The point you made about the NRX 4wt being “enough” to toss a streamer in a pinch is dead on. Even my dedicated dry fly, first generation 3wt will throw buggers and muddlers with basically no complaint if I was too lazy to pack the 6wt
Dear Peter, I got myself a G.Loomis NRX+ #5 9ft and experienced the same emotions. I used it with Triangle Taper Signature, Signature Plus, SA Trout, Rio Technical Trout Rio Gold lines which it all handled very well. I was surprised about the sheer amount of backbone the rod has while being able to deliver very delicate presentations at short ranges. So I mounted an Airflo Streamer Max with 160 grain. The rod pulled the sink tip out of the water following a simple twist of my wrist. The only rods which come close to this action are the Hardy NSR SR. What line did you use in the video?
Every NRX+ rod I've tried so far has been awesome. Loomis really nailed it with this model lineup. In the video I was using a store brand line (Farlows) that I bought while vacationing in England in 2012. By the feel of the line, it's probably made by Shakespeare. It has a generic WF-4-F taper - very ordinary - and perfect for demo purposes.
Nice :) What type of leader were you using (length of the tapered part, length of tippet)? The leader plays a major part in the whole scheme of things.
Depends on the type of fishing we're doing. In trout dry fly fishing a short cast would be just the leader while 40' would be a long cast. In striped bass fishing, I doubt I've deliberately cast as short as 40'. We normally cast as far as we can, which is usually between 80' and a 100'.
Just ordered the 8'3" 3 wt. Any suggestions what line to use? should I go with 3 weight lines or do I need to go up a class like in my other 20 year old rods :)
Yes, it breaks the leader and fly free of the water without that loud popping sound that we get sometimes. That noise can put fish down. The fly and leader come away from the water very quietly and without a lot of spray if we "S" it out of the water with a side-to-side lift.
I'm still blaming and regretting the day I've sold my GLX Streamdance 9ft 4wt , nothing that came out on the market matched again the remarkable performances I was enjoying with this rod , only when Hardy start producing Sintrix models I felt in my hands something similar, Scott G2 and Centric 9ft 4wt sold immediately after a few fishing days , overrated and performing like rods that cost less than half their prices. I think that Steve Rajeff competence and experience on the field on how a fly rod must perform is unattainable without his same background. I'm eager to buy soon this model.
The simplest answer is both. It really does come down to personal preference as we can make a case for either one. I used to like softer tipped rods for nymphing, but these days I'm more likely to use a stiffer tipped rod. So today if I was going to buy a 9' 5 wt for nymphing it would be the regular taper NRX+.
@@hooked4lifeca I’m debating the 5 Weight for Terrestrials (Size 8 would be the biggest) for spring creeks/smaller rivers. Would this be a good rod choice for 20-45’ distances? I like Scientific Anglers MPX taper which is 1/2 size line heavy. Could I just underline this rod with a MPX Taper and be alright?
At around 6 minutes the casting was beautiful… I’m sold man, gonna buy a nrx+ to me

The 383 LP + is a very special rod as well. All the LP do very well with the new Rio Technical Trout lines
I’ve never seen someone so confident they wont catch a fish.
Isn’t that the LP??? The reel seat on my 590-4 NRX plus looks different I only know that wood color on the LP version?
Yes it is, I'll correct the title.
Ah okay :) Great Videos and greetings from Bavaria Germany 😊

It was a standard 9' 5X leader with a foot or so of 6X Fluorocarbon at the end.
Have you tried the Scott G in the #4 ?
I don't recall if I have tried one as a lot of client rods have gone through my hands, so I don't remember most of them.
Can you explain length distances between short and long range. What distance is considered short and what is long range?

I'd just go with a standard three weight. I'm using a standard 4 wt. on my 4 wt. NRX+ with no difficulty.
Is your line pickup as special technic? Its not only lifting the flyline, you are moving the line sideways?
Yes, it breaks the leader and fly free of the water without that loud popping sound that we get sometimes. That noise can put fish down. The fly and leader come away from the water very quietly and without a lot of spray if we "S" it out of the water with a side-to-side lift.
@@hooked4lifeca thanks a lot! This will help my to improve my abilities!

Can you get ahold of a Scott G series 8’8” 4wt and do a comparison. I can’t make a decision on which one to get.
Unfortunately I cannot. Have you checked the Yellowstone 4 wt. shootouts?
@@hooked4lifeca I have but the Rod they have in the shootout is a 9” and they scored it low
Sorry, I don't have any other ideas for you. All I can say is that I highly doubt the NRX+ would disappoint.
Would you suggest the LP or Regular NRX for light indicator nymphing with New Zealand Wool?

What reel/size do you have paired with this rod?
I'm using a Hardy Featherweight on it. Any lightweight 4/5 sized reel should do the job.
Is this the LP version you are using?
Yes it is. The standard NRX+ 4 wt. is a 9' rod.
@@hooked4lifeca thank you sir
Of course it's the price of a damn car
I'm realizing that fly fishing is an artisanal sport like golf. It's a rich man's game I guess. I give up.
So are a pair of sneakers these days. ;)
Speaking of cars ... just buy used fly gear and you don't pay for depreciation. Exactly like car buying.
Is this the standard version of the NRX+ or the LP version?
It's the LP version.
@@hooked4lifeca I went on a wild goose chase searching the net for a NRX+ 486-4…could only find the LP version
