  • The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (Latin: Ordo Equestris Sancti Sepulcri Hierosolymitani, OESSH), also called Order of the Holy Sepulchre or Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, is a Catholic order of knighthood under the protection of the Holy See. The pope is the sovereign of the order which, with the five other papal equestrian orders and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, are the only orders of chivalry that are recognized and protected by the Holy See.
    The order creates canons as well as knights, with the primary mission to "support the Christian presence in the Holy Land".
    The order today is estimated to have some 30,000 knights and dames in 60 lieutenancies around the world. The cardinal grand master has been Fernando Filoni since 2019, and the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem is grand prior. Its headquarters are situated at Palazzo Della Rovere and its official church in Sant'Onofrio al Gianicolo, both in Rome, close to the Vatican City.
    The history of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem runs common and parallel to that of the religious Canons Regular of the Holy Sepulchre, the order continuing after the Canons Regular ceased to exist at the end of the 15th century (except for their female counterpart, the Canonesses Regular of the Holy Sepulchre).
    The crusades coincided with a renewed concern in Europe for the holy places, with the Church of the Holy Sepulchre as one of the most important places. According to an undocumented tradition, Girolamo Gabrielli of the Italian Gabrielli family, who was the leader of 1000 knights from Gubbio, Umbria, during the First Crusade, was the first crusader to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulchre after Jerusalem was seized in 1099.

      Yeah, sometimes hollywood uses the wrong iconography for crusades era stuff. Its a symptom of the disease of them not understanding the crusades at all.

      they could be confused with the royal banner of the kingdom of Jerusalem which the knightly orders often fought alongsides. since its the same but gold/yellow

    So why did Philippe 1V not go after these military knights. He went after the Templars.

    • @ParryThis
      @ParryThis  2 місяці тому

      Because he went after the Templars to steal their money and properties, and to reduce the power of the church in France. The Knights of the Holy Sepulchre didn't have what he wanted.

      That's because i had to use a ton of sources to piece all of this together. It is taken from well over a dozen sources, seven of which are books that i own personally. There is not much info out there regarding the history of this order, at least not in comparison to many of the other knightly orders.

    • @crisanister5131
      @crisanister5131 2 роки тому +7

      Not the Georgian flag, the crosses are different. It's a variation of the flag of the kingdom of Jerusalem, with red crosses instead of gold.

    • @brettervonkanada6102
      @brettervonkanada6102 2 роки тому

      @@crisanister5131 A red 5 cross flag was Georgian since 6-7th century (4th century according to some sources) and by the time the order was formed. Kingdom of Jerusalem adopted a 5 cross banner after Georgians built 2-3 churches in Jerusalem between 1150-1190 (later with Ayyubid permission) and the Georgian flag was the only flag displayed there (also with Ayyubid permission). Since that was the only Christian flag displayed, Kingdom of Jerusalem adopted it every time it was not under Arab rule. Another important fact is that after 1054, Catholic countries/churches/orders were prohibited from using Orthodox symbols and a red 5 cross flag was clearly Orthodox symbol. Jerusalem used gold to make the flag their own and claim that it's not St. George's crosses being used. Even the English were under pressure from the Pope around that time since they used St George's flag (although they never complied). How this order is using the red banner is basically reverting the changes that Kingdom of Jerusalem made to make the flag more original, therefore borrowing a Georgian flag.
