Iron Maiden has been my favorite band since I was a little kid. Here's my 10 favorite deep cuts from them: - The Talisman - The Legacy - Dream of Mirrors - Lord of the Flies - Sign of the Cross - Infinite Dreams - Only the Good Die Young - Stranger in a Strange Land - Die with Your Boots On - Remember Tomorrow
Great point about them playing most of their songs live, very tough to pick this group. 1. Still Life 2. Brighter Than A Thousand Suns 3. Deja Vu 4. The Nomad 5. Montsegur
Murders in the Rue Morgue was my introduction to Maiden and is one of my all time favorite songs. I used to record off the radio to cassette, like everyone, and the station played a 3-song set from a recent Maiden concert, sort of introducing the band to many of us. I got Wrathchild, Murders in the Rue Morgue, and Killers, all live. Played that cassette until it died and cannot believe those live tracks are lost to me forever.
Man, have you been reading my list? :) I was and I still am also going to put 1) Still Life, 2)The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and 3) Hooks in You on my list. Alongside them I put 4) Fates Warning and 5) The Assassin.
Reach Out.....B side to Wasted Years. This was sung by Adrian Smith....I wore this out my senior year in HS. Amazing amazing song and voice...especially Bruce singing in the background 👍👍👍
I love every single Iron Maiden song, so I'll pick 5 different deep cuts: - Prodigal Son - Judgement of Heaven - The Unbeliever - The Educated Fool - The Man Who Would be King
My deep cuts... "Remember Tomorrow" from "Iron Maiden" (1980) "Total Eclipse" from "Run to the Hills" single (1982) "Back in the Village" from "Powerslave" (1984) "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" from "Somewhere in Time" (1986) "Ghost of the Navigator" from "Brave New World" (2000)
From the Di'Anno Era: Strange World From the Classic Era: Still Life From the Stripped Down Era: Afraid to Shoot Strangers From the Blaze Era: Judgement of Heaven From the Modern Era: The Thin Line Between Love and Hate
Pete, I agree Face in the Sand, a great pick & an outstanding deep track - Dance of the Death totally underrated - they were great on that tour even though it was a smaller venue in NYC I attended. I would add - Back in the Village, The Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Still Life & as Chris mentioned -Murders in the Rue Morgue - classic!!
My top 10 deep cuts: 10. Prodigal Son 9. The Alchemist 8. Public Enema Number One 7. The Prisoner 6. Total Eclipse 5. Mother of Mercy 4. Flash of the Blade 3. The Fugitive 2. Sun and Steel 1. Sea of Madness
I honestly feel Piece of Mind is a very overrated Iron Maiden album, but I love the last 3 tracks, To Tame a Land is by far my favorite off that album.
@Joe Metal Head I say it's overrated because I see a lot of people hype it up, but to me if I wanna listen to a Maiden album, it'd be one of the last ones to pop into my head. Aside from the last 3 tracks, none of that album really makes an impression with me, but that's just me. My two favorite Maiden albums are Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son which makes me a bit of an oddball compared to most fans.
@Joe Metal Head Damn FotD and HbtN, I can't stand those songs. Ok, FotD was the first I heard but it was in... 1992. So overplayed in concert. Except during the holy 2005 Early Days Tour, in Europe at least!
@Joe Metal Head You got that right, mate. 1990-1998 = RIP Maiden, boring tunes. But as we discovered Maiden at different times, our thoughts are pretty different. SiT is the first album I bought, back in 1993. And I still think it is brilliant, just like SSoaSS. Just as IM-->aforementioned album. 7 awesome records in a row (not counting LaD). And yeah, BNW is a fantastic album, no denying. Sorry, DoD and TFF are not on par with BNW, AMoLaD and TBoS.
@Joe Metal Head Steve doesn't want to play NotB (or RttH ?) for ages. For Christ sakes, we want a deep cut tour! Tired also of the songs you mentioned, spot on.
The Duellist - Powerslave Dream of Mirrors - Brave new world. Journeyman - Dance of Death The Legacy - A matter of life and death Shadows of the Valley - Book of Souls
🖤 the Maiden catalog! The tracks that come to mind: Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Children of the Damned, Flash of the Blade, 22 Acacia Avenue, Strange World.
Had a very busy day but was looking forward to tuning in to Sea of Tranquility, you know, to end the day properly, and what a wonderful surprise to see a Maiden episode! Great tracks picked by both. I would say that most of the songs from Blaze's era could be called deep cuts now, and for me, mainly: Sign of the Cross (sung masterfully by Bruce in the Rock in Rio DVD) and When Two Worlds Collide, I absolutely love that song. From Bruce's era, I love another deep cut that I see a lot have mentioned in the comments: Judas Be My Guide, 3:09 minutes of really scorching Maiden, I always thought that song would have worked amazing in a concert. But, as you guys said, the hits will be the hits and everyone wants to hear them. Honestly, Maiden is my absolute favorite and have had the opportunity to see them live only once (hugging with my friends and a bunch of new friends we made in the 10 hours we stood in line), crying our eyes out from the excitement of listening to all the hits we all know and love.
so good to see chris again...and he picked my all time favorite maiden track...'murders in the rue morgue'...i especially love their live version of it on 'maiden japan'...brilliant stuff...take care gentlemen....
Once again Pete thanks for doing this awesome list......here are my Iron Maiden deep cuts: - "Remember Tomorrow"- Iron Maiden debut album (1980) - "Strange World" - Iron Maiden debut album - "Purgatory"- Killers (1981) - "Innocent Exile" - Killers (1981) - "Invaders" - Number of the Beast (1982) - "Quest for Fire" - Piece of Mind (1983) - "Still Life" - Piece of Mind - "Back in the Village" - Powerslave (1984) - "Flash of the Blade" - Powerslave - "The Loneliness of the long distance runner" - Somewhere in Time (1986) - "The Prophecy" - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988) - "From here to Eternity" - Fear of the Dark (1992) - "Man on the Edge" - X-Factor (Blaze Bailey era and to me the only memorable song on the album) (1995) - "Dream of Mirrors" - Brave New World (2000) - "Gates of Tomorrow" - Dance of Death (2003) - "New Frontier" - Dance of Death (2003) - "The Legacy" - A Matter of Life and Death (2006) - "Shadows of the Valley" - Book of Souls (2015) of course there are so many honorable mentions when it comes to Iron Maiden but these are the ones I've picked so honorably to mention......lol
Great show Pete Awesome to see Chris back, hope the Iron Maiden history show is still in the works 100% agree, all your guest hosts are amazing, glad to see my fellow Canadian Martin Popoff joining your shows 1. Total Eclipse 2. Murders in the Rue Morgue 3. Alexander the Great 4. Still Life 5. Long Distance Runner
Face in the Sand, great pick Pete! I love the soft intro to this track. And The Man of Sorrows, fantastic piece. My picks: 1. When the Wild Wind Blows (my favourite Maiden song of all time) 2. The Loneliness of a Long Distance Runner 3. Afraid to Shoot Strangers/Judas Be My Guide 4. For the Greater Good of God (from the most underrated Maiden album) 5. Alexander the Great
5 of my favorite deep cuts in no particular order: Back in the Village The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner Judas Be My Guide Brighter Than a Thousand Suns The Fallen Angel
So nice to have Chris back...you two doing black Sabbath and Judas priest histories are my favorite episodes... listen to them when I clean, you two have great chemistry!!!
For Chris Alo: the early songs he selected, such as Prowler and Murders in the Rue Morgue, were played very frequently between 1980 and 1983. I have a few bootlegs and, circa 1981/1982, Iron Maiden played their first two albums in also their entirety in the same concert.
- Strange World(Spaceward Demos, 1978) - Burning Ambition(B-Side to Running Free) - Twilight Zone - Purgatory (Killers) - I've Got The Fire (Montrose cover - B-side to Flight Of Icarus) - Reach Out(Somewhere In Time B Sides - Adrian on vocals) - Public Enema Number One (NPFTD) - Fates Warning (NPFTD) - The Fugitive (FOTD) - Judas Be My Guide (FOTD) -The Aftermath (The X Factor) - Blood On The World's Hands (The X Factor) - Justice Of The Peace (The X Factor B-Side) - Como Estais Amigos(Virtual XI) - The Fallen Angel(Brave New World) - Montsegur (Dance Of Death) - Gates Of Tomorrow(Dance Of Death) - The Legacy (AMOLAD) - The Longest Day(AMOLAD) - Isle Of Avalon(The Final Frontier) - Starblind (The Final Frontier)
My selections: 1 - To Tame A Land (Piece of Mind) - for those who love the epic Hallowed Be Thy Name track and want more, this is the selection 2 - Deja Vu (Somewhere in Time) - Maybe not as catchy as the Yngwie song with this name, but still plenty of melody and musicianship 3 - Purgatory (Killers) - proto-thrash at its finest 4 - Judgment of Heaven (X-Factor) - The Blaze era was a different thing, but the lyrics/message of this song make it a personal favorite 5 - Mission From Harry (bonus track from re-issues) - Not even a song, but it is just hilarious. Provides a big dose of unexpected comedy that would make Spinal Tap themselves take notice. I still enjoy it. “It’s not fair to relay a message to people …"
My favorite deep cut Iron Maiden tracks 1. Losfer Words - Powerslave 2. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner - Somewhere In Time 3. Fear Is The Key - Fear of the Dark 4. Alexander The Great - Somewhere In Time 5. Murders in the Rue Morgue - Iron Maiden 6. Back In The Village - Powerslave 7. To Tame a Land - Piece of Mind 8. The Thin Line Between Love and Hate - Brave New World 9. Tears of a Clown - Book of Souls 10. Empire of the Clouds - Book of Souls
Ok. My five deep cuts. 1) Virus ( great Blaze Baylay era track. ) 2) The Prophesy. 3) Childhoods end 4) the Nomad ( nobody talks about this song. ) 5) Stranger in a strange land. (Criminally underrated.)
Iron Maiden is and has been my all time favorite band for over thirty years. Hallowed Be Thy Name was the first song I ever listened to by Iron Maiden back in the mid 80's at barely 8 years old. Iron Maiden have many deep cuts that are amazing songs and I wish that they would play more of them in the future. Some of my favorite deep cuts are Charlotte The Harlot, Purgatory, Another Life, Prowler, To Tame A Land, Still Life, 22 Acacia Ave., Total Eclipse, Strange World, Prodigal Son, Back In The Village, Flash Of The Blade, The Duelists, Twilight Zone, Caught Somewhere In Time, Sea Of Madness, The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner, Deja Vu, Infinite Dreams, Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, The Prophecy, Only The Good Die Young, Mother Russia, The Edge Of Darkness, Como Estais Amigos, Ghost Of The Navigator, The Thin Line Between Love And Hate, The Nomad, Journeyman, The Legacy, The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg, The Talisman, When The Wild Wind Blows, and Empire Of The Clouds. I do know that some of these songs have been played live, but very rarely. I would love if Iron Maiden did a tour of deep cut songs. The hardcore Iron Maiden fans like myself would definitely go see Iron Maiden on that tour easily. UP THE IRONS!!!!!!!!!!
I've made my list avoiding Pete & Cris's picks, covers (like "Reach Out"), or anything after "No Prayer". Just golden era stuff: Prodigal Son, Back in The Village, Sea of Madness, Public Enema Nº1, Sun And Steel
Iron Maiden have seen many times though out the years the first being 1981 opening for Judas Priest, at the Capital Centre, a tremendous concert with an excellent combination! Many to choose from but at the moment I will choose some Rockers including two here that we covered quite a bit back in the day among many others.......Those two will be 1.Innocent Exile & 2. I've Got the Fire 3.Genghis Kahn 4. Invaders 5. Holy Smoke!!!
A little late to discovering this great podcast, but below are my deep cuts for Iron Maiden (chronological order). My history with Maiden goes back to Piece of Mind (including seeing them in concert) but I've chosen some deep cuts from their later records, which are great and need to be appreciated. - Ghost of the Navigator - Paschendale - Brighter than a Thousand Suns - The Talisman - When the Wild Wind Blows
Welcome back, Chris Alo. My list contains two from a couple of albums, with nothing from a couple of three albums. From what I remember in the set lists, three albums get a lot of attention in the live circuit. After dropping those, the list is: "Strange World" and "Remember Tomorrow" from Iron Maiden "Prodigal Son" from Killers "To Tame and Land" and "Still Life" from Piece of Mind "Heaven Can Wait" from Somewhere in Time "When Two Worlds Collide" from Virtual XI "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" and "The Legacy" from A Matter of Life and Death (Full of deep cuts) "The Thin Line Between Love and Hate" and "Dream of Mirrors" from Brave New World "Journeyman" and "Faces in the Sand" from Dance of Death (There could be more) "Afraid to Shoot Strangers" from Fear of the Dark "Starblind" and "Isle of Avalon" from The Final Frontier (Others, too) "The Edge of Darkness" from The X Factor "Man of Sorrows" and "The Great Unknown" from Book of Souls (Everything here is a deep cut) My foray into heavy metal began with Iron Maiden through Ayreon's Universal Migrator, Pt 2 and the song "Into the Black Hole". From there I delved into the music of progressive metal, starting with Brave New World. I've been a fan since. The band's writing took a turn toward the "progressive" here--and though some of the songs on the latter albums require more attention, the writing represents some of the strongest they've had in the career of the band. Though his voice is not what it used to be his vocals still pack a significant punch. The musicianship remains stellar--with killer solos and loads of atmosphere and attitude.
Great to hear from Chris Alo. His story about the listening party for Judas Priest's Nostradamus album is hilarious! For those who have not heard it, do a search for History of Judas Priest part 2 and enjoy!
I appreciate all of your guests, but Chris will always be my favorite since he shares my tastes in Metal/Rock, and I love the great knowledge he often brings. Iron Maiden is a top 10 band for me, if not top 5. The leaders of the NWOBHM which defined what true Metal is. Not much I can say about them that hasn't already been said. They are legends. 1. Drifter 2. Sea of Madness 3. Judas Be My Guide 4. 2 A.M. 5. Dream of Mirrors P.S.: When you get to Black Sabbath, you absolutely MUST get Chris Alo back for that. Also, I recall him once saying in a video he was a big Danzig fan, so if you ever consider doing that band for Deep Cut Dive, and y'all's schedules align, I'm sure that'd make an entertaining episode as well. Another favorite band of mine.
Hi Pete and Chris. I admit i could not do my research on the later Iron Maiden albums so my picks are going to be from the early albums. sorry. 1. Prowler - Iron Maiden 2. Purgatory - Killers 3. The Prisoner? - Number of the Beast (Not Deep Enough?) 4. To Tame a Land - Piece of Mind or Still Life 5. Flash of the Blade - Powerslave 6. Deja Vu - Somewhere in Time
Correct me if I am wrong: Of the 1980s songs, Maiden has never played live the Ides of March (except on tape), Prodigal Son, Invaders (except Invasion), Gangland, Quest for Fire, Sun and Steel, Duellists, Flash of the Blade, Back in the Village, Loneliness (only ever played once), Dejavu, Alexander the Great, Prophecy, Only the Good die young. All the rest album tracks of the 1980s I have heard live on bootlegs or official releases (even Loneliness). Edit: I removed some titles, which Bob S corrected, the songs being Strange World and Genghis Khan.
Bob S I count Invaders and Invasion as different songs. Yep, Invasion is clearly an earlier version of Invaders, but the lyrics and melodies are very different. However, thank you very much for your input👍🏻😎 I can also confirm what you are saying, since I have a ”Maiden Japan” bootleg. It has Twilight Zone AND Genghis Khan AND Strange World in it. I should have doublechecked my album before making that claim😄
Transylvania / Strange World, Total Eclipse, Still Life and To Tame a Land, Losfer Words, Deja Vu, the Edge of Darkness, and most of SSOASS and AMOLAD would be some of my ‘under the radar’ choices (Edit: and Reach Out)
Great vid Pete. I have to do two lists. Classic era and then modern : To Tame A Land The Duellists Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner Alexander The Great Infinite Dreams Dream of Mirrors Paschendale The Legacy Starblind The Red and The Black
Great selection from a great Band that we love very much here in Chile and has the fortune to hear live a bunch of deep cuts. My top 5 deep cuts are: 1. Flash of the blade 2. The loneliness of a long distance runner (that's a long name for a song) 3. Still life 4. Ghost of the navigator 5. Talisman
Some suggestions - I used the criteria that the song could a) not be a single, b) not on any greatest hits album, c) not played for 20 years (if at all) OR not played again after the initial tour to support the album (in the case of more recent songs). These songs all qualified 1. Prodigal Son (Killers) 2. Still Life (Piece of Mind) 3. Sea of Madness (SIT) 4. Run Silent Run Deep (No Prayer) 5. Fear is the Key (FOTD) 6. The Educated Fool (Virtual X1) 7. Como Estais Amigos (Virtual X1) 8. Montségur (Dance) 9. The Longest Day (AMOLAD) 10 Isle of Avalon (Final Frontier) Personally I'd love to hear any one of these live. Appreciate the Blaze ones don't appear in too many wish lists, but I think these two are very strong songs
I love the literary story arc songs. 1. The Legacy - A matter of life or death 2. To Tame a Land - Piece of Mind 3. Empire of the Clouds - Book of Souls 4. Stranger in a Strange Land - Somewhere in Time 5. Alexander the Great - Somewhere in Time
A few notes on the songs you've mentioned: Still Life was played on the latter part of the Seventh Son tour, and was immortalized in the Maiden England live video. I was hoping they would bring it back on the 2012 Maiden England tour, but they did not. Maiden played Paschendale on a few select dates early in the pre-Final Frontier tour. Early in the tour, it had alternated with Dance of Death before they settled on the latter. Actually, the pre-Frontier tour was pretty cool as the bulk of their set was post-reunion material (BNW, Dod, AMoLaD, and a preview of El Dorado), with the classic material coming at the end. The US run for the Early Years tour was mostly Ozzfest dates, where they did break out the "hits" rather than deep cuts. Typically, their Ozzfest set was 10 songs, but I had the fortune of seeing the Indianapolis show where Maiden got more time due to Ozzy's throat problems. There, they did 14 songs, about 80 minutes, including Prowler and other songs they were only doing in Europe, or on select US headlining gigs.
Blaze Bayley fanboy here! My five choises are: 1. Lord of the Flies 2. When Two Worlds Collide 3. Prodigal Son 4. No Prayer For the Dying 5. Lightning Strikes Twice
Face in the sand is a great song as well as paschendale from that album Killers Still life Caught somewhere in time Only the good die young great band great vid guys
I'm sure I saw Maiden do Prowler as their first encore once (in Canada, sometime in the past 20 years). When the crowd demanded more, they came back on stage with Prowler. And then they played stuff from Seventh Son. It was amazing.
Here are mine for Iron Maiden; 1. Prowler (debut album) 2. Flight of Icarus (Piece of mind, Pete introduced me to this one whether he knows it or not, lol) 3. Flash of the Blade (Powerslave) 4. The Clairvoyant (7th son of a 7th son) 5. The Red and the Black (Book of Souls)
Strange World (Iron Maiden) Invaders (The Number of the Beast) Still Life(Piece of Mind) Reach Out (Somewhere in Time B-Side w/Adrian Smith on Lead Vocals) Only The Good Die Young (Seventh Son of a Seventh Son) Chains of Misery (Fear of the Dark) The Thin Line Between Love and Hate (Brave New World) The Man Who Would Be King (The Final Frontier)
“Reach Out” is a cool B-side with Adrian Smith on lead vocal and Bruce backing him up. A bit of a deviation from their signature sound, but such a catchy tune.
I would say No Prayer For The Dying onwards (especially both blaze albums) are mostly deep cuts. Everything from the 1980s are usually played then 90s/00s
Here are my favorites: With the exception of Isle of Avalon, they have indeed been played live, but only Stranger in a Strange Land was played on a tour separate from the original tour (In that case, it was on the 99 reunion tour, and even then it didn't last for the entire tour). Wasting Love Out of the Shadows Edge of Darkness Isle of Avalon Stranger in a Strange Land
For me, the following list are amazing deep cuts: Charlotte The Harlot- Iron Maiden Twilight Zone- Killers Die With your boots On/Sun and Steel - Piece of Mind (I chose two as i'm not sure if Die with your boots meets the criteria) Gangland- Number of the beast ( I respectfully disagree with Pete and Chris) Back in the Village - Powerslave Sea of Madness/Heaven can wait -Somewhere in Time (Same reasoning as Piece of Mind) I know thats more than 5, I hope know one complains but there are many more to name Including songs from the Blaze Baily era, also a final two honorable mentions are Nomad (Brave New World) and Montsegur (Dance of Death).
1. Strange World 2. Total Eclipse 3. Fear is the Key 4. Blood on the World's Hands 5. The Longest Day 6. Reach Out (B-Side from Wasted Years Single feat. Adrian Smith on vocals)
With Maiden being one of my favorite bands of all time... this is tough. To tame a land would be my choice... today. Great to see Chris back... he’s awesome 👏 🤘🔥🎶🍺
A deep cut dive on Iron Maiden is a delightful enterprise in and of itself. The exercise takes you down a fantastic wormhole into one of greatest bands in the history of metal music. My list is going to be songs that weren't only deep cuts for the sake of pulling out something obscure that people should give a listen. I'm going for songs that caught my ear from the first time I heard them and have stayed favorites of mine despite the lack of attention they get from the casual fans. The only other caveat I'm going to throw in there is, Maiden play more deep cuts live than most bands so, I'm not going to observe that "rule" on this list. 5) The Prophecy ~ 7th Son of a 7th Son 4) Dream of Mirrors ~ Brave New World 3) Face In The Sand ~ Dance Of Death 3) The Legacy ~ A Matter Of Life And Death 2) Back In The Village ~ Powerslave 1) Transylvania ~ Iron Maiden HM: For anyone who hasn't given any of the new Maiden albums a fair shake, try No More Lies, Paschendale, The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg, Blood Brothers and The Wicker Man. You're really missing out on an incredible part of their musical legacy without the albums they've released in the last twenty years. These albums are worthy of their place in the catalog. They're much better than No Prayer For The Dying, Fear Of The Dark, Virtual X and The X Factor. I have some of them ranked over albums like Killers and Somewhere In Time too. To be fair. All Dickenson Maiden albums are great and Paul DiAnno's era was fantastic as well. Blaze's tenure didn't resonate with me but, it wasn't necessarily bad. It just wasn't Maiden to me. Without Bruce and Adrian it felt a little off. Maybe a little forced. Bruce is an iconic front man and his presence carries some serious gravitas. It's significantly noticeable in the rest of the player's performances when he's on board.
P.S. Strange World from the debut is one of the best songs of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal era. Loved that song from the first time I heard it in '82. That's a serious deep cut for you ;)
This is what got me into collecting Maiden bootlegs, to find all those tracks they only played live a few times. Best bootleg show ever was '83 Hammersmith Odeon, London.
The entire Somewhere in Time album besides Wasted Years is an underrated deep cut. Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Deja Vu, Sea of Madness...
- Flash of the Blade
- Deja Vu
- Public Enema Number One
- Judas Be My Guide
- Lord of Light
Lord of Light is incredible, I love AMOLAD
@@hemispheres789 I love Amolad so much! So underrated!
Public Enema ...pearl .
Judas my guide is killer
All great songs. . Public Enema Number One and Judas Be My Guide are especially underrated. Very good list!

1. Still Life
2. Brighter Than A Thousand Suns
3. Deja Vu
4. The Nomad
5. Montsegur
Love the Nomad and Brighter Than A Thousand Suns
Murders in the Rue Morgue was my introduction to Maiden and is one of my all time favorite songs.
I used to record off the radio to cassette, like everyone, and the station played a 3-song set from a recent Maiden concert, sort of introducing the band to many of us. I got Wrathchild, Murders in the Rue Morgue, and Killers, all live. Played that cassette until it died and cannot believe those live tracks are lost to me forever.
1. Still Life
2. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
3. Losfer Words
4. Hooks in You
5. Dream of Mirrors
very good selection
Man, have you been reading my list? :) I was and I still am also going to put

Alongside them I put
4) Fates Warning and
5) The Assassin.
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is another one of my favorites ❤
Dude! Very nice!
I like Hooks In You,but have always felt that would have been better suited for the Tattooed Millionaire album
Reach Out.....B side to Wasted Years. This was sung by Adrian Smith....I wore this out my senior year in HS. Amazing amazing song and voice...especially Bruce singing in the background 👍👍👍
Found this on Wikipedia: "Song was previously performed live by Nicko McBrain and Smith's side project The Entire Population of Hackney."
I love that song
It rocks. Adrian needs to sing more. He sounds a lot like Dave Walker from Savoy Brown
1. No Prayer For The Dying
2. Murders In The Rue Morgue
3. Infinite Dreams
4. Deja Vu
5. To Tame A Land
No Prayer For The Dying is an amazing song
Also my pick: "Strange World" from one of the greatest debuts of all time.
Chris how can you remember what songs were played at all those great concerts? Great show Pete, with a great cohost
Agree, greatest ballad ever.
I love that song aswell and u are right there debut is one of there best albums and one of the best debuts of all time.
I love every single Iron Maiden song, so I'll pick 5 different deep cuts:

- The Man Who Would be King
I picked Judgement also from X, and Don't Look to the Eyes of a Stranger from XI.

My favourite band, all of their songs are absolutely perfect! \m/
My top 10 deep cuts:
10. Prodigal Son
9. The Alchemist
8. Public Enema Number One
7. The Prisoner
6. Total Eclipse
5. Mother of Mercy
4. Flash of the Blade
3. The Fugitive
2. Sun and Steel
1. Sea of Madness
To Tame a Land is my favorite deep cut of theirs.
Great show again Pete ! Thanks for your dedication to the channel and the fans !
Welcome back, Chris! Thanks for the recs, guys!

- When the wild wind blows
Just watched this again ! Great video , great guest (Alo ! )
so good to see chris again...and he picked my all time favorite maiden track...'murders in the rue morgue'...i especially love their live version of it on 'maiden japan'...brilliant stuff...take care gentlemen....

- Alexander the Great

The Fallen Angel
So nice to have Chris back...you two doing black Sabbath and Judas priest histories are my favorite episodes... listen to them when I clean, you two have great chemistry!!!
For Chris Alo: the early songs he selected, such as Prowler and Murders in the Rue Morgue, were played very frequently between 1980 and 1983. I have a few bootlegs and, circa 1981/1982, Iron Maiden played their first two albums in also their entirety in the same concert.
My Top 5
# Murders in the Rue Morgue

- Starblind (The Final Frontier)
Burning Ambition has always been a favorite!
Fates Warning is amazing, probably my favorite track on No Prayer.
@@RipCityJB yeah it kicks ass! It's also one of the first songs Steve Harris has written - He wrote it back in '72/'73
Great job Chris glad you’re back.👍 I need to dig into those first two albums I have somehow overlooked them through the years.
My selections:
1 - To Tame A Land (Piece of Mind) - for those who love the epic Hallowed Be Thy Name track and want more, this is the selection
2 - Deja Vu (Somewhere in Time) - Maybe not as catchy as the Yngwie song with this name, but still plenty of melody and musicianship
3 - Purgatory (Killers) - proto-thrash at its finest
4 - Judgment of Heaven (X-Factor) - The Blaze era was a different thing, but the lyrics/message of this song make it a personal favorite
5 - Mission From Harry (bonus track from re-issues) - Not even a song, but it is just hilarious. Provides a big dose of unexpected comedy that would make Spinal Tap themselves take notice. I still enjoy it. “It’s not fair to relay a message to people …"
Thank you guys for your Deep Cut Dive: Iron Maiden 🎤🎸🎵🥁

1) Virus ( great Blaze Baylay era track. )
2) The Prophesy.
3) Childhoods end
4) the Nomad ( nobody talks about this song. )
5) Stranger in a strange land.
Just golden era stuff:
Prodigal Son,
Back in The Village,
Sea of Madness,
Public Enema Nº1,
Sun And Steel
- Ghost of the Navigator
- Paschendale
- Brighter than a Thousand Suns
- The Talisman
- When the Wild Wind Blows
I could listen about Peter & Chris all day about topics I don’t even know or follow.
1. Stranger in a Strange Land 2. The Nomad 3. For Greater Good of God 4. Death of the Celts 5. Hallowed be Thy Name
1. Alexander the Great
2. Empire of the Clouds
3. Paschendale
4. Out of the Silent Planet
5. Rainmaker
(Super tough choice, they are amazing!)
1. Run Silent, Run Deep
2. Deja Vu
3. Only the Good Die Young
4. Purgatory
5. Fates Warning
Welcome back, Chris Alo. My list contains two from a couple of albums, with nothing from a couple of three albums. From what I remember in the set lists, three albums get a lot of attention in the live circuit. After dropping those, the list is:
"Strange World" and "Remember Tomorrow" from Iron Maiden
"Prodigal Son" from Killers
"To Tame and Land" and "Still Life" from Piece of Mind
"Heaven Can Wait" from Somewhere in Time
"When Two Worlds Collide" from Virtual XI
"The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" and "The Legacy" from A Matter of Life and Death (Full of deep cuts)
"The Thin Line Between Love and Hate" and "Dream of Mirrors" from Brave New World
"Journeyman" and "Faces in the Sand" from Dance of Death (There could be more)
"Afraid to Shoot Strangers" from Fear of the Dark
"Starblind" and "Isle of Avalon" from The Final Frontier (Others, too)
"The Edge of Darkness" from The X Factor
"Man of Sorrows" and "The Great Unknown" from Book of Souls (Everything here is a deep cut)
My foray into heavy metal began with Iron Maiden through Ayreon's Universal Migrator, Pt 2 and the song "Into the Black Hole".
8-5-2000 IRON MAIDEN- HALFORD- QUEENSRYCHE / sold out show at the INFAMOUS / MADISON Square GARDEN New YORK CITY
Great to see Chris back!
Bring Chris back more often. He makes great contributions to the metal/hard rock related episodes.
1. Drifter
2. Sea of Madness
3. Judas Be My Guide
4. 2 A.M.
5. Dream of Mirrors
P.S.: When you get to Black Sabbath, you absolutely MUST get Chris Alo back for that. Also, I recall him once saying in a video he was a big Danzig fan, so if you ever consider doing that band for Deep Cut Dive, and y'all's schedules align, I'm sure that'd make an entertaining episode as well. Another favorite band of mine.
1.- Prodigal son
2.- To tame a land
3.- Reach Out
4.- The prophecy
5.- Montsegur
Great chat guys, Iron Maiden are truly a legendary band.
Hi Pete and Chris. I admit i could not do my research on the later Iron Maiden albums so my picks are going to be from the early albums. sorry.
1. Prowler - Iron Maiden
2. Purgatory - Killers
3. The Prisoner? - Number of the Beast (Not Deep Enough?)
4. To Tame a Land - Piece of Mind or Still Life
5. Flash of the Blade - Powerslave
They did play Strange World in 80 and 81 in Japan, Ides of March in 1979, Genghis Khan they played throughout 1981 tour except USA.
Invaders in 1979 as Invasion (Invaders is better, it's a shame they didn't play it ever)
Ides of March in 1979 may have been an earlier recording though, I'm not sure.
Transylvania / Strange World, Total Eclipse, Still Life and To Tame a Land, Losfer Words, Deja Vu, the Edge of Darkness, and most of SSOASS and AMOLAD would be some of my ‘under the radar’ choices (Edit: and Reach Out)
Chris is a great guest! Brings a lot of energy.
This is fun-- I know the well-known songs but don't know the "real" stuff, so I'm listening to each song as you reveal them and really diggin it!
Great vid Pete. I have to do two lists. Classic era and then modern :
To Tame A Land
The Duellists
Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
Alexander The Great
Infinite Dreams
Dream of Mirrors
Paschendale
The Legacy
Starblind
The Red and The Black
Innocent Exile
Prodigal Son
Sun & Steel
Alexander the Great
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (Title track)
+ Empire of the Clouds :)
Great selection from a great Band that we love very much here in Chile and has the fortune to hear live a bunch of deep cuts. My top 5 deep cuts are:
1. Flash of the blade
2. The loneliness of a long distance runner (that's a long name for a song)
3. Still life
4. Ghost of the navigator
5. Talisman
Yeah, Chris Allen is a great co host. You both killed it with the Maiden deep cuts. Hard to (one up) any of these picks.
Some suggestions - I used the criteria that the song could a) not be a single, b) not on any greatest hits album, c) not played for 20 years (if at all) OR not played again after the initial tour to support the album (in the case of more recent songs).
These songs all qualified
1. Prodigal Son (Killers)
2. Still Life (Piece of Mind)
3. Sea of Madness (SIT)
4. Run Silent Run Deep (No Prayer)
5. Fear is the Key (FOTD)
6. The Educated Fool (Virtual X1)
7. Como Estais Amigos (Virtual X1)
8. Montségur (Dance)
9. The Longest Day (AMOLAD)
10 Isle of Avalon (Final Frontier)
Personally I'd love to hear any one of these live. Appreciate the Blaze ones don't appear in too many wish lists, but I think these two are very strong songs
Love when Chris is on the show!
my 1st cover band on Ohio did "Murders in the Rue Morgue" note-for-note and peeps in the crowd always thought it was an original :P \m/
Damn Pete, those are some killer choices!
Isle of Avalon, Face in the Sand and The Man of Sorrows definitely deserve more recognition.
Awesome picks! Definitely Strange World! Mine are Sun And Steel, Prodigal Son, Deja-Vu, Wasting Love and Judas My Guide
I love the literary story arc songs.
1. The Legacy - A matter of life or death
2. To Tame a Land - Piece of Mind
3. Empire of the Clouds - Book of Souls
4. Stranger in a Strange Land - Somewhere in Time
5. Alexander the Great - Somewhere in Time
A few notes on the songs you've mentioned:
Still Life was played on the latter part of the Seventh Son tour, and was immortalized in the Maiden England live video.
My five choises are:
1. Lord of the Flies
2. When Two Worlds Collide
3. Prodigal Son
4. No Prayer For the Dying
5. Lightning Strikes Twice
Face in the sand is a great song as well as paschendale from that album
Killers
Still life
Caught somewhere in time
Only the good die young
great band great vid guys
I was at that Great Woods show. How was that 20 years ago?
I'm sure I saw Maiden do Prowler as their first encore once (in Canada, sometime in the past 20 years). When the crowd demanded more, they came back on stage with Prowler.
And then they played stuff from Seventh Son.
It was amazing.
Here are mine for Iron Maiden;
1. Prowler (debut album)
2. Flight of Icarus (Piece of mind, Pete introduced me to this one whether he knows it or not, lol)
3. Flash of the Blade (Powerslave)
4. The Clairvoyant (7th son of a 7th son)
5. The Red and the Black (Book of Souls)
Strange World (Iron Maiden)
Invaders (The Number of the Beast)
Still Life(Piece of Mind)
Reach Out (Somewhere in Time B-Side w/Adrian Smith on Lead Vocals)
Only The Good Die Young (Seventh Son of a Seventh Son)
Chains of Misery (Fear of the Dark)
The Thin Line Between Love and Hate (Brave New World)
The Man Who Would Be King (The Final Frontier)
Reach Out is a great B side
Only the good is a great song. 7th son my favourite maiden album.
“Reach Out” is a cool B-side with Adrian Smith on lead vocal and Bruce backing him up. A bit of a deviation from their signature sound, but such a catchy tune.
Pete love the show,
Back in the Village
Murders in the Rue Mourge
The Prisoner
The Drifter
Transylvania
Pete what about the Good Rats !!
Wasting Love
Out of the Shadows
Edge of Darkness
Isle of Avalon
Stranger in a Strange Land
For me, the following list are amazing deep cuts:
Charlotte The Harlot- Iron Maiden
Twilight Zone- Killers
Die With your boots On/Sun and Steel - Piece of Mind (I chose two as i'm not sure if Die with your boots meets the criteria)
Gangland- Number of the beast ( I respectfully disagree with Pete and Chris)
Back in the Village - Powerslave
Sea of Madness/Heaven can wait -Somewhere in Time (Same reasoning as Piece of Mind)
I know thats more than 5, I hope know one complains but there are many more to name Including songs from the Blaze Baily era, also a final two honorable mentions are Nomad (Brave New World) and Montsegur (Dance of Death).
1. Strange World
2. Total Eclipse
3. Fear is the Key
4. Blood on the World's Hands
5. The Longest Day
Murders in the Rue Morgue was even played with Blaze Bailey on the first European leg of Virtual XI (April-May 1998).
5) The Prophecy ~ 7th Son of a 7th Son
4) Dream of Mirrors ~ Brave New World
3) Face In The Sand ~ Dance Of Death
3) The Legacy ~ A Matter Of Life And Death
2) Back In The Village ~ Powerslave
1) Transylvania ~ Iron Maiden
HM: For anyone who hasn't given any of the new Maiden albums a fair shake, try No More Lies, Paschendale, The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg, Blood Brothers and The Wicker Man.
