    Part 1: • Tascam 244 tutorial / ...
    Part 2: • Tascam 244 tutorial / ...
    Part 3: • Tascam 244 tutorial / ...
    Part 1 covers recording of 3 tracks:
    Tr. 1 - Drum loop out of Garageband
    Tr. 2 - Bass guitar, through a Crate bass amplifier, miked with a Sennheiser e602
    Tr. 3 - Electric piano, played live in Garageband
    Part 2 shows how to bounce tracks 1+2+3 to track 4.
    Part 3 contains recording of 3 extra tracks:
    Tr. 1 - Electric guitar, through a Crate bass amp (!), miked with a Sennheiser MD421
    Tr. 2 - Grand piano, played live in Garageband
    Tr. 3 - B3 Organ, played live in Garageband
    Part 3 also shows how to mixdown, with a Lexicon MPX500 reverb connected to the Aux Send.

    Have this recorder for many years in the 80-90s. By far the best multi track machine at that time. I loved it! And to work with real physical knobs is something that i miss with Garageband or other programs. Thanks for bringing this memories back :)

    I own a Tascam 244 and never did much with it mainly because I never bought a drum machine and had no solution for the drum tracks. One of these days I'm going to dust it off and give it another go. Thanks for making it easier.

      @@MultitrackCassetteFans Thank you. I will keep that in mind. It has not been turned on in over 20 years. I later bought a Korg D3200 and that is sitting idle also, LOL. I always thought the tascam sounded surprisingly good and it is fairly simple which would be just perfect now for having some fun. Fortunately I have a good friend in the electronics repair business who should be able to fix any issue providing a suitable part is available. :)

    Great series! Just had my 244 fully serviced and looking to digitize a bunch of my bands original music as I’ve uncovered lots the 4 track tapes we recorded on this machine from the 80’s. I have a Behringer QX1202 USB mixer connected to my M1 MacBook Pro and was thinking of using GarageBand to covert them to digital to stream or burn to CD. Would I run the 244’s Line Outs into 2 individual channels on my mixer, then arm two tracks in GarageBand? What outputs would I use on the 244 then to monitor audio through my monitor speakers? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi, great tutorials! I was wondering can you set up the mix with effects (like you have the reverb) but individually? I mean, can you send the signal out and back individually and not all together? For instance, if one would like to add echo to a percussion track while adding phaser to a guitar track and reverb to vocals or drums, and manipulate these effects live. I am curious as how Dub music is produced, ie: using the mixing board as part of the live mix when doing the master.. Thanks for posting!

      Gmo C Hi and thanks! For individual effects per track, use the insert points. I made a video on these: ua-cam.com/video/VCqU-z5zo0o/v-deo.html

    thank you for the insight on the tascam 244. i recently got a hold of one in great condition. and I'm curious to what is the best way to connect the tascam 244 for the audio playback through my mixer then monitors. how do you have the tascam connected in these videos?

    • @MultitrackCassetteFans
      @MultitrackCassetteFans  6 років тому +1

      Alan Argotti Thanks for watching!
      Normally you would use the Line Out left and right, while mixing down your recording, if you want to mix on the 244.
      But if you want to mix it on your external mixer, then you have to connect the 4 individual Tape Outs to 4 different channels on your mixer.
      (For my videos I use the headphone output, but that’s only because I want to closely mimic a real recording situation.)

As you told you me before about Tracking out your mixes into your focusrite scarlett . Im curious to know if you track out with the 'Line Out' Or 'Tape Out' of the Tascam 244 connected to your focusrite. ?

    Great demonstration! thanks alot to show how to make a mix like the old times. Dennis, i am wondering if standard cassette tapes can be used or you need special ones? I know standards ones have in fact 4 tracks, 2 per side, L & R. This is the case for tascam 244 and if not, special cassette tapes a easy to find? Thanks again.

    • @MultitrackCassetteFans
      @MultitrackCassetteFans  4 роки тому +1

      Alexandrei Savirov Thanks! Yes, you can use the same standard cassettes that were used in regular consumer hifi cassette recorders. The only other important thing is to use 60 or 90 minute tapes, not 120 (too thin/weak), and tascam recorders work best with Type II (or chrome) tape. Type I (or normal) is also possible, but these machines were optimized forType II. Don’t use metal tapes

    How would you go about panning a track from left to right ear?? For example at the end of the stereo mix of Interstellar Overdive by Pink Floyd where the track is panned back and forth from the left ear to right ear and vice versa a few times in a short amount of time and gives off a psychedelic effect.

    • @MultitrackCassetteFans
      @MultitrackCassetteFans  5 років тому +1

      During mixdown, you can turn the pan knob of any of the 4 tracks left to right and back. I’ve just listened to the Pink Floyd song, and it seems like the whole song is panned back and forth. To do that on the 244, you would have to turn all 4 pan knobs at the same time, which is a bit of a hassle. Instead, you could hook up a little mixer to the 244 “stereo out” and do the panning there

      Hi Álvaro, I usually mix down to stereo into my computer. So the final step is digital (unfortunately 😀). You could however mix it down to a stereo cassette recorder, or to a reel-to-reel recorder, but I don’t have any of that. It could be nice though, because mixing down to stereo analog tape gives it some nice extra warmth, and perhaps even some tape saturation

    Any kind of cool panning effects to demonstrate? Does this machine make a decent stereo image?

    • @MultitrackCassetteFans
      @MultitrackCassetteFans  5 років тому +1

      DJ Clark Most of my videos are mono, because I record the audio through the mic input of my iphone. But you can make a stereo mix by panning each of the 4 channels to your taste. And if you have a stereo return signal of an effects unit, that will also add some space to your mix.
      But IMHO, for a really good stereo image, you would have to have more tracks.
      To be honest, I don’t care that much about stereo. A good mono mix carries all the soul and emotion just as good. I’m a big fan of Phil Spector

    • @MultitrackCassetteFans
      @MultitrackCassetteFans  5 років тому +1

      Esteban Rodríguez Thanks dor watching! What do you mean exactly with mixdown for duplicate? I think you only need 1 mixdown, either to your computer or to a stereo cassette. Or any other stereo recording device

    • @EstebanRodriguez-lr6oo
      @EstebanRodriguez-lr6oo 5 років тому

      I mean, you have a final mixdown on the Tascam, but I Don't know if that mixdown it's recorded on the cassette for put it then on a duplication machine as the "master" .

    • @MultitrackCassetteFans
      @MultitrackCassetteFans  5 років тому +2

      Esteban Rodríguez Ah now I see what you mean...the mixdown is not recorded onto this machine. When you mixdown, the stereo signal on the L+R output of the 244 must be recorded onto a stereo recorder, for example your computer or a “normal” stereo cassette recorder

    • @MultitrackCassetteFans
      @MultitrackCassetteFans  5 років тому +2

    • @MultitrackCassetteFans
      @MultitrackCassetteFans  6 років тому

      Ben Williams That’s because the recorder “expects” a stereo return signal from your effect unit. Perhaps you can use a splitter cable that splits your mono effect output into 2 identical mono plugs, so you can feed both L and R return inputs
