I am a postie, serving since November 2016... we have ABSOLUTELY been told to prioritise everything EXCEPT letters. Simon Thompson damn well knows this is the case and the pathetic snake tries to wrangle his way out of answering the question. Since March 2020 we were told to NOT DELIVER letters and instead only focus on TRACKED or SPECIAL DELIVERY ITEMS - this was often due to low staff numbers and sickness, but even when we did have a full quota of staff Royal Mail bosses refused to pay us the necessary overtime in order to fulfil our service obligations. It is NOT our fault we are overwhelmed and cannot cope with the workloads. Royal Mail bosses track us with the PDAs (handheld computers that measure our delivery speeds etc) and they brought the PDA in to try and prove what they believed - that we sit around twiddling our thumbs drinking tea. The PDAs have proven the exact opposite, that our deliveries are too big and that we are running around like blue ass flies to try and complete our deliveries. It is a daily battle for us to convince managers that the ONLY way we would clear our deliveries is often with overtime being paid. The reason we were unable to deliver letters is because Royal Mail bosses and the executive board have not given us sufficient staff numbers to cope with the oversized delivery routes, they have repeatedly treated us like crap whilst lining their own pockets and paying out millions to shareholders. Our van fleet is an absolute disgrace with the majority of our vehicles barely road worthy. Darren, thank you for exposing this rat for exactly what he is. If only. But I'm afraid you're wrong. DJ will never be appointed to any government because he would show up the shameful lack of knowledge and experience of all his colleagues. Simply put, he's just TOO GOOD TO PROMOTE.
What a brilliant MP, I worked for Royal Mail as a postman for 26 years and all the BS coming out of those senior bosses sounds so familiar. The pressures on postal workers is horrendous and there has been a bullying culture from office managers for a very long time.
I worked for Royal mail for 10 years and during that time contracting Luekiemia, and was treated like a inconvenience, they could not get rid of me fast enough. Plus bullying was rife😢
Simon Thompson bonus £140k and a salary of £540k and still can’t answer the questions , give him a mail bag and let him deliver the post see how humble he’d become , doing a real job.
When Simon mentions being "out and about" talking with his "team/workers" he actually goes to individual offices after all the posties have left to go out on deliveries to avoid any confrontation, or hard questions.. and he's being escorted by a security team. What exactly does that say about his relationship with the workers?? 😂
It's not just the pay though, it's employees being scared of losing their jobs for bringing up these issues as mentioned at the end. As is what always happens when a state run utility is privatised, it becomes profit first, everything else, they just bs around.
The gurning faces coming from the Royal Mail bosses here is pricesless. They are so used to being able to bully and brow beat their subordinates, that when someone doesn't bow and scrape infront of them, it's a tremendous shock to their very being.
Royal Mail was sold for £1bn less than it was worth eight years ago. Money has been shared out to investors who took the shares at a cut price and have made fortunes hand over fist...whilst the postal workers have been treated like cattle.
Anybody could have purchased those shares though, they were floated. They were sold in secrecy to specific elites, any man and his dog could have bought those cheap shares.
This is what happens when you take publicly owned services and put them into private hands. Before privatisation royal mail had an excellent record for customer service and it was always a job for life should a worker choose. This is heartbreaking to see a long established , thriving public company being operated in this manner in private hands. Until these CEOs got their grubby hands on it and ruined the lives of so many due to a software system that had got these folks convicted of fraud and jailed. These were long standing employees with nothing else like this on their records. Fkn tragic that a proper investigation of the software could have sorted this out before people lives were destroyed. This should be the poster child of the dangers of privatisation.
They need to be investigated and charged with perjury immediately. I'm sick to death of lying in politics, business and life. You only have to look at America to see where we are heading and its bloody dangerous. It should be a crime to lie if an MP or a media outlet.
16:40 He started answering the question, but when Jones called him on his pathetic answer, he then suddenly needed clarity on the question. These people are cowards. Shameful
I live in Scotland and I dont receive letters for around 2 weeks after they've been sent out. It absolutely is happening, they are lying. I used to get letter everyday or 3 times a week at the very least, now it's once a fortnight or even more. NHS appointment letters being received on the day of the appointment or when it's passed. My husband's cancer appointments and his chest x-ray appointment last week are all being missed because of this.
I left RM 6 years ago. This was prevalent then. No industrial action, no pandemic to blame. RM simply doesn't have the resources to deliver the USO nor does it have the management to handle the situation. These guys sat in this committee and lied through their teeth.
As an older single person, I value the few words that I exchange with my postman, whom I know by name, when he delivers to me. Do I now have to worry that I might be unduly delaying him by doing so? Should I, and doubtless many thousands of other elderly people, forego this brief human contact to avoid potential difficulties for my postman? It's a sad world, increasingly made sadder.
Lol, the government is above the law so they would be no point, haven't seen any prosecutions over lives lost by not going to the table with the NHS. Life's lost due to government policies and noone gets jailed, how corrupt is that
PMQs is an entertainment to show the population how well they're served. Boris Johnson lied quite openly and couldn't be challenged because of the rules.
Darren is truly amazing. Such a shame that there are so few others like him. I would even go as far to say that most of our current MPs should also be squirming under his scrutiny for their callousness, corruption and incompetence.

The "PDA's REPORTS" are not like Sat Nav in your car, Managers cannot see a Dot on their computer screens moving down the street. The reports are "historic" meaning they only detail activity up to the moment the report was requested. However, the point is mute given Managers can request as many reports as they wish, effectively giving them close to "Real Time Reporting". In reality it is easier for the Manager to run a single report when the Postman completes his route and have the conversation in the Office the next morning if there are problems......The Royal Mail system can also highlight any "dwell times" above say 5 minutes across the Delivery Office (I.e. for Every Postman working that day). Big Brother is well and truly here folks .......surprisingly Royal Mail have not linked their PDA Reporting system to automatically pay overtime if the Postman works past his finishing time to complete the delivery. Postmen will still need to beg their line Manager who, if he remembers to, may authorise the excess time....... maybe ?
This wasn’t a committee, this was a public trial. Taking testimony, entering evidence into the record, cross examining statements against them and tearing their credibility to shreds. Fantastic work!

If Darren Jones had been PM since 2019, Boris Johnson would NEVER have attended PMQs. Had he done so, he would not have escaped from the chamber in one piece with his skin still intact. This man Jones is a breath of air and an example of what an MP should be doing to earn his salary.
As an MP he has time to prep for this and ask the right questions. As PM he just wouldn't be able to do this. It would just be great if we had PM's and cabinet ministers that were not in awe of private sector scumbags who wine and dine them
That 56 year old has probably been a postie for 20 odd years. Have they forgotten all the years this person was going fast, all forgotten now that they are older?! Absolute joke of a company. This lot should go to jail for perjury.
Brilliant work Darren Jones! As so many commentators have said, this is the standard of questioning we expect. With many years business experience, I can say that the replies given by senior management such as these questioned, is par for the course in deflection, obfuscation and evasion. Good to see that Darren is fully conversant with these techniques
This is the sort of leader I would like to see in government. Holding people to their actions & seems to actually care. Taking no BS. I really like this guy. He would get my vote
That was a masterclass in how these people need to be dealt with, far too many politicians are going very soft when it comes to questioning in these circumstances and its all about money as per usual, this was a brilliant watch. well done
The answer is very simple and twofold. Firstly, return royal mail to a public utility. Second all postal workers get a fair and reasonable share of materials and are paid to deliver it regardless of time. This means mail is delivered quickly if they want a shorter day! Mail is an essential service and must be owned by the public as obviously demonstrated by these greedy jokers you’ve allowed to be in charge of something as paramount as the postal service.
Threefold: haul Vince Cable and George Osborne and Danny Alexander before parliament and demand how the hell they allowed it to be sold in the first place.
The target should be delivering mail.....not HOW it is done.....this is 'Taylorism' gone mad.....'Time & Motion' studies....spying on workers....a management strategy, which was introduced with the first factories over 100 years ago. Management think it's behaviour (spying) is 'enlightened'.....because the 'panopticon' is now electronic!
His smirk says otherwise. He's acting like he knows he will get away with it all. At the end of the day he will leave with enough of a payout not to need to work again for the rest of his life.

These bosses get bonuses for treating their workers with contempt! Neither wonder that the Post Office bosses like Vennells and co drove their employees to suicide! I stop and speak to anyone I want and for however long I want, been postie for 13 years nothing ever been said about it? Seems different offices and management have different views on everything
I was a postman in the late 1960s and 1970s. The service to the public was excellent. You could pretty well guarantee a first class letter would be delivered anywhere in the country by breakfast time next morning. There were two collections and deliveries a day and there was even a delivery on Christmas morning.

I would rather see a none Conservative and none Labour government since both are lazy, lobbyist focused, career Politicians who are in this career for self serving purposes.

I work for Royal Mail and seeing Simon Thompson being humiliated was very enjoyable.
It's great to see an MP making these people answer his questions 👏
Chair is excellent
Unequivocally based Darren Jones. The man is a national treasure.
Based and accountability pilled
Quite a lot - to put it mildly. What an utterly odious creepy individual he is. I wouldn't let him clean my toilet.
Typical management looking after each other. Bastards
He’s a complete tool.
It tells me that he knows full well he deserves a good hiding.
Then he will make money, out of the innocent workers.
If Industrail Action is the problem then pay people fairly. Hate these liars.
It's not just the pay though, it's employees being scared of losing their jobs for bringing up these issues as mentioned at the end. As is what always happens when a state run utility is privatised, it becomes profit first, everything else, they just bs around.
It’s a lot more then a pay issue.

The gurning faces coming from the Royal Mail bosses here is pricesless. They are so used to being able to bully and brow beat their subordinates, that when someone doesn't bow and scrape infront of them, it's a tremendous shock to their very being.
Well observed point

Royal Mail bosses all three of these want sacking , if I answered like this in my job I would be sacked
Royal Mail was sold for £1bn less than it was worth eight years ago. Money has been shared out to investors who took the shares at a cut price and have made fortunes hand over fist...whilst the postal workers have been treated like cattle.
Sounds like every other industry that's been privatised! 🤬
That vile 🤬 💩 Vince Cable was responsible for that.
Anybody could have purchased those shares though, they were floated. They were sold in secrecy to specific elites, any man and his dog could have bought those cheap shares.
And us taxpayers will have to bail out their pension fund….another government success!
Actually not true it was sold for too much, the shares absolutely tanked
Holy crap! This MP wiped the floor with them 😮
This is what happens when you take publicly owned services and put them into private hands.
Royal Mail started privatisation back in 2013. This scandal was going on for over a decade before privatisation.
Royal Mail and the post office are two separate companies
They need to be investigated and charged with perjury immediately. I'm sick to death of lying in politics, business and life. You only have to look at America to see where we are heading and its bloody dangerous. It should be a crime to lie if an MP or a media outlet.

If only PMQs was more like this.
You’d need speaker of the house to make the government answer a question first!

Postmen will still need to beg their line Manager who, if he remembers to, may authorise the excess time....... maybe ?

The answer is very simple and twofold. Firstly, return royal mail to a public utility. Second all postal workers get a fair and reasonable share of materials and are paid to deliver it regardless of time. This means mail is delivered quickly if they want a shorter day! Mail is an essential service and must be owned by the public as obviously demonstrated by these greedy jokers you’ve allowed to be in charge of something as paramount as the postal service.
What percentage of your post is junk? There will come a time when virtually nothing is posted and the Royal Mail will cease to exist.
