    My mum loves that seal strip.
    What worked way better though was replacing the fucked hidges on all the upvc frames so the original seals could actually do there job. (likely not an issue on your windows and doors but for anyone with plastic hardware. Toolstation do universal kits that fit most units)

    Most heat loss will always be through the glass, such as windows and doors. We just stopped using shutters that actually work and mostly use a cosmetic shutters now. Interior shutters that have an insulated layer in the middle can make the biggest difference. As far as R value, the best walls will have an R value of R-11, R-13 or R-19. Burt the very best low E glass, nitrogen filled, double pane windows are just at R-4.5.
    Wood shutters on the inside of the house can add to the appeal, save heat and make a home have an older feel to it that some people like.
    FLIR cameras (infrared) can cost $5,000 each but maybe you can rent one or even purchase one to start a small business of showing others where there houses are losing the most heat.
    And for the last tip- Always check out your roof after a light snowfall. You will want to see a light even white coating that melts evenly. You can even take a look on your way to work and see where other homes are missing insulation or where it has fallen down because those areas of the roof will melt first from the heat loss in your home.

    Love the video Pete great helpful hints. One thing to add if people dont no is the echo4 scheme that the government are running ive just had airsorce and solar installed they also look at loft and wall insulation in it allot people can get it free charge. From the floor point view from son of a floor layer of 40 years silly thing but the underlay u have isnt helping could do with looking at newer style. The door foam round doors i treid about year ago but i spent more time sticking it back on. Maybe got bad batch or sommit certianly few things ill be doing. We have stove aswell but as of probably next week it'll be running day and night. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      Ooooh, I didn’t know that about the underlay. We’re planning wood floors soon(ish) so will take a look at some better stuff then.
      Worth looking at the Gov schemes available - there seems to be lot of money, and not a lot of good help explaining how to access it!

    The spray foam should be sealed with mortar. Or even better: stuff in some mortar and no spray foam.
    The spray foam will (the normal, cheaper ones) will accumulate humidity and won't be substantial.

    I know it's still early days but have you had any issues with condensation due to less air flow?

    • @northernworks
      @northernworks  10 місяців тому

      The only place I’m getting condensation is on the kitchen door panes, where it’s only single glazed. Nothing too bad though, and there’s still plenty of air flow though the house with air bricks and open internal doors. Something to watch out for though, for sure
