    I think the downvotes are because you take a painfully long time to explain something quite simple.

      Add too these. it's not a gel or an acid. It is actually 4 layers of resin film, each doing a different job in controlling the amount of light being reflected by the mirror on the back to the driver. Just sayin.

    I just witness this phenomena for the first time today in my '94 740i as I pulled my sun shades down off the windshield. 8+ years driving the car and I had never noticed the amazing technology sitting 3 feet in front of my nose. Truly mystifying.

    Not to mention that the liquid used that you note is acidic, is actually very basic. And not only is it corrosive to materials, but poses an extreme health hazard, both from a respiratory standpoint, as well as a corrosive standpoint.

    When I bought my Jaguar XJR the liquid had dripped onto the J Gate and also splashed the seat as well, I had to re dye part of the seat but you can still see it , I asked the last owner if one of his girlfriends had put her nail varnish on the car!
    He was not amused by this but he was a friend of mine and he had a lot of girlfriends so it was a fair question.

    racemax3, your video certainly helped me realise one can apply some sort of voltage to those two wires, but I am not sure if this voltage has to be of a certain potential, and whether it has to be AC or DC, I experimented with 12v and then used a lower source, but still the colour either gets dark blue or dark green or in between but does not get to completely neutral like in normal mirrors, so have I damaged it?
    There are no signs of bubbles or other defects, the mirror is clean and even all over.Thanks in advance.

    my mirror had that bubble that you've just shown, I got a whole new mirror Housing the lot, so I take the the casing of and the whole mirror out and just left the wires hanging, and then attached the wires, it had a sensor pointing out of the car ,stuck to the windscreen that when you look at it from the outside you can see,like a lamp,, and after a lot of wiggling and giggling, I got the wires back connected and the mirror back into position, and started the car and when I put my finger over the little light on the mirror, it didn't go dark like you're one, and then I got the light out of my phone and shine it on to the mirror inside the car, now I don't know whether it's the inside one or the outside one that's meant to do it is the outside side sensor meant to detect that it is night time, combined with light on to the sensor inside the car on the mirror that makes it work I don't know whether I was imagining it but it did singing a bit more tinted after I put it in, what do you think ?

    Got a question for ya. How do you get the housing open that holds the glass? I just need to tighten the the part that attaches to the window because it’s a little loose.

    My rear mirror is damaged so I replaced it but every time I put a good one in and re-connect the wiring it leak again so the next one I didn’t connect the wires. So my next step is to have someone check my wires for shorts.

    If you are not interested in spending the $$$ for repairing this type of mirror and you have a tented rear glass as I do it can be taken apart, separate the two pieces of glass, clean the oil off and put them back together. Now you have a good review mirror that you can see through. It doesn't have the option to "dim" but if your back glass is tented then no need for dimming.

      I did did this. Pulled the metal off, then soaked the mirror in hot water to aid in separation. It worked, BUT the mirror now has "double vision". Did not result in a clean reflection.

    I have been asked by a friend to replace a Mercedes driver's side Mirror as it got smashed, so he picked one up that appears identical, however, I found that his car only has a wiring loom with 7 wires and the one he bought from a scrap yard has 15 wires, so I had to figure out which ones do the mirror angle in two axis, and which ones do the heater, and two for the side repeater indicators, however I was puzzled why there was a all those extra wires and what do they do, so I saw 2 more wires go to the mirror glass, not knowing what these do, I thought may be it is another heater circuit, so when i applied 12v across it the Mirror changed its colour bto deep blue! and then remained in this colour! even after 1/2 hour it was still deep blue, then I applied reverse polarity and the colour changed to darkish green and remains there and I cannot get the neutral colour! Damn technology seem to move faster than I can catch up with! How can someone tell me to change the colour to neutral and don't forget there was also a small PCB with tiny components that probably controls the tint.

    • @PaulSteMarie
      @PaulSteMarie 10 років тому +1

      The liquid crystal inside the mirror needs to be drive by an AC signal, not DC. It needs 30-100Hz, usually a square wave, to drive it properly. DC will cause the liquid to degrade and break down over time. That little PCB has a simple circuit to generate the square waves needed.

      Thanks paul, as they say little knowledge is very dangerous Paul Ste. Marie Good job it wasn't something like a air bag or something that applying voltagte could have blasted it off in my face!

    Wow wish I knew of this company after replacing (3) of these mirrors on my 2004 corvette,The mirror on the drivers door went bad again,Very bad design. Oh and they only get 0.5 volts to make them work..So don't go hooking up 12 volts..you will fry it.
