The gentrification talk and message in the beginning 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽you a real one for that!!! Im a native of Hawaii and many just dont understand the message to not move there. Similar to moving to Brazil. Mahalo. Mahalo. Mahalo!
THIS. Im from South Africa and the amount of people from the US that move to Cape Town/Johannesburg here and then go on social media and boast about how much more affordable everything is and how they live so well and happy here, bringing even more people in, when it’s literally cheaper because theyre from a 1st world country and are now in what is a 3rd world country, so obvs because of currency changes things are gonna be more affordable to them and then as a result, to make more profit, things are being made even more expensive which hurts people that are actually from here
LOL hair math is so real, me doing a wash n go 2 days before my birthday to make it sure it's the right amount of defined + voluminous but not too frizzy and not too flat. issalot
Concerning the hair, mini twists on natural hair only are a game changer. It allows a certain versatility, reduce how much you manipulate your hair, doesn't tug on the hair like braids can, can wash easily if necessary (have to be careful with it tho) It might shrink and by that extent, u might feel like a little boy but u got stay consistent
You mean with your natural hair right? I think that's my favourite hairstyle lol, I get so tired of braids and I can't wash it properly cause it gets heavy, and one time I had braids that was sooo itchy..like it made my skin itch, I had to cut it short so it barely touched my skin. 😂😂😂
I think it's great that you're mindful of where you travel and how it affects the locals. Many travelers, especially from Western countries with strong currencies, often overlook the impact they have on local prices. This can contribute to inflation and make living costs more expensive for the locals.
I recently started doing my own hair and I was dreading it. But girl, it's one of the best things I've learned how to do. Granted, it takes a lot of time but 1.) you're saving money and 2.) you're building a great relationship with yourself.
The character building in the hair situation i believe is to not let a person being mean and rude touch your hair....and most importantly speak up for yourself
OMFG I WAS JUST THINKING LIKE DAMON WAS JUST IN BRASILLL THEY SHOULD LINKKK 🥹lawd my heart Will VICIOUSLY PALPITATE WITH A COLLAB. Geez I am Fckin wheezing…. *grabs inhaler * 🤣💀
girl i live in NY too, long island though. But when i do go into the city i completely understand the feeling of self consciousness and genuine sense of danger when people comment on your body or even just look a certain way at you. I totally empathize contigo.
I learned how to braid my own hair after quarantine and I haven't had anyone do it since! Sometimes it isn't great and parting my hair makes me want to shave it off but it is so rewarding to do it and it has become my form of self care😉
Babes learning to do your own hair is truly a super power, but also so tiring(but as a girly whose tryna save money, and take care of your own hair, it's soooo worth it)
Everything you mentioned about Spanish, especially the podcast and books sounds so awesome! I'm currently learning Spanish and you're one of my fav UA-camrs!
I had a similar hair experience with a hair dresser I was so flabbergasted, angry and sad that I decided to start doing my own hair and girl let me tell you IT IS FLIPPING AMAZING . I can literally wake up at 3 am and do my hair I dont have to wait and schedule with people. it such a liberating skills to have in your portfolio. doing my hair now is 'me time ' . I have a whole audiobooks , podcasts ,music playlist and movies dedicated to my 'braiding day ' my hair have grown so much it look so healthy our relationship is at it best. give it try it wroth it.
black girl hair math is so real 😭😭 literally takes true planning. i started learning to braid my hair for the same reasons!! esp w/ lack of quality stylists/decent prices in nyc. you’ll do great!! just takes practice :)
I had a bit of a bad experience with braiders in the past which led me to just do my own hair, everything from them shit-talking about my hair in French in front of me (not knowing I can understand it a little) to them complaining my natural hair was too thick and long and it would take a lot of time to braid, I even recall one time a braider was just so sloppy with my braids, just rushing to get it done and not taking any time or consideration. so I saved myself time, money and mental stress and since doing my own hair I get way more confidence and compliments too! It's such a liberating feeling doing your own hair and having the praise from other black women is really sweet too.
I'm so sorry about the hair stylist experience you had. As someone who's done hair for a pretty long time (got me through college), I HIGHLY recommend being a helicopter client and literally GETTING OUT OF THE CHAIR if necessary. Learning to braid my own hair (before I installed my microlocs) was probably one of the best things to happen to me. I have three sisters and I learned because we were in the suburbs, and I'm a Nigerian who grew up with my hair always done. I would (and still) style my hair on a biweekly basis, I colour it when I want, I take care of my own hair, and I have only had three salon experiences in my life (only ONE was good). So I'm always appalled when other black women describe their salon, braider, or hair stylist experiences.
Girl I feel you about the hair thing! I hate going to braiders who care more about the style than the actual health of the hair. Im trying to learn how to braid as well
4:25 I completely get what you mean!!! I've been thinking about doing it too but my fear isn't even the braiding part but the parting. I'm going through a hair journey since I went natural over a year ago. I love the way you styled your hair and I've watched your tutorial on it. I completely forgot that wigs don't have to be full frontal and buss downs all the time hahaha.
Can I just say that your videos are so calming!! Especially now when i'm having such a stressful time, just sensing your vibe through the screen helps me a lot. Continue what you're doing, Kianna, you are simply amazing ❤️
Watching this, when you talk about certain things it looks like you’re on the verge of tears. Hopefully I’m wrong, but if not, I hope you feel better about the things you want to improve. I also a couple years ago moved out to a big city by myself and all it took was faith, community and time before I tapped into my true potential. I hope these words find you grace other than that I love your videos and you are def one of my inspirations when it comes to content creation
Ever thought of locing your hair? I was so overwhelmed with all the hair math I had to do and I loced my hair and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. It’s just once a month maintenance (for me personally) and that’s literally it
A good beginner braids strategy is crochet where you braid your own hair (which is a healthier alternative than braiding extensions in with your own hair and breaking it 😬) and crochet the braid into a pre braided braid of extension hair. I’ve been doing it for years and my hair is much healthier for it in comparison to get regular box braids
THANK YOU for mentioning the gentrification of these places. #1 reason why I couldn't see myself moving unless I did my part becoming a Colombian citizen, paid my taxes, and made a salary in Colombian pesos
Coucou Kianna !! Girl black hair math is SO real. Which is why I love braids i can work out do what I want and not worry about what my hair will look like. Alsoooo !!I had a very bad hair salon experience the lady burned me and I literally got a horrible scab then had the audacity to tell me oh you have some dryness then scratched it! Now I have a horrible scar on the FRONT of my head. Ugh! Def won’t be going back to her. Back to your vid tho I love this so much and you’re forever an travel , style, & life inspo. xx oh et je voudrais déplacer à Paris aussi. Tu es vraiment un rayon de soleil Oh and I would like to move to Paris too! You are truly a ray of sunshine 🥹
I was like really, are you!!??? I'm returning to school to learn Spanish. I already know some but I've been slacking. I want to be around others who speak it as well. Hybrid classes for sure. I love your chill videos as well. Day in the life, Q&A, etc
Having your hair done can be such a demeaning experience and it shouldn’t be. I’ve experienced it all since the age of 5 even when I used to get relaxers for a good portion of my life. I made the big decision last year just to cut it all off and people still came at me with negativity since I was always known as the girl with “long good hair.” I plan on getting it chopped down again and dyed for the summer and have no plans on growing it back out-at the most I’ll do a mini fro like I’ve been doing. At the end of the day you have to do what you feel is best for your hair + your mental because some of these hair stylists simply do not care and only want money. To me all my hair held nothing but weight physically and emotionally…it’s a journey. I’m sorry you experienced that and you’ve always been beautiful ❤
I’ve never heard the phrase black girl math before. I’ve been thinking to myself for ages that my black hair feels like math. Very crazy to hear another black girl say it. Very validating too
Learning how to do my braids was one of the best things I did! It takes hours but its awesome. Also, it took me a long time to find a good natural hair stylist but I found love at a hair school that specializes in natural hair. Not sure if they have one of those in New York, but if they do maybe check them out. The prices are usually reasonable and because they specialize in natural hair, they really focus on care. Best of luck, and I am excited about your possibly including spanish on your channel: hablo un poco de espanol pero quiero aprender mas! Have a good day :)
Ayy I love the chat videos, it's like we're facetiming🥹 I feel your pain of getting so much of your hair cut; learning how to do your own box braids is such a game changer and honestly it sounds harder than it actually is. You have to find a gripping method that works for you! Tbh my first couple braids looked wonky (especially the back) but i didn't care since i was so proud of myself. Practice makes definitely perfect. Passion twists, butterfly/soft locs, spring twists, mini twists, cornrows, etc. are also worth learning
hiiii ki I just graduated from nyu and now have more free time to study languages and travel. What perfect timing for Spanish videos :) also book club sounds like an amazing idea 🫶🏾
It's notable that you brought up Americans relocating to Latin America without embracing the language or culture. It parallels the situation of migrants who come to America and never fully learn English, relying on government assistance and residing in subsidized housing. However, there are also successful migrants who establish businesses, move their families to the suburbs, and genuinely assimilate into American culture.
love this video! btw an optometrist said sunglasses that dont have uv protection and are cheap can damage ur eyes. this one girl on tiktok had a brown spot in her eye because of it. be careful girlie! love ya
