    Eric,
    Congratulations!
    I watched the whole series of videos, I’ll be leaving from Austin Texas the last week of August-2022, heading to North Carolina to start my TAT adventure. Thanks for documenting your trip the good and back. I’ll be riding RED as well a 2022 CRF450RL. I plan to send a set of tires to Topar Racing before I leave Austin. Btw, I turned 66 last May, wish me luck!

      If I was in the market for a new bike I'd have to go with the CRF300L. For $5k, fuel injection, super reliable, curb weight of 300lbs. XR650l hasn't been touched since 1992, other than colors. If you're buying used the XR is often a very good deal however!

    • @DaddyEric222
      @DaddyEric222  3 роки тому

      Depends greatly on weather conditions. If Mississippi was muddy, then I've heard that can be some of the hardest. Other than the one tough road in Arkansa Warloop Road. Which is a dried riverbed, unless you want the challenge, I would 100% SKIP Warloop Road. Otherwise it was good roads for a dirt bike!

    With the issues you had with the XR650L would you pick this bike again for the trip? Namely the lack of cush drive and also needing to adjust valves for tapping/ticking. When you found out you had hardly any oil, that was scary too. I am torn between the XR650L vs the DR650.

      Federal shipping company, from Portland to Orlando. Yes Sam’s route, and it was a gate that shouldn’t have been shut. Nothing wrong with Sam’s route

    • @sanu5308
      @sanu5308 2 роки тому

      @@DaddyEric222 Thank you Eric. I got the map files from Sam. Do you just follow his route and the motels and gas stations are right on the route or we have to be careful looking at the gas level on the bike? I heard that the Utah, Idaho and Oregon sections are very remote and we have to be careful.

      No companies with the Clark 4.7 Gallon. Never needed extra gas (very close a couple times). Only thing you need to add with the Clark tank is aluminum supports connecting to the original tank connection points in the very front. Makes the tank significantly more stable.

    Thanks. I watched whole series. Bucket list for sure. Can you tell me approx cost. $5k-$7500?

    • @DaddyEric222
      @DaddyEric222  3 роки тому

      Best way to plan for cost is to add up daily costs (food, lodging, gas), multiple by number of days plus all travel(train tickets, airlines, shipping). With gear you can easily spend 10k or more. Or as low as you're comfortable with. If you want it to be cheap you can make it by mostly camping and eating cheap. Or you can eat at nice restaurants and stay in hotels/motels every night.

    Great series of videos documenting your adventure. My son and I are planning to ride the TAT in the summer of 2023. Both will be riding the XR650L with the typical modifications needed for this type of riding. Two questions. First, what model of drone did you use? Second, some details about how you made the arrangements to ship your bike home and the cost?

      I wish my dad would do this trip with me, I asked him to. You and your son will love it! DJI mavic pro, is the drone, there are better and smaller ones available now! But always DJI for drones. For shipping I used, for the second time, federalcos. But check around still, cost me $800. I dropped off the bike and took and Uber to the airport. They crated it up and shipped it by truck to Orlando.

    Whoo hoo! Well done! I liked that you presented crossing I-5. Nobody else has done that (that I've seen) but it serves as a significant "milestone" to say, I'm leaving the interior and approaching the coast. What camera did you use for your night lapses? They were a nice way to mark a day. I liked your cuts to keep the riding sequences engaging. It looks like Sam is building an entire loop around the interior of the USA. Maybe by summer of 2022 you can ride that? All the best!

    • @DaddyEric222
      @DaddyEric222  3 роки тому +1

      I debated that a bit, I did not carry. I had a 5000 lumen flashlight that can quickly go to turbo brightness. This gave me some confidence at night, as that kind of brightness at night would stun anything with eyes, and at least give me a second to evaluate the situation. However, I saw no bears, and very few people on the trials. Never felt threatened, or in danger. Plenty of small animals around that tent at night however lol

      Sam's maps! Id recommend getting the paper versions as well. Really helps to plan the next day. I wished I would have had them several times.

      Cool, thanks. I have both the GPX files and the paper. I noticed on your phone you had the maps on motion x app. How’d that work out? I use that app as well.

      @@scudrunneradv3269IT worked well enough for me! Its not perfect but I was never much more than a mile or 2 turned around before I found my way back. You basically align your location with the trail map. Not exactly turn my turn directions but close enough

      Ya I looked at Sams tracks on my Rever account. Iit looks like you have to do some figuring but not difficult

    We'll done! Night shots pretty incredible does it really look like that through your eyes or does the camera pick up more light?

      Camera picks up a bit more light than I would see. But if you let your eyes completely adjust it is quite close to that brightness

    I wished you would have included some gas stops....what type of GPS did you use?

      Motion X GPS, I never really had fuel issues. I was caring an extra 1/2 gallon in 2, 1 liter containers (20 miles range). I never had to use them. (But glad I had them for piece of mind)

    Did you navigate via the GPS tracks from the tat official site or another source...or via roll chart/map? And how did you get the bike and gear home?

    • @DaddyEric222
      @DaddyEric222  3 роки тому

      Ya I bought Sams TAT GPS files and used Motion X GPS on my phone to navigate. Shipped the bike home via freight.

    If you were to do it again would you still choose the xr650 or something more or less off road worthy? Say like a 250 vs an Africa twin.

    • @DaddyEric222
      @DaddyEric222  3 роки тому +1

      Hmmm, If I was buying a bike today, it would probably be that new CRF300L. Good price, proven reliability, fuel injection. I'm not someone who can spend $10k+ on a dual sport bike. If I had that kind of money the KTM 790 would be my bike. They all will work for the TAT, but depends how fast you want to go. Often times slower is the better way to experience an adventure like is!
