  • There is not really an adequate means to describe the feeling of picking up this rifle today. Pardon the poor iPhone photos and screen grabs from my instagram, as I had little time to take good shots or to upload the few I did grab today. I assure you, there will be more to come.
Thirty miles out of town, into the mountains we arrived to a snowed in cabin with wood smoke issuing from the chimney and the scent of a warm hearth is a welcome sight in Montana during the late days of December. Our friend the gunmaker, greeted us with his signature, "Hey buddy". The way he says, "buddy" usually rolls off slow as if hinted with some kind hospitality, as if he was indeed your old friend. He offers hot coffee, he packs his pipe, and the talk of guns and history begins.
How often have you hear the phrase, "The gun that won the West!" or perhaps, "The gun that won WWII" in reference to either perhaps the Winchester lever actions (in the West) or the Garand for WWII? There are even other catch phrases for, the "great equalizer" or, "God made men, Samuel Colt made them equal".
Ever since I learned of the Gun maker Jacob Dickert, I became enamored with his rifles and the role they played in American history. There should easily be a phrase, "Dickert Rifles, the guns that changed the course of human events". Is that far fetched? No I think not.
Perhaps the humble German immigrant, devout Moravian, was so very humble and quiet that he shied away from any historical attention or association with great accomplishments where his works were pivotal in their role. The hardworking, Lancaster gunsmith, unbeknownst to him would leave an everlasting impression on this continent and thus the world.
Jacob Dickert Rifles were ordered several times, before and during the course of the American Revolution. He produced rifles from the time of the French and Indian War, the Revolution, the early years of the new nation, and the War of 1812.
Dickert Rifles are credited as the rifles carried by the men who turned the tide in the Revolution at the battle of Kings Mtn, where British Major Ferguson was killed and his troops defeated. A Dickert rifle is the only surviving rifle known to have been at the Alamo, and Dickert rifles are recorded to have been given to early makers of Fur Trade era rifles to, "copy" or make in a more affordable fashion.
The Dickert rifle repelled the French, freed a people from British tyranny, defended a young nation from foreign insult, expanded westward with free trappers, and fought Santa Ana in Texas. There is no tool of liberty, no fashioned steel, carved marble, written scroll that embodies the tenacity and vigor or American Liberty and our willingness to kill for freedom like the Dickert Rifle.
This is why I chose to have myself a Dickert. The greatest rifle ever to grace God's green earth.
    My Dickert:

Funny you mention the Battle of Kings Mountain. My direct ancestor was a Colonel in the militia along with his two sons that fought in that battle.

Dickerson and Beck styles are my favorites but my first love is the Edward Marshall rifle. Beautiful work of art. The only thing better than owning that rifle would be to be able to make one.

Very nice rifle, being I'm a Dickert (not a very common name) I'd like to hear more history, and perhaps find me one some day.

Trace your roots. Perhaps you are related to the Moravian Pennsylvanian who built these!

May you make your Tim Murphy shot with that rifle. Everything from the inletting and carving to the engraving and finishing is just perfect. Loading and firing a fine, balanced flintlock is the pinnacle of shooting. Hard to go back to cartridges without yawning...

I was always fascinated with the mountain men and frontiersmen (I blame Davy Crockett and Robert Conrad's portrayal of Pasquinel for this) and I always strove from an early age to accumulate their knowledge, emulate their clothing and weapons, and live as closely as I can to how they did. It took me some doing but I'm the proud owner of a .50 cal Hawken and it's my favorite gun I have so far. Wouldn't trade it for nothing and to load it, shoot it off, and smell that burnt gunpowder is intoxicating.

I'm in the process of making a late Lancaster with swamped barrel and flint lock. Parts came from Pecatonica, except for thimbles, entry pipe, and nose cap. The biggest hurdle so far has been trying to overcome the problems associated with the front lock plate machine screw.
