    Game changer.
    New white belt here and just tried this against 4 blue belts: none could get any hooks in in turtle or smash me in side control at all...
    The biggest lessons on my first day were ”Don't expose your elbows” and ”alwasy be active on defense”
    I know that I still have a lot to learn, but I'm not just ”waiting to be tapped” when my guard gets passed anymore. I can actually do something to save myself and that's amazing.

    • @lordtains
      @lordtains Рік тому +3

      Yeah man, and having good defense/escapes as a white belt is the best foundation you can have. Gordon Ryan said that as well; if your defense is great, you're not afraid to try out new techniques, because (as Priit said) one mistake doesn't mean you're dead. If your defense is bad, you're afraid of making mistakes and might fear going for submissions for example, because you might lose your position and then you might and up on bottom and get subbed. If you can trust your defense and escapes, you're not afraid to try out new things, and your training is accelerated.

    I am obsessed with Danaher's system, and dare I say I am equally obsessed with Priit's defensive system. My training partners and I have been learning, practicing, experimenting and pressure testing everything in the Defensive BJJ system and it is revolutionizing our games.
    But we have a problem - nobody can do anything to each other anymore. :D
    Just kidding, that's not a problem, but a scientific conundrum that needs to be further researched and experimented upon. I am also a Judoka/wrestler kinda guy who really prefers to stand back up a lot of the time (contra something like inverting to guard), because I enjoy the immediate takedown or throw upon a successful stand-up WITH the proper control points.
    Defensive BJJ system has allowed me breathing room, space, and mental clarity while under attack to set up my preferred grips and timings for a safe option back to standing. Honestly, this is absolutely phenomenal work and I am deeply humbled and impressed.
    If Jiujitsu is a body of martial science, then Priit Mihkelson is changing the very paradigm BJJ is operating in. He is, in a Kuhnian sense, directly causing a fundamental revolution in our understanding of the unified theory of jiujitsu. The paradigm upon which we view jiujitsu, our assumptions/axioms about how jiujitsu works, and our understanding of the optimal path to victory in the sport of jiujitsu is literally changing day-by-day. Is this not revolutionary work?

      @Andrew Let's say that it would be far less effective.

    • @thos1618
      @thos1618 Рік тому

      Agreed. This is a challenge to the current paradigm that even Danaher and his creations operate in. I expect that over the course of the next decade, the defensive paradigm will shift, but like in the scientific world, proper credit will probably not be given. BJJ celebs will start posting short clips of these ideas on Instagram with different terminology. After 20 years, people will pretend this is the way it's always been done.
      You've probably seen gym owners teaching moves word-for-word off the Danaher DVD's and pretending that it's just their regular system. This is how it goes.

    • @thos1618
      @thos1618 Рік тому +2

      I'm a head coach and am always carefully thinking about my gym's 'Meta'. Whatever I teach will have ripple effects that change the outcomes of rolls and alter the perspective of students about what Jiu-Jitsu is. I was initially concerned that if this stuff worked, submissions might disappear and the students would get bored.
      In reality, it's the kind of the opposite, when people have defensive structures to fall back on they become more willing to take risks. If a Bluebelt shoots up a Triangle and gets badly stacked, they know that if the pressure becomes too much and the legs break open they'll land in Running Man and fight from there. Without a defensive structure to fall back on, that might have meant spending minutes in Bottom Side-Control, where they hopelessly Shrimp, Bridge and Push.
      Even if it did work to the extent that Submissions disappeared, we'd see more opportunities to STAND UP and practice takedown skills.
      Win-Win.

    Interesting. This came through my UA-cam feed today ... and I happened to have Rigan MAchado with me for a few weeks - and so we watched it together. Firstly, some interesting ideas ... I would like to have been at this camp to learn more. We used to utilize what we called 'tripod Turtle' some 30 years back - but only fleetingly - before we executed a back walk-around turnover, a sit-out, invert to guard, arm-roll, etc, etc. I am sure there are intangibles here I cannot appreciate - but interesting. Rigan pointed out the Uncle Helio used to fight very defensively like this - but the problems arose when transitioning from attack to defense (as it is with boxing, etc). Also, Rigan pointed out that we need to be careful with the tripod turtle as a few people have broken their necks. in similar situations, when necks twisted a little the wrong way and then powerful driving forces applied 'just so'. I like the transitions between 'running man', tripod turtle, 'panda', etc. Seems worthwhile learning these to build basic defensive skills - then layering on attacks and counter-measures. All in all - interesting. Wouldn't mind spending some time on this with Priit. PS: Rigan also pointed out the obvious ... all will be revealed if the ideas make it into, and prevail, in competition.

    There is one very important difference between the panda and mount bottom. Nobody every voluntarily puts themselves in mount bottom and you are actievely encouraging people to put themselves voluntarily in panda position which you yourself compare to mount bottom which is one of the worst position in BJJ. So the question is why in hell should anybody put themselves voluntarily in a position that you yourself compare to one of the worst positions in BJJ.

    • @DefensiveBJJ
      @DefensiveBJJ 3 роки тому +5

      But is BJJ not about feeling comfortable in a very uncomfortable positions? Knowing everything that there is to know about those positions is helping people to not get stuck there …it is a dichotomy that a lot of people to seem to understand 🙂

    • @samirrimas
      @samirrimas 3 роки тому

      Spending time in bad positions to understand it and be able to get out of it is one thing. But actively transitioning to bad positions without the intent to practice getting out of it but rather seeing it as some kind of "safe" position to be in is a whole another story. And from what im understanding of your video you are telling people that it is ok to actively transition into panda which i think is worse than giving full side mount control because in side mount your opponent needs his hand and feet to control you and thus cant freely punch you also you can try to defend punches in full side mount while in panda you are helpless against punches. And the only thing your opponent needs is preassure with his body to keep you there and can use his punches and kicks freely to attack you.

Clearly Mike Tyson was not able to attack because he valued defense and keeping his elbows to his ribs and his chin tucked. That is the equivalent of what you are saying in boxing analogy. Just because you learn fundamental defensive postures and structures does not mean you cannot or should not attack. Mike Tyson in his defensive posture and structure would slip punches and get to superior angles and unleash hell. The same can be said about Priit's defensive postures.

Surprise man, losing 5 points (on video Priit shows how to lose guard pass and knee on the belly) means high percentage lose of the match. If you like examples how it looks in real live: ua-cam.com/video/WRsKCekH4_o/v-deo.html Keenan vs Telles, ua-cam.com/video/UcVFhIhUzmQ/v-deo.html or Priit vs Martin Aedma. More fights: ua-cam.com/video/cmqlDjytr0w/v-deo.html AJ (lightweight) vs Telles.
