- In this video I tell you how I converted my 2wd Jeep Cherokee XJ to a 4x4. In order to convert a 2wd to 4wd it is actually pretty easy. In this video I also go over what all components you need as well as some tips to make the job even easier. Overall I would say it only took me a full days worth of work to convert my xj to 4x4 but i did it over the course of about a week in my spare time. Nice overview! It's pretty encouraging hearing the broad strokes of what's involved. There aren't a lot vids on Cherokee 4x4 conversions. I guess the XJs are getting rare enough for it to be worth converting.... I have a 2wd 01 WJ I'm hoping to do a similar swap, probably to Select-Trac. I know it's probably not worth while on a WJ, but the truck was left to me by my brother passed so it's got a lot of sentimental value.

I've heard you can use the 2wd transmission, you've got to cut 7 inches off of the output shaft, and use the 4x4 adapter

@@timothycadena8301 I've not done it myself, but the research I did is the spline count for some reason is different from the 4x4 shaft to the 2wd shaft. So no it wouldn't work, without taking the 4x4 shaft and putting it in the 2wd transmission
You pull the shaft and replace it. There’s a really good video with all the info somewhere that has links to all the parts you will need.

Hey bro love this video an will be looking at it in the future. Question tho. I have a 97 4door 2nd Cherokee. An plan on using a 97 4door 4Wd will I run into any issues

Question: do you have part time dash light when you engage 4x4? Did you have to do anything special to get that going?

I used the harness from the donor trans which had the wiring for the part time indicator on the transfer case. As for the dash light itself, my cluster already had the part time in it that illuminates now when I use 4x4. You can use a flashlight real close to your cluster to see if there is a spot for part time in yours.
I have a 2WD 96 XJ I bought a 88 front axle dana 30 and a 231 transfer and transmission with the driveshafts will that work?

Any 2wd that’s has a small problem to fix you can get for dirt cheap
You said minimal mechanical experience. But what about the transmission swap ?
It’s just remove one and replace it with the other. The hardest part for me normally are the lines that connect in the side. They can be a pain to remove but it’s a simple design.
92 comanche 4x4 can donate to a 4x2 2001 cherokee?
The transmission is not interchangeable between those years. You would need a 98 or newer trans.
What if I have a manual transmission?

I have a 97 Jeep XJ 2WD, what year transmissions are compatible please? I don’t understand that part you mentioned. Trying to make it 4x4.
For the 97 it is the same as 1990.5-1996 except the electrical connector for the wiring harness changed. So if you get a pre 97 trans just keep the connector from the donor and splice it onto your harness.

"4 x 4" when she puts it into 4 hi or 4 low only one wheel up front and one wheel in back spins . what is a low budget way of converting the front and rear axle to sure grip ? what jeeps at the salvage yards to I need to look for or just get a sure grip unit out of a axle housing ?
I honestly think your best option would be a locker. There are some less expensive options. I personally have a cheap lunchbox locker in the front of both my xj and my tj. I did a video on the full install. Installing A Spartan Lunchbox Locker Into My Jeep Cherokee XJ

Does 2 door vs 4 door make a difference when getting a donor jeep?
The drivetrain in the 4 door and 2 door are exactly the same.

I have both 2 and 4 door and can confirm that both are identical underneath I have swapped drive shafts between the 2 just comes down to what you prefer, my 2 door does seem to be more stable feeling but that can be also due to it being a year newer

Should i go true trac or 4x4?
Does having a automatic or manual matter. I have 96 two door 4.0 5 spd 2wd.
You would still need a trans set up for a 4wd. I’m not sure about interchangeability between years.
Can I swap a 2001 with a 99?
Should be able to.
Is it possible to convert a 2018 tahoe ?
I would assume so but I would not expect it to be an easy or cheap conversion.

I guess that would depend on your experience level but everything is basically plug and play.
