In 1971, Karenga was sentenced to one to ten years in prison on counts of felony assault and false imprisonment.[22] One of the victims gave testimony of how Karenga and other men tortured her and another woman. The woman described having been stripped naked and beaten with an electrical cord. Karenga's estranged wife, Brenda Lorraine Karenga, testified that she sat on the other woman's stomach while another man forced water into her mouth through a hose.
In the words of Public Enemy, " Don't Believe the Hype."
Does that negate the fact that the principles are valuable and needed in our community?
This is helping the black community.. He was wrong & should of done his whole prison sentence. I'm about black unity & positivity..not his criminal past
@@dctalk1117its literally a made up celebration lmfao
But the celebration itself is good isn’t it? Black people didn’t decide to accept Christianity on a nice beautiful sunny day. They accepted it at the end of a whip. Then there was the Christian crusade. It was nothing nice. People were tortured into accepting that religion. Christianity was and is built on war, incest, mayhem, rape, conquering of nations and so much more ugliness on a much larger scale than Karenga. We are not celebrating him. We are celebrating ourselves and others like us. What are your thoughts?
It was created by a criminal who imprisoned and harmed women it has no connection to Africa
Except he black lol
@lettersandwordsandstuffs so what he made shit up just like people from scientology or james town were white or Japanese such as Shoko Asahara race doesn't matter what does is that they are fooling people
@@josejuaquin that would mean a relationship to Africa there genius
@lettersandwordsandstuffs then does that make Elon musk black no cause the guy took some parts from of different African cultures to make his own in the late 60s
1966 came before 1971.
A holiday made up by a felon.

Omg
@@stevezane7920 Kwanzaa is fraud.
This Karenga is the one who created this antichrist religion she talks about in this video?
It’s part of da culchaaaaaa ✊🏿😂
Kwanzaa is a made up holiday founded by a man who tortured women. Kwanzaa is not celebrated in Africa.
the way all holidays r made up😭😭😭😭
@@jaidennn4138 No.
@@calvin659 wow ur very smart mr racist
@jaidennn4138 the difference is that the guy who made up Kwanzaa had a driver's license.
@@whereswaldo333 I’m sorry are you saying African people can’t drive?
wasn’t the founder of this holiday convicted of beating and torturing women?
The Founding Fathers did heinous crimes and here we are in the United States of America. There was and still is value despite the horrors.
@@rwilson4991 that’s fine as long as you know what kind of man created your version of Christmas. I personally chose not to celebrate holidays made up by horrible people. It’s like celebrating a holiday made up by Hitler👍
Ohhh , look into guy who invented it , dr . Karenga . Holy shit
🤔Where is the founder of Kwanza today?
Most likely burning in hell.
In hell 🔥
Was just reading about Dr Karenga and what a fine upstanding citizen he is/was. In 1971, he was convicted of felony assault, torture, and false imprisonment of women. He denied involvement and claimed the prosecution was political in nature. Karenga was imprisoned in California Men's Colony until he received parole in 1975. Now he's full time race hustler. Best regards from the UK.
I plan to make fun of kwanzaa from now on.
the racism is craaaazy
Nobody celebrates Kwanzaa. This has 2k dislikes.😂
Can you talk about the founder of Kwanzaa? He tied up a woman and beat her with an electrical cord and let other men torture her. He got 10 years in prison for it. That’s why I don’t celebrate Kwanzaa.
So we should not celebrate Christmas because Christians supported the slave trade in this country?
@@msmith7795 he was also an FBI informant
People who celebrate this fake holiday don't mention the founder was an evil POS because they just want a "positive" holiday
And so they shouldn't celebrate this holiday becausse? Yes, the founder is a POS but guess what, people can take what he came up with and do different things with it. It's a hard concept to grasp I'm sure. Also, there's no such thing as a "fake" holiday buddy, just holidays most don't celebrate. A holiday can be personal, interpersonal, cultural, religious, national, whatever. None of these are fake. If Kwanzaa is "fake", then so is some Joe Nobody's anniversary. @@googleuser7454
Can we talk about during this time period . J Edgar Hoover and the FBI tried on several occasions to prosecute several Civil right leaders. We are not impressed by your little tidbit of news . We have already heard this "story"
Invented in the 60’s lol
Yes, 1966. I am better because of the creation. Something created in 2024 has no value?
@@rwilson4991 the recency of the "holiday" evaporates the whole idea of the holiday having deep historical significance to any families, like Christmas (which has roots thousands of years old, going back to winter solstice).
It was created in the civil rights (read: black power) era with a political agenda, designed to divide rather than unite.
Wow
Did Ron enjoy his time in prison?
OH LAWWWWD I JUST STOLE DA THANGS FROM DA GUCCI STO FA KWANZAA ✊🏿🏀
The monster who invented Kwanzaa kidnapped and tortured 2 women who were loyal to him.
Who is telling all of this media outlet to push this Holiday. We not trying to connect with Africa nor do we celebrate this.
I can explain Kwanza in two words "knockoff hanuka"
Its a holiday with plenty of seasoning !!!!
When you insert yourself in other ppl business.. Karen please mind your own business
Ah there's the unity Kwanzaa is all about!
The Hanuka people have all the record contracts for the Kwanza people
Utter nonsense...ain't no black folk celebrate Kwanzaa..
Why is it every time African American people try to connect with their roots it’s up for such debate? Was the founder of this holiday shit yes. Along with many other founders of holidays. However the principles and the celebration of the black community are beyond important. ❤
This comment!!!! Yes!!!
You want to separate yourselves that bad, go to Africa. Even they dont claim you.

I’ve been Celebrating Kwanzaa since 1998 and I want to pass the History Down to my Family. ❤
We've celebrated Kwanzaa for over 25 yrs here in the UK. There are also public Kwanzaa events in the main cities
I'm African, from Angola 🇦🇴
The name Kwanza comes from Angola, from the Kimbundo language.
Kwanza means "first" our "beginning".
It is the name of the largest river in Angola, and also the name of our currency.
It's also the name of two provinces of Angola, North Kwanza and South Kwanza.
Ooga booga
👩🏿🦲
I been celebrating it with my family for ove 500 years. It is very special victim day where we feel oppressed for no reason at all.
You are a fool
Never heard of Kwanzaa until I came to America
Fake holiday. Christmas or Hanukkah. Pick.
I like how kwanza was a holiday invented by a white dude
I am so glad my soul didn't come into an African body.
Why would a holiday using Swahili language apply to all black people, most of whom have no relation at all to Swahili people?
Even though u explained the best way possible, it still sounds racist and really stupid holiday I know no Kenyan will take up this holiday, so forget my country me.
Didnt the guy that invented Kwanzaa foe black unity tie 2 black women up and hold them prisoners?
Yup
A few years back the general public tried to embrace it and become inclusive but were met with anger because not a "Xmas" holiday. People gave up on trying to care. We aren't going to be shamed for collective refusal to go backward. We tried and now it is what it is..celebrate and enjoy your holiday, we don't need to further attempt joining in 🤷
Lost track with it but I’m back there’s a knew light of prospective on it for me I really feel new energy around it
My family and have celebrated Kwanzaa every year since 1992 and have strengthened the bonds of unity, love, and support of each individual in our family unit.❤❤❤
😂 are you aware of the crimes committed by the founder of this “holiday” ?
I am aware and still choose to celebrate the essence. The Jesus story has at least two versions in my bible. Am I suppose to dismiss it? No, I get the beautiful Principles.@@betfig3804
Just celebrate Christmas.
Faux "holiday" like festivus
“We’re all we got” is her admitting how she views white Americans
Wow! What a made up holiday.
Wow! What a racist commenter
when i was young, me and my family celebrated kwanzaa every year. i think i wanna get back to that tradition 1 year.
You should do it right away: it’s literally almost completely dead. Only 1% of African Americans celebrate it today.
Hahaha it’s fucking lame

This is funny to me
Hahaha 😆 😂 😆
Wanza is also meant for gender affirmation
Kwanzaa is not real
It’s my second time.
Umoja! This is a great video, thank you for producing it. How do you think Kwanzaa can be modernized to help propel afro-futurism? I feel like black ingenuity & craftsmanship should be a part of Kwanzaa, as well. Harambee-7x!
I always say happy holidays. You never know what people are celebrating this time of year.
Christmas, everyone actually celebrates Christmas.

"Connected to my root" bro literally a holiday nobody in Africa celebrates. It was made by a man 60 years ago. This isn't some African tradition passed down.

Heritage!!! it's an invented holiday that/s barely existed 50 years
The convicted kidnapper/torturer who first penned the idea did so to create more division !!!
It's the least humane and most divisive holiday that occurs in winter !
@@Evilroco I know this is an old comment, but I just wanted to give some insight in case you haven't gained any since.
-Every holiday is made up/invented (its common sense)
- Kwanzaa is almost 60 yrs. old as a holiday
-The person who ACTUALLY "penned" the idea was Sister Makinya Sibeko-Kouate, and it was SHE that travelled throughout the US to establish the celebration communally. Just like a lot of things women's contributions aren't celebrated.
-Maulana Kurenga is not celebrated even in the slightest by anyone that celebrates Kwanzaa, and most of us are very educated on his gruesome crimes against the women of our community.
-If you took the time to read/watch Kwanzaa content you would know it is not inhumane (really dramatic of you to say this, because what are you even talking about) nor is it divisive (or do you believe that everyone should be allowed in black spaces at all times??).
-Kwanzaa as a holiday was started to honor and celebrate our HERITAGE as black African people who are descendants of a wide range of tribes/nations under a single umbrella.
"It's the least humane and most divisive holiday that occurs in winter"...... Have you heard of Christians and Christmas
Also, as a non-black person what gave the audacity to insert your opinion in something that doesn't concern you. I don't usually take the time out for things like this but I hope you learned something new today,
@@ahmarianrigby6063 and in the last paragraph you blew it ,resorting to base racism.
As a part of society I have every right to comment on what occurs in it , just as you are free to make your comments about Christians.
Lmao a hair hatted household
We don't have education about the meaning of Christmas either but do we need it?. We already know what to do - make the decorations, make and ice the cake, put silver coins in the pudding, try not to break your teeth or swallow them, put up the Christmas tree with a star on the top, go carol singing, wrap presents, put a pie and milk out for Santa, be good and play games.
Kwanza 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I heard Happy Kwanzaa by Teddy Pendergrass today.
🙉😂😂😂
Thank you for your explanation of Kwanza. My husband is African American and when we first got married, I asked him about this when we had attended a Kwanza party. He said he didn't celebrate this so I let it go. I'll talk to him more about this later. Maybe we'll jump into celebrating this next year.❤
There is so much that we do not know. You don't need him to celebrate Black culture. You can attend because you want to know.
I think the controversies surrounding the originator may have contributed to a drop in popularity. The main values are very good though.
I think it also uses a language that is not an ancestral language of black Americans. He also uses a first fruit feast from South African which we don't come from. The colors are also no aligned with actual African cutlures.
@jasminepearls1047 Swahili and the colors Red, Black & Green were chosen because they represent Pan-Africanism.
@@jasminepearls1047 That's true, a West or Central African language would have been better. I think Swahili was chosen as it's spoken in multiple African countries but that there's no connection to African Americans.
This is our first time celebrating. A new tradition, indeed. I bought a FB friend's Kwanzaa journal. I'm going to get it for other family members.
Thank you for this video. Umoja!

Sounds great, but question...why is it more swahili and kenyan focused when the slaves came from Nigeria, Benin, Ghana area? I understand it's "pan" african, but I makes more sense to ME atleast to focus on like the yoruba, fon, dahomey, peoples. Just food for thought
I definitely plan on starting this tradition when I have kids.
So, you want to teach your future kids to be racists?

Thank you for sharing
This will be the 1st time celebrating Kwanzaa for my wife, kids and I. Last year was a mere acknowledgment of the principles. This year, I'm putting up decorations, getting candles and kinara, and, with proper planning, I expect to have videos up on my channel. ❤❤❤🖤💚💚💚
I learned and loved this since my elementary days celebrating as a child. It is awesome that now more are interested. Let's get together teaching in the community and at home.
We all WE got!
And yall shoot at eachother....so make that make sense
We don't let please take over our lives we are strong we are caring we are loving we are amazing people and I think it should say that way forever.
