    Thanks so much for watching! Please feel free to like, subscribe, and grow your facial hair. Here's a video timeline:
    00:00 - Intro!
    01:10 - Tip 1: How to interact with the couple, wedding coordinator, and DJ when preparing to film the dancing at the reception.
    02:57 - Tip 2: A way to light the dance floor and make it look incredible, even when there is awful venue lighting.
    06:23 - Tip 3: My go-to technique to get more energetic dancing shots that show how much fun the wedding guests were having.
    08:09 - Tip 4: The exact way I shoot to make editing dancing footage super easy in post (it's almost editing itself!)
    Thanks!

      Matt WhoisMatt Johnson - are you using AF when your filming 'tight' on the dance floor. I'm looking at either a A7s II or the A6500 the A6500 on paper would seem to be better for this because of the better AF. I figured if I put a 16mm on and used clear image zoom I could also get 3 different focal lengths FF equivalent of 24mm 36mm and 48mm.

      Super helpful :) Question: how many of these Arri 150's do you use to help light a dance floor?

      +mark shirley hey Mark! Not usually, because there's so much movement and faces that the camera would have difficulty picking on what to focus on.

    Also, I recommend shooting with an ultra-wide lens (11-16mm) and a mono-pod up high when filming a crowded dance floor, especially when they do line dances. It's a cool shot to see the entire dance floor doing the same dance. I would also film close-up dance b-roll at 120 frames for dramatic slow-mo.

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 років тому +1

      +AdventureSingh I usually put the light on the side of the dance floor on the opposite side of the dj or band's lights. It really depends on the size of the venue and dance floor etc.
      I don't ever bounce it though due to wanting a direct light that offers better lens flares and intensity.

    Hey matt do you have a video about how to film a good first dance for the couple? I have a wedding coming up in 2 months where I will be filing the first dance and wonder what is the best approach to filming it and what equipment (apart from my camera of course) to use during the emotional highlight of the evening.

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 років тому +2

      +Kevin Murphy hey Kevin! Definitely planning on covering that in the future. I film the first dance a little different than this because I don't want to get as close. Usually I'm on a 24 or 50mm getting wider shots on a Glidecam, while my second shooter is on a tighter 135mm getting faces.

    My question is where is the best place to place the light so it is out of the way and still effective? Also is one light enough for let's say an average size venue? One more let's say were filming at a church that is decently dark. Do you ever use a mountable light? I know most churches have some sort of restrictions from photo/video but I'm just curious.

    Is there a LUT that you could recommend for lighting scenarios like this? I’m still wondering how to color grade dark scenes with this kind of purple lighting. Have a z6ii and shooting flat profile 8-bit.

    Hi Matt
    Thanks for another interesting video.
    Do you ever have any problems synchronising the dancing to the music that you use in post, (as it is different to what the DJ was playing at the time of filming)?

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 років тому

      +Michael Brampton thanks Michael! I never listen to the actual music they were dancing to when editing the dancing parts of the video. I go more for the feel and look that the people were exhibiting while dancing. Two stepping has a different feel from booty grinding etc hahaha.

      @63MacGuy 6 років тому

      I was wondering that as well. I usually put some dancing clips from a certain song or two then lay down the track but the lips don’t match up on songs like Shout or Sweet Caroline everyone’s singing the songs.

      What about the legal aspects of clips with licensed music? I want to create a video as a gift for my niece with footage I took from her wedding and upload it to UA-cam but I don't want to violate any rules and laws.

    I'm curious how you keep things in focus. I think I saw in another video you use a manual focus lens. What kind of aperture are you shooting with, etc? It doesn't look wide open. Thanks!

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 років тому

      Hey Sam! For dancing I'm usually wide open and manually focusing. It really depends on the situation, but ALWAYS manual focusing for the most part. :)

    Another great vid! Lots of amazing tips. What are your thoughts on if the couple is very resistant to the idea of lighting? I've had a few that feel it 'spoils the mood' even after showing them the different between no lighting versus having a lighting. I've explained that my camera cannot see in the dark, so to speak.

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 років тому

      +Milkman Murdock thanks! I always talk to the couple about this beforehand, show them examples, and do everything I can to explain how it will make their wedding film better. I've never had a couple say no, but I have had to do some convincing before lol.

    Matt.... Thanks so much for your videos, they are fantastic. After 12yrs of wanting to do this, Im finally making the jump into starting my own business and buying proper gear to film weddings. Ill be trying out some of my new gear by filming some at my own wedding here in two weeks. lol.
    Two questions: Have you moved to LED lights yet? Are you looking at other units or putting an LED light in the ARRI?Also, If you put two lights on the dance floor, where do you usually place them? 180 degrees from another, 90, 45?
    Ok, that was more like 4 questions.

      +openg8 thank you! Nope, I'm still using the Arri 150. I have heard good things about the Came-TV Boltzen 55W led light if you wanna check that out. I usually only use one light. :)

    • @whoismatt

      +Brian C hey Brian! The Arri is built a little stronger. The Lowel is a bit more cheaply constructed, but still very solid. Either light is great!

      High on the opposite side of the dance floor from the DJ so I dont compete with his lighting.

    Matt! Just recently started following your work and videos on here. Awesome, brother. Question: Do you ask your couples if you can set up lights at the reception or do you just do it? Do you use just one or 2 lights? Ever have a couple that told you to take them down because it was ruining the "mood" that they wanted for their reception?
    I love the buddy system idea. I shoot with my wife as well, but most of the time we're filming two separate things in two separate parts of the room. I think the buddy system will help us capture better quality footage to use in editing, as well as put us closer together to enjoy the night TOGETHER :)

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 років тому +1

      +Bobby Layden thanks Bobby! Yes, I always talk to the couple about it when I meet with them before the wedding. I tell them about lighting and how important it is for filming good reception footage.
      I just use one Arri 150 as it is plenty bright enough while still being unobtrusive. It won't mess up the mood of the reception :)
      Hope the buddy system helps you too! My wife and I still cover a ton of ground when we are together because we can get great shots in 10-20 seconds then move on to another part of the dance floor.

    Quick Question Matt,
    While getting in the action where people are dancing have you ever gotten bumped while they are dancing? also have you filmed people that turn away from you that dont want to be filmed?

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 років тому +1

      +Jack Browning hey Jack! Yeah I bump into people and they bump into me all the time! Haha it's part of dancing. People don't usually turn away from me because I'm sneaky. I can usually go behind anyone that may be camera shy and film who they are dancing with. It's like a game 😜

      Thanks Matt. Could you recommend a P.P. for weddings that I wouldn't have to grade.
      I have a fast computer (i7 4770 quad core 3.5Ghz / 32 gb of ram and a GTX 1070 with 4-gb of ram) that struggles with a lot of color grading with 3 tracks of video on the timeline during the multi-camera edit and I really hate to use an intermediate codec (Cineform) due to time restraints. Thanks again,
