Making a Glide Bait, Part 2 Testing and Painting

- I love making lures especially when the lure design has something new. Making this glide bait with the continuous hinge has been a challenge but, it was worth it, I hope you all agree. Watch the video to the end because I test the breaking load that the hinge can take and I was surprised at what it took to break it.
As a swim builder I have to say this is one of my favorite series so far, you’re mix of technical expertise and your artistic skills make for such a unique and interesting mix....I know first hand the work required to produce these vids...outstanding!
Thank you so much it's nice to be appreciated. You're right between actually making the lure and editing hours of video footage it can really be quite a chore. But if I wasn't videotaping it I would still be doing everything you see me do on video it's just what I love to do
Engineered Angler ha ha... me too..it’s so much fun...especially when you or someone who fishes with your creations say, man we wore them out on that thing....I’d say that will be the case with your swim bait!

The first bait I make is going to be a dummy with no paint or coats on it, just full hardware so I can weight test it from the line tie to one of the hooks to find the greatest point of weakness. I enjoy watching your videos and seeing a methodical approach in contrast to other YT baitmakers that don’t do a whole lot of information during the build.

That came out great and that strap hinge took some force for sure. I've used fiberglass window screen for a hinge on a few baits but never really tested it... but after watching this video I'm curious to how it would hold up I may have to revisit the idea.

Well, that's once again a very interesting approach, especially the use of the strap as a hinge. The hinge is always a little problematic feature in wooden lures and when using screw eyes as a hinge, the end result is usually a large gap between the lure parts or possible mechanical issues.
Those multi-piece glide baits (or swimbaits or what ever they are called...) have always been a mystery to me: The location of the lure eye (where you tie the line), weighting, body shape, none of them seems to make any sense when comparing the theories to ordinary one-piece glide baits. Maybe it's a good time to build a new batch of baits, now that I got new inspiration :D
There are really so many subtle variables to lipless baits that you just have to hold the experimentation down to one or two elements at a time or run the risk of frustrating yourself right out of the hobby. A beauty, i think the strap is too steaf and that is why it is not doing much on straith retrieve.
My intention was to have the lure retrieve straight on a steady crank. Its all in the placement of the weights. You can easily get a solid body lure to have a swim action but getting a jointed lure to retrieve straight is a bit of a trick...
@@EngineeredAngler Ok and yes you are right, some salmo hard jerk bait have swim action on the straight retrieve.
Just wondering as far as a one piece 4 inch wake bait goes , what body shape would be best from your scientific point of view? The reason why I ask is that there are a lot of really expensive lures on the market which don,t work worth a dam. Bought them all tried them all ended up making two of my own that work great, love too see what you come up with. Line drag,position of line tie & type of material all have such a great effect. For a wake bait I like a teardrop shape with a slightly exaggerated wide head the tail should be some what truncated...
Also the weight should be just behind the lip...I make a small 2 1/2 inch wake bait that really thumps on retrieve.

It finished up Rail nice! I liked the movement. What was the finished size?
The final length was 4 1/2 inches...its a good size both for salt and freshwater.
I don’t know if this will make sense to you but I’ve had much better luck making them glide with heavier in density wood I’ve used maple and It worked really really nice.

I would like to ask why you did a "mid coat" with polycrylic?
I find that using the polycrylic seals the paint and gives me a really consistent clear coat. No ripples no fish-eyes, etc.
