In 1971, Karenga was sentenced to one to ten years in prison on counts of felony assault and false imprisonment.[22] One of the victims gave testimony of how Karenga and other men tortured her and another woman. The woman described having been stripped naked and beaten with an electrical cord. Karenga's estranged wife, Brenda Lorraine Karenga, testified that she sat on the other woman's stomach while another man forced water into her mouth through a hose.

But the celebration itself is good isn’t it? Black people didn’t decide to accept Christianity on a nice beautiful sunny day. They accepted it at the end of a whip. Then there was the Christian crusade. It was nothing nice. People were tortured into accepting that religion. Christianity was and is built on war, incest, mayhem, rape, conquering of nations and so much more ugliness on a much larger scale than Karenga. We are not celebrating him. We are celebrating ourselves and others like us. What are your thoughts?

It's also the name of two provinces of Angola, North Kwanza and South Kwanza.

@@Evilroco I know this is an old comment, but I just wanted to give some insight in case you haven't gained any since.
-Every holiday is made up/invented (its common sense)
      - Kwanzaa is almost 60 yrs. old as a holiday
-The person who ACTUALLY "penned" the idea was Sister Makinya Sibeko-Kouate, and it was SHE that travelled throughout the US to establish the celebration communally. Just like a lot of things women's contributions aren't celebrated.
-Maulana Kurenga is not celebrated even in the slightest by anyone that celebrates Kwanzaa, and most of us are very educated on his gruesome crimes against the women of our community.
-If you took the time to read/watch Kwanzaa content you would know it is not inhumane (really dramatic of you to say this, because what are you even talking about) nor is it divisive (or do you believe that everyone should be allowed in black spaces at all times??).
-Kwanzaa as a holiday was started to honor and celebrate our HERITAGE as black African people who are descendants of a wide range of tribes/nations under a single umbrella.
"It's the least humane and most divisive holiday that occurs in winter"...... Have you heard of Christians and Christmas

@jasminepearls1047 Swahili and the colors Red, Black & Green were chosen because they represent Pan-Africanism.

@@jasminepearls1047 That's true, a West or Central African language would have been better. I think Swahili was chosen as it's spoken in multiple African countries but that there's no connection to African Americans.

This is our first time celebrating. A new tradition, indeed. I bought a FB friend's Kwanzaa journal. I'm going to get it for other family members.
Thank you for this video. Umoja!

Sounds great, but question...why is it more swahili and kenyan focused when the slaves came from Nigeria, Benin, Ghana area? I understand it's "pan" african, but I makes more sense to ME atleast to focus on like the yoruba, fon, dahomey, peoples. Just food for thought

This will be the 1st time celebrating Kwanzaa for my wife, kids and I. Last year was a mere acknowledgment of the principles. This year, I'm putting up decorations, getting candles and kinara, and, with proper planning, I expect to have videos up on my channel. ❤❤❤🖤💚💚💚
