I think copying over the full sample to each pad then using the MARK to truncate the samples to each pad is a lot of space. Talking more specifically for a sp303! I like to save some space by sampling to a pad, mark the sample where I want, then resample that small piece onto the pad I want. I think it saves room for those who may need the extra space on the 303
100% agree man, I do the resample thing on the 303 like you said. This copy then mark thing is a luxury for the 404a coz it has a pad copy function, does it fast n has an abundance of sample time on a large sd card. The simplicity of reverse playback for chopping, defining start & end points of a chop by hitting a pad at the right moment, time-stretching on the fly, instead of baking it into the sample destructively. Also, I didn't expect that fast-evolving piano to be so suitable for chopping (I typically end up with way to short samples, cause I have to chop away so much to exclude follow-up notes. Gives me a lot motivitation to refine the craftsmanship! Thanks!

Slept on video. Up n coming sampling producers need to learn this theory. Music theory is evolving. Hiphop revolutionized music like blues did (becoming rock n roll), like jazz did (becoming funk) and like reggae did (becoming dub). This kind of breakdown will help sampling (born from hiphop turntablism) get its respect. Excellent work, mn.

I was a jazz musician before I was a beat maker and that very much influences my mindset when chopping a sample and seeing how I can solve the puzzle. The sampler is very much an instrument, it annoys me when musicians feel otherwise when I can listen to their compositions using the sample chord progressions that the likes of The Beatles or Duke Ellington used decades earlier. It’s evolution, like you said.

@@Nonjuror full bar maybe? sometimes i'll make a two to four bar loop with just two or three chops (sometimes looping certain chops). chopping on a down beat for a measure and switching on the back beat of the next measure (sorry if i'm explaining this poorly). honestly just looping samples as well. I do a lot of those sorts of thing on the 404 and I'm curious how you'd go about it. gotta love the basics of digging for gems and looping shit up. just some ideas, i dig your workflow! keep up the good work, man

5:05 Can someone explain to me how it's calculating the bpm of each chop? And why you need to make all of the bpms match, considering that they're clearly inaccurate?
And after that, why do they then need to be stretched to the same tempo? The audio being played clearly won't be all in one uniform tempo anyway, so what's the function?
Yeah, it’s not the most intelligent system, it measures from the Start to End Marks of the chop and assumes it’s either 1 beat, 2 beats, 1 bar or 2 bars. Because what I was sampling was a live recording that slows down and speeds up in the small section I used, I wanted them all to be the same length so I could play each chop on the beat and fit perfectly together without gaps between samples. Hope that helps explain what I was thinking! Cheers!

I have a bizarre idea for trying to Copy on OG - start with empty Flash card and no samples at root folder. Sample your break then export that sample you want to copy. Now move to another bank and import sample function at that empty bank. It *should* import that sample (as it's the only one) and stop. Now do pad assignment exchange and put that imported sample (copy) to wherever you want. repeat and rinse. I hope to test this tomorrow.
Yep yep, for sure - that's definitely the ideal scenario for a more solid mix. With this flip, I wanted to boost the lows to add weight to the upright bass but in hte sample it's also panned hard right and having all the boosted lows panned hard to one side is something I wanted to avoid. Listening back to it now what I would do different is resample it two times: - One in stereo + isolator with the lows all the way down. - Then another in mono + isolator with just lows (mid/high all down). After that I would resample the two back together in stereo....so now the the piano is on the left, the upper freqs of the upright bass are on the right and the lows of the bass are in the center. Or maybe something similar with C Canceller...
The tap to mark/trim technique is brilliant.
Esp with Reverse for the End mark. Definitely handy when you're trying to grab something small in a tight space like a hi hat in a break.
