  • This is 2019 and this is my first experience recording on my recently aquired Portastudio! I made it as a sort of guide for those of you interested in analog recording. I hope you enjoy it!!
    I'm currently working in the next video of this series were I mix this track also in a completely analog way and get it ready to upload here on UA-cam as the new backing track of the channel, so please subscribe and activate the bell icon to be notified when it's relased.
    Thanks!!!

    Sweet. I just acquired one of these. I have newer technology to deal with, but this "old school" stuff is still relevant. Nice licks.

    Please do one with real drums. Every 4 track video i come across is mainly drum machines. it would be cool to see someone try and get the best possible drum sound on one of these old Tascam units.

      I would really love to try some real drums on this machine but sadly I don't have the space for a real drumkit. I think that's the same issue with all the other videos you saw

    This is superb my friend and very well done. I use a Tascam 488mk1 that i restored and I always will use it, purely because it produces great sounding recordings. Thanks for sharing this great video. Kind regards. Paul

    Nothing I've ever recorded on mine ever sounded like it did during playback as it did when recording it. I bought mine new & it's always been like that. Actually some things will with EQ adjustments. But I've managed to record some decent sounding albums with it. However lately nothing sounds right when bouncing tracks....cant get drums to sound right no matter what even though they sound fine during recording. I can't figure it out.

    how do you keep the "sterio" track drum going to channel 1 mono on 424?

    cool! very soothing and warm sound and great bass!!! now let me ask you, is that with dbx enabled on recording (and playback)? cuz its so damn quiet without any noisefloor!!

    • @InspiringTracks
      @InspiringTracks  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks!! Yes, it was recorded with dbx on and on high tape speed. I also was amazed by how quiet the recording was and the overall audio quality.

    great video dude! just got my Porta 05 back from repairs today and can't wait to try something like this out! Just been using it as an "insert" tape effect but I think the most fun will be from recording with it!

    That’s what I like about tape recording you have to play your part all the way through.

    • @InspiringTracks
      @InspiringTracks  5 років тому

      That's absolutely right and is one of the main advantages (or disadvantages) of tape!

      @@InspiringTracks Doesn't the 424 have "punch in/punch out" capability so you don't actually have to have a 1 take performance? Great video by the way!

    Was wondering why you just didn't play the keyboard and plug it directly into the 4 track recorder instead of using computer software, then a drum machine directly into the recorder? I tried software before for keys and drums, but I found the sound being better using a drum machine and a actual keyboard (one of many I have). Just a personal preference I guess, hey? Nice video as well! Forgot to ask about the above when I commented on the software a few months ago.

    • @InspiringTracks
      @InspiringTracks  5 років тому +2

      I totally agree! I would love to record real keyboards and drum machines but I don't have any at hand. I'm a guitar and bass player and only occasionally play some keys so a midi controller and some soft synths are the only things I need ATM. Maybe someday I'll buy some real synths but I always end up buying another guitar or pedal haha. Thanks for your comment and I'm glad you liked the video!

    How much does the Basic Studio One software cost? I saw on their website that there is a free download, but that's limited right? Would I have all the functions with the frre download do you know? Also, do I really need software? I have a 424 mk 2 and a behringer mixer and using keyboards and singing, no guitars. I also have the Beatbuddy pedal for my drums.

    • @InspiringTracks
      @InspiringTracks  5 років тому

      The free version of studio one is pretty functional, I think is limited in the number of tracks and plugins but if you never used a DAW I strongly reccomend you to try that version. You'll learn al the workflow of the program without spending one cent and later on when you feel confident you can wait for some promotion and go with the pro version. Im currently using and old version (3.3) purchased some time ago for something like 200 bucks with a huge discount. And yes, some multitrack recording software will change your life! I love my tascam for his analog sound and vibe and is a great addition my recording tools but there's no way it can be compared to any modern DAW in speed, ease and features

    You didn't pan track 1 left while recording track 2 to right.
    Doesn't that stop track bleeding?
    You can record the first 3 tracks and pan them all right and trigger track 4 and put them on 4 and then reuse 1,2 and 3.
    This was how the Beatles did it.
    check out the 424 recording channel

    • @InspiringTracks

      Yes, it's called track bouncing or ping pong. There are several ways to do it, even using an external recorder or your DAW and I was planning to made a dedicated video about it but life happens and I have to put more time into other projects. Maybe when this quarantine thing passes and I can get some new tapes I'll do it. Cheers!

    Inspired me to spend the $50 for a power supply and belts to refit my old 424. Nothing punches like analog. Even Lo-Fi like this, home stuff, still sounds punchier than digital. Thanks for this!

    • @InspiringTracks

      I recorded with dbx on and high speed, also a nice chrome cassette is mandatory. When recording to tape always record at the highest posible level, just before saturation, that way you achieve the highest signal to noise ratio. And if you are recording with a mic try an external preamp, the internal ones are a little noise and don't sound all that nice. Hope that help! Enjoy your Tascam and have fun recording with it!!

    • @TheTopcat1441

    If you're using the computer, plugins, and digital audio interfaces, you're defeating the purpose.
