Thanks for sharing. Might I add the importance of wearing a harness. While trimming branches overhanging my driveway, I had one branch fall and hit the master stop switch on the ground controls. Meanwhile I'm up in the air without a harness (the rental yard offered, but I told them I had my own, which I did, but couldn't find when I got home) Long story short, I considered lowering myself down via my ground rope (yup, had a 3/4 inch rope for the saw, in case it fell), but every time I thought about climbing over the railing without a body harness, discretion proved the better part of valor. I'd called my wife on my cell phone, and she finally came out and reset the stop button. I broke for lunch and found d my harness before going up again.
good thing you had your cell phone with you. i have some trees that need trimming and i plan on renting a lift to get me up there. when i do it i will have someone on the ground for just in case.
Just rented one today from Home Depot. Used it to take down a 50' oak tree. Worked Great! A little shaky when fully extended but got used to that after about 30 minutes. Fully limbed the tree down to 10' then took the trunk down from the ground. Never took a tree that size down before nor used a boom lift. If you have good common sense and carefully plan each fall you can save yourself a bunch of money. Cost was 300 for 24 hours vs 1200 for service to do the work. Good judgement is the key here.
The very first thing to operate is to unhook the safety lock lever which holds the booms in place while traveling. If you go to raise the boom and it fights you, look for the boom lock lever. Other than that, I used this video to learn the operation. This video is clear and concise, good job.
I was thinking of renting one of these, and looking on UA-cam for how it operated. I just happened to see your video by happenstance. Thank you very much for showing me how its done.
Unhook from the trailer because it affects the self leveling feature. It will try to pick up the tow vehicle. The trick to be comfortable way up there is to lean against the railings. If you try to keep it from moving using your legs, it will move around a little. There is a turn limiter so you don't twist up the hoses and wires. You figure out which way you want to go and then rotate it to the best starting position.I use mine to raise, lower and service my collection of old farm windmills. Once you get comfortable with it, its extremely handy: trim trees, raise roofing shingles, Christmas lights, aerial pictures, paint the barn, and lots of other stuff. I practiced with a dummy load to see if it would tip. The thing stops you from getting anywhere near the tip point as it senses the loads in the outriggers.
Bill Cobb yes. rented a Bil Jac lift and it says to disconnect from the tow vehicle before leveling. That might be why there is a park brake. I say might be because it used the front stabilizers to lift it off the ball.
Thanks. I learned a couple tips from your comment. I have to use one on my new job and it scares to heck out of me. I hate heights but I have to get used to it.
If you have any problems call the number on the machine and one of the techs will walk you through any problems. Errors happen all the time during Christmas
That was hilarious. You are truly honest in your 'human' experience and lack of knowledge with this piece of lifting equipment but it was informative. TY
You just saved me lots of frustration. Couldn't figure out how I was having so much trouble backing this stupid thing up, it was engaging that emergency brake. Too bad the rental center didn't bother to mention that LOL
All Aerial Work Lift Platforms use lift locks in the hydraulics. A loss of hydraulic pressure will not allow the lift to come down on its own. A blown hose for example will require a rescue from another lifting device like a fire truck ladder or another lift. Always use a spotter and teach your spotter how to lower you with the ground controls. The spotter helps you to avoid hitting things with the boom. Always wear a fall restraint harness.
I'm pretty high right now and want to buy one of these things eventually as I'm scared of tall ladders. It seems like it would be a $20k or so investment but the usage you can out of this seems awesome. You could even perch up top for photography shots.
Thank you, this was very useful and reassuring. I plan to rent one of these to install some hidden hooks on the inside part of the fascia board on my second-story that will make Christmas light installation a breeze in future years.
Thanks for the video chief, it helped a ton. I mastered the controls in no time and was able to do what I had to get done before having to return the rental.
I appreciate this video - it is the first one that came up upon my searching. I think it fortunately or unfortunately is a better video because there were some errors in use that could be pointed out by other viewers. I'm glad you are safe and I am glad you shared this video - I think it will help at my home. The only thing I still question is how much of a slope could be safe - probably nearly none - but I can ask when renting since I don't find that info so far online. Thank-you!😊
I gave an estimate to cut down a palm tree got accepted then I was like "aaaah shiiiiii* i need boom lift and I dont know how to operate, what in the I hell got into". I am glad I saw this video, now is just loosing the height fear lol. Thanks for this video.
Even with the harness, this is a great tutorial. My only question is, "do you have to reposition the base as you move from one side of the home to the other?" I'm thinking of putting the Christmas lights up myself versus paying a contractor.
To tilt the bucket in that third "disabled" setting you have to hold the knob in that position and then use the joystick to engage the movement, holding the knob In the position the entire time. I believe it is just a safety feature
Thank you! Perfect vid which told me what I need to know. Isn't there a locking latch which locks the boom to the trailer frame? Am renting one of these for the first time today.
Thanks for the vid. Can you tell me how far away from the base you can get the bucket for limbing trees? this is the only model that is close to my area. I just want to make sure none of the branches will be landing on the base. Thanks in advance.
Good video, no unnecessary bulls*** blabla, I like that, short and sweet. Anyways my question is, when up on the platform..what happens if I move the toggle BEFORE hitting the trigger..will I have to reset or..? I dont have a LOT of experience but the last time I rented one I kept getting stuck up there and couldnt get the machine to move, I'd have to wait about 10 minutes before trying again or I just pushed in the stop button, then started over. Is that what I was doing wrong?
Im about to rent one " this weekend maybe" to trim trees around my house, thanks for video, But I was thinking about safety harness what about falling out???
Question: do you NEED a wiring harness or any wiring for the boom lift to the truck? From what I'm seeing and reading, the brakes are only engaged like mentioned in the video. The reason I ask is, because apparently home depot doesn't lend these out to people around me. You have to actually go through compact power and THEY deliver the boom to your house. So needing to tow it around is actually not needed. On public roads, that is. You still physically have to tow it to the spots on your yard anyways. And if I'm on my private property, I really don't need the wiring or lights. I just don't know if the brakes are affected/needed to be turned off. Turns out, all 3 of my vehicles have NO trailer hitches. Ok not so bad....I'll go rent one......oh....ok...home depot won't let you use their trucks for this. They lock their hitches and its not for personal use....wtf. Ok off to menards....... Oh, not a single truck they have, have trailer hitches. what in the actual sweet buttery batman. A $200 trailer hitch bolts onto my jeeps back bumper, so I thought I was good to go, until today I just realized, there's no wiring for the trailer for the jeep. This job is turning into a nightmare.
My next question: do they make a towable one that self propells it's self?cause your not moving it around without some form of tow vehicle.that thing is heavy and awkward heavy at that.
Wondering if it is a problem if you have to set this up on a slight hill in gravel driveway? I'm not actually going to operate it - hiring a guy who will use it, but I like to be prepared / know how it's going to work before hand. Don't know if people still read these?
I need to replace some rake boards on the side of my house (up high). How wide of a working area will I be able to do before I have to move it? Great, concise vid BTW. Thanks!
Yes, unhook the trailer to keep yourself alive. The outriggers are not engineered to carry the additional weight of your truck. So, the rear outriggers are way overloaded. In addition, if the ball released with the boom in the air, the hitch end would launch up and try to launch you to the next block, unless it went over. Scary🙀
Very good job explaining the operation, Rob. I'm wondering how many times you can go up and down and around on that lift before your battery power runs out. I have lots of limbs to trim so I'd be moving it around a lot. Thanks for your time.
I just rented it today, One thing I wish they would have told me is DO NOT go to far to the left. It got locked up in that position, and I had to get a rachet and socket to turn the bolt at the end of the swing drive motor. I'm very happy that I did that when I was using the lower controls. I don't think it ould have been fun if I was up high in the bucket! Other than that, It seems ok. I got more done with my home made pole saw a few days ago.
Does the lift operate 180 degrees. Another words I need to access something directly behind the trailer at about 25' up. I do not want to disconnect from the truck.

I'll answer my own question - yes, it will self level on slight hills. Sometimes it's easier to 'help' the leveling system by manually extending the struts on the down hill side. Made our siding/soffit work completely doable rather than just dangerous!
How far will this reach horizontally. Say for example I need to trim limbs that are growing 20ft over a garage, will it let me hover over the garage 20ish feet?
I had to get it close to the tree to maximize the reach. It was as if for every foot from the tree I lost two feet reach. You could use a pole saw with it.
I still worry about it flipping I got one rented it and working on a tree job I got scared to open it all the way open and cut cuz it rocks like crazy makes me think it's going to flip
Does anyone know if it has to be fully extended to swing 360 degrees? I just rented one and it would only swing side to side about 45 degrees. I didn't need to go all the way up so I didn't try that.
I'm renting one of these tomorrow. Seriously, thank you for the demonstration, even 8 years ago. Excellent video.
Only video I've seen that truly captures the feeling at height. Nice job. Wow 7 years.

What kind of chainsaw did you use? Was the boom movable without hooking up to a vehicle

Thanks for posting this. This was the primer I needed to get started.
Very good info Thanks ! p.s. I believe the hand brake is for when you are not using the lift. So it stays where it should when you park.

Even with the harness, this is a great tutorial. My only question is, "do you have to reposition the base as you move from one side of the home to the other?" I'm thinking of putting the Christmas lights up myself versus paying a contractor.

You need to wear a harness. I've seen people fall out of buckets and it doesn't usually end well. Surprised HD doesn't supply a harness.

Great job.
great video . Always like to look professional on the job with customers looking on.

I’ve been painting for 25 years and I’ve been in 100s of reaches and every one is still a little shakey until you get used to it !
Thank you so much dude!
Can you move this around by hand. I have limited access in my yard and will not be able to tow it into position.
This thing is so heavy it would take 10 people to move it around. You may be able to use a large lawn tractor.
robpaints100 definitely would not recommend using a lawn tractor. But a sub compact tractor could definitely handle it

Once the lift is disconnected from tow vehicle, can it be pushed / pulled (one, two, three people?) to move around side of house to get to the back?
Good Job
thinking about renting this. is it light enough to maneuver by hand? i gotta side i cant drive to but gonna need something like this…
Im about to rent one " this weekend maybe" to trim trees around my house, thanks for video, But I was thinking about safety harness what about falling out???

very helpful...thanks for sharing
What about using it next to power lines
Would you be able to manually push/roll the unit to the spot you need to use it on a fairly level lawn?
nope. too heavy.

A man who trusts his machine.
could 3 men reposition the lift by hand on level ground?
Can 1 man move this lift by hand or do I have to hook it up to my truck every time I want to move it 30 feet?
I did not try to move it by hand but I know it is very heavy.
Always check ground conditions, I operate a dry run to make sure our riggers aren't sinking slowly. Maybe over kill better safe than sorry
How does it charge? How long for a full charge?

having someone on the ground is the smart way to go. if i am up that high in a lift i want someone on the ground just in case or at least someone within ear shot.
How is it powered?
Frank Dima battery powered
What's the maximum horizontal distance I can extend the bucket at 30FT in the air?
Even though its a small lift id still use press plates under all 4 leggs
Do these self-level on a side hill (~10 - 15 degrees)? Need to do soffit work on gables with side hill/walk out basement
Yea, my question too - anyone have experience/info?
I'll answer my own question - yes, it will self level on slight hills. Sometimes it's easier to 'help' the leveling system by manually extending the struts on the down hill side. Made our siding/soffit work completely doable rather than just dangerous!
Anyone know if it will self level on a slope. If I set it up on a sloped driveway for example, maybe 20deg grade?
I was hoping the wheels were powered so you could drive it around.
Ive been working in bucket trucks for iver 20 years, and these things still make me nervous.

Put it 2' from the ground and extend it all the way to the side and jump in the bucket, I did. at that point you can only fall 2'.
Has anyone had the problem where the outriggers simply wont go up? And you’ve already retracted and lowered the boom all the way?
Check battery charge and see if there is a flash code (yellow triangle on controls will flash if unit is in distress)
By "unsettling" do you mean you had to change your underwear?
Yours doesn't beep when in use. Can I make mine not beep when in use? I have the t500j
Sounds like Ted Cruise 😂
The park brake is there because you have to apply it before you mandatorily unhook the machine from your truck before you use the machine 😬
That's the 'No roll away down the hill lever'.
You should never leave it hooked to the vehicle you tow it with
Does anyone know if it has to be fully extended to swing 360 degrees? I just rented one and it would only swing side to side about 45 degrees. I didn't need to go all the way up so I didn't try that.
