Very tuff to come up with 25. I had to be true to myself Instead of trying to impress or be cool ! I wish I would have got X in this list.. The girl bands were important to rank because of the groundbreaking influence on many other bands to come !
Jt, fantastic list and a job well done. Glad to see you’ve bravely done a ranking. When I get home I’ll attempt this or another version going around. One more day left in Paris. Tomorrow it’s Versailles and a crate dig in my favourite Parisian record store. They have a lot of cheapie crates, underneath the bins of course 😁😁. Cheers.
Good hunting for the cheap heat over there ! You might as well give this a try, Jack.. The ranking that is. I've been thinking about this one for a year, at least !
Note : The Band is definitely and mostly Canadian, in origin. I included them because of their rootsy style and the well of Americana music that sprung from them, Dylan, and others !
G’day JT , That’s a terrific list . Hard to argue with any of your selections . Me personally I would find room for Grand Funk Railroad & Blue Oyster Cult but it’s all good . Back home after our family trip , listening to some of the great US pressings I picked up at Amoeba SF , White Rabbit Records Fullerton & Zia in Vegas . Love the thick cardboard and heaviness of your US releases . Cheers mate
Did you go to the Rainbow Zia or down south on Warm Springs Road in Las Vegas? I thought of Grand Funk and BOC.. Couldn't squeeze them into my final top 25. Yeah.. US jackets are awesome, and our pressings are generally goo's as well. Bet it feels good to settle in back home in Australia. Cheers, Craig
Finally ! 🫡 Someone gets it.. The genius and soaring harmonies of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys ! I had to include The Band because of their flat-out greatness and contribution to Americana music that is widespread. Thanks so much ! 🎵
Hey JT. Great ranking list. Pleased to see Lynyrd Skynyrd, CCR, Bruce and the E Street Band and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers make your list. Very cool that you included The Band too. They certainly belong. Well put together with some great info and photos. Awesome job!!! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Thanks, Rich. Adding The Band had to be, because of their influence on Americana, and where would Bruce and TP be without their incredible bands to get them started ! Your Eagles are flying high, and have a good turkey week.. I'll tell Sean you say Hi
Hit a lot of high points here, JT! Fun to put this type of list together, and enjoyable to watch (and debate!). I would see The Ramones every year when they came to CT: thirty songs in thirty minutes! Great summary of the importance and influence of all these bands. Well done 😎🎶
This was fun, although, a top 50 would be more concise.. So many other bands to add way up high, or include anyway ! So cool to see The Ramones as you did. I didn't dive into punk really, until 1981.. and I never saw the big bands, just local stuff, and we were busy playing our own original punk tunes in with our other set. My singer/ writer was influenced by Agent Orange and Fugazi. Thanks Ed
Fanny gets mentioned a lot. I finally will check them out. Runaways into Social Distortion. Mike Ness from Costa Mesa! Pixies! Allman Brothers are one of my favorites having seen them several times. Outstanding live shows. The Byrds had such a broad influence. Grateful Dead of course! Really enjoyable video JT! ✌️
My favorite videos on UA-cam.. Fanny ! Best way to watch and listen to Fanny is.. The Beat Club on UA-cam. Outstanding performances ! Ain't That Peculiar" Hey Bulldog" Blind Alley, Special Care. Pull up Fanny- Complete Gig ( Blue screen behind the girls ). Thanks for checking out my list, Mike !
Mike grew up in Fullerton ( close enough ) and giged a lot in Costa Mesa, Santa Ana, and all around Orange Co. early on. Nowadays, he lives in Santa Ana 👍
This one took me days to finish.. Uuugh !! This vid comes from the heart, and several other bands could have made the cut, easily ! Have a great holiday week, Catherine, and thanks !
Definitely ! I tried to squeeze ZZ Top in my list.. Could have taken FZ out and that little band from Texas in ! Haha☺MC5 belongs in this list as well. I used to ski with Fee Waybill back in the early 80's. Montrose, I love that band, and have been showing them a lot.. Good to hear from you, thanks, and have a good holiday ! 🦃
It's really hard, RM.. I've been playing around with this ranking for a year now, and I still came up with a similar list. This was fun to put together. I wrote out a personal blurb on all 25 !😊
Hi JT!!! Cool list and awesome bands and two artists too...... and nice to see some kind of lesser known or not so poúlar bands like Fanny, Social Distortion just to name a few and thought i was going to see ZZTop here, but it's your list and that's ok. cheers and be well
ZZ Top could have been here easily, the only position I had for That little band from Texas" was Frank Zappa & the Mothers. I liked thr diversity of keeping FZ ! Thanks always, Cristian
Hey there, Jon ! I watched your top 15 not long ago.. Nirvana would be high on my list, and I thought of squeezing FZ and The Mother's out for them. I'd rather do a 90's list, as I love that era so much ! I included 2 artists because their bands were crucial to the development of the boss and TP. Have a nice holiday🦃
Great list. I liked seeing The Replacements and R.E.M. and The Beach Boys do deserve a high ranking. CCR would be very close to number one for me if I didn't include Springsteen and Petty as bands.
Thanks for the Beach Boys nod. They do deserve a high-ranking. I had to squeeze in TP and the boss as bands on this one. Point being.. No band, no success ! Haha.. CCR should be top 5, actually ! Thanks, Randy
I'm also a big fan of Social Distortion and Mike Ness. I had a chance to pick up a double album of hits from Mike Ness, but they wanted an arm and a leg for it and I was using both at the time. Also, I agree with your choice of Pixies, a definite favorite. I became a fan of The Replacements after the heyday, mainly because of the "Singles" soungtrack and the great songs by Paul Westerburg. Of course, CCR is a given that should be on everyone's top 25 list. Same with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, what I consider to be the perfect band. Great choice with REM too, in fact, your entire list is perfect. Great choices. I've tried to put a response to this thread together, but it keeps falling apart on me, so, many props for pulling this one off. Great job!
Right.. I wouldn't buy some overpriced comp, either ! Their separate LP's are the way to go, for Social D I feel, and most are excellent throughout, anyway..
This really was a task, Mike. I'm sure you could pull one off ! Once I thought about girl bands, their importance, and adding The Band, even though they are mostly Canadian.. So Americana, and one of my all-time favorite groups 😊 My list then sort of came together, and the more eclectic, the better !
@jtsrecordroom3963 Well as it turned out, that same store had the debut Social Distortion album there too for a much better price and that's the one I bought. I usually don't give much consideration to a compilation either but the Mike Ness one was pretty cool, but I'm happy with waiting to look for the proper albums with that band anyway.
I'm gonna check out this Mike Ness comp, Mike. I just saw M Ness interviewed recently. He's recovering from throat cancer surgery, and is doing well considering. And they plan to go out on tour soon as well !
Jt, nice work on shedding light onto some of the very influential ladies. Stellar list mate. Some of my absolute fav's like Stooges, Pixies, Blondie, Big Star (I had them!), Replacements, Talking Heads, Ramones and on and on. Cheers...Ben
Yeah.. I had to be honest with myself and what I truly like. I know this ranking has been going around. I've had a changeable ranking list for about a year, and figured it's about time that I put it out there. I saw Brian Wilson front and center back in 2017. He had The Wondermints, Blondie Chaplin, and Al Jardine with him. It was an incredible evening, and through the years, I have become an even bigger Beach Boys fan. Thanks, Ben
@ I find these things tough because I don’t have lists physically or mentally of favourites. I saw a Brian tour with that line up & they played Pet Sounds & for the encore Blondie kicked at the jams on Sail On Sailor & a decent chunk off those 2 (?) records he’s on
Your list was excellent, and to end it with the mighty Archers Of Loaf ! I'm prepping a short 90's vid.. maybe 6 or 7 records. Good to see your American bands, Ben
I just picked up a great Joan Jett 7-inch single, "Spinster! Runaway's were so cool. I love the Pixies. Feel free to move the Stooges up to the top ten. "Parallel Lines" was my introduction to "punk". I appreciate Frank's genius. I just could never get into his music. The Talking Heads are another favorite of mine. VU - Love Reed, Cale. REM 🏆
I like all of your choices, I'm just all over the musical map ! You should do a list, Mark. It would be tasteful, and Prince is gonna be way up high in a top 25 ! I saw that Joan Jett 45 on your recent vid
Good Morning JT, I love your shares. I started sweating when I didn't see REM. They are definitely high up in my opinion. They moved my needle the most in the early 80's and was lucky to see them half a dozen times live from 85-95. I realize folks love the Beach Boys but, I always felt they were the most overrated band in history. It is fun to debate these band lists. That's why I love the VC community. Making these shares interactive. Take care JT! Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving/Holiday Season...
That's funny about REM ! I love that band.. Definitely ! I get what you're saying about The Beach Boys, I still love them, and once you go down that Brian Wilson rabbit hole, there's a whole lot more great music to be discovered. I like good pop writing, anyway. Unreal that you got to see the boys, especially back in '85 !! Very cool
Yeah ! The Cramps, The Dolls, Nirvana.. I could have kicked a few of my other choices to the curb, and added these bands that I have plenty of records by.. The Pretenders are really more British than U'S. even though Chrissey is from Akron, Ohio. I got in big trouble in the comments of one of my vids a few years ago adding The Pretenders as an American Band ! Thanks for these great picks
The Eagles and Black Crowes belong on a top 25 rock/ popular list, definitely.. Honestly, Doug, I completely forgot about The Black Crowes, and I like that band, so much ! This was a difficult task, especially with just coming from the heart and not trying to impress 🫡 In other words, what bands do I really and truly love !
Haha😁 Yep, that was me and Barry from The Blues Monsters ! Steve has a pretty killer channel, I'm a local history buff, and I wait to see if he was gonna make a mistake, and he doesn't ! MGM and Riverdide Hotel and Pyramid Lake Native battle.. All e were spot on ! ABB incredible band, I was at that show with Storyville opening for ABB at Reno Hilton ( MGM ) in '96 🫡
I think this is way too difficult to do, but I like your choices. I might put the Pixies higher! Cool that the Talking Heads and REM rank highly on your list. VU would be my #1.
Pixies could easily be higher.. And VU is a #1 for sure ! I had to add The Band, because of their Americana style, even though they are mostly Canadian. And us in the lower 48 and you guys north of the border are good neighbors, anyway !
I agree.. You first ! I'm barely down to one vid a week. It's OK for us to own a little bit of bands that have two countries.. It shows our love for them !
Fanny used to play Bakersfield a lot. They were really good live but I didn’t think their album that I bought captured their magic. I included a lot of your choices on my list. I could explain why I didn’t include the others but there isn’t much point in that.
Yep, Fanny was better live, and that Beat Club stuff on UA-cam is the best way to watch and listen to them, nowadays. Your list was killer, Richie.. This was fun to do !
Thanks for that ! Now I know, although I love that VU cover. I've been finding mint condish Mitch Ryder LP's lately digging out in the real wild ! ( thrift, storage lockers, warehouses, etc. )

Yeah.. I can see your point about FZ and The Mothers. I felt an urge to add good experimental, and he's early American prog, actually as well.. I'm glad Skynyrd is still going.. I missed Gary Rossington and the band here in Reno on that last tour.. Oh well. I saw them 1 to 2 months before the plane crash in Vegas at The Aladdin Theatre.. Killer show ! That is a great and diverse top 25 list as you can get from US/Canadian bands. Nice job! I totally agree with The Beach Boys at #1.

@jtsrecordroom3963 Throw in a little T.S.O.L, and you've got quite the trifecta there!
Yeah.. TSOL and SNFU out of Canada.. Good bands, for sure ! I'm listening to The The " Soul Mining" and Nils Lofgren ( best of ) before work, today..
@jtsrecordroom3963 Nice! It's a Van The Man Monday for me in the office today: Back On Top, Down The Road, Philosopher's Stone comp. Keeps me moving..

@jtsrecordroom3963 I could tell you did your research. Hard work pays off. Have a good holiday with your family.

Hey JT. Great video and list! Well done. Cheers
I end up bending the rules.. But then again, what rules ? 😅 Thanks Bobby
@ I agree! 🙂

This thread is wonderful and great to see your 25. I don't think I could whittle down bands to 25.....just to hard for me.

4 part harmonies, at least ! Brian Wilson solo shows are 5 part harmony ! 🎵 Amazing that I have the Beach Boys ranked higher than The Dead !

Good Morning JT,
I love your shares. I started sweating when I didn't see REM. They are definitely high up in my opinion. They moved my needle the most in the early 80's and was lucky to see them half a dozen times live from 85-95.

I'm a roots rocker, as well.. So I had to add some of my country rock / Americana bands also.
Well I give you credit just for making the list. Its not easy. I would add Eagles and the Black Crowes

Haha😁

The runaways cover of rock n roll is really a cover of Mitch Ryders cover
Thanks for that ! Now I know, although I love that VU cover. I've been finding mint condish Mitch Ryder LP's lately digging out in the real wild ! ( thrift, storage lockers, warehouses, etc. )
And ,,Ted Nugent,Aerosmith and Van Halen.
Excellent choices, I considered Aerosmith and VH in the top 10, and.. They should have been here out of respect and their greatness.
I would call this list a broad spectrum within the rock medium. I never would have picked Zappa’s group. I do have
A quite a lot of their vinyl. Lynyrd Skynyrd, love em. You have several listed I have nothing of but I never run across

@ Skynyrd with current lineup will be in Cullman my home in June along with a bunch of
Of other acts. Hope to make it
They should be on fire ! Johnny and Rickey do a fine job, as do all the other band members.. Hope you make the show !
As an old guy, I was not familiar with REM.
I need to see what you've been up to on yours, Richard.
REM is often compared or at least influenced by the Byrds and other jangly bands. Have a nice holiday this week. Well, be over in West Sac on Thanksgiving.
Love social Distortion
Social D RULES !! 💀
Way too many OC/LA bands dude. Whats with that goofy smile every time you mention one? Quite possibly the worst list on the internet.
Alright then.
Enjoyed that quick and to the point video. I am going to tell you the bands on here that I don't like though. The are - Lynard Skynard, Greatfull Dead and Beach Boys. X would be in my top three. Thanks for the video.
Yeah.. X should be way up there on any list. The problem for me, I like a huge slice of almost everything, and yes.. I like The Grateful Dead ! It's a regional thing for me as well. Thanks for your views, and If I tried to be ultra cool, I would have listed all underground/ alternative bands rather than a bunch of classic rock bands. I love X, and have them on Cd, Vinyl and cassette. I'm putting John Doe and Co. on right now !
@@jtsrecordroom3963 I know you have very wide musical tastes. I do appreciate that and get alot of information and ideas from you.
Thanks again
