Thank you! After watching other videos for hours, this is the only one that walked me through BASIC recording and mixdown. A fine place to start. Thanks for not getting lost in complexities and zillions of considerations and DAW crap.
Yes, yes, write the instructions in such a simple and understandable language. I have been in some despair for 2 days now, trying to understand the manual from tascam.
Your simple instruction has enabled me to use my Tascam Model 16. I now realize what an amazing multi tracker is this unit. Please can you make a tutorial to explain the further processes in more detail. Your Tutorials make this unit viable. Without it, Tascam's instructions are incomprehensible. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this easy to understand tutorial. I bought a Model 16 but the instructions you get from Tascam are totally inadequate and overly complex. No way could I understand how to use it from what they provide. after watching your video I can suddenly use it and realise what an incredible desk it is. Tascam should pay some serious attention to this -Thank you again - you e saved the day...more please!
You sir are amazing! Thank you so much I watched multiple tutorials and just couldn't get my track to mix down properly and then boom 🤯 so again thank you!
Once you export to the SD card and delete separate tracks it will not let you record ANYTHING with your free tracks to the track exported to SD card. Add more tracks to that recording. I think you want to get menu to mtr. Click on that and go to track edit. Click on that. Go to track swap and click on that. Then pick track you want everything to go to. Then clear separate recorded channel and you might be able to add more tracks to that. Once you export to SD card your all done recording . That is your final mix.
Thanks! I just got a Tascam 12, an upgrade from my old failing zoom R8. This is an extremely difficult learning curve for me. I am wondering if I'll ever be able to use this awesome machine, but your video has more instruction for dummies than the others.
Leave requests for future tutorials here in the comments! The song in this video is just for fun - the focus is basic mechanics and functions of the machine. Hi I have a 12 and I'm looking at the similarities and the differences. I like the top inputs and a few of the added features but still happy with what I have.
Just got a model 12, thanks for this helpful video, how do u connect phone or camera to the tascam to get the clear audio, another thing is there a way you can assign a track without having to plug in and out the mic in each track
Enjoyed the tutorial! I have a M24 that I use as a mixer into my DP32. The M24 opens allot of doors in our recording process. Listen to Blue Leech on Neutral Earth’s album- Current, Volts & Ohms (UA-cam). The songs was primarily recorded by myself and then recorded track by track on to the DP32. Was extremely happy with the results.
Yes, recording more tracks simultaneously is one advantage. If I play a guitar part and record it on the m24, with my hands freed up I can then play that recorded part onto the master dp32. That includes manipulating the sound with m24 efxs; fading the part in and out; as well as panning considerations, etc. If you listen to the Blue Leech song, the panning efxs and the m24 set on the ping pong efx, really enhanced the stereo separation aspects of that song. All that said, there are qualities/features of the dp32 that the m24 cannot touch. For instance, I copy, cut, paste and move parts all over our songs. You can’t do that with the m24. So in tandem the two really work for me.
The song is on Neutral Earth-Current, Volts & Ohms (here on UA-cam). It is the fifth song @ 20:27. I’m the “Joe” 1/2 of Neutral Earth. I used the m24 on the majority of the songs on the album.
Hello I would like to thank you for your video tascam 16, you have helped me enormously with your very very good explanations of this machine which is a marvel ... A big thank you to you again...
Thank you soooo much! But with the final mix down, do you lose your 'raw' recordings ( your vocals on ch 1& 2) ? Are you able to change your levels of reverb (plate) later if you don't like it afterwards? Thank you!
Hello progdog. Thank you for uploading this video. It was very helpful. I need to know if it is possible (model 12, 16, 24) to record live directly to the ableton or logic pro multitrack. without going through the sd card. Also if it can be routed to record with plugins from your computer. greetings thank you!
Best straight forward explanation so far...But, I still don't understand how to get the finished product to my song library on my desk top or laptop computer....Do you just pull the SD card and put it into a card reader on other computers? My laptop doesn't have an SD card reader. Can you put the final mix on a USB stick?? This has been the biggest obstacle for me..
Can you record out of this machine to an old tape recorder to record onto cassette tape? If so that would eliminate the need for an old Tascam portastudio tape machine. Thanks I learned alot from your vid!
ive got a question about the mixing recording process. if you have a ten minute track and you play it back while making changes to effects etc do those effects ONLY apply to when you make the changes or does it apply to the whole track? how to you get a good recording if you have to tweek and adjust all along until you get it right if the effects dont apply to the whole track after you get them dialed in?
Dude your video was awesome. Very exolainitory all good. Thanx so much. Is there a way to use the 7 band eq on the final mix out? Instead of using the 3 band eq? Or what is the 7bander used for? Thanx
I have a 24 but I watched anyway...on the 24, above the green compression knob are the live/MTR switches which I don't think you touched. Do you not use them when going from record to listen on the 16?
Thank you for your video. Is it possible to make different effect sends on each channel. For example, on channel 1, room, on the second hall, on 3 diley, etc. If so, how can I do this?
Normally I would play it through monitor speakers and there are quarter inch outputs for that. The way I did it in the video though was out of the headphone jack and into my recording device which I monitored on my own headphones
A particular difficult area for me now is mastering. Mixing all 8 tracks down to 1 in the bowels of the Model 16, where does it go? I recorded a mono track as an experiment and it disappeared, only to pop up on the second channel of another song...I confess to being confused at this stage, how to use tracks 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 ?
I have some work ahead of me for my album but dont know yet. I usually master on Logic. What you did was bouncing? But it ended up on a diff song. I will do more tutorials this fall for sure though.
Hi again, I have a problem with mixing down and mastering. I followed your excellent instruction to export then import the track. on my machine when I go to the export option screen it only gives the option of either tracks 11-12 or 13-14 no 9-10? I successfully got it on 11-12. I can find no mention of bouncing, mastering or 9-10 11-12 13-14 in the manual. What are they? why are these tracks not called simply 9, 10 and 11. I really could use a video specifically about these tracks and how to use them. My intuition is that it is because these are classed as two tracks each for stereo mix down, or 'bounce', and cannot be used each individually but, again not much in the manual. Many thanks this thread is a life saver and I hope Tascam are paying you well.
Hey man can you explain how if recording a two channel input you can get the appropriate sound to come on the card? I tried this using your method but when you go to bounce the track everything explodes into the individual tracks rather than it just reocording the output as a file. Does keeping the toggle on live instead of mtr help with this?
Hi Dean. If I use an instrument channel, which look like 1+2....can I choose any channel by using these inputs....for instance....guitar into instrument 1....but record in channel 7....thanks
oh wait: Chat GPT says.... Yes, with the Tascam Model 16, you can indeed route input from one channel to another track for recording or monitoring purposes. Here's how you can do it: Select the Input Source: Ensure that the input source you want to route is connected to Input 1 on the Tascam Model 16. Access the Routing Options: On the Tascam Model 16, navigate to the channel settings or routing menu. This can typically be accessed via the touchscreen interface or using physical controls on the mixer. Assign Input to a Different Track: Within the routing menu, locate the option to assign the input source (Input 1 in this case) to a different track. You may need to specify the desired destination track number where you want the input signal to be routed. Monitor or Record: After routing the input to a different track, you can use this setup for monitoring during a recording session or for recording the input onto the newly assigned track. The specifics of how to access and configure these settings can vary slightly based on the Tascam Model 16's interface and firmware version, so consult the user manual for detailed instructions tailored to your specific mixer model. This flexibility in routing allows for versatile recording and monitoring setups to suit different audio production needs.
hello mine doent work the Solo button is the only one that makes it work! i have the model 12 but the faders following your steps dont work I need help please!
Hello... I have a question... after the mix can i save the project with all the settings on the SD card to edit it another time, that is to continue from where I left off without using a computer.
what exactly do you mean by 'settings'? Unfortunately things like the eq, volume levels etc are not stored as the board is all analog (on the 16 which I have)but the 12 may be different as it is a digital board
Is compression affecting the signal when recording the playback like eq, fx, and fader, or is this like the gain structure and cannot be changed after recording?
Sort of unhappy w screen size and ui. However, it forces you to keep things simple. The whole point of dawless. Fyi, love your song choice. 😂. Who doesn't sing this in there car just like that. 😳
weird. I have been away from using the Tascam but am getting set up to use it a lot now. I will make videos as I do it, and learn/ teach at the same time....
Hi Dean, I'm interested in multi track recording (in a DAW). I have a question for you. When you record in multi track (on a DAW), are the EQ and effects recorded for each channel? Or the effects are only recorded when you bounce the Master (like your Video)? Thanks
I use a tiny bit of compression right to the individual tracks when I'm recording, and I assign effects to a bus so there's less cpu , in other words for during mixdown.
I misunderstood your post sorry. I have started digging in and using my tascam 16 this past week finally, and I have plans to make more videos for it soon!
at 11:14 i laughed out loud, how are you going to rerecord or add something without any midi clock, lol. by singing live again haha, or maybe the good old flute and guitar :p
I have to start my songs 15 seconds in, i need that 15 seconds to get to my drums. How do i do a final mix at say 12 seconds in. So my songs start in sooner?
Will be recording new music soon...I've barely broken my model 16 in. I'm guessing you can set a marker and just mix down from the marker? Or drop final file into a daw and trim it there?
Let us know how it goes. I just started a song demo on mine tonight. Amazing how fast I forget some simple operations. It's a lot of muscle memory recording.
Unfortunately, you can't apply more than one effect at a time using the built-in TASCAM effects. If you want separate effects then use external pedals.
None of this works for me... I used to record on tape for years, & did my final mixes on a PC with a mic input jack. But my new laptop doesn't have one, so I'm having trouble.... I can take out the SD card but the tracks aren't EQ'd, panned or leveled how they were on the model 12...so I would have to re-EQ, get the levels right, pan things how I want to, ALL OVER AGAIN....that just makes it pretty pointless & a huge waste of time. So how can I mixdown FROM the model 12 itself onto my laptop???
Ok, here's some ideas: To assist with mixing down from your Tascam Model 12 onto your laptop, follow these steps: 1. Understand the Signal Flow and Connectivity The Tascam Model 12 has multiple connectivity options, including USB, which is likely the best way to interface with your laptop for mixdown purposes. 2. Set Up the Tascam Model 12 for USB Audio Interface Mode Connect the Tascam Model 12 to your Laptop via USB: Use a USB cable to connect the Model 12 to your laptop. Ensure the Model 12 is powered on. Switch the Model 12 to USB Audio Interface Mode: On the Model 12, press the MENU button. Navigate to the SYSTEM settings. Select USB and ensure it is set to AUDIO INTERFACE. 3. Configure Your Laptop's Audio Settings Install Necessary Drivers (if required): Depending on your laptop's operating system, you may need to install drivers for the Model 12. Check Tascam's website for the latest drivers and software. Select the Model 12 as the Audio Input/Output Device: On Windows: Open Settings > System > Sound. Under Input and Output, select the Tascam Model 12 as the device. On Mac: Open System Preferences > Sound. Under Input and Output, select the Tascam Model 12. 4. Use Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Software Open Your DAW: Use software like Audacity (free), GarageBand (Mac), Reaper, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, etc. Configure the DAW to Use the Model 12: In the DAW's audio settings/preferences, set the Tascam Model 12 as the input and output device. Record Your Mixdown: On the Model 12, create your mix with all the EQ, panning, and level adjustments. In your DAW, create a new stereo track and set it to record from the stereo output of the Model 12. Press record in the DAW and play your mix on the Model 12. The DAW will capture the audio as it is played. 5. Export the Recorded Mix Edit and Finalize in the DAW: Once recorded, you can do any final adjustments in the DAW if necessary. Export the Mix: Export the recorded mix as a stereo audio file (e.g., WAV, MP3) from the DAW. By following these steps, you should be able to mix down from the Tascam Model 12 onto your laptop without losing your EQ, panning, and level settings, making your workflow much more efficient
@@deanwolfechannel I've tried thw USB method. Don't get any sound unless I'm in DAW mode. I don't want DAW mode. I've recorded on all the tracks on yhe model 12... Daw only lets you use channels 1 & 2. So I want to mix down everything I've recorded. The ONLY way I've found so far to do that is with an adapter to hook up with the main outs & use a computer or another mix down deck.... But my new computer only has USB inputs & I don't have any signal except in DAW mode
@@JakeStrange66 It sounds like you're facing a bit of a challenge with your setup. Since you've tried the USB method and are only getting sound in DAW mode, let's explore another option. If you want to mix down everything you've recorded on the Tascam Model 12 without using DAW mode, you could try the following: Using the Main Outs: As you mentioned, you can use an adapter to hook up the main outs of the Tascam Model 12 to your computer. Ensure you have the correct adapter (likely a 1/4" TRS to 3.5mm stereo or similar) to connect the main outs to your computer's USB inputs. Adjust the volume levels on the Model 12 and your computer to ensure proper signal flow without distortion. Selecting the Correct Input Source on Your Computer: Once connected, make sure your computer recognizes the input source. Go to your computer's sound settings and ensure that the correct input source (the one connected to the Model 12) is selected and the volume levels are adjusted appropriately. Monitoring the Sound: You may need to monitor the sound through headphones or speakers connected to your computer to hear the mix from the Tascam Model 12. Mixing Down: With the main outs connected to your computer, you should be able to mix down your recordings directly onto your computer without using DAW mode on the Model 12. If you're still encountering issues, double-check your connections and settings to ensure everything is properly configured. Additionally, you might want to consult the Tascam Model 12 user manual or reach out to Tascam customer support for further assistance tailored to your specific setup and needs.
@@deanwolfechannel problem is, the computer I was using to mix down from the main outs has a mic input jack. But that computer recently started having a lot of problems. My new laptop doesn't have a mic input jack. It only has USB inputs & a headphone jack. That's all it has.
@@JakeStrange66 It sounds like you're dealing with quite the dilemma. Losing the mic input jack on your old computer and now having only USB inputs and a headphone jack on your new laptop definitely complicates things. Given your current setup, here are a couple of potential solutions to consider: USB Audio Interface: Since your laptop only has USB inputs, investing in a USB audio interface could be the key to solving your problem. Connect the main outs of your Tascam Model 12 to the inputs of the USB audio interface. Then, connect the USB audio interface to your laptop via USB. With this setup, you should be able to route the audio from your Tascam Model 12 directly into your laptop without needing a mic input jack. USB-C to Audio Adapter: If your laptop has USB-C ports, you might be able to use a USB-C to audio adapter. Connect the main outs of your Tascam Model 12 to the adapter. Then, plug the adapter into one of the USB-C ports on your laptop. This adapter should allow you to input audio directly into your laptop through its USB-C port. Before purchasing any new equipment, make sure to double-check compatibility and read reviews to ensure that the solution you choose will work effectively with your specific laptop and Tascam Model 12 setup. It's frustrating to encounter these kinds of compatibility issues, but with a bit of troubleshooting and the right equipment, you should be able to find a solution that works for you.
luckily you did not use a drum machine or groove box or synth or arpeggio or rhythm that has a tempo. well voice sync and overdub lol, I can do that with a 30-dollar all-in-one toy music microphone.
So as clear, you need a computer to sync al your gear. The computer reads the mtc and sends the midi beat to midi devices. Uuh adding a midi clock like the model12 would have been so much more to this mixer.
If you don't want the rants...how about just the facts? These units have a problematic issue with the power switch. I have gone through THREE units and all have the same problem. So if someone asks if I would recommend this unit...I'd have to say NO.
This is one of the jankiest, least functional pieces of gear I have had the displeasure of touching. Cheap construction, lousy software onboard and outboard, loose and just gross feeling knobs right out of the box. This thing feels like it came out of a Fisher Price box. Pathetic. Returning ASAP.

I bought the zoom l12... big mistake. will sell it and get a tascam.
Thank you for solving my question.
it doesnt have dedicated high z inputs for guitar?
On tracks 1 and 2, yes
Hello dear i just wanted to know if you be able to loop the stuff that you recorded ?
Theres markers you can set. I'm not sure, but logically it may be set up to do that, I'd have to look into it
Is compression affecting the signal when recording the playback like eq, fx, and fader, or is this like the gain structure and cannot be changed after recording?
Great question. I'd have to look at schematics. 90% sure that it records compressed.
i want to record an acoustic drum kit with 8channels.how can i fix phase issues with that? also till what duration i can record non stop.
Sort of unhappy w screen size and ui. However, it forces you to keep things simple. The whole point of dawless. Fyi, love your song choice. 😂. Who doesn't sing this in there car just like that. 😳
😂 thanks!
One video showed something about bouncing channels 11 and 12 to 9 and 10. You never see channels 11 and 12 unless you go into the track swap mode.
weird. I have been away from using the Tascam but am getting set up to use it a lot now. I will make videos as I do it, and learn/ teach at the same time....
@@deanwolfechannel Same here. I have a little studio with the Model 12 in the middle.
Will it loop seamlessly?
Great question. I'll look into it.
Did a USb come with yours?
I got mine used. I think so, it was rather short.
It is compatible for use in model 24
Yes
@@deanwolfechannel thank you
I wonder if you can export/ bounce a final mix the same way in pc mode ?
I usually refer technical question to the tascam model Facebook group. Many there eager to work out solutions.
@@deanwolfechannel wow 😯 thanks 🙏🏾 didn’t know it was a group lol
When I try to start it says, card protected before I can load the song?
there's a 2 position tab on the SD card, maybe it's in safety position?
Can you master on these machines ?
Yes
Hiii Prog Dog, do you have anymore on the tascam model 12 14 16?
Thanks
16 yes
Oh cool, where can I find a link? I like your detailed explanation.
Oh cool, where can I find a link? I like your detailed explanation.
I work in mysterious ways!😄
I have to start my songs 15 seconds in, i need that 15 seconds to get to my drums. How do i do a final mix at say 12 seconds in. So my songs start in sooner?
Will be recording new music soon...I've barely broken my model 16 in. I'm guessing you can set a marker and just mix down from the marker? Or drop final file into a daw and trim it there?
@@deanwolfechannel thnks. Ill try marker set. I use an AI mixdown software, do not have daw. Want to limit computer influence.
Let us know how it goes. I just started a song demo on mine tonight. Amazing how fast I forget some simple operations. It's a lot of muscle memory recording.
@@deanwolfechannel setting the marker does not work, when you mix down to main, it records 0 to the end.
@@donknotts5625 if you're staying away from a DAW that's an issue. If I come up with anything I'll post It here...
Just so you know, it's " dry", not "naked". Thanks for the vid.
How do you solo a track on the 24?
on the 16 you depress "PFL" button on the track. Not sure about the 24
How do you add separate effects to each channel. Please please help. I will cashapp anyone who is willing to explain.
Ok, here's some ideas:
To assist with mixing down from your Tascam Model 12 onto your laptop, follow these steps:
1. Understand the Signal Flow and Connectivity
The Tascam Model 12 has multiple connectivity options, including USB, which is likely the best way to interface with your laptop for mixdown purposes.
2. Set Up the Tascam Model 12 for USB Audio Interface Mode
Connect the Tascam Model 12 to your Laptop via USB:
Use a USB cable to connect the Model 12 to your laptop. Ensure the Model 12 is powered on.
Switch the Model 12 to USB Audio Interface Mode:
On the Model 12, press the MENU button.
Navigate to the SYSTEM settings.
Select USB and ensure it is set to AUDIO INTERFACE.
3. Configure Your Laptop's Audio Settings
Install Necessary Drivers (if required):
Depending on your laptop's operating system, you may need to install drivers for the Model 12. Check Tascam's website for the latest drivers and software.
Select the Model 12 as the Audio Input/Output Device:
On Windows:
Open Settings > System > Sound.
Under Input and Output, select the Tascam Model 12 as the device.
On Mac:
Open System Preferences > Sound.
Under Input and Output, select the Tascam Model 12.
4. Use Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Software
Open Your DAW:
Use software like Audacity (free), GarageBand (Mac), Reaper, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, etc.
Configure the DAW to Use the Model 12:
In the DAW's audio settings/preferences, set the Tascam Model 12 as the input and output device.
Record Your Mixdown:
On the Model 12, create your mix with all the EQ, panning, and level adjustments.
In your DAW, create a new stereo track and set it to record from the stereo output of the Model 12.
Press record in the DAW and play your mix on the Model 12. The DAW will capture the audio as it is played.
5. Export the Recorded Mix
Edit and Finalize in the DAW:
Once recorded, you can do any final adjustments in the DAW if necessary.
Export the Mix:
Export the recorded mix as a stereo audio file (e.g., WAV, MP3) from the DAW.
If you want to mix down everything you've recorded on the Tascam Model 12 without using DAW mode, you could try the following:
Using the Main Outs:
As you mentioned, you can use an adapter to hook up the main outs of the Tascam Model 12 to your computer.
Ensure you have the correct adapter (likely a 1/4" TRS to 3.5mm stereo or similar) to connect the main outs to your computer's USB inputs.
Adjust the volume levels on the Model 12 and your computer to ensure proper signal flow without distortion.
Selecting the Correct Input Source on Your Computer:
Once connected, make sure your computer recognizes the input source.
Go to your computer's sound settings and ensure that the correct input source (the one connected to the Model 12) is selected and the volume levels are adjusted appropriately.
Monitoring the Sound:
You may need to monitor the sound through headphones or speakers connected to your computer to hear the mix from the Tascam Model 12.
Mixing Down:
With the main outs connected to your computer, you should be able to mix down your recordings directly onto your computer without using DAW mode on the Model 12.
Given your current setup, here are a couple of potential solutions to consider:
USB Audio Interface:
Since your laptop only has USB inputs, investing in a USB audio interface could be the key to solving your problem.
Connect the main outs of your Tascam Model 12 to the inputs of the USB audio interface.
Then, connect the USB audio interface to your laptop via USB.
With this setup, you should be able to route the audio from your Tascam Model 12 directly into your laptop without needing a mic input jack.
USB-C to Audio Adapter:
If your laptop has USB-C ports, you might be able to use a USB-C to audio adapter.
And that's only half the story.
Yikes. Thanks for sharing. I will keep an eye on that issue
What’s wrong with the power switch?
They are problematic...just ask Tascam@@mikegallant5018
This is one of the jankiest, least functional pieces of gear I have had the displeasure of touching. Cheap construction, lousy software onboard and outboard, loose and just gross feeling knobs right out of the box. This thing feels like it came out of a Fisher Price box. Pathetic. Returning ASAP.
Awesome a Rush fan too 🙂
