I’ve been doing twist outs ever since I’ve been natural because they’re a good, easy stretching method and style. But lately, I’ve been letting my hair be frizzier and more undefined because that’s it’s true natural state. It took me a while to accept that, and it’s still taking my family time to accept it, but I don’t want to always have to manipulate my hair, or do anything at all to it for it to be seen as acceptable. I also feel more carefree, and being carefree has been my ultimate goal in life.
i have always felt the way you felt about your hair and it being in a more natural state, but unfortunately my family doesn’t think it’s acceptable for me to wear my hair like that. i can’t go too long wearing my hair frizzier or combed out without my family asking when i’m going to do something to my hair, or that my hair looks a mess. it’s very frustrating because i used to love my hair no matter what it looks like but lately i don’t like my hair even when its in a twist-out or very curly. my family isn’t usually very accepting of sew ins either (unless they’re short and dark) but it’s gotten to the point where if my hair isn’t in some sort of style that isn’t my own hair (unless it’s straightened) i hate my overall appearance altogether, as ashamed as i am to say it.

One of my biggest tips to help with natural hair confidence besides all the obvious stuff you always hear (ya know, fake it til you make it/try not to care what other people think/etc) is to wear your hair in its natural state when you get dressed up. If you like makeup, wear some bold and flattering lipstick or eyeliner. Wear a nice outfit that makes you feel like you. Wear jewelry and other accessories. I see a lot of girls wearing their hair in it’s natural state on the regular when they are in sweats and no makeup or their regular work outfits. And then every time they have a wedding or party or something, they wear makeup, jewelry, heels, AND get a wig or silk press! I SWEAR with a lot of those hairstyles that you feel uncomfortable in, you could come to see the beauty in, if you styled yourself to the max and left the fro as is. I don't believe in hair typing anymore. I used to, but then I realized it's just another tool used to divide the black community, just like skin colors. It's the idea of having categories for features...what other group of people has categories like these? Light skin, dark skin, 4c, 3b. People argue about hair type, debate about if so and so's hair is REALLY 4c or not (there's so many videos titled "Reacting to 4c hair videos," on UA-cam. Everyone's hair is different. Hair types don't even really help because one person's "4c" hair can be completely different from someone else's "4c" hair. Hair typing is just another thing our community argues about 🤷🏽♀️ Just learn what your hair likes and needs based on density, porosity, etc.
While I’d agree hair typing by the 1A-4C categories is arbitrary itself (especially when it comes to the maintenance of ones hair because there are much more impt elements of the hair that matter), acknowledging texturism (and colorism, as you also pointed out) is important. Have all conversations about those two topics been productive? No. But there’s a reality that those phenomenon exist and seriously influence intracommunity dynamics
I don't think the hair typing system is bad. it can be useful when learning about how your hair reacts to certain techniques and learning what tools you should use on your hair to get your desired result. Hair typing taught me how I should be detangling my hair. I think the only danger comes when you prioritise hair typing over hair porosity. Rather choose your hair products based on porosity so your hair has an easier job at receiving moisture. This has been one of the most important things I've learned since I've started my natural hair journey 3 years ago
I finished my hair transition one year ago and since then I’m still trying to figure out how to take care of it because I stayed more than 10 years with straight hair. What I love most about it is that every day I learn something different, it’s like I’m taking care of a child that grows with all the love that I give to it. When I started my transition your videos were kind of a relief and an inspiration to myself❤️
I did a big chop 4 years ago, because although I was natural, I had a ton of heat damage. Because I had short hair, I couldn’t really do anything with it, and that showed me that I didn’t NEED to do anything with it. My hair grew so fast. The length has slowed down because the longer it got, the more I manipulated it, so I’m trying to reduce the manipulation again so I can reach my desired hair length.
Loving the energy on this channel. For so long I was in denial about my own curl pattern. Im finally accepting it and loving it more everyday. Would love to see an updated hair routine!
Yes to what you said about us expecting other people to be comfortable with us (our hair) before we’re even comfortable with ourselves (our hair)!!! I literally just said that to a friend the other day when we were reflecting on our natural hair journeys. I’ve noticed the confidence that I now radiate with my natural hair or box braids is returned- as in I get A LOT more compliments on my hair now than ever before. A little positive reinforcement never hurts lol. When you’re truly confident and comfortable in your skin the world will fall in line. As for the hair typing system: I’m not bothered by it. But it took developing a level of detachment. I only really refer to it when describing my hair/texture for context or looking for styling inspo and tutorials because it helps me to have a frame of reference that best reflects my hair type. So I personally don’t believe that the system ITSELF is divisive rather it triggers deeply ingrained texurist beliefs about type 4 that existed way before the system. In other words, the typing system is only a symptom but not the actual root of the problem.
Love your approach to discussing this. Your hair looks so healthy. I would love to see a video about how you care for your knotless box braids. I want to get knotless braids, but my hair sheds like crazy when I take down braids, and I dont keep them in longer than 3 weeks. I know a little shedding is normal, but sheesh, I feel like I lose half my hair.
These type of videos along with your vlogs, are literally my life line. Please bless us with an updated hair care routine, mine is really similar to yours and it's so beautiful that I can finally relate to someone. 💗

I personally like the hair typing system, until high-school I'd always get relaxers and never knew what my actual natural hair looked like. Before transition from relax to completely natural i was watching people with much looser curls doing their hair and learning from them and when my hair finally grew out it was 4c and it was very confusing until i learned about the hair typing system. Now everyone i watch has the same hair type and me and my hair has grown so much past my shoulders because I'm following advice and tips for my hair not someone else's. I think personally theres nothing wrong with the hair typing system just the way some people use it.
Same, I was so shook that my hair didn’t look like all the natural hair UA-camr I was following 😂😂. But eventually I found hair UA-camr whose hair looked more like mine so I knew what to expect going into styles.
same. and while everyone says it’s not necessary to know it in order to take care of your hair (which i sorta agree with) it’s still very helpful to search up “4c twist out” on youtube and get an idea of what it would look like on my hair. a 3c twist out and 4c twist out won’t look the same so it’s nice to see a sort of picture of what your hair may turn out like. ik what products my hair likes so i don’t need to watch natural hair youtubers for the products they use for their hair porosity to keep it moisturized etc etc. i watch them to see how styles would look on me, or what type of natural hair extensions they would use in their hair styles etc. so i hate when people say that the hair typing system is completely useless because it truly isn’t. sorry for the rant😭
Exactly…most ppl who complain about the hair typing system are type 2-3 Anyways…it’s very helpful for us 4c girls to search up natural girls similar to ours
@@Akhona3 EXACTLY! The ones with looser curl patterns complain and dismiss the hair typing system NOW are the same ones benefitting from it the most years ago. UA-cam trends such as this shows how easily people rid of things when its no longer benefiting certain groups. The hair typing system is still valid as it helps many determine how their hair may look using similar techniques.
@@TumultBoy Period! Even for straightening/ twist outs/ hair remedy tutorials. I’m not watching a type 3 person teach me how to do any of that. I need to see results from a type 4c person. Ppl need to cut this “hair type is not important” mentality coz it’s VERY important!…Ive gotten in the habit of blocking any natural creator who says it’s not coz at this point; they only say that coz they just want views 🙄

My experience being a Natutal i've learned: Moisture Protective styling Trim when necessary, don't get scissor happy. A clean and hydrated scalp whether you choose oil or grease its up to you and your hair. And hydrate. Lots and lots of water. Think of your hair as a plant🌿 and your body as the roots, if not hydrating the roots (your body) your hair is not going to grow and thrive the way you're expecting. Much love💜
Knotless braids grew my hair so much and was a perfect transition style. Wearing them mostly down and oiling with olive oil every few days. Can’t seem to stand them anymore though
Hair is such an intimate part of people, and it can take a long time truly accept and love it. It's a process, and just as it may take time to love a part of your body, it may take time to love your hair in its natural, gorgeous state. People are so caught up in hair "types" or texturized when what actually matters is the health of your hair, it's part of your self-care just as the rest of your body is. I don't know who needs to hear this but ALL hair in its natural state is so utterly feminine and beautiful, like jesus Kianna your hair looks like clouds!
If every body do that . Where will be the afro hair 🤎 there will be black people who try to seems like something they can't be . So sad I love my 4C hair I have never wear something like wig expect my hair Real Nappy 🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
You nailed all of the points in this video. I just cut my waist length hair recently, and it felt really liberating to not feel attached to long hair. It was the best feeling to also cut my wash time in half too😅
I don’t mind hair types, if used correctly. So like knowing that I have 3c/4a low porosity hair has helped me find products and know how to take care of it. My mom has a looser curl pattern and the products that she uses doesn’t work on mine. So I think if you use the hair type method use it with a healthy mindset not to compare textures whether what’s good or bad.. if that makes sense ❤️
My, my, my!!! I feel you on the blow drying and styling your hair. Because I follow so many naturalists that really don't do that and they style their hair so well. But when I let my hair dry naturally, for one it shrinks like crazy but I find it hard to upkeep daily without overmanipulating and causing it to break or shed badly. :( But when I blow dry it out and style, I don't have this problem and I can go 2 weeks like that. So I was really pleased to hear you say your grandmother as a stylist recommend blow drying. I needed to hear that because it was just confirmation of what I was feeling but didn't really know how to explain it! Your hair is gorg & I had to hit the follow. Thanks again!!!
You inspired me to start wearing my natural hair out and actually learning to take care of it. I used to get protective religiously 11/12 months of the year. I’ve inspired others to go natural and wear their hair too! Girl I’m telling you the domino effect ! Thank you 🙏🏾

I love how you give advice, it’s not overly critical and judgmental. I can feel your sincerity in genuinely trying to help other girls become more self assured and confident. Thank you
I’m so glad you mentioned that, because I’ve always thought the hair type categorization chart is THE BANE OF THE NATURAL HAIR COMMUNITY’S EXISTENCE!!! Loved the vid, btw😊
As a black person I felt like in this video I felt very tell you I could definitely agree on what you're trying to get her point and like my hair is frizzy
You have beautiful hair, like honestly wow, that shape is so flattering. Honestly I stopped caring about my hair in the sense that I stopped doing all the treatments because it wasn't working, I live in protective styles, but wigs, my scalp just can't tolerate braids anymore which makes me so sad. I believe in stretching hair too, my hair thrives when it is stretched.
Your Spanish is awesome! My hair literally is the same volume as yourself I did the same thing u did, not care 😂. Did protective styles and twist outs my whole life!
Your hair is looking beautiful!! Making me want to rock a blow out but i damaged mine from straightening so much my last year of college 😭 I’m trying to give my hair a break atm
I discovered the same about my hair texture/curl pattern after continuously trimming and growing out my heat damage. A patch of hair in the back of my head that I thought was purely heat damage turned out to naturally be a completely different curl pattern from the rest of my hair. It's annoying cause the curls hang much longer than in the front and I have to cut it more often. 😭
I feel like this is a sign. My hair has plateaued & has been breaking off a lot more recently from wash n go’s. I’ve honestly have just been over trying to wear my hair curly at this point due to the breakage & wash n gos that only last a day. So I’ve had this idea to start stretching/straightening my hair to help with length retention, but i wasn’t completely sure if that is what i should do. Hearing that stretching is what helped you confirms that it is what i should do. ✨

Yesss!!
This has been one of the most important things I've learned since I've started my natural hair journey 3 years ago
you’re so pretty omg
ur so pretty
I finished my hair transition one year ago and since then I’m still trying to figure out how to take care of it because I stayed more than 10 years with straight hair. What I love most about it is that every day I learn something different, it’s like I’m taking care of a child that grows with all the love that I give to it. When I started my transition your videos were kind of a relief and an inspiration to myself❤️
♥️
I did a big chop 4 years ago, because although I was natural, I had a ton of heat damage. Because I had short hair, I couldn’t really do anything with it, and that showed me that I didn’t NEED to do anything with it. My hair grew so fast. The length has slowed down because the longer it got, the more I manipulated it, so I’m trying to reduce the manipulation again so I can reach my desired hair length.
Yup. My hair is like a cat or a beautiful man; the more I leave her alone the more she loves me♥️
@@Mia-sp8jc hahaha true
Little wise angel!! The “confidence takes practice” is another perfect Kianna quote to add to the list ❤️❤️
Ok but can we appreciate how good Kianna’s hair looks?!?!
FanTASTIC video!! I loved it so much that it took me double the time to watch it 😆🙌🏾 my favourite part of your video is how healthy your natural hair is and how comfortable you are with yourself and in your own skin! Keep up the awesome work girlie!!! 💛💛💛
I absolutely enjoyed this video💕💕
Please make the video on;
1. An updated hair care routine
2. Your hack on knotless braids
3. How you blowout your hair without getting heat damage.
Thank you!😘
I personally like the hair typing system, until high-school I'd always get relaxers and never knew what my actual natural hair looked like.
Hair porosity is only relevant to learn about water retention and what products work for u. Ppl need to cut this “hair type is not important” mentality coz it’s VERY important!…Ive gotten in the habit of blocking any natural creator who says it’s not coz at this point; they only say that coz they just want views 🙄
can you speak more Spanish PLEASE and talk more about your journey learning Spanish and your experience in Colombia. It’s inspiring as someone trying to learn Spanish themselves
i agreeee
Colombia
Yes, that updated hair care routine would be nice🥰
But this style is everything! I'm obsessed with curls on blown-out hair
this video was enough for me to purchase a gud hair people sampler pack 😂 i’m so excited to finally treat myself hair right! thank you for everything you do. i’ve been watching you for years and i’ll be here for many more years to come 💕💗
My experience being a Natutal i've learned:
Moisture
Protective styling
Trim when necessary, don't get scissor happy.
Much love💜
Yes!! please do an updated haircare routine ♥️♥️
This was the most honest hair advice I never thought I needed 😌
Knotless braids grew my hair so much and was a perfect transition style. Wearing them mostly down and oiling with olive oil every few days. Can’t seem to stand them anymore though
Your knotless braids lasted for how long?
@@luyandamthabela3334 2 months at a time.
You are really inspiring and I love the approach you have through this natural hair discussion!! I would loovee n updated haire care routine babee
this is so helpful! I'd love an updated hair routine !💗
Your hair is so beautiful 🥺
I need ur updated her routine😍😍
Especially if it includes ur hair is styled in this video!! QUEEEN❕
Keeping your hair moisturized, stretched, and trimmed (when necessary) are literally the KEYS 😩🤌🏾
If every body do that . Where will be the afro hair 🤎 there will be black people who try to seems like something they can't be . So sad I love my 4C hair I have never wear something like wig expect my hair
Real Nappy 🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾

You ooze confidence and your hair is gorgeous!
I love your vibe, so calm and relaxing
She’s absolutely gorgeous 😍😍😍
This is like a hair advice therapy video 😍😍 I love it, so soothing.
your hair is so beautifullll!!!!
I have the same hair type as you, & I think the porosity is the most important part! What products do you like?
Okay but can we please talk about how absolutely gorgeous Kianna looks with her natural hair actually she slays any hairstyle she wears
Yes please! to sharing the updated wash day routine and your tips for protecting your hair under knotless braids. I’m so worried about my edges
aw your hair looks so cute!
Yess!! please do an updated hair wash routine♥️ love you hair so much, it’s beautiful
Yes please! Updated wash and blow dry routine 🌸🌸
Literally get excited when kianna posts
You inspired me to start wearing my natural hair out and actually learning to take care of it. I used to get protective religiously 11/12 months of the year. I’ve inspired others to go natural and wear their hair too! Girl I’m telling you the domino effect ! Thank you 🙏🏾
Your hair is gorgeous!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love when she has random British accent burst outs😩😭😭
would luv to see the updated haircare routine!

You inspire me to take WAY better care of my hair 😂❤️ I’ve been wearing weaves and wigs just ripping my hair out! Thank uuu for these 🥰

Your essence is awesome, this video was recommended to me, I'm 17 months locd today, I'm in love with my hair its lovely to be committed to myself and hair, and for me its spiritual and a nod to my ancestors.
Its been a while Kianna
I am so glad you are talking about this
Love you💕😘
It took a long time to embrace my hair and Kianna was part of that process, thank you love
Yo - this is so real. Keep the confidence and love the hair style.
Wow , your hair is thriving Kianna 💕❤️
I love how you give advice, it’s not overly critical and judgmental. I can feel your sincerity in genuinely trying to help other girls become more self assured and confident. Thank you
I love your voice it’s so smoothing
I’m so glad you mentioned that, because I’ve always thought the hair type categorization chart is THE BANE OF THE NATURAL HAIR COMMUNITY’S EXISTENCE!!! Loved the vid, btw😊
yes please do an updated hair ruteeeen
omg full updated hair care routine please PLEASEEEE :)
As a black person I felt like in this video I felt very tell you I could definitely agree on what you're trying to get her point and like my hair is frizzy
Watching you 5 years ago until now, I'm so so proud 👏 🥲
What a role model 🥰
You have beautiful hair, like honestly wow, that shape is so flattering.
Honestly I stopped caring about my hair in the sense that I stopped doing all the treatments because it wasn't working, I live in protective styles, but wigs, my scalp just can't tolerate braids anymore which makes me so sad. I believe in stretching hair too, my hair thrives when it is stretched.
Your spanish is so perfect, hasta tienes el acento colombiano. Un beso desde República Dominicana preciosa🇩🇴✨🙌🏾
Your Spanish is awesome! My hair literally is the same volume as yourself I did the same thing u did, not care 😂. Did protective styles and twist outs my whole life!
Yes yes yes I need to see the updated hair care routine
It’s getting so big and even more pretty hair goals fr

You give me so much life! Definitely going to try blow drying my hair.
Your hair is looking beautiful!! Making me want to rock a blow out but i damaged mine from straightening so much my last year of college 😭 I’m trying to give my hair a break atm
You are absolutely gorgeous!😍
Yess kiana you inspire me to wear mine aswell!💞
Your videos are just so refreshing and relaxing to watch. 💚
I love that one curl in the back lol, but it looks like a tail if I have it out.
The firmness, the playfulness, the femininity. The CHARM honey!
NEED your updated hair routine ASAP!! also howwwww do you care for your hair in braids? what helps you retain that length in that style?
I feel like this is a sign. My hair has plateaued & has been breaking off a lot more recently from wash n go’s. I’ve honestly have just been over trying to wear my hair curly at this point due to the breakage & wash n gos that only last a day. So I’ve had this idea to start stretching/straightening my hair to help with length retention, but i wasn’t completely sure if that is what i should do. Hearing that stretching is what helped you confirms that it is what i should do. ✨
Hi there. Almost 5 minutes into watching you and I had to stop and write this. You are so young and have a great understanding of self. You have said so many deep truths that all 🖤 and 🤎 people need to hear. If you cannot see your stripped down self and honor and appreciate it then you can not project self love because it's not there in the first place. We are given a body and should honor it, not pick it apart and destroy it. Nature said each of our bodies was good enough to be brought into existence, WE ALL ARE CAPABLE AND WORTHY... NAPPY HAIR OR NOT! Leave a positive mark on as many lives as you can without destroying yours!
