  • In this polybutylene pipe repair video we show you how to change polybutylene shut off valves from polybutylene pipes (with the grey pipe fittings). We'll teach you how to convert polybutylene plumbing shut off valves to standard compression copper water shut off valves. In this polybutylene to copper conversion repair, we take the grey pipe plumbing fittings, and convert them from polybutylene plumbing to copper using the SharkBite polybutylene adapter to connect to this PB Pipe and make your grey pipe problems go away. Polybutylene plumbing is sometimes referred to as PBPipe or PB pipe, and is a flexible gray pipe plumbing system used by builders in the 1970s and 1980s, and was outlawed in 1994 after numerous class action lawsuits proved this system of grey pipe plumbing suffered costly leaks. You are not allowed to use polybutylene pipes in new construction plumbing applications.
    Change shutoff valve under the sink
    To change shutoff valve from Polybutylene to copper compression fitting, we cut off the old valve by slicing through the grey pipe. Next, we change sink shut off valve by creating our own water shut off valve assembly on the countertop where it is easy to build it.
    Change shut off valve
    We start with the Shark Bite polybutylene adapter which is one of a few SharkBite polybutylene fittings they have, then insert a 2" length of copper pipe into the copper end, leaving the gray polypropylene end open for now. Then you wrench on your new compression fitting water shutoff valve onto the copper pipe. In this case we are using a 90-degree quarter turn angle stop compression fitting for our water shut off valve under the kitchen sink. We hope you enjoyed our plumbing tips.

    Unfortunately my place has this grey pipe. I tried these Shark bites but i'm not convinced they are safe to use. I feel like it is very hard to slip all the way on the grey poly. They did not leak, but I know they are not as far inn as the Pex pushes inn. Unfortunately I did not mark them. I decided to look around and I found shark bite adapters that crimp too the Poly transferring it to Pex. I feel way better with this set up. Sometimes may have to heat the poly a bit to get it to slip on the adapter though as can be very snug to push on. These adapters are called Poly to Pex adapter. I am not a plumber, I just bought the tools and watched videos so I could learn to do it myself.

    There is an insert inside all shark bite couplings that is there for use with pex tubing to help support or strengthen the pex but if using copper or CPVC you should remove that insert from inside the shark bite fitting by pulling it out with some needle nose pliers. It’s not needed with the stiffer pipe and will actually reduce the water flow. Probably reducing it down from half inch to three eights approximately.

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  5 років тому

      The flow actually gets reduced down to 3 eights on the output of the angle stop anyway. Below I pasted from shark bite's online instructions that state "The PEX stiffener does not need to be removed for Copper or CPVC applications." But yes you are right it will reduce the flow down which is fine if you're connected to an angle stop anyways with its 3/8" output.

    Builders look for the CHEAPEST ways when it comes to plumbers, or any other sub-contracter for that matter concerning low end housing...aka Trac houses. Only when you get into high end housing you'll see quality workmanship, products, etc. although you will see some shoddy work there too, when you have competition to win a contract. It's all about that dollar. You ever heard the phrase "You get what you pay for". Too bad the end user has to deal with this stuff.

    Hi Jeff, don't know if you'll see this. Just wondering if I can use a sharkbite polyb to pex adapter and then connect to a toilet shut off valve? I'm trying a very basic DIY bathroom reno, but once I removed the toilet and shut the toilet shut off valve off, it's still leaking. Was hoping to use the materials that I have. Since it's not drinking water, would a pex connection work as a low budget solution? Or are toilet shut off valves only meant to connect to copper? Many thanks, I'm learning as I go.

      It makes little sense (IMHO) to change out little bits of the polybutylene if it is the polybutylene that is the problem - breaking down over time, etc.
      Basically, if the polybutylene has begun leaking here, it has reached the end of its useful life and needs to be removed and replaced entirely. There are literally dozens of such connections in a home and many behind/within walls, attics, etc. So, maybe next week you'll be calling to replace the cold water valve in your bathroom, a month later, one in your tub or the feed to the commode. Have you priced these polybutylene Shark Bite parts? they add ten dollars to every repair while leaving 'the culprit' hidden in a wall.
      His comment that, leaving this mussy repair visible is so that you'll 'notice any leak instantly' is ridiculous. How often do you examine the stop valves in/under your vanity? Under your kitchen sink? Leaks tend to start small and do the damage slowly over time. Often, the first time you notice a problem is when a puddle has accumulated or the vanity cabinet floor has swollen.

      I am dealing with this PB issue, but next to my washer. and being a single mom, now homeschooling my daughter and trying to work, I can understand and FULLY appreciate this mans logic. it's for those who cannot afford to RIP apart their entire home, and repipe an entire house. beyond that, maybe YOU dont check up on pipe repairs outside the wall, but I do. at least 20 times a day. just to make sure. for a commenter who seems to be critisizing this man for not being cautious enough, it seems contradicting that you wouldnt keep an eye on a pipe that has been repaired. no matter what the process. you keep an eye on it. to make sure it took and isnt leaking. seems like common sense imo. but hey, I can appreciate and acknowledge we do not all think and operate the same. rather than hate on something that isnt useful for you, but is for others, just move on. keep scrolling.

      In this case I believe the shark bite is more reliable than the Polybutylene pipe and as long as you have this on the outside of the wall where you can see it and check on it periodically you will be OK. Your other option is to do what most plumbers do which is to re pipe the house at a cost of about $10,000 right now that's real big going on up any Orlando in Kissimmee FL area as many houses up there were built with CPVC pipe which is just as bad it starts cracking and shattering on you after not even 15 years we just dealt with that at a friend's house a few months ago.

The DIY hacks you are showing are doable but are not professional. Master Plumbers do not use shark bites we either solder crimp pro press or use uponor expansion tools. Any engineer should know you shouldn't compress hard copper unless you get it red hot and cool it first. This is a new video so I'm not sure what it is you're asking about why didn't I make a new video. You don't just replace this with another part because you can't buy the parts anymore and nobody has the Tools to fix these unlimited Poly butylene fittings because it hasn't been allowed since 1994 so most people are not equipped to deal with it. Most plumbers when they come across stuff like this will highly suggest to the homeowner to simply re pipe the whole house at a cost of probably $10,000 . So for most people the best course of action is to use the sharkbite coupling here which converts it from Poly butylene to copper

      @@jeffostroff Hi Jeff was talking about you put the fitting in backwards then commented over old video. Perhaps it demonstrated how flexible shark bite is you can fix a mistake easily. (of course you need a tool for that too heh) I have a similar case. Have a valve that works but is PB on both sides and was leaking after valve to facet. I replaced that piece with PEX but had to jam it on the valve cause PB appears to have a larger inside diameter than PEX! Guess that means the wall of PEX is thicker cause both have same OD. (For sure temp fix and shut valve when not there) From what I have read the PB pipe is ok its the fittings that were the problem. However its complicated cause they don't make parts anymore. So shark bite is a good option or a crimp adapter is a little cheaper.

    Hi Jeff - Thanks for trying.. but a couple things.... 1) you blocked the view when cutting under the sink..and didnt even bother telling us how you cut it... 2) you made such a big deal over deburring and cleaning and marking with a red mark on the copper pipe and did nothing at all on the polyb pipe under the sink... How did you know you got it deep enough into the sharkbite ??

    There has to be a easier way. Having to buy all those tools to fix a toilet just seems like a waste But I suppose it is going to be cheaper than calling a plumber.

    Don’t use sharkbite fittings

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  4 роки тому +1

      Shark bite fittings are fine to use if they are out in the open where you can see them. And when you connect up to the old banned polybutylene piping, there is no other choice. The only other solution you would have us to rip out all of the polybutylene piping in a house which often runs $20000.

    Not how a plumber would do it

      That's exactly how a plumber does it. You don't know the proper way to do this.

      @@jeffostroff rip it out and sleep better at night. That crap leaks. Joints and the pipe itself. Go get some pex and have a great night!!

      Plumber here- the od of the pb is the same as the OD of the copper. The shark bite will work either way.
      The professional way to make that repair is to use the poly to pex coupling and crimp it with the crush rings.
      The pb side will have multiple raised rings and the pex side will have three. It’s the ID that is different between the pipes.
