In the early 90’s I was a US submariner and a bunch of us where Ironman watches with the indigo backlight. They were perfect for checking the time when the control room was rigged red for periscope depth. In fact, so many of us wore them that one of my shipmate’s told his wife about it, and since she worked in PR she pitched it to timex. A few months later they ran full page ads of a bunch of guys standing on a submarine in the dark with their wrists glowing blue. I remember the copy being super cringy (something about “lights out drills”) but it was still pretty cool.

Before the Ironman there was the Timex Atlantis, a steel bodied digital that had the same-ish screen display. I bought several of them, finding it easier to buy a new watch than getting the battery changed. I even gave a few away as gifts. Had one glued to the instrument cluster of a Honda Motorcycle for a few years too!

I recently bought the Ironman for $50 Canadian; I've had a GW-5000u for quite some time. The Timex's buttons are way easier to use. I don't love the skinny fonts, but the Timex dial is surprisingly gorgeous to look at. The screen background is cleaner, the numbers are WAY bigger. For just seeing the time while you're in the gym (what I use the Timex for), Timex wins hands down. I don't love the Timex band as much as you; it's a very hard plastic that's not very comfy. I do like the keeper though. There's something attractive about the Timex that you can't see in a UA-cam video... it has a very interesting depth to the dial, while the Casio's is one-dimensional and shallow. The Casio looks a lot like it's 80's ancestor; the Timex has evolved into something completely different. When I bought the Ironman, I just wanted something for the gym that I could sweat all over, allow to get bumped, and not care about too much, because it didn't cost me anything. But I've been surprised by how much I like it... they did a really great job of creating a very nice looking and super usable beater watch. I'd recommend it without hesitation. In Canada, the Casio 5600 is also more than twice the cost of the Ironman, which would be a big factor in making a recommendation.
Packaging is a strange category. You throw it away 2 minutes after you buy the watch. Who cares if it's in a chest or a paper bag?
Great video about real world watches as always!! 🧡🔥⌚ And best voice on UA-cam!

Two things not covered in the video:
    1. The Timex allows you to display the date in an international format for us non-Americans
    2. The G-Shock has that infamous receded adjust button that is a pain to operate. This one particularly bothers me as I use the timer quite often.

    1) The timex appears more accurate than the casio.
    2) Also in the GMT mode for timex you not only select a different time , you can change the date or year too. So it technically can be an excellent time travellers watch .

I had the Square Casio Model 5600 and the Timex Ironman 30 laps. I sold the Casio and kept the Timex. Why? 1) Buttons of Timex are better, in the Casio you need a pin to push the reset button, in example when you should put the Chrono in 0. 2) Timex has three alarms, and you could program daily, only working days or only weekends; Casio has only one alarm. 3) Timex has three time zones; Casio, only one. 4) Timex has a bigger display, better light and the light keep working if you are pushing any button, in order to help you perform your duty. 5) The band of Timex is more confortable and better quality. No doubt.

Good job Jody, but i think you missed a huge part of the backlight. The Ironman gets a 10 for backlight due to night mode! Hold down the light button for 3 seconds and a little crescent moon shows up. While in night mode a push of any button turns on the Indiglo for 3 seconds. The G Shock light is ok, but try to change your alarm or timer settings in the dark. It's a pain with the G Shock, but super easy with the Timex night mode. I don’t know how so many reviews that mention Indiglo skip over night mode. Sometimes I have to work in the dark. Night mode is the reason I keep buying Ironman watches even though i have 3 solar G Shocks with Multiband 6. I always wear an Ironman to work. I'm wearing the retro colored one from your video right now. I have a blacked out one arriving from Amazon tomorrow.

To be honest, though I suspected (correctly) which watch was going to cross the finish line first, I was really routing for the Timex. I think I, personally, would have rated the Timex higher in the "Brand " category by a point at least. Growing up in the 70's, Timex was THE affordable watch. My first watch as a boy was, in fact, a navy blue dialed Timex hand winder, similar in appearance to every other watch I had, up until that point, ever seen. The TV commercials were ubiquitous, the tag line still resonates in the zeitgeist 40 years later, and, as a bonus, the brand seems to be having a bit of a mini Renaissance lately while G-Shock is releasing grotesquely expensive special editions of watches they had in their catalog for decades.
Having said that, though, the 5600 is just a better looking accessory than the Ironman, in my opinion, at least.

If they had a solar variant I'd get one yesterday, maybe they'll get there soon as they've been rolling out more and more solar powered models, one can only hope.
And back on that indiglo backlight, the fact you can get it to trigger when you press the buttons is just such a great feature in my mind, I seriously wonder why the rest of the industry hasn't tried to copy that functionality.

I think the Casio is undeniably a better watch and don't have much of a problem with that, although I really think the branding category needs some clarity. Maybe it's a regional thing and I'm out of line, but the number of Timex watches in this world is outrageous. Even when I was a kid (I'm 46 now) every single old guy wore a Timex and it's not much different now. Now these old non-watch guys have sock drawers or night stands full of old Timex watches from every period of their life. Every TV show back in the black and white TV days were sponsored by Timex. Even in the 80s, me and my friends mostly had a Timex model. (although there were a few casios around that we might have honestly liked more) So I guess it depends on how you're looking at it. If it's digital vs digital, I get it. But if it's a brand-wide, real-world popularity contest and we're looking at the whole history, it's truly not even close.
That all being said, yeah. The Casio is totally better.

Yes very regional. I’d like a Timex, I really would, I’m of the age that the Ironman was really desirable in my late teens to early 20s. But they were and still are so expensive. Result even now, when I get the itch, I go and check an Ironman’s price and for the money there always are 3 or 4 better priced Gs, even of the more modern and feature rich variety. Growing up lots of us had Casios, Timex were few and far between. And the older folk here didn’t have Timex either. My sensation is the opposite of yours, Casio is ubiquitous and worldwide, Timex is heavy in some markets, rare as hen’s teeth in others.

Great comparison! I remember when these came out way back in the day. I wanted the G since all the cool kids (and by cool kids I mean us geeks in the computer club and D&D playing types) were getting them. My family was on a fairly strict budget but my mom managed to save up and get me the Ironman since the G-Shock was more expensive. Wore the crap out of that thing as only a young teenager could.
Fast forward to today and I have both and much prefer the G-Shock. Just love how classic it is, how it fits, how it looks and all the nostalgia of bygone days it brings back. Rarely do I ever wear the Ironman. As much as I prefer the display on the Timex and how the beep sounds when pressing the buttons, the number one reason is that keeper setup. I find it finicky and always have to wrestle with it too much to take the watch off.
Either way you can't go wrong. Both are great watches and will serve for many, many years.
Funny story - my last girlfriend HATED my square G's but after we broke up and she tried to get us back together, she suddenly loved them!

They updated that GShock model to have an LED, among other upgrades. I think it's worth seeking out over the older model featured here if someone wanted to get one. Then again, there's also a model exactly like that but with solar charging that's even better too!

I own watches from both brands and love them all, a modified square G is my daily work watch and i have many Expedition Timex's as well. The Ironman is iconic but i think the Timex Command 47 is a closer comparison, in fact i think it only exists because the G-5600 does, lol. But it's a nice piece for a marginally cheaper price than the G with a better display, it's worth a look.

In the UK, the watches are both the same price on Amazon. I'm actually surprised that the GShock is back under £50 - is been double that for a while.
I love the display on the Casio but, being someone of the larger waistline, I wouldn't feel comfortable with a watch suggesting I do triathlons. If they branded it "Allotments and Washing Machines", I'd go for it.

I loved it, but the only reason why I stopped wearing it was the band went on it and I couldn't get a replacement. I tried looking an adapter, no dice. I did have it on my desk as a mini clock until the battery died.

I use the Ironman as my eyes are a little older and I can read the display of the Ironman on a run. I’m not sure the button below the face is actually two separate buttons - I just press in the middle to start and record splits as I run. I also like that the two times zones can be set to 12 or 24 hours independently. You can also choose if the larger display is used for elapsed time or split time in the Chrono. Great running watch IMHO. How about the Ironman being worn by a US president. The G-shock square, however, is a better-looking watch.

  • @Ekstraordynaryjny
    @Ekstraordynaryjny День тому +1

The square isn't really in the same category as the Iron-man. It's more of a field or tool watch than a sports watch. You want to put the iron-man against something like a G-056 or maybe G-7700 for a more fair comparison.

If you can manage to push the adjust button on the g while the stopwatch is running it will show split and basically act as a second lap timer. Not really practical since the button isn't hard to push and a two lap timer isn't as good as a basically infinite lap timer.

I never understood the concept of making "tough" watches so ridiculously big (looking at you mudmaster...). I understand they need to be bigger to make them rugged. But if I pick a rugged watch to wear during rough activities, I want it to be as small as physically possible so it has the least chance of interfering with said activity.
For that reason, I'm still sticking with the square G-shocks.
I wish Casio would/could put their negative MIP dispaly and module out of the GBD-200 in a 5000/5600 body with added multi-band 6 and tough solar.
Basically a DW-H5600 without all the health stuff that makes it too bulky and with MB6 instead of Bluetooth. Thinner and cheaper.
