Just watched this masterpiece again. Fell in love with Jean Arthur the first time I saw her years ago and now I'm older I can appreciate her and the other actors on a whole new set of levels. But I'm still in love with her. Which actress ever can cry so adorably and make us feel her pain so beautifully. This really is a wonderful work of art from all departments and should be preserved forever. Thank you, you lovely people....

One has to watch an awful pile of films to stumble across the masterpieces and when you get to this BRILLIANT example of the art it leaves you yearning for more please. The gorgeous unique Jean Arthur shines the whole way through. Charles Coburn was a magnificent character actor with his comedic touch and Joel McCrea never really fails to match the level of performance. The writing is superb, the direction sublime, the photography excellent and the tongue in cheek humour is sharp as a pin. Love it. Love it. Love it. Absolutely Brilliant!!!! These days we seem to have lost the knack...

Not if you know what you are looking for
      First few minutes are critical
And so is the charm of the characters played by actors with character...
It's not big names that make the films great
I came for Charles a likeable actor ...
I have seen this before but it's worth another look....

This movie is among my favorites from the classic movie era... Jean Arthur and Joel McCrea are also among my favorites among the great actors of all time... let us not underestimate Charles Coburn... a great gem of the classic character actors...
My father told he actually met Joel McCrea, while on leave during his time with the Navy in WWII... true story.... recently passed away at age 95.
Jean Arthur was a classic and natural beauty...

This was George Stevens' final film of a three-picture deal with Columbia Pictures. The studio was just starting to become a great studio, mostly due to the work of Frank Capra. Studio chief Harry Cohn had just lost Capra to free agency and wanted desperately to find a new star director. Cohn was a notoriously ill-mannered boss who just happened to be a great producer. So, when he approached Stevens with a deal , Stevens agreed, except that Cohn had to agree not to visit the set at any time. Stevens delivered three classics to Cohn: "Penny Serenade," "The Talk of the Town and "The More the Merrier" before heading to the Army to shoot the war.

Sparkling dialog as fresh today as it was 70 years ago. So lively! So clever. As a native of upstate New York, I find it ironic that Plattsburgh, where I have often visited, is the closest I'll ever be to the beautiful Jean Arthur. Ironically she and Joel McRae were something like 40 when this movie was made.

I learned that many programs get a thumbs down by others who have their own channel, they want to move up and they try to put others down. Greed and jealousy I guess, hard to understand. But it explains why there's 53 thumbs down. This picture is a gem.

This reminds me a lot of another film called "Walk, Don't Run", which had Cary Grant in the Charles Coburn role, Samantha Eggar in the Jean Arthur role and Jim Hutton in the Joel McCrea role. Very similar premise. Love both films.

Who, in our stinkin world of today, wouldn't? She represents an era long gone. Today's "women" are more like men with their tattoos, and lets not even talk about their blue hair.

OK, just watched it for the 30th time. It's like comfort food or a warm blanket. Safe, escape, brief respite....you know. Of course when it was made it seemed like the world was ending - things were such a mess in europe and asia. funny

My uncle bore a strong resemblance to Joel Mc Crea, they were of the same era. I could so see Uncle Cliff (or my dad, for that matter) as the lovestruck young man in the street scene! Love that it reminds me they were young & full of it, too😽👏🫶. Miss them both immeasurably, love these movies that take me back to the kind of people who raised me!

Lovely figure and when they let her look natural - like in the roof-top sunning scene with her own hair - she looked fabulous. But the close-ups do reveal hidden lines around her eyes - and that Harpo Marx hairdo was too much! They kept changing the wig top. - Cartoon-ish hairstyle. I think extreme sun exposure does that - ages you. She did look so aged in her last film "Shane" - in fact, too old for the male actors. She had a sad life in the end.

What a great country: wartime, USA. We were all together in unity of custom, ethics, morality, kindness and love of country. Regardless of whatever differences there were between us, Americans loved their nation. You could walk alone in the streets of the nation's capital. Imagine. - And you folks that want to call this a "fantasy" and insist that the US was never like this, not true! Can we return to this"? PRAY, USA!
