  • Can you spot the differences between Meghan Markle & Prince Harry's engagement pictures and Prince William & Catherine Princess of Wales'? There's more than meets the eye & it's not just the Princes engagements either. Today we are kicking off Engagement Week with a special fashion edition featuring Queen Elizabeth & Prince Philip, Princesses Beatrice & Eugenie, Zara & Mike Tindall, and of course, (at the time) Lady Diana Spencer & Prince Charles (now King Charles III). What messages did they send with their engagement photos and announcements? Which couple looked most harmonious?
Join me tomorrow to analyze Harry & Meghan's engagement interview in part 2 of Engagement weekend, and in part 3's final installment we compare their interview to that of Diana & Charles, and Catherine & William. I cannot wait to hear what you have to say in the comments! Happy Holidays & Have a Happy Day!!

Diana's tights were just fine for anyone in that era. She wasn't trying to look professional and polished, I think. She was probably trying to look a little older than her actual age.

@@lornaackerman7022 White hose were fashionable too. I think maybe she picked the suit to try to look old enough to make that decision and then styled it to try to look a bit more up to date than the suit made her look if worn with the old style suntan hose.
I think people forget exactly how funky hose got in the eighties. Textures, floral prints, polkadots...we were all over the darn place when it came to legwear.

I had Meghan pegged from the moment of that engagement photoshoot. Her attitude was entirely “Look at me! I got myself a Prince!” Nothing in her body language spoke of love, or excitement at being with Harry; just excitement at the world paying attention to her.

I love looking back at Queen Elizabeth II (then Princess Philip) and Prince Philip as much as I love then Prince William and then Kate Middleton (Wills & Kate). I really have to say I don’t know all the gossip around Prince Phillip of the day but Netflix is fiction and I wouldn’t base my impression of them or their marriage strictly off of Netflix’s artistic license.

@@wcolautti The late Queen was a princess in her own right so she was Princess Elizabeth, she was never 'Princess Philip'. She would only have been 'Princess Philip' if her title came through her marriage, like Princess Michael of Kent. Or The Meg who, if they hadn't been given the Duke & Duchess titles, would be 'Princess Henry'. Which I imagine would stick in her throat like the world's biggest fish-bone!

I agree. I’m a year younger than Diana and spent pretty much the whole 80s in coloured stockings. White with white shoes in summer and every colour of the rainbow with black shoes the rest of the time. Coloured stockings were big. I had black lace ones that I wore with black pencil skirts at night, teamed with silky bright blouses with HUGE shoulder pads a la Joan Collins in Dynasty 😂😂 I loved 80s fashions 💜
What Diana wore, lots of us copied. I had a wardrobe full of white shirts with high ruffled collars because she did, and sleeveless knitted vests to go with them because she did. I’ve still got my red jumper with white sheep and one black sheep land the navy blue jumper with a koala on it like the ones she had. She was iconic.

I'm increasingly coming to the conclusion her style tends more Italian than British. There's an Italian street style channel that shows up in my suggestions sometimes and quite frankly Meghan wouldn't look out of place in Milan. Things like big coats that swallow you up, high waists that are a bit too high, shoes that are poised only slightly short of being novelties....she seems to like all that slightly exaggerated stuff.

Sarah's ring isn't pink... It's a Burmese Ruby surrounded by ten glittering diamonds.
Princess Eugenie's ring features an incredibly rare Padparadscha Sapphire that changes color between orange and pink, commonly appearing as a warm salmon hue.
Princess Beatrice's ring is a beautiful 3.5-carat round diamond, set in a Deco design, with tapered baguettes on each side of the center.

Burmese Rubies are perhaps the most well known in the world for their colour and quality. There are three different localities where rubies are found in Burma: Mong Hsu, Mogok and Namya. Rubies mined from Burma are known to have the highest Chromium content compared to anywhere else in the world.
Padparadscha is the rarest type of sapphire. Its localities are very limited and the experts believe that the "real" stones come only from Sri Lanka. For those from Sri Lanka, one pays 20 to 30% more than for those from Madagascar or other countries of origin.

I didn’t do it because I thought it was tacky. Just because one lives in that time period doesn’t mean one needs to be as tacky as the next person. Sometimes one just needs to say no and move on. Going along with the crowd isn’t always smart. As my mother used to always say “ if Sarah jumped off a cliff, would you also jump off the cliff? “ My mother occasionally was right. The only time I wore white hose was with my white nurses uniform. Then I was so glad to remove those white hose I wore colored bobby socks with my sneakers. This was before nurses wore scrubs and sneakers. In my opinion white nurses uniforms looked so professional and clean. Before I retired I worked as a nurse practitioner and wore street clothes and a lab coat. Which also looked professional and clean. I love nursing.

Yes, as others have said, Diana was just 19, and of course being so young she had not fully developed her own style. That's reflected in the engagement outfit and to some extent in her wedding dress too. She was, later in life, able to take trends and make them her own rather than being somewhat swallowed up by them. One could say that the divide between them was already visible--she was a young, young woman who hadn't had the chance to learn to know herself and what she wanted, and he at twelve years order was set in his way of life, and they were really from different generations. So sad.

Diana's mother picked the blue suit. She didn't have much say and she was so overwhelmed she said she really didn't know what to wear. She hated that suit afterwards. Her mother picked a lot of her clothes in that first year of marriage. She actually felt the same about her wedding dress. After the divorce, she said if she could go back she would choose a completely different gown, but she was young, naive, romantic and easily got talked into this massive gown to befit the grandeur of St. Paul's Cathedral.

MAJOR 80's flashback! I'm 61, just 11 months younger than Diana (I married one year later, & William is just a few months older than my first son). I never wore those bow ties at the neck, but that outfit was entirely proper for the time (definitely NOT my style, but the color was pretty on her) I'm half English, & my Mother raised me to love & respect the Monarchy.. I was totally focused on the entire Diana & Charles saga, from the very beginning to her tragic death. Then later, I followed the wedding of Catherine & William. Those pictures were pure class & style. They looked so happy, & radiated love & togetherness.
I had zero interest in Harry & Me-gain. I never saw any of it until after Queen Elizabeth passed away & I stumbled into the whole pathetic, embarrassing Sussex side show sphere on UA-cam.. Everything about that crass, circus of an engagement & wedding was revolting & over the top.
Great video Beebs. It's definitely fascinating to see the fashions & styles as they changed over the decades. Looking forward to more, luv ya Honey! 💖

First, Beebs you look really lovely! What really struck me about seeing these images all together was the HUGE difference between every couple and the last lot...you know who I mean H & M. All the previous couples in their own different ways and styles were obviously beaming with quiet love for each other. There was that soft contentment and secret understanding that you get between couples that are in love...even if the marriages did not last forever - here in this snapshot in time these couples were in love. H&M were not! They were already trying to act as the 'hope of the royals' or 'the most popular'. Then the Meg started as she meant to go on with her behaviour and manner of dressing...They were almost desperately excited, like a pair of children who are doing something they know they shouldnt. The other couples were, like Catherine and William, were so obviously in love and really together. They were sharing something special with each other as well as with the public - H&M were declaring some sort of deal.

Why does everyone think Diana was so shockingly young? I was 18 when I was married and considered a grownup. I was able to plan and decorate our first apartment, work at a job while going to college and keep my own bills and pay my own bills. I also helped my husband start his own business and I kept the books for his business. I wasn’t some young inexperienced person who didn’t understand the ways of the world. We were a young couple just starting out and making our way. I’ll bet there are many other couples out there who did the same thing. Come on, let’s see a show of hands!! I’m tired of seeing and hearing how young and naive poor Diana was. She ran with a group of equally young women who were hanging out together looking for a husband to trap into marriage. There are plenty of young mature women out there working and studying who are not looking to trap a husband. These women are making a home for themselves and planning a future with a career and job. They’re not looking to trap a man into marriage. Diana had her eye on Charles when he was dating her sister. When he stopped dating her sister, Diana moved in. In my opinion, she knew what she was doing. Yes, she was naive but she knew what she was doing and she knew what she wanted.

I was 16 when Charles and Diana got engaged and I remember thinking how frumpy her outfit was - she was only 19 herself after all! I'm sure if stylists had been more of a thing in 1981, something more fashionable could have been found. She more than made up for it in the ensuing years; best dressed royal lady ever ❤

Wow, really like this top you’re wearing. The texturizing in the front adds interest without distraction and it fits you very well. I like the sleeves, too, that stop at rye elbow and gives it a nice finished look. And the color s really pretty on you. Good job, girl!

I was in my 20s; I remember being disappointed w Dians's engagement outfit. It appeared more overly respectful of the RF than stylish.
After the engagement, she contacted, I believe, the editor of Vogue and asked for wardrobe help. She early on had help from stylists, but then took the lessons and owned her own great style.

I agree. I was a tad older than you when Diana and Charles became engaged, but I also thought much of what she wore in those early months/years was frumpy looking. But yes, the white tights were the rage back then. I think I wore some, too. LOL

Diana really came into power after the engagement. I'll always remember her holding the child on her hip when she was only going out with Charles. I think she was in one of her first jobs and she was such a beautiful young lady. I was only a little girl but I thought how motherly and ladylike she was.

I think Cathrine's dress was a way for Diana to be there for the announcement as well as to highlight the ring. I feel William and Cathrine want to give nods to Diana when milestones happen.

I think Beatrice has really bloomed since she fell in love with Edo, she was always rather gauche and awkward. I totally adore Sarah’s ring, I have a small Ruby ring and they do tend to look pink in photos, especially if a flash is used

Diana & Charles photo looked good but lacked of the romantic/love vibe for me. Sophie & Edward engagement photo just simple and no fuss. The gray fits her image as professional working woman at that time. Adore the late Queen and P. Phillips engagement photo - they looked so happy and Prince Philip looked so handsome and distinguished! Same vibe when looking at Catherine & William - though the Queen & Prince Phillip took the top spot for me. Princess Beatrice and Edoardo photo just gave such a romantic vibe - I love them as a couple! H&M did not look like an engagement photo, but rather than a simple magazine cover. Thank you for putting this video together. It brought back many enjoyable memories.

I am old enough to remember the first couple of engagements. The suit Diana wore was conservative for the time, especially for a girl as young as she was at the time, but I wouldn't say frumpy. I think we just assumed that it had to be conservative because it was the royal family. The thing that jumped out more to me were the flat navy shoes. I thought that looked more frumpy, But given that she was a tall woman and he is not a tall man, that was to avoid her towering over him. Sara and Andrews clothing was typical and ushered in the big "Fergie Hair Bows" that became very popular after this (you can't see it in that photo but she almost always wore these huge bows tying back her hair). I believe her ring was a ruby, not pink. But it definitely looked lighter in the photo.

I remember reading something back in the 80s (before everything started falling apart) that she wore flats or low heals and maneuvered to try to be as "short" as possible. You can see when their marriage started falling apart before it went public. As she became more unhappy with him, her heels got taller.

At the very least, Meghan could've knotted the tie more elegantly. It looked like she just grabbed the nearest coat as sloppily put it on like she was told she was going to have her picture taken in 30 seconds.

White tights had their moments during the 80s so Diana was following the fashion for her engagement. They were popular again at the end of the 80s with the film Heathers (and oversized blazers). The choice back then seemed to be either ashy white tights or ‘American Tan’ which was an orange/brown colour. A good neutral flesh tone was hard to find

Sophie did have a very subdued look for her engagement interview, but let's look at it in context: Sophie has never been one to wear the super bright, super over the top, avant garde, fashion forward styles. She has had some duds, but she has always stayed pretty true to her style and her comfort level. Also, Sophie was a professional before she became a royal. She not only worked for a large company, she also opened her own firm. Keep in mind, she did roughly 15 years in the professional world. She was used to dealing with and having to hold her own in a very cut throat business. She became comfortable in that "professional" style 90's dress. So much so, that it became an armor of sort. As she has grown far more comfortable with herself and her role in the BRF, she has started embracing a far more feminine style and a more fashionable style.
