Understand what he is saying about how wrestlers fight for underhooks and how hard wrestlers defend underhooks with hand fighting, if u could do that in a standing position u could do it on the ground. It makes total sense to use a wrestlers mentality in conjunction with bjj, combine both arts together?

@@Neviksir agreed but traditionally bjj hasn’t emphasized the importance of defending against underhooks nearly enough. The best guys all do it intuitively but it needs to taught you students earlier. There is no reason to accept the cross face side control position first and then work to put in frames.

The odd thing is I've incorporated a lot of these 'techniques' unconsciously over the years, but I thought it was me becoming 'sloppier'. I just found that these are less 'energetic' routes, and have been intuitive. Pritt of course has taken this to the next level.

I feel the same. For instance ive been doing hawkin without knowing its hawkin and just thought i was doing sloppy jiujitsu or anti jiujitsu and just being an annoying partner. Its interesting to find out that ive been just doing unorthodox jiujitsu and im making my partners better by having to refine their attacks.

You’re so right about the fallacy of authority in jiujitsu. If some techniques don’t come from a certain champion or whatever it doesn’t count. But the criteria should be if it works or not. And we can see these techniques in competition anyway.

The weird thing is my professor doesn’t teach any of this and would probably disagree with me doing it, but I find these postures and ideas more effective than the side control escapes taught in class. We teach from straight on your back, frame, hip up, and then hip escape. That never works on anyone strong or who knows jiujitsu. A brand new guy it will work but anything will work with them that’s not pure strength. These ideas you’re teaching I can understand more easily than the techniques taught in class, and when I apply them they work even against higher belts. I still have more to learn but if it wasn’t for this stuff I’d be getting much more wrecked by upper belts. It used to be after getting my guard passed I’d just wait to get tapped out and sometimes I’d tap early just because I was bored of waiting for them to submit me. Because again they teach the defenses but the defenses never work against someone better, or someone bigger who knows some jiujitsu. The regular escapes don’t work on them it just ends up being strength vs strength and thrashing around. But the Priit stuff for me is so effective it started working as soon as I tried it. I was never comfortable giving side control or turtle but now I am comfortable to even start in those positions and work on these defenses. It makes defense a fun game and makes like losing guard and stuff less of a big deal. It’s not like if I get my guard passed I may as well forfeit.

There is a brown belt in class that loves to grab the bottom arm and flatten people. I was never aware of what he was doing, I was more focused on him passing the guard to side control. I fell victim every time because the grabbing of the bottom arm. The running man has taken away his arm grabbing technique because it forces me to remember to hide the bottom arm from being grabbed. Here in the states they mostly show attacks and maybe one or two counters to the attack if they have time to show it. Priit's system has worked for me and it has also helped me correct and see some of the mistakes I make during my rolls with other students. Happy new year!!!

Go to 42:00. He explained that you start learning the fundamental concepts of protecting against the underhook using this and then you gradually open up more as soon as you develop the timing and good habits. Same as boxing, you start with the best defense (i.e. peek-a-boo style) and you gradually go to more advanced tech (dropping your hands). The aim is to improve your passive defense and then eventually progress to being more active. This is great to maintain consistency in training because there are days when you have to roll light and it is easier to maintain motivation when you're not getting pinned all the time. He also explained in another video that his club also improved their offense because of their strong defense.

No footage of either him or his students proving its effectiveness in real competition? Danaher takes teenagers and turns them into elite competitors in adult divisions... for me that's proof that a system is successful. I'm not even saying that some of the concepts that he shows aren't good, but he doesn't seem to get that you can't go around proclaiming that your whatever is the best and that your system is revolutionary when your only evidence is bashful seminar attendees trying to noodle around with your elbows a bit. It's simple, all he has to do is release footage of either him or his students being impenetrable in high level competition and then his claims would be justified.
