, you can’t permanently disable this highly irritating “safety” feature.
Fastest way to disable them is to hold the button on the steering wheel down for 3 seconds and the icon on the screen goes orange.
I have covered 200 miles in my sportage, and i literally despise that this feature can’t be permanently disabled.
Sucks hey! 😕☺️✌️
What is the 0 to 50 bar that keeps filling up on eco mode?
I'm not sure what you're referring too. Sorry.
I still do not know how the FCW-A works on my 2020 Optima S.
Basically it’s going to be looking for vehicles in front of you. The warning will go off if you’re approaching someone too quickly and a collision is about to happen. The A stands for ASSIST, and that is “capable” of stopping the vehicle to avoid the collision, but I ask people to test that the same way they test their airbags… DON’T! Because there are a number of situations where it may not activate, so you don’t want to put yourself in the position to crash your car.
kool car :))
can these features be turned off permanently?
They can. I do encourage people to try them, they're not as intrusive as I thought they would be, and I find there are a number of situations where they actually make driving more enjoyable.
@@BrantfordKia I have never enjoyed the safety features. As a truck driver, I have actually found them as a hazard. Since they can be turn off permanently, I am eager to go to a local dealer
I love my Hyundai Ioniq
It's a great car!
On the you tube videos we see 2022 kia sportage in 2 ways one with the new symbol one without. Why
The 2022 Kia Sportage here at our dealers will only have the old logo (it's the previous model year style vehicle) The 2023 models will have the new logo.
@@BrantfordKia tks
That would never work in Georgia we don't have any lanes. They paint them about once every 20 years or so.
Haha! Time to move to Canada!
@@BrantfordKia too cold!!!
@@tairdudeusa7981 Haha! I don't know, I hear Texas is just as cold lately!
How about Selteo 2021
The Seltos has the button on the steering wheel. It has the most current system that I described in the video.
This is ridiculously complicated.
Take a look at how Volvo does it, much better.
To simplify my new 2021 Telluride….just turn all this techno crap to the OFF position and drive the vehicle. Duh.
Spent 4 hours in the Owners Manual turning ALL of this junk OFF. And….NO….this techno garbage does NOT keep you safe.
Actually driving it with both hands on the wheel and looking outside does.
It's ok to turn everything off, but it's my job to help people understand the systems. They are designed for people's safety, and I keep most of them on in my personal car as I think they make me a better driver, not a worse one.
@@BrantfordKia KIA should delete about 95% of these systems. Most people drive poorly enough without the vehicle maki g them dumber still……don’t actually want to drive, call a Limo. We’d all be better off.
@@rodcoulter997 I think we disagree on this.
This is the stupidest feature ever put in any vehicle......maybe I'm old fashioned. I have this in a rental car I'm driving right now.....I shut it off- it's downright dangerous to use in traffic, and I can't imagine how bad this is on slippery winter roads.
Works great in the winter, I use it everyday on my car. We disagree. If you bought the car, we would explain it's features to you better than a rental company would.
It looks like drivers need to be take computer education to manage these cars. It should be a very simple solution to avoid not paying attention on the road but spending time managing the buttons. In my view it can bring easy numbers of collision a lot of higher than collision because pf cell phone .us government should need pay attention to use similar gadgets inside cars
My 2021 TELLURIDE is like learning a new computer program!!!
It can be frustrating at times but once you figure it out, it all starts to make sense.
Having these classes really helps, thanks.
Agreed! 🤣
Thanks for watching!
Great job explaining this Peter! It's always nicer when you can explain with pictures.
Thanks for watching!
This is the feature that I hate about my 2019 Forte. This is the feature that will make me never buy a Kia again. Cars have 3 task to accomplish; Start, Steer, and Stop. My Kia starts and stoppes very well. The steering is the worst part of ownership. Swerving is the best way to get a DUI and the Lane Assist is always swerving. You are not enjoying your trip if you are fighting the steering wheel the entire trip. I found this to be the deal breaker when I took a 2 day trip from NC to TX.
LKA vs LFA is a bit clearer now. Worth a second viewing. Thank you. I have LKA in the 2019 Niro EV SX Touring. First car I owned with it. Blind spot warning is a good feature to have too.
Thanks for watching.
Kia absolutely has the best LFA LKA system ever, in most vehicles i've used it bounces you back and forth like a ping pong ball. Honda is probably second best execution, unfortunately i'm so used to it now when I drive my Ram that doesn't have it I miss it sorely.
Correct. Just got a 2022 Telluride and my wife didn’t touch the gas or brake for over 100 miles with limited steering wheel input too. All of the systems work seamlessly together.
The kia/Hyundai lane keep assist is one of the best if not the best systems
I completely agree! Thanks for watching!
LFA needs to make an audible noise when turning off. A light chime would do. It’s soo dangerous if you so happen to take your hands off the wheel. And it turns off. Thankfully it’s only happened once. But it scary. 2:21
2023 Kia Sportage
My problem with the lane assist is when the line on the right hand side of the road veers to the right where there is a turn off to a side street or road, the car wants to steer in that direction. Turning it off is the only option. And it's more than just a little dangerous. BTW, my car is a 2020 Forte GT line.
Agreed with this. Would be nice if it followed the left lane marker by default.
Also... how hard is it to beep at us when LFA disables. God knows the car beeps at us for everything else!
What if the person in front of you is drunk and weaving?
My 2022 kia forte lxs does both at the same time
I bought a used 2020 Kia soul GT line. These safety features are beyond excellent. Yesterday I went to move to the lane next to me without my turn signal on and the car ACTIVELY put me back in the current lane. It surprised me but I loved it. This car is always looking out for my safety. And I use my turn signals a lot more now. 😂You’ve done a fantastic job and as you know the GT line from 2020 is awesome but I won’t go on here with the compliments now. Great job KIA! This car is just plain fantastic. And the mileage is great too.
Great video! One qestion I had is since the LFA uses the car in front of me as a marker, how does it work when there is lane marker. but there is no car ahead of me and I'm driving under 60mph? Does it also "see" the lanes like LKA do? Also as you mentioned, the LKA "bounce you from one lane to the other", how is it different from lane departure warning?
This is honestly so confusing! I bet there are thousands of users out there who are missing out on this amazing feature just because of the complicated operation! Poor I mean poor engineering!!
Super useful thank you 🙏. I’ve been trying to get my head round the features on my 2023 Sportage - it’s super useful but can seem a little weird at times. Now I understand clearly the difference and the speed on/off action for the one feature that helps a lot. Love my hybrid Sportage.
My 2021 UK custom XCeed tends to struggle in my area with rural roads often without marking or odd lines on the road including single track with passing places. I'm still undecided whether I want to keep it on or not because when it works i can feel how helpful it is but a few times on my journey it will disagree with my driving line even though I'm taking the safest position on the road.
I'm interested to know also just how effective the Forward safety assist on these are. I feel like it doesn't warn me soon enough to autobrake or let me react, however I don't really have a way to test this properly. Any info on the Forward assist function would be good. Great video thanks
I have a 2023 EV6 Wind AWD. I was expecting LKA/LFA to be like my Hyundai Santa Cruz. But it works terrible. With LKA/LFA on, the car will bounce between lane markers and eventually (20 sec) cross over a lane marker. I went to KIA service and the consultant said the system doesn't work very well and I should not expect the system to keep the car in the center of the lane. It is dangerous to use.
I just purchased a 2023 EV6 GT-Line and I can see how to turn on the lane keep assist and it stays on, but I can't figure out how to turn on the Lane Follow Assist and keep it on. I have to press the button every time I start the vehicle. If I press and hold the button it naturally just turns off the LKA press and hold it again and the LKA is back on. Would really love to keep them both on, like I have it in my 2020 Niro EV EX.
I have a '22 Stinger GT 2 & the LKA button on the dash, down by the fuel door/hatch release doesn't do anything. I have them on the wheel also & those do function correctly, is the button on the dash supposed to be non-functional?
Thanks Peter. Wife & I are still wading through the inch thick owner’s book. Our local JC does not have a Car Controls 101 course. In my 70s - this is fun (ha ha).
I hear you! I prefer videos over owner's manuals, so that's why I try to make them!
Very noce explanation. Now if I can just figure out why my Valet alert warning keeps coming on even though I used the pin number to turn it on. So annoying!
Lane keep assist is a nuisance regardless of how it works, been driving over 50 years, never needed it, still don’t!
Very good explanation thanks for the video. I do have a question In the Kia vehicles is the adaptive cruise control , and the lane follow assist different systems? Ie You can turn each one separately on its own? I own a Nissan and with their pro pilot assist both are turned on with one button.
Don't use this feature when your side mirrors are frozen with ice/snow until they are cleaned off. could ruin the mirrors, happened to my wife in a snow storm. she knows better now.
My 2019 kia cerato/forte has the LKA only. What does the green steering wheel mean then?? Its only keeping in lane or is it also centering me?
Your surprised that people doesn't understand it and after 2.5 minutes you still haven't said what it does or how to use it?
How do you turn this feature off permanently so that its off when I start the engine? I always turn it off manually on the steering wheel which is annoying but less annoying that lane assist.
I have a 2023 sportage and I hate driving it because the lane assistance makes me feel like i have no control over the car. It stresses me out. Can i turn that off.
The lane assists it one of the most irritating safety feature in new car along with assisted braking, if you need these features get of the road.
NGL it's 3am and this was the most confusing thing I've ever heard hahaha
Thank you I didn't know the difference for my 2021 Seltos EX. Now I know the difference. It is a great feature for the LFA. I like how it keeps me in the lane. I actually put both features on when on highway though.
unfortunately it keeps automatically shutting off on fortunately he has a lot of automatic shut-off things and you can't stop it from shutting off and shut off shutting off
Great explanation. Owners manual was useless in this case but now it's all clear for me. I use lane keep assist on highways and it works surprisingly well.
I switch my off all the time I think it to Aggressive tomorrow I'm going to switch on for a week and I will let you know
Why doesn't auto hold and follow assist stay on. I have to turn it on everytime when starting a new trip.
The reason why it's confusing...is because you're making it confusing. Who cares about what cars had in 2020 or before that? I own a 22 Carnival. Explain the feature that is NOW in place, not what was in place 2 years ago.
We do more videos on the Kia product than anyone else online. This video came out before your 2022 Carnival. This was meant to help people differentiate between the vehicles that were currently for sale at the time of this video. There were several generations of this system out at the time. Sorry to confuse you.
Only thing this enables so that the people have less effort for texting while driving.
Tries hard to confuse. Jumps right into prior version features and never recovers
Well thanks a bunch, that is as clear as a swamp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it possible to have lane follow assist fitted tk my kia tbat has lane keep assist
Well done Peter, not easy to explain. Thought for a video, our ethe backing up warning for pedestrians and other cars/hazards.
Yeah, that's a great idea. I'll try to do that soon.
Why is there no way to keep the button on the steering wheel (lane follow exist) always active if I want it to be? I have to activate it every time I start the car....I want it to be on all the time. 2022 Kia Niro EV
Me too, but that's the way it works. I assume because they want you to be on roads that can handle the system, instead of parking lots that could confuse the system? Or maybe there's a regulation requiring the driver to select it. I'm not sure.
If I cannot see the lines on the road so as to be unsafe... I'm parking the vehicle and walking. Buttons be damned....
That seems like a safe thing to do!
How does the LFA work with the LKA turned off?
I have never heard such a convoluted explanation in my life. Before this I understood how lane keeping assist worked on most cars. Now I don't understand anything. Many people understood the concept of both Lane Keep Assist and Lane follow assist, they just wanted to find out how to activate each one in their KIA. I listened to your video and I still don't know how to use either one in my 2024 KIA Forte LXS Sedan.
Shit saved me last night I was falling asleep so bad on the road but was still gliding in my lane 🫶🏾💙 thankfully no one else was out tho
Can you please show us how to use the new k5 GPS? Can’t find any addresses here in Canada
That's odd. I haven't used the navigation system in the K5 yet. I'll have to look into that.
We have curvy roads here it helps but does feel weird.
So lane follow assist follows the car in front of me? Suppose he drives off the road. (On a road with no lines)
Haha! In that case you're definitely going to want to take control of the car! No... seriously, just because it CAN use that information doesn't mean that it just always defaults to following the vehicle in front of you. What the technology does, is it CAN use the lane markers, and it CAN use the vehicle in front all as reference points to decide where to steer. If the system is unsure, it leaves it up to you, and indicates in the dash that it is not actively steering the vehicle. That's why you need to keep your hands on the wheel at all times.
As a Police Advanced driver both of these features are a pain. Sadly in my 2022 XCeed they have to be switched off every time I start the car as the settings don't allow me to permanently switch them off, like I used to be able to do in all my previous Kias. They default back to 'on' every time I switch the car on..... annoying to say the least.
I just got a 2018 Kia Rio Platinum. I do not however have a menu for lane safety and my Kia only warns me when I am about to cross the line of the lane. This means that I do not have an active lane keep assist in my car installed, only the lane departure warning, correct? Thank you very much for your answer!
Thank you for the info, never gave it a chance with my 2021 Seltos, but will give it a go with my 2024 Seltos. Easier to listen to you than figure out that manual it came with.
It doesn't work so great when it is raining. :(
Hi Peter ,nice informative video. I am wondering when any of those features on ,can I steer left or right to avoid sudden possible collusion ?? Can I override the assist system ?
Great questions. Steering past the system just feels like driving over a slight hump on the road. You can also turn the system off completely, but signaling your lane change also de-activates the system while you signal. When I use this on my car, if I ever have to cross the lane marker, I just signal my lane change.
Great explanation ! I have a 21 Sorento and know what they do but couldn't ever really explain it...well done
Yeah... it's something that has been difficult to explain. Thanks for your kind comment!
The worst thing about the LFA system is the incredibly over-reactive braking. It literally SLAMS on the brakes at slow speeds with TONS of room on the shortest follow distance. It's absurd, and why I almost never use either of these systems (unless I'm on the interstate).
